Trauminseln Seychellen
Strände, Fauna und Flora, aber auch
politische Stabilität: der kleine Inselstaat im
Indischen Ozean hat Einiges zu bieten.
ehr als 1.350.000 km2 tiefblauer Indischer Ozean, 119 Inseln mit seltener
Fauna und Flora, knapp 90.000 Einwohner aller Hautfarben – das sind die Seychellen, gleichzeitig Land der Superlative und des
Postkartenformats. Mehr als 150.000 Touristen
jährlich, die meisten aus Frankreich, Deutschland,
Italien und Russland, besuchen die Traumstrände
und Luxushotels. Kein billiges Vergnügen, denn
die Seychellen setzen auf das Hochpreissegment,
um Massentourismus zu vermeiden, die Umwelt
zu schützen und die einzigartige Naturkulisse
des Inselarchipels nicht durch Hotelklötze zu verschandeln. "Not higher than a palm tree" ist die
Devise für den Bau von Hotelanlagen.
Die Seychellois sind ein multiethnischer Völkermix mit kreolischer Muttersprache, aber alle
sprechen auch Englisch und Französisch. Für die
meisten von ihnen ist das Leben weniger luxuriös

natural scenery of the archipelago not to be disfigured by huge

ich nicht nur für Kenia
und Somalia, sondern auch für die Seychellen zuständig bin, verfolgen mich meist
neidische Blicke. Dienstreisen zu Inseln unter Palmen möchte schließlich jeder gern
machen. In der Tat freue ich mich auch
immer sehr auf meine jährliche Seychellenreise, denn die Seychellois haben eine
Erfolgsgeschichte zu erzählen. Vom völligen
finanziellen Zusammenbruch des Staates
in 2008 haben sie sich in wenigen Jahren
wieder zu einem aufstrebenden Land gemausert, für das sich internationale Investoren wie Umweltschützer auf der Suche
nach guten Beispielen gleichermaßen interessieren. Und der Strand? Auch auf den
Seychellen finden offizielle Gespräche in
klimatisierten Büros statt!

When I tell people that I am responsible
not only for Kenya and Somalia, but also
for the Seychelles, I often get envious looks.
Who would not like a business trip to islands with palm trees? In fact, I am always
looking forward to my annual trip to the
Seychelles because the Seychellois have a
true success story to tell. From complete
financial collapse of the country in 2008,
they managed to morph back into an
emerging country within just a few years,
making it an attractive place for investors,
environmentalists and all those looking for
best practises. This makes meetings with
government officials, business people and
environmental organisations very enjoyable. So what about the beaches? Even in
the Seychelles official talks are held in airconditioned offices!

für die Bevölkerung: die Abschaffung von
Sozialleistungen. Schul- und Arztbesuche
sind nun kostenpflichtig und für staatliche Wohnungen muss Miete gezahlt
werden. Zwar gibt es auf den Seychellen
so gut wie keine Arbeitslosigkeit, denn
Tourismus und Fischerei bieten genügend
Arbeitsplätze, aber Lebenshaltungskosten
und Energiepreise sind hoch. Von tropischen Früchten, Gemüse und Fisch mal
abgesehen, müssen alle Lebensmittel
und Haushaltswaren importiert werden.
Auch die Piraterie am Horn von Afrika,
die sich in den letzten Jahren immer weiter

traf die Seychellen schwer. Der Jachttourismus kam völlig zum Erliegen; die Einnahmen aus dem Thunfischfang sanken um
30%. Inzwischen scheint das Schlimmste
überwunden. Der Einsatz von Militär und
privaten Sicherheitskräften, die abschreckende Wirkung der ATALANTA-Mission der
EU im Indischen Ozean und der EU-finanzierte Aufbau eines regionalen Anti-Piraterie-Zentrums auf der Hauptinsel Mahé,
haben die Piraterievorfälle in 2012 zurückgehen lassen. Selbst das „Traumschiff”,
die MS Deutschland, legte Ende Dezember
2012 wieder auf den Seychellen an.
Apropos Deutschland: Etwa 100 Deutsche
leben auf den Seychellen, einer von ihnen
hat ein Optikergeschäft, ein anderer stellt
Marmelade und Säfte her. Um ihre Belange
wie auch um gestrandete Touristen und
Häftlinge kümmert sich die deutsche Honorarkonsulin Kerstin Henri.

