The digital edition of historical texts is a major task for libraries today. In the
not so distant future we will see the shift happen from single pilot editions
towards the digitalization of entire libraries. Thousands of even older treatises
will be available online for reading and searching. But the editing of historical
sources poses an interesting problem: the huge amount of special characters
to be coded and rendered properly. To achieve that, a very special typeface is
neccessary.
The typeface Andron offers a css-embedded webfont solution which is
equipped to meet those particular requirements like no other font. Wellknown system fonts or freefonts with large amounts of characters usually lack
a typographic quality suitable for long texts. On the other hand, high-quality
text faces always lack an extended character set needed for special editorial
purposes.
Andron offers both: a unique character coverage and excellent typographic
quality. As such, Andron is one of a kind to this day.

Andron contains comprehensive sets of special characters in best
typographic quality.
Die digitale Edition historischer Werke ist zu einer wichtigen BibliotheksAufgabe geworden. In naher Zukunft werden es nicht mehr nur einzelne
Pilot­projekte sein, die für den weltweiten Onlinezugang erschlossen werden,
sondern ganze Bibliotheken. Die Bearbeitung historischer Quellen stellt dabei
eine besondere Herausforderung dar: eine erhebliche Anzahl Sonderzeichen
ist elektronisch zu kodieren und am Bildschirm lesbar darzustellen – und dies
stellt ungewöhnliche Anforderungen an die verwendeten Schriftfonts.
Mit der Satzschrift Andron steht Ihnen langfristig eine Webfont-Lösung per
css-Einbindung zur Verfügung, die für diese speziellen Anforderungen gerü­
stet ist wie keine andere Schrift sonst. Umfangreich ausgebaute Systemschriften und weit ausgebaute Freifonts bieten in der Regel keine hinreichende
typographische Qualität. Typographisch hochwertige Satzschriften bekannter
Hersteller verfügen andererseits nicht über ein auch für spezielle Zwecke
ausreichend ausgebautes Zeichenrepertoire.
Die Andron verbindet beides: ein einzigartiges Zeichenrepertoire und exzellente typographische Qualität. In dieser Kombination ist die Andron bis heute
unerreicht.

Das Satzschriftpaket Andron Mega umfaßt heute über 14.000 Zeichen. Dies
ist das Ergebnis eines ca. 12jährigen Entwicklungsprozesses, intensiver typographischer Forschung und wissenschaftlicher Partnerschaften. Die besondere
Stärke der Andron liegt bei den Sprach- und Geisteswissenschaften. Sie ist ein
zuverlässiges Werkzeug auch für hochspezialisierte Texte und Transkriptionen. Die Andron hat sich in vielen anspruchsvollen wissenschaftlichen Editionen bestens bewährt, sie wird laufend um neue Zeichengruppen ergänzt.
Die Andron umfaßt neben kompletten Zeichensätzen für Lateinisch,
­Griechisch, Kyrillisch und Koptisch auch die für Westgotisch, Altitalisch,
Altnordisch, Altenglisch, Runen, Ogham und verschiedene phonetische Notationen, sowie Hunderte weiterer Sonderzeichen für Spezialgebiete wie z. B.
Astrologie, Paläographie oder Währungszeichen.
Weitere Zeichenkomplexe (z. B. Hebräisch, Armenisch) sind für die Ergänzung vorgemerkt.

Today the font set Andron Mega contains about 14.000 characters. It is a
result of twelve years of development, intense typographic research and scholarly collaboration. The particular strengh of Andron lies in its capabilities for
linguistics and the humanities. Andron is a tool to rely on for highly demanding text work and transcriptions. It is tried and tested in many ambitious
scientific editions and gets regularily extended.
The Andron type family covers not only most complete character sets for
Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Coptic but also Gothic, Old Italic, Old Norse, Old
English, Runes and Ogham as well as various phonetic notations. Moreover
it offers Hundreds of special characters for e.g. Astrology, Palaeography or
monetary signs.
Further writing systems (e.g. Hebrew, Armenic) are earmarked for extension.

given that the user has got the
font running on his hard disk.
A future webfont solution will
enable everyone to view the text
like this, independent of personal
font dispositions.

Die Andron wird nicht nur ihres unerschöpflichen Zeichenvorrates wegen
gerühmt, sondern auch wegen ihrer typographischen Qualität hoch geschätzt.
Sie ist keine Neuauflage einer historischen Schrift sondern ein neuer Entwurf
nach dem Modell der venezianischen Renaissance-Antiqua.
Die direkte Gegenüberstellung mit einer Reproduktion zeigt, daß die Andron
auch unter den heutigen technischen Bedingungen Garant für lesefreundliche
Textdarstellung ist, die den Vergleich mit den besten historischen Schriften
nicht zu scheuen braucht.

Andron is praised not only for its inexhaustible character repertoire but also
in terms of its typographic quality. It is not a remake of some historic typeface
but a new design, based on the model of the Venetian Roman.
The direct juxtaposition with a reproduction reveals: Andron warrants a
reader-friendly text rendition even under modern technical conditions, it
copes well with the best of historical typefaces.

truely nothing left to be desired.
