Walter Danner Snow Leopard Projects GmbH www.snow-leopard-projects.com 1 Table of Contents • About us Snow Leopard Projects GmbH Our Philosophy • SLP Digestion Technology • Problems of and Solutions for the Agricultural Industry in Kenya • An Example – The Biogas Plant in Naivasha www.snow-leopard-projects.com Snow Leopard Projects GmbH We buildt the 1st grid connected biogas plant in Kenya and Africa! www.snow-leopard-projects.com Snow Leopard Projects GmbH (SLP) • • • • • • • • Founded (2011) from Rottaler Modell (since 1994) Managing Directors – Katharina Danner and Walter Danner Biogas Entrepreneur since 1994 Spokesman of the Lower Bavarian Regional Group of the Biogas Association (WD) Speaker of the AK Biogas at the German Solar Energy Society (WD) Development, planning and construction of more than 40 biogas plants in 11 countries in Germany, Europe, Africa, Asia and South America Consultant for the UN for biogas and „Biomass to Energy“ (WD) Biogas Management School www.snow-leopard-projects.com Snow Leopard Projects GmbH We are developing economically sustainable biogas technologies that make ecological sense and we are building high-performance AD plants, which process mostly fibrous biomass • For the utilization of agricultural by-products and landscape conservation materials • For the development and improvement of structures in rural regions • National and international • With flexible biogas and power production complementary to wind and solar power as contribution to a turnaround in energy policy www.snow-leopard-projects.com Overview of our Projects UK Italy Germany Croatia India Maldives Ivory Coast Rwanda Peru Chile www.snow-leopard-projects.com Kenya Tanzania Zanzibar Thailand Malaysia Problems in Kenyas Agro Industry High energy prices Unreliable electricity supply Voltage fluctuation in the grid World market prices for the products No utilization of the by products (straw, waste) Waste problems – sisal, slaughter houses, A biogas plant is a 1st principle solution www.snow-leopard-projects.com Agricultural By Products Maize stalks Pack house waste Sisal waste Fruit processing waste Sisal waste Coffee husk Rice straw A biogas plant is a 1st principle solution www.snow-leopard-projects.com Benefits Stable electrical supply Lower costs due to savings on diesel for backup generators Stable frequency – less damage of the electrical equipment – fewer costs Nutrient recovery – fewer costs Less pollution Heat (tea plantations, greenhouses) A biogas plant is a 1st principle solution © Dipl.Ing.(agr.) Walter Danner Technical Problems to Solve Snow Leopard Projects specializes in challenging raw materials such as the digestion of straw and fibrous biomass as well as food production waste materials, which have a high energy content, which is causing easily acidification in digesters. We solve the biological problems with a 2 stage digestion technology with a separation of hydrolysis/acidification and methanisation. www.snow-leopard-projects.com The Right Feed for low fiber www.snow-leopard-projects.com high fiber Advantages of the 2-stage Biogas Technology with Batch-Hydrolysis • Higher biogas yield per ton input • Being able to digest cheaper and more available fibrous raw materials • Utilization of high-energy raw materials like slaughterhouse waste without impairing biology • Seasonally available raw materials can be used as well (fruit waste) • Independence of world prices of expensive raw materials • Higher flexibility of both raw materials and feeding To solve waste, energy, fertilizer and environmental problems in Naivasha www.snow-leopard-projects.com Gorge Farm Biogas Plant at Lake Naivasha Benefits Production of captive power for the vegetable and the flower farm Biogas electricity is cheaper then grid electricity and diesel electricity Stable voltage Utilization of the heat in green houses and breeding beneficial insects Fertilizer for higher yields Nutrient recovery Soils improvement www.snow-leopard-projects.com Feedstock • Maize stalks from baby corn • Vegetable waste from food processing • Agricultural by products as, broccoli stems, bean straw from French beans • Flower waste • By products from various other sources as other farms • In total up to 120 tons per day www.snow-leopard-projects.com The Biogas Plant at Gorge Farm, Naivasha Technology 2 Stage AD – Separation of Hydrolysis/ Acidification from Methanisation in different tanks Tanks 2 Hydrolysis tanks (700 m³) 1 Digester (5.600 m³) 1 Final storage tank (700 m³) Retention time Ca. 16 – 40 days depending feedstock amount Fertilizer Used on the farm Gensets 2x 1,4 MWel nominal Due to the altitude the expected load is 1,2 MWel Investment 6.5 Mio. $ biogas plant + 0.6 Mio $ for farm equipment Profitability Higher than calculated due to higher electricity prices and heat sales www.snow-leopard-projects.com Snow Leopard Projects GmbH Payback 3.5 years Challenges in Engineering and Construction • Seismic active zone – no steel tanks possible, which would have been easier to construct • Transport of equipment • Customs – long procedure • Work goes slower than in Germany – increases construction overheads Challenges in Operation • Weak inoculum – cattle dung has no bacteria • Lack of minerals in cattle dung and feedstock • Fresh maize is different to maize silage www.snow-leopard-projects.com Impressions Gensets www.snow-leopard-projects.com Impressions Gensets www.snow-leopard-projects.com Experiences in Africa HPTC – High Performance Temperature Controlled www.snow-leopard-projects.com • Solar thermal heating system for the operating temperature • High-energy raw materials • Further regional advancement through a reliable power supply Conclusions A biogas plant for captive power is feasible in Kenya and the most other countries in Africa If you can use the CHP heat, it is even more feasible A biogas plant for electricity production and sales of the electricity for 10 ct$ is not feasible www.snow-leopard-projects.com Thank you for your attention!
