Die Heimat des Wapitihirsches (Cervus canadensis) sind hauptsächlich
die Rocky Mountains im Westen Nordamerikas sowie Teile Ostasiens. Wapitis sind deutlich größer als europäische Rothirsche.
Die Bezeichnung Wapiti (weißes Hinterteil) stammt von den Shawnee-­
Indianern. In der Mythologie der Indianer nahm der Wapiti eine
­herausragende Stellung ein, was sich z. B. im Namen bedeutender
Medizinmänner widerspiegelt wie Black Elk (Schwarzer Wapiti) bei
den Lakota-Indianern. Der Wapitihirsch ist danach bekannt dafür, dass
er versteht, was er braucht, um zu überleben. (Quelle: Wikipedia)