[from p.1] The Seychellois are a multi-
ethnic people with Creole as mother tongue
but all speak English and French too. For most
of them, life is not as luxurious as their visitors’. Since 2008, the Seychelles have gone
through a severe financial crisis which was
overcome by harsh structural adjustment
programmes. Painful consequence for the
population: the abolition of social benefits.
Education and medical care are now being
charged for and rent must be paid for public
housing. While there is virtually no unemployment in the Seychelles because tourism
and fishing provide enough jobs, the cost

of living and energy prices are high. Apart
from tropical fruits, vegetables and fish, all
food and household goods are imported.
Also, piracy in the Horn of Africa, which in
recent years continued to spread all over the
Indian Ocean did not spare the Seychelles.
Yacht tourism came to a halt and proceeds
from tuna fishing fell by 30%. However, the
worst seems over now. The use of private
security forces and military intervention, the
deterrent effect of the European Union ATALANTA mission in the Indian Ocean and the
EU-funded development of a regional antipiracy centre on the main island of Mahé
have significantly reduced piracy incidents
in 2012. Even the German "Love Boat", the
MS Germany, called at port in the Seychelles
in December 2012.
Speaking of Germany: About 100 Germans live in the Seychelles, one of them
runs an optician's shop, another produces
jams and juices. Taking care of their needs
as well as tending to stranded tourists and
prisoners is the German Honorary Consul
Kerstin Henri.

Nach drei Tagen und Nächten in tropischer
Hitze, ohne Klimanlage und mit blockierten
Toiletten kamen die 1000 Passagiere des
havarierten Kreuzfahrtschiffs Costa Alegra
wohlbehalten im Hafen von Mahé an.
Die 38 deutschen Touristen wurden von
Konsularbeamten des deutschen Generalkonsulats Dubai, der deutschen Honorarkonsulin Kerstin Henri und der deutschen
Botschafterin am späten Nachmittag des
1. März 2012 in Empfang genommen.
Costa Alegra rescue
After three days and nights in tropical heat
without air conditioning and with blocked
toilets, 1000 passengers of the wrecked
cruise liner Costa Alegra arrived safely at the
port of Mahé in the late afternoon of 1 March
2012. The 38 German tourists who were on
board were received by the consular officers
of the German Consulate General Dubai, the
German Honorary Consul Kerstin Henri and
the German Ambassador.

Touristen und darum, dass die Beziehungen zur Regierung der Seychellen gut
laufen. Manchmal sind auch Investoren
aus Deutschland oder das Militär in seinen
Antipiraterie-Missionen zu betreuen.

Welche Tips würden Sie Touristen geben?
Die Touristen sollten nicht nur eine Insel,
sondern so viele Inseln wie möglich besuchen – möglichst sowohl Koralleninseln,
als auch granitische Inseln. Da bekommt
man die schönsten Einblicke in die Natur.
Die unbewohnten Inseln haben auch ein
ganz besonderes Flair. Allerdings sollte
man nie ohne einen Führer, der sich gut
auskennt, losziehen.

Was schmeckt besser: deutsches oder
Seychellois Essen?
Beides! Manchmal sehne ich mich nach
Eisbein mit Sauerkraut, dann wieder nach
gegrilltem Fisch mit Mangosalat.
What do you do as Honorary Consul?
I take care of the issues of German expatriates and tourists. I also maintain good
relations with the Seychellois government.
I provide organisational support to German
investors or the German navy when they are
here on their anti-piracy missions.
What advice would you give tourists?
Tourists should visit as many islands as
possible, both coral and granitic islands.
The uninhabited islands are also a unique
experience. The beaches and the sea are
very beautiful there. But you should never
stroll around or go for a hike on the islands
without a local guide.
What is best: German or Seychellois food?
Both! Sometimes I long for a good knuckle
of pork with sauerkraut, then I look forward
to eating grilled fish with mango salad.

