Liebe Humboldtianerinnen und Humboldtianer, verehrte Teilnehmer und Gäste,
die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung ermöglicht jedes Jahr über 2.000 Forscherinnen und
Forschern aus aller Welt einen wissenschaftlichen Aufenthalt in Deutschland. Sie pflegt ein
Netzwerk von weltweit mehr als 26.000 Alumni – den Humboldtianern – aller Fachgebiete, unter
ihnen 50 Nobelpreisträger. Viele Angebote der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung sind speziell
auf die Stärkung der wissenschaftlichen Kapazitäten in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern
zugeschnitten. Für Postdoktoranden und auch für erfahrene Wissenschaftlerinnen und
Wissenschaftler aus Afrika ist der Zeitpunkt für eine Bewerbung um eines der hochdotierten
Forschungsstipendien der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung gegenwärtig besonders günstig: Die
Stiftung hat mehrere Initiativen zum Ausbau ihres Exzellenznetzwerkes in Afrika gestartet und
ihr stehen derzeit zusätzliche Mittel zur Erweiterung des Georg Forster-Forschungsstipendienprogramms (HERMES) zur Verfügung. Das Humboldt-Kolloquium in Nairobi verfolgt
daher nicht nur das Ziel einer regionalen und fachlichen Netzwerkpflege, sondern auch der
Gewinnung neuer Bewerberinnen und Bewerber für unsere Förderprogramme.
Neben dem Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) sind zwei weitere Organisationen
im Rahmen von neuen Kooperationsabkommen Partner der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung bei
diesem Kolloquium: die kenianische „National Commission for Science, Technology and
Innovation (NACOSTI)" und die TWAS – „The World Academy of Sciences". Dies ist ganz im
Sinne unseres Mottos „Exzellenz verbindet": Die Macht wissenschaftlicher Exzellenz – Ausbau
akademischer Kapazitäten in Afrika ist ein Zukunftsthema, das viele Verbündete braucht.
Zahlreiche Staaten Afrikas begannen ihren Weg in die Unabhängigkeit – vor rund 50 Jahren – mit
einer kleinen Gruppe einheimischer Intellektueller. Die University of Nairobi wurde im Jahr 1970
erste nationale Universität in Kenia und zählte damals weniger als 3.000 Studierende. Heute sind
geschätzte 300.000 junge Menschen an kenianischen Universitäten eingeschrieben, fast fünfmal
so viele wie noch vor 10 Jahren. Die Zahl der staatlichen Universitäten wurde innerhalb der
letzten beiden Jahre von 7 auf 22 erhöht. Eine ähnliche Entwicklung ist in vielen anderen Staaten
Afrikas zu beobachten. Kritische Stimmen bezeichnen die Expansion der Hochschulen als
„Massification" und warnen vor einem Qualitätsverlust. Es ist notwendig, dass aufstrebende
Länder massiv in den Ausbau einer gebildeten Mittelschicht investieren. Wichtig ist aber auch,
dass es hinreichend viele Professorinnen und Professoren gibt, die ihre hohen
Lehrverpflichtungen mit eigener Forschungserfahrung verbinden können, die sich an
internationalen Qualitätsstandards orientiert.

Dear Humboldtians, participants and guests,
Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables over 2,000 researchers from all
over the world to spend time researching in Germany. It maintains a network of more than
26,000 alumni – the Humboldtians – from all disciplines across the globe, including 50 Nobel
Laureates. Many of the opportunities offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are
specifically tailored to strengthening scientific capacity in developing and transition countries.
For postdoctoral and experienced researchers from Africa this is a particularly good time to
apply for one of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s well-endowed research fellowships:
Several initiatives have been launched to extend the Foundation’s network of excellence in
Africa and additional funding has been granted to expand the Georg Forster Research Fellowship
Programme (HERMES). Thus the Humboldt Colloquium in Nairobi not only aims to foster regional
and specialist networking but also to recruit new applicants for our funding programmes.
As well as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), two additional organisations will
partner the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at this colloquium: Kenya’s National
Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) and TWAS, The World Academy
of Sciences, have signed memoranda of understanding with us. This is very much in the spirit of
our motto ‘Exzellenz verbindet’ (connected by excellence): The Power of Excellence in Science –
Enhancing Academic Capacities in Africa is a theme of great relevance to the future that needs
to involve many different players.
Some 50 years ago, quite a number of the states in Africa set out on their path to independence
with a small group of indigenous intellectuals. In 1970, the University of Nairobi became Kenya’s
first national university. At the time, it had fewer than 3,000 students; today, approximately
300,000 young people are enrolled at universities in Kenya – almost five times as many as ten
years ago. In the last two years alone, the number of state universities has increased from seven
to 22, and a similar trend can be observed in other African states as well. Critical voices describe
the expansion of universities as ‘massification’ and warn that standards will drop. Emerging
economies must make massive investments in the development of an educated middle class. But
it is also important to ensure that there are sufficient numbers of professors who are able to
combine their high teaching load with their own, internationally-compatible research
experience.

