Institutional Factsheet for KIT – Version 2013/14 – October 2013 6/6 The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – new dimensions in teaching, research and innovation At the former Universität Karlsruhe, a number of famous personalities worked or studied: Heinrich Hertz, proved the existence of electromagnetic waves – laying the basis for modern communication technology; Carl Benz later build the first automobile, Fritz Haber developed the Ammonia synthesis. Today, KIT is one of Germany’s nine elite universities after its success in the Excellence Initiative. This was largely based on the unique idea to merge the Universität and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe into the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). There, both partners join their forces and establish an institution of excellent research and teaching in the natural sciences and engineering, its main focus. The KIT focuses primarily on natural sciences and engineering. Some 18,500 students currently receive practice- and future-oriented education in eleven faculties and more than 120 institutes. KIT thus is internationally one of the strongest research universities. The core research areas are Energy, Nano and Micro Scale Sciences, Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics as well as Climate and Environment. Other focuses are Networked Adaptive Systems, Applied and New Materials, Mobility as well as Optics and Photonics. With near to 20 percent international students, contacts to academic institutions primarily in Europe, the Americas and the Far East, joint degree programmes with French universities, the Gdansk Institute of Technology and the Technical University in Sofia and a German-language engineering program at TWU Budapest, KIT is placed among the leading institutes in Germany. arlsruhe 22 23 www.uni-karlsruhe.de Living in Karlsruhe The Audimax (main lecture hall) at the KIT KIT is setting new standards in teaching and in the promotion of young scientists and is attracting the best minds from all over the world. The International Department (ID) at the university is the first of its kind in Germany: There are three English-language ”Schools” that are closely linked to the industry and operate internationally: • The CARL BENZ School of Engineering with an English-language bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an English-language master’s degree in electrical engineering for especially qualified international students (www.carlbenzschool.de) • The HECTOR School of Engineering & Management with five part-time master’s programmes for executives as an advanced vocational training for engineers, economists and computer scientists (www.hectorschool.com). • The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) with a special master’s programme in Optics & Photonics and a well directed support for PhD students within this field (www.ksop.de). International Flair The International Office is the central institution for International Affairs and offers counselling and advising services for international students, for instance through the internet portal WIRE, a source of information on studies in Germany and Karlsruhe (www.wire.uni-karlsruhe.de). The ERASMUS student group holds weekly social meetings and supports newcomers in the orientation phase, e. g. by providing tutors. Centrally located and yet in green surroundings: the Campus of approximately 60 hectares is situated in a central location between main street Kaiserstrasse and immediately adjacent to the Hardt Forest. The proximity to France and the mild climate of the Upper Rhine Valley create an almost mediterranean atmosphere in the capital of the former Baden state. Founded in 1715, the city lies in the south west of Germany, in the State of BadenWürttemberg. Students have to reckon with around € 700 per month for living expenses. Halls of residence are available at reasonable prices, with average rent costs of € 300 per month. Those interested in a place in a hall of residence are recommended to apply early with Student Services (“Studentenwerk”, the body responsible for allocating places in halls of residence also acting as an agency for privat rooms). Study at KIT – study at an elite university. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Short description: KIT is a prestigious and highly ranked technical university in southern Germany (“Germany’s sunniest region” according to its website) which was founded by a merger of University of Karlsruhe and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in 2009. About 23 000 students are currently enrolled at KIT. The region BadenWürttemberg has a rich tradition of education; apart from KIT it is also the home of universities such as Heidelberg, Freiburg and Tübingen. Language: Mostly German, but also some courses in English. A relatively large proportion of the courses within the ICT field of study are in English. Semester dates: The winter semester goes from October until March. The summer semester goes from April to September. Accommodation : There is a lack of accommodation in Karlsruhe and the university cannot guarantee housing for everyone, but there are several different options for students. Financial aspects : The price level in Karlsruhe is similar to that of Stockholm, or a little less expensive. As an exchange student at KIT you will get the Erasmus scholarship of about 2000 kr per month. See the KTH website for more information. Suitable programs : For students wishing to write their Master Thesis, KIT has a website with suitable projects, but you can also propose your own topic. Even if some of the projects on the website are described in German, you can always write it in English if you prefer that. If you prefer to take courses, you simply have to click your way through the course list and see if you can find any suitable courses that match your program. You are probably most likely to find courses from the bilingual Master Programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, but you might want to have a look at some of the other programmes as