When motorcycle racing fans think of
races, they think of the World Grand Prix,
The World Motocross Championships, or
World Endurance Championships; however, there is another popular race called
the Tourist Trophy (T.T.) Race. This is a
true road race, held on the Isle of Man
every year since 1907. The Isle is located
between the United Kingdom and Ireland
and the course runs 60km over the island.
Up and down mountains, through villages
and towns all on the common road system of the Island. The racer actually tours
the Island during competition, hence the
races name "Tourist Trophy Race". Many
famous competitors and machines got
their start with the T.T. race over the
years, but none of the fans will forget the
1978 T.T. race. That is the year that the
great Mike "Mike the Bike" Hailwood
came out of retirement to race one more
time. Mike Hailwood had already won 9
World Championships and 76 Grand
Prix's prior to retiring from motorcycle
competition. He went on to race Automobiles and F-1 racers, but broke his ankle
in 74. so was out of competition again.
His miraculous come-back to motorcycle
racing and the winning of the 1978 Tourist
Trophy will stand out as a fantastic
achievement for years to come. Mike rode
a Ducati bike during this race and to commemorate the event this famous Italian
motorcycle firm released a super sport
"Mike Hailwood Replica" in 1980. Based
upon the popular 900SS Ducati, but with
full cowl and painted in the red and green
of the Italian team, and with the single
riders seat. Engine is a 90 degree V twin

REPLICA
of 863.9cc which produces 63hp and can
propell this bike to a maximum speed of
222km/h. This engine is said to be symbolic of Ducati, and in particular its valve
system. On the normal 4 cycle engine,
valve opening is done with a cam and
closing by return spring. At high RPM's
this system can contribute to "valve
float". Ducati's system, called "Desmodromic", was designed by their engineer
F. Taglioni in 1954, and uses cams to both
open and close the valves, which allows
for a much higher RPM. The engine is
mounted in the diamond frame in an "L"
format which is characteristic of Ducati.
This compact engine arrangement accounts for the nimble handling and
makes the bike competitive with the
larger bore Japanese bikes. Standard
suspension of double front forks and rear
swing arm, plus triple disc brakes rounds
out this bike, making it a superlative performer.
Wenn Motorradfans etwas von Motorradrennen horen, denken sie an den World Grand
Prix, die Welt. Motocross Meisterschaft oder
an die Marken- bezw. an die Langstrecken
Meisterschaft. Es gibt aber noch das Tourist
Trophy Rennen welches seit 1907 auf der Isle
of Man gefahren wird, ein echtes Strassenrennen. Die Isle of Man liegt zwischen
England und Irland, die Rennstrecke geht 60
km fiber die ganze Insel, rauf und runter,
durch Orte und Sta'dte. Die Fahrer kommen
wahrend des Rennen tatsachlich wie
Touristen uber die ganze Insel, daher der
Name : Tourist Trophy Race. Seit Jahren

gehen viele bekannte Fahrer auf ihren
Maschinen an den Start, aber niemand wird
das Rennen von 1978 vergessen. Dies war das
Jahr, in welchem der grosse Mike "Mike the
Bike" Hailwood nochmals an den Start ging.
Mike Hailwood hatte bereits 9 Welt-Meisterschaften und 76 Grand Prix Rennen vor
Ruckzug aus dem Rennsport gewonnen. Er
wechselte zum Automobil und zum Formel 1
Rennen, brach sich 1974 den Knochel und
konnte nicht mehr an den Start gehen. Sein
Come-back zum Motorradrennen und der
Gewinn der 1978 T.T. zeigt sein Konnen auf
Jahre hinaus. Mike fuhr in diesem Rennen
eine Ducati zum Sieg und die italienische Firma brachte zum Dank die Super Sport "Mike
Hailwood Replica" 1980 auf den Markt. Diese
basiert auf der bekannten 900SS Ducati,
jedoch mil voller Verkleidung, einsitzig und
in den Farben rot/griin des Italien Teams. Der
Motor ist ein 90 Crad V Twin mit 863,9cc die
63 PS bringen und das Motorrad auf max. 222
km/h. Die Maschine ist symbolisch fur
Ducati, hauptsachlich das Ventilsystem.
Beim normalen 4 Taktmotor erfolgt die
Ventiloffnung durch eine Nockenwelle, das
Schliessen geht mit einer Ruckholieder. Bei
hoher Drehzahl kann dieses System zu
"Valve Float" fuhren. Das System von Ducati
wurde 1954 von Ingenieur F. Taglioni entwickelt und die Ventil-Offnung und das
Schliessen erfolgt uber Nockenwellen und
erlaubt eine hbhere Drehzahl. Der Motor ist
"L" formig im Rahmen montiert - auch
typisch fur Ducati. Die Standard Auf hangung
in doppelter Frontgabel und hinten im Schwingarm sowie die Scheibenbremsen machen
aus diesem Motorrad eine Hochleistungsmaschine.

the fuel tank, seat cowl and fenders.
Cowl is red with green trim, and this
green trim is also duplicated on the tank.
Wheels are gold. Some Ducati's are
seen with semi-gloss black front and

during construction and should be done
at that time. Refer to drawings at right
for decal placement.

Decal Applications.
(1) Remove all dust, dirt and adhesive smears
with a wet cloth before applying any decals.
(2) The decal to be applied should be removed
beforehand from the decal sheet. Cut off
translucent film along colored parts.
(3) Dip the decal in tepid water for about 10
seconds and then remove it onto a clean
cloth. Be careful of over immersion to avoid
loss of decal's adhesive.
(4) Hold the backing sheet edge and slide the
decal onto the model.
(5) Wet the decal with a little water on your
finger so that it can be moved more easily into position.
(6) Press the decal down gently with a clean soft
cloth to remove air bubbles and until all excess water has been fully absorbed. When a
decal has to be applied to a surface which is
uneven or curved, press the decal down with
a hot towel so that the decal will fit the contours perfectly. Cut off the excess transparent portion around each decal. The decal
must then not be touched until dry.

Tuch entfernen
(2) Decals erst ausschneiden entlang den Linien
(3) Decals in Wasser legen, dann nach 10
Sekunden auf z.B. Handtuch legen und etwas
abtrocknen lassen.
(4) Decal an der Unterlage halten und Bild auf das
Modell schieben
(5) Mit etwas Wasser auf dem Finger la'sst sich das
Decal noch etwas verschieben.
(6) Decal mit etwas Stoff gut andriicken, urn die
Luftblasen zu entfernen und das Wasser abzutrocknen. An unebenen Stellen kann man mit
heissen Tuch das Decal besser andriicken
Transparente Uberreste am Decal abschneiden
Decal nicht mehr beriihren, bis getrocknet ist
