Du bist eine trainierte Tänzerin. Auch Tänzerinnen in Ausbildung sind willkommen
Das Zürcher Theater Spektakel wird dir einen Festivalpass, Catering und Essensbons für die
Aufführungsdaten und zwei Freikarten zur Verfügung stellen.

The Last Attitude
Mamela Nyamza and Nelisiwe Xaba are excited, after years of not dancing together, to meet up again
on stage, to do a ballet.
Nyamza and Xaba meet in 1997 in the studios of PACT Dance Company, when Nyamza had just
graduated from Pretoria technikon and Xaba was back from London after spending a year at the Ballet
Rambert.
“The origins of classical ballet can be traced back to the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and
16th centuries; since then many shifts have occurred with various techniques being the focus at
certain periods,” says Nyamza “and tackling this classical genre of dance, born out of elitism, is not an
easy feat! “
The piece will interrogate the politics of this ancient art form, in particular the male posture and the
relationship between the male principal dancer and the ballerina. Traditionally the male dancer served
as a porter, lifting the ballerina to show how light she is and also showing his masculinity. At some
point in history males where not allowed on stage as it was seen feminine for men to dance, this
brings us to the stereotypes men are force to deal with to date e.g. homosexual, feminine, dainty,
weak, fragile, vain, soft, narcissistic, snobs.
Nyamza and Xaba are both fascinated by the sense of abundance and exaggeration of the art form –
the corps de ballet, the costumes, the orchestra and the scenography.
The Last Attitude sets out to demystify the traditions that are so closely linked with this art form:
Eurocentric, female and elitist or high art. To date this art form is still used in politics as diplomacy
between countries in cultural and economic exchanges, continuing keep its place in culture.