well. Miscellaneous: KIT has a long and impressive tradition of research and they are very proud of this. Previous students/lecturers at KIT include Karl Benz (Mercedes Benz), Heinrich Hertz (the frequency) and Emil Škoda (the car). All over the very nice campus there are things reminding us of the KIT research during the last (almost) 200 years. The name “Karlsruhe” means “Charles’ rest”. The palace was built as the centre of the city with 32 streets spreading like sunrays from the palace tower. This layout, which is still clearly visible, gave Karlsruhe its nick-name “Fächerstadt” (the fan-shaped city). Adjacent to the palace – and to the University – spread the ample palace parks which the citizens like very much for recreation. Karlsruhe is situated in the southwest corner of Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It has a population of more than 270,000 and borders the outskirts of the Black Forest on one side and the Rhine, the largest river in Germany, on the other. Neighboring France (the Alsace region) is very close by and easily accessible as well. The slogan “High Tech and High Life” alludes to a competence in future technologies like computer science, multimedia, measuring and control techniques, energy and environmental techniques. Economically, the service sector dominates Karlsruhe. Medium-size businesses are most common; however, large companies like Bosch, Siemens, DaimlerChrysler and Michelin also have production plants here and in the vicinity. The “Rheinhafen” (Karlsruhe’s harbour), built at the beginning of the 20th century, is the second largest inland harbour in Germany. Karlsruhe is also the seat of the two supreme courts in Germany: the Supreme Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) and the Court of Appeals (Bundesgerichtshof). At the same time, the natural setting with extensive forests, river banks and parks make life and recreation in Karlsruhe very pleasant. Karlsruhe is a friendly and clean city for guests and inhabitants. Its appearance is significantly influenced by classicist buildings, representative historic townhouses and fountains created by well-known artists. The picturesque streets and timbered framework buildings in the older suburbs of Karlsruhe still give parts of the city a medieval atmosphere. The “Fussgängerzone” (a pedestrian shopping area) in the city centre is lively, with all kinds of shops, banks, bookstores, bistros, street cafés and restaurants. Rich cultural offering are to be found at the “Badisches Staatstheater” (the state opera and theatre), the concert hall, the jazz club, several museums, exhibition centres and galleries, the baroque palace, libraries, cinemas and the Centre for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) of worldwide reputation which approaches all facets of art with modern technology and organizes the “Multimediale” art festival. Each year thousands of people are enthusiastic about “Das Fest”, a big music concert, which takes place in a park in the heart of the city. The University of Karlsruhe 4 The University of Karlsruhe (TH) is a public institution accredited by the state of BadenWürttemberg with particular research strengths in engineering, natural sciences and economic sciences, as well as strong programs in the humanities and social sciences. Established as a polytechnical school in 1825, the University of Karlsruhe is the oldest technical university in Germany and the largest of the seven institutions of higher education in Karlsruhe. The name “Fridericiana” was added in 1902 in commemoration of its patron, the Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden. Since 1899, it has been authorized to award doctoral degrees. Among the many outstanding researchers, professors and former students who have been connected with this university is Heinrich Hertz, who discovered the electromagnetic waves in Karlsruhe in 1888; his invention provided the basis for radio transmission technology and modern information systems. In the middle of the 19th century, Ferdinand Redtenbacher and Wilhelm Nusselt established the field of mechanical engineering in Germany. Carl Benz, one of the pioneers in the automobile industry, studied in Karlsruhe from 1860 to 1864 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1914. Otto Lehmann developed the crystallizing microscope and performed pioneering work in researching liquid crystals. The Fridericiana can also be proud of Nobel Prize winners: Fritz Haber succeeded in the high-pressure synthesis of ammonia and Ferdinand Braun developed the “Braunsche Röhre” in 1897 (the cathode ray tube). In 2002, approximately 15,000 students (including 2,500 foreign students from more than 80 countries) were enrolled. The 40 courses, leading to a Diplom, Magister Artium, “Staatsexamen”, Bachelor, Master or doctoral degree, are offered in 11 Departments: • • • • • • • • • • • Department of Mathematics Department of Physics Department of Chemistry and Biological Sciences Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Architecture Department of Civil Engineering, Geographical and Environmental Sciences Department of Mechanical Engineering Department of Chemical and Process Engineering Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Department of Computer Sciences Department of Economics and Industrial Engineering The University of Karlsruhe 5 More than 300 professors lecture and do research in more 120 institutes or departmental institutions of the university. In addition to the list of departments above, there are a numerous fields of special research and graduate research centres which complete the image of the university. The University of Karlsruhe emphasizes internationalization in research and teaching. Being aware of the importance of worldwide communication in the age of globalization the university encourages the students to take advantage of the opportunity to study in a foreign country and cooperates worldwide with a number of outstanding universities and research institutes. In this respect, the contacts to other universities in the EU play a special part: within the EU-program