What are the causes and effects of illegal downloads?
M1
Read what the editor of a British teen music magazine thinks about downloads.
Hi, everybody, today we have to talk about a
serious problem that concerns all of us who love
music: illegal downloads.

search for news about them and for their music in the
Internet – you really are a great fan.
Still you simply can’t see why you should pay for
your star’s music. You think it’s only a minor
offence1 to make use of illegal file sharing or
downloads. Well, it’s quite easy to do, isn’t it?
After all it is only the profit of multinational
companies which don’t really need your money.
No, it’s not that simple!
in this field. And this means that your favourite
star gets only 50% of the money he or she deserves. That’s not exactly what a real fan wants.

Furthermore10, the record labels are less interested in investing in new artists. The times when
new singers and bands had the chance to develop
without the need of making money quickly have
gone. It might sound unbelievable, but bands
like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or (more
recently) Eminem or Lauryn Hill would not have
had their great career without the financial
support of their labels.

As you can see, legal downloads of singles have
increased7 steadily since 2006, but so have illegal
downloads. And the illegal ones have increased
even more. In 2012 the music business expects
more illegal than legal downloads.
It’s quite a simple calculation: The companies
and the artists8 lose about 50% of their turnover9

How to choose the correct diagram
Different diagrams are used to show different things. Let’s find out more!
Have you read a magazine article recently? Did you have a look at the
three diagrams used? If so, you have surely recognized that they have
quite different structures. Let’s review1 them.
The first diagram shows the sales figures of the Cool Water Gang. This
type of diagram is called a pie chart2. Pie charts are mainly used to show
shares3. The whole pie represents a total of 100%, and the single slices4
show the percentages of certain groups.

The second example is a line chart5. Line charts are used to depict a
process or changes over a certain period of time. For example, you
can use them to show how often a certain product has been sold in
the last years. You see the ups and downs of its sales. But you could
also show the changes of temperature during a year.

The third example is a typical bar chart6.

trate proportions7. In the article they
clearly show the difference between investments and turnover at a
glance8. Bar charts are often used to compare two or more things with
each other, for example different products made by a company, or the
output of different machines.