Humboldtianerinnen und Humboldtianer aus Afrika haben vor diesem Hintergrund das „AfricanGerman Network of Excellence in Science" (AGNES) ins Leben gerufen. Sie machen sich damit zu
Anwälten dessen, was den Markenkern der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung ausmacht –
wissenschaftliche Exzellenz. Die Mitglieder von AGNES sind als Geförderte der Alexander von
Humboldt-Stiftung selbst zu Förderern geworden: Bereits 25 Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen
und Nachwuchswissenschaftler aus Afrika haben einen „AGNES Grant for Junior Researchers"
erhalten. Einige dieser Auszeichnungen, an denen auch die TWAS beteiligt ist, werden während
des Kolloquiums verliehen. Neben der finanziellen Unterstützung erhalten die Grantees auch
eine intensive ideelle Förderung durch erfahrene Mitglieder des Humboldt-Netzwerkes:
Mentoring ist eines der Ziele von AGNES, mit dem wissenschaftliche Nachwuchskräfte an
internationale Exzellenznetzwerke herangeführt werden.
Wir wollen das Thema „Die Macht wissenschaftlicher Exzellenz – Ausbau akademischer
Kapazitäten in Afrika" auf dem Kolloquium also nicht nur erörtern, sondern auch in konkrete
Handlungsoptionen umsetzen. Neben den AGNES Grantees haben wir eine große Zahl von
Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftlern eingeladen, die von den
Kooperationspartnern DAAD, NACOSTI und TWAS sowie dem Katholischen Akademischen
Ausländer-Dienst (KAAD) nominiert wurden. Sie werden Gelegenheit haben, sich mit erfahrenen
Persönlichkeiten aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Forschungsförderung auszutauschen. Während
der drei Tage in Nairobi soll erfahrbar werden, welche Wirkungen wissenschaftliche Exzellenz
und die internationale wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit entfalten.
Mein Dank gilt allen Personen und Einrichtungen, die die Vorbereitung dieses Kolloquiums so
tatkräftig unterstützt haben, insbesondere auch den aktiven Mitgliedern von AGNES und der
Association of Humboldt Fellows in Kenia, die uns stets mit Rat und Tat zur Seite standen. Ich
wünsche uns allen viele neue Impulse, gute Gespräche und eine über diese Tagung weit
hinausgehende wissenschaftliche und persönliche Vernetzung in der Region und mit
Deutschland.

Against this backdrop, Humboldtians from Africa have established AGNES, the African-German
Network of Excellence in Science. They have thus become advocates for the Alexander von
Humboldt Foundation’s brand essence – academic excellence. The members of AGNES have
made the transition from recipients to givers: 25 junior researchers from Africa have already
received an AGNES Grant for Junior Researchers. Some of these awards, in which TWAS is also
involved, will be presented during the colloquium. As well as funding, the grant recipients are
also given intensive non-financial support by experienced members of the Humboldt Network:
mentoring that seeks to introduce junior researchers into international networks of excellence is
one of the objectives of AGNES.
Thus at this colloquium, it is our aim not only to discuss The Power of Excellence in Science –
Enhancing Academic Capacities in Africa but to turn it into concrete options for action. In
addition to the AGNES grant recipients we have also invited a large group of junior researchers
who have been nominated by our collaborative partners DAAD, NACOSTI and TWAS as well as
the Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD). They will have the opportunity to speak to
experienced individuals working in academia, politics and research funding. During the three
days in Nairobi, it should be possible to make the effects that can be triggered by academic
excellence and international academic cooperation tangible.
I am most grateful to all the people and institutions involved in the preparation of this
colloquium. For such dedicated support I should particularly like to thank the active members of
AGNES and the Association of Humboldt Fellows in Kenya who have always been there to help
and advise us. I hope everyone will have good discussions and leave here with a lot of new ideas
as well as an academic and personal network in the region and with Germany reaching well
beyond the scope of this meeting.

Knowledge Camps mit Kurzvorträgen der Teilnehmenden/
Knowledge Camps with short lectures by participants
In den Knowledge Camps sollen die aktuellen Forschungsarbeiten von Humboldt-Alumni und
Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftlern in vier definierten interdisziplinären Bereichen
in den Mittelpunkt gestellt werden. Darüber hinaus bieten die Workshops ein Forum, um über aktuelle
Forschungstrends, die wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Ländern Afrikas und Deutschland sowie
Möglichkeiten der Forschungsfinanzierung zu diskutieren. Alle Teilnehmenden – Humboldt-Alumni,
Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler und Gäste – sind eingeladen, bei diesen Camps
mitzuwirken.
The aim of the Knowledge Camps is to spotlight current research by Humboldt alumni and early career
researchers in four loosely defined interdisciplinary areas. The camps also provide a platform for discussing trends
in current research, research collaboration between countries in Africa and Germany and research funding. All
participants – Humboldt alumni, early career researchers and guests – are invited to attend these camps.

Nachwuchswissenschaftlern bietet die Poster-Session Gelegenheit zum Netzwerken und für individuelle
Gespräche zwischen allen Teilnehmenden. Zusätzlich sind Vertreter von Forschungsförderorganisationen
anwesend, die Informationen und Ratschläge zu Förderprogrammen sowohl für die individuelle Förderung als
auch für Wissenschaftskooperationen auf allen Stufen der wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn geben können.
The session will feature poster presentations by Humboldt alumni and early career researchers and will provide
an opportunity for networking and individual conversations. Representatives of funding organisations will be
available to provide information and advice on funding schemes for individual sponsorship and research
collaborations at all career levels.