>> Piraterie Bei der Bekämpfung der Piraterie werden die Seychellen von der EU und
den Vereinten Nationen unterstützt. Einer
Vielzahl von Piraterieverdächtigen wird auf
den Seychellen der Prozess gemacht. Im
vergangenen Jahr überstellten die Seychellen verurteilte Piraten auch nach Somaliland.
>> Piracy In the fight against piracy at the
Horn of Africa and in the Indian Ocean, the
Seychelles receive support from the European Union and the United Nations. A number
of suspected pirates are being tried in the
Seychelles. Last year, the Seychelles also
transferred convicted pirates to Somaliland.
>> Kleinstprojekte Über ihren Kleinstprojektefonds unterstützt die Botschaft
Projekte und Maßnahmen, die unmittelbar die Lebensbedingungen armer und
benachteiligter Bevölkerungsgruppen verbessern. Im vergangenen Jahr 2012 wurden neun Projekte mit einem Gesamtvolumen von ca. 127.000 EUR vom Auswärtigen
Amt finanziert.
>> Micro-Projects Through its Micro-Projects Fund, the German Embassy Nairobi
supports projects aimed at ameliorating
the livelihood of the poor and disadvantaged groups of the Kenyan people. In
2012, the Embassy financed nine projects
through German Federal Foreign Office
public funds with a total volume of approximately 127,000 EUR.
>> UNEP Eine hochrangige Delegation von
Umweltexperten wird anlässlich des diesjährigen „historischen” Governing Councils von
UNEP Mitte Februar 2013 nach Nairobi reisen.
Neben Entscheidungen in unterschiedlichen
Umweltbereichen wird es dieses Jahr insbesondere um die Stärkung und Aufwertung
des Umweltprogramms gehen. Erstmalig
wird die Konferenz aus diesem Grund mit allen Staaten der Weltgemeinschaft, vertreten
durch die Umweltminister, stattfinden.
>> UNEP A high-ranking delegation of environmental experts will participate in this
year's "historic" Governing Council of UNEP
to be held in Nairobi in mid-February. In addition to decisions in different environmental areas, the Governing Council will focus
on the strengthening and enhancing of the
environment programme. For the first time
ever, all nations of the world will participate
and will be represented by their respective
Minister for Environment.
>> Wirtschaft Ostafrikanische Unternehmen sind auch für Deutschland interessant. Das zeigte sich am 15. Januar 2013 im
Hotel Intercontinental während des Seminars zu deutschen Handels- und Gewerbemessen. Unter dem Motto „International
Exhibitions made in Germany“ warben
die Organisatoren für den Messestandort
Deutschland und weckten reges Interesse bei den kenianischen Teilnehmern.
>> Business East African companies are
of great interest for Germany. This was
demonstrated on 15 January 2013 at the
Intercontinental Hotel during a seminar on
German trade and commercial fairs. The
organisers promoted Germany as the ideal
location for trade fairs under the theme "International Exhibitions made in Germany".
This created great interest among the Kenyan participants.

Wähleraufklärung
Die deutsche Botschafterin Margit HellwigBötte hat am Mittwoch ,den 16. Januar
2013 offiziell Infomaterial zur Aufklärung
der Wahlen übergeben. Die IEBC hat
damit nun 85.000 Poster und ebensoviele Broschüren, die von der deutschen
Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZ) gefördert
wurden, erhalten. Dieses Material soll den
kenianischen Wählern helfen, die bevorstehenden Wahlen besser zu verstehen.
Darüber hinaus leistet die deutsche EZ
auch technische Beratung, um freie, faire
und friedliche Wahlen zu gewährleisten.

Voter education
The German Ambassador to Kenya, Mrs.
Margit Hellwig-Boette, officially handed over
voter education material to the IEBC on
Wednesday 16 January 2013. The voter education material is sponsored by the German
Development Cooperation and comprises
85,000 posters and 85,000 handbooks. The
material will help Kenyan voters to better understand the voting process in the upcoming
elections. In addition, technical advice is also
provided to strengthen the efforts towards
free, fair and peaceful general elections.

Margit Hellwig-Bötte besucht den Deutschunterricht an der Brookhouse
School Nairobi und bringt den Schülern bei, bis dreißig zu zählen und ihren
Geburtstag zu sagen.

Nairobi's German class and teaches the pupils to count until 30 and to say
their date of birth.

>> Bergsteigen Kenia und Tansania bieten
mit Mt. Kenia und Mt. Kilimandscharo
wunderschöne und bis zu 6000m hohe
Berge, deren Gipfel auch für Nicht-Bergsteiger
durchaus erreichbar sind. Die vergleichsweise
günstigen Verhältnisse verführen dazu, zu
schnell und unvorbereitet aufzusteigen
und somit z.T. schwere Erkrankungen zu
provozieren. So erreichen bei nur fünftägigem
Aufstiegszeit 40% der Bergsteiger den
Kibo-Gipfel nicht. Nur nach ausführlicher
Beratung, ggf. körperlicher Untersuchung
und mit Vorsorgemaßnahmen sollte man
sich auf den Weg zum Gipfel machen. Die
Regionalarztstelle berät hierzu gerne.
>> Freiwillige & Praktikanten Alle
deutschen Freiwillige und Praktikanten
benötigen für Tätigkeiten in Kenia eine
Arbeitsgenehmigung, welche nach
Einreise beantragt werden muss. Dies gilt
auch für unentgeltliche Tätigkeiten. Infos:

>> Mountaineering Kenya and Tanzania
offer beautiful, up to 6000m high
mountains. The summits are accessible
even for non-professional climbers. The
comparably easy conditions however often
make climbers ascend too fast and with
little preparation. This can cause serious
illnesses. For example, 40% of all climbers
fail to reach the Kibo summit. The Regional
Medical Office is happy to give advice.