SOCRATES/ERASMUS agreements have been signed with 144 partner universities in 16 countries. In 2002, 250 ERASMUS students were guests at Karlsruhe University. Partnerships with universities in Eastern and Central Europe countries also play an important part in international activities. A further cooperation is organized within the TEMPUS-program. Through an agreement signed by the State of BadenWürttemberg exchanges are offered with universities in Massachusetts, Oregon, Connecticut, North Carolina, Arizona and Ontario for several years. To complete this, there are also contacts to universities in Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa. “Excellence by tradition “ is our motto in research and teaching, both of which enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide, that has been reflected in a range of rankings and evaluations. The renowned Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in Philadelphia places Karlsruhe among the “cream of the crop in Chemistry”. Architecture, computer science and industrial engineering are rated number 1 in national rankings. The quality of the research conducted at the university is due to the outstanding and highly motivated faculty. Many professors have earned a reputation by leadership in science and industry (at DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, ABB, etc.) working on an international level as top ranking managers and board directors. We keep in close contact and cooperate on many projects with industries and businesses of every size, thereby transferring scientific technical expertise and research results into practical applications. This opens possibilities for students to participate in many challenging research projects, and students who graduate from the university have excellent job prospects. Many recent graduates are now in well-paying and highly responsible positions in renowned international companies. The leading position of this university is mainly due to the large Department of Computer Science, the first of its kind to be established in Germany, in 1972. Other highlights are the industrial engineering program, which served as a model for this field of study across Germany I the 1970s, and the Department of Chemical Engineering, which is characterized by cooperation between the natural sciences and engineering. Research emphasis at the University of Karlsruhe is currently places on information and communication technology, energy research and power generation, automation and assembly technology, environmental research, waters and water technology, microstructure technology, nanotechnology, materials science, natural science, geoscience and geophysics, transportation science and banking and actuarial science. Studying at the Uni Karlsruhe • 6 The campus Situated in the heart of the city of Karlsruhe, the campus stretches across approximately 150 acres and is set close to extensive forests and a well-kept park. Historic landmark buildings beside modern experimental halls, laboratories and high-rise buildings are all set in a green environment that offers a welcome place to rest between classes. The library, lecture halls, laboratories, administrative and counselling offices are in close proximity to each other and can easy be reached by foot, bicycle or public transportation. • Organization of studies Studies are divided into two phases: Grundstudium (basic studies) and Hauptstudium (advanced and specialized studies). After 4 semesters of Grundstudium the Vordiplom is earned. The Vordiplom consists of a number of examinations which have to be passed in order to qualify for Hauptstudium. These examinations are taken continually in every semester of Grundstudium. The Hauptstudium consists of 5 to 6 semesters and as in the Gundstudium examinations are taken continually throughout this phase. At the end of the studies a thesis has to be written. Six months are allotted for this. Most departments require practical training in addition to regular studies. Socrates students usually enter into Hauptstudium and are generally admitted to all courses at this level. The Vorlesungsverzeichnis (course catalogue) informs you about courses take place where and when. It is advisable however to compare the information given in the Vorlesungsverzeichnis to those announced on the notice board of the institutes. Alterations are always possible! For most courses, summaries of lectures are available a the office of the Fachschaft (departmental students organization) or the Studentenwerk (student services) at the Studentenhaus. The Fachschaften often publish annotated course catalogues. • The University year The academic year is divided into two semesters: winter (October 1st to March 31st) and summer (April 1st to September 30th). Most courses start in the winter semester, with classes running from the middle of October through the middle February; during the summer semester, classes begin in the middle of April and end in the middle of July. The time between classes is used for internships, examinations and independent studies. Studying at the Uni Karlsruhe State Holidays: New Year(‘s Day) The Three Wise Men May Day Ascension of Christ Corpus Christi German Reunification All Saints’ Day Christmas Day 7 January 1st January 6th May 1st a Thursday in May a Thursday in June October 3rd November 1st December 25th, 26th There are breaks at Christmas (Dec. 24th – Jan. 6th), Easter and Pentecost. The exact dates can be found on the notice board of the university administration or in the course catalogue. • Examinations and written papers Most examinations are taken during the Semesterferien (between-term vacations). Some are also taken toward the end of the Vorlesungszeit (lecture period). There are no semester- or end of the year- examinations. Rather a certain number of examinations must be passed within a certain period of time. The exact dates of the examinations can be found on the notice board of the respective departments and usually the students themselves decide when to take which exam. Papers are often written during Semesterferien. This fact characterizes Semesterferien as “non-lecture periods” rather than vacations. • Recognition and transfer of credits Recognition and transfer of credits is most certainly an issue which is important to you if you will plan your stay in Karlsruhe. Your status as an Erasmus student is based on a cooperation agreement in which both parties have agreed upon mutual recognition and transfer of credits. In order to make the transfer of credits more transparent several department are establishing ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) which was initiated by the European Union. ECTS has already been introduced at numerous European universities: An information package/ECTS-handbook is available in the internet. Have a look at the homepages of the several departments. First steps after arrival • 8 Getting to Karlsruhe Karlsruhe is located in South-Western Germany. The city is easily accessible from the airports of Frankfurt/Main, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Strasbourg. Trains to Karlsruhe depart by the hour. From Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof (central station) you can get to the International Office by taking either tram no. 2 (direction of `Daxlanden’) or no. 4 (direction of ‘Waldstadt’). These trams leave the station every 10 minutes. You must get off the tram at ‘Karlstor’, the International Office is located directly across from the stop. To get to the university campus, take no. 3 (direction of ‘Siemensallee’) or no. 4 (‘Waldstadt’) or no. S4 (‘Bretten’). Depending on which building you want to visit you choose from several stops. On the campus map in the annex the stops are marked “H”. Please make sure to buy tickets for the tram (EUR 1.90 per ride, available from ticket machines at stops or from the driver. Caught without a ticket, the charge will be EUR 30,-). By car, you get to Karlsruhe from • Frankfurt, Heidelberg: motorway A5, exit: ‘Karlsruhe Mitte’ • Stuttgart: motorway A8, intersection Karlsruhe, motorway A5, exit: ‘Karlsruhe Mitte’ • Basel (CH): motorwar A5, exit: ‘Karlsruhe Mitte’ Within the city follow the signs ‘Universität’. Please use only public car parks. Police is very busy in Karlsruhe. • Housing Student accommodation is not always easy to find. Therefore, it is advisable to start looking for a place to live as early as possible. You can obtain help from: International Office As far as our means allow, we will gladly help you to find adequate accommodation. Unfortunately, the number of rooms available to us is very small, so we cannot guarantee accommodation to each student. For information please contact: Mrs. Melitta Habersaat International Office Tel.: +49 721 608 4919 Fax: +49 721 608 4918 Email: [email protected] First steps after arrival 9 Student Housing Office The ‘Studentenwerk’ (student services) and the ‘Studentenwohnheim e.V.’ currently offer approximately 3.000 rooms in student residences. In addition to this, there are several private and religious organizations which also run student residences. You will find a list of these in the internet: www.studentenwerk-karlsruhe.de/wohnen Private accommodation If you prefer living in a flat of your own, you may find respective ads in the local daily newspaper, the ‘Badische Neueste Nachrichten (BNN)’ or in the weeklies ‘Karlsruher Kurier’, ‘AZ’ and ‘Sperrmüll’. Another way of finding private accommodation is to contact a real estate agent. This, however, is often very expensive, because agencies charge commissions is up to the equivalent of three months rent. Rents can be as high as EUR 15,- per square meter. A very popular way of living is to share a flat with several other students (‘Wohngemeinschaft’ = flat-sharing community). Offers can be found on the notice boards all over the university and in the ‘Studentenwerk’. Prices for rooms range from EUR 125,through EUR 250,- per month, depending on size, furnishing and conditions. The prices include all utilities. Please note that good and reasonably prized accommodation is available on the outskirts of the city. Thanks to the very good public transportation system and the ‘Studiticket’ (see page 19), living outside from inner city is absolutely no problem. In case you haven’t found accommodation before your arrival in Karlsruhe, you can stay temporarily at the ‘Jugendherberge’ (Youth Hostel) which is located next to the ‘Fachhochschule’ (University of Applied Sciences). From here you can reach the university by foot in 15 minutes. If you are planning to stay at the Youth Hostel you will need to acquire a Youth Hostel pass which is valid for one year and costs EUR 10,50 (look at www.jugendherberge.de). The price per night including breakfast is EUR 17,30 for persons under the age of 27. It is advisable to make a reservation prior to arriving in Karlsruhe, especially at the beginning of the semester. You can book online. Contact: Jugendherberge Karlsruhe Moltkestr. 24, D-76187 Karlsruhe Tel.: +49 721 28248 Fax: +49 721 27647 www.jugendherberge-karlsruhe.de First steps after arrival 10 • Exemption from Compulsory Health Insurance Upon arrival in Germany you must provide for adequate health insurance coverage. The Federal Republic of Germany has a well-developed health service. The health insurance scheme pays for treatment by doctors or dentists as well as for hospital fees and many other treatments and prevention measures. Patients have to pay a base fee for medication and other medical items such as bandages. As s student, you are eligible to buy health insurance at the lowest monthly rate of € 54,52 (including € 7,92 nursing care insurance). Students from countries which have signed social agreements with Germany can stay insured in their home countries. In order to do this, a certificate confirming adequate insurance cover and an application form (E111 for the EU) must be presented to a local health insurance company which will then exempt you from compulsory insurance and enable you to consult German doctors free of charge. Students over the age of 30 are not eligible for this Student Health Insurance Scheme and must acquire private health insurance.
