This is our SMEURA, which used to be a huge fox farm near Pitesti
and about 120 kilometres away from Bucharest. This place saw so much
horrible pain and suffering during the Ceausescu Era.
In the year 2000 the city administration of Pitesti had thousands of
their stray dogs slaughtered in the most inhumane way in the Smeura
and subsequently threw the dogs – without them being really dead –
in mass graves filled with water.
Currently the SMEURA houses approximately 5,400 stray dogs that
we have saved from being murdered and killed – as well as thousands
of other dogs that could leave the SMEURA again. They all were / are
fed, medically treated, vaccinated and neutered by us. We know that
there won’t be any long-term reduction of the number of stray dogs
without a strict neutering program!
That is why we have neutered
over 50,000 dogs (and thousands
of cats) from Pitesti and the surrounding area since our arrival
in Romania. And we were able
to find a better home outside of
Romania for many of them.
When we learned about that in the spring of 2001, we immediately
got involved and, with the mayor’s consent, took over the responsibility for the remaining stray dogs of Pitesti as well as for the SMEURA itself. We also entered into an agreement with the city administration of Pitesti that allows us to neuter all dogs of the city at our
expense and to release some of them back on the streets, while the
city administration is no longer authorized to kill the dogs.

SMEURA – le plus grand refuge animalier du monde selon le livre Guinness
des records – lieu de refuge et d’espoir pour les chiens errants chassés.
Voici notre SMEURA, jadis une énorme ferme d’élevage de renards, qui se
trouve près de Pitesti, à environ 120 km de Bucarest. Du temps de Ceausescu ce lieu a été témoin de souffrances terribles en quantité inimaginable.
En 2000, sur ordre de la mairie de Pitesti, des milliers de chiens errants
ont été massacrés d’une manière atroce et inhumaine à SMEURA. Ils ont
ensuite été jetés – souvent encore vivants – dans des fosses communes
remplies d’eau.
Quand nous en avons pris connaissance en printemps 2001, nous sommes
immédiatement intervenus afin de prendre en charge, avec l’aval du maire,
les chiens errants restants à Pitesti ainsi que ceux restés à SMEURA. Mais
surtout le contrat conclu avec la mairie de Pitesti nous autorise à stériliser
(à nos frais) tous les chiens de la ville et, le cas échéant, de les remettre dans
la rue sans que la mairie n’ait le droit de les abattre.
C’est actuellement quelques 5400 chiens errants qui vivent sous le toit de
SMEURA. Tous ces chiens, ainsi que des milliers d’autres qui ont entretemps
eu la possibilité de quitter le refuge, ont été sauvés d’une mort atroce.
Ils ont été nourris, vaccinés et stérilisés et ont pu bénéficier de soins médicaux. Il ne peut y avoir de réduction durable d’animaux dans les rues
sans stérilisation systématique.
C’est la raison pourquoi nous avons
stérilisé plus de 50.000 chiens (et de
milliers de chats) de Pitesti et des
environs depuis notre arrivée. Pour
beaucoup d’entre eux nous avons
ensuite pu trouver un meilleur foyer
en dehors de la Roumanie.

Dies ist unsere SMEURA, früher eine riesige Fuchsfarm bei Pitesti,
ca. 120 km von Bukarest entfernt. Hier ist zu den Zeiten
Ceausescus unvorstellbar viel und furcht-bar gelitten worden.
Im Jahre 2000 ließ die Stadtverwaltung von Pitesti in der
SMEURA auf unmenschlichste Weise Tausende ihrer Straßenhunde umbringen, die dann - noch gar nicht ganz tot - in
mit Wasser vollgelaufene Massengräber geworfen wurden.
Unter den Dächern der SMEURA leben derzeit etwa
5.400 Straßenhunde, die wir – ebenso wie Tausende weitere,
die die SMEURA inzwischen verlassen konnten – vor Mord
und Totschlag gerettet haben. Sie alle werden / wurden durch
uns gefüttert, medizinisch versorgt, geimpft und kastriert.

Als wir im Frühjahr 2001 davon erfuhren, schalteten wir
uns sofort ein und übernahmen im Einverständnis mit dem
Bürgermeister sowohl die Verantwortung für die übrigen
Straßenhunde Pitestis als auch die SMEURA selbst. Auch
schlossen wir einen Vertrag mit der Stadt-verwaltung Pitestis,
wonach wir alle Hunde der Stadt auf unsere Kosten kastrieren
und z.T. wieder auf die Straßen zurücksetzen dürfen, die
Stadtverwaltung die Tiere aber nicht mehr töten darf.
Die traurigen Schicksale
der Straßentiere sind
endlos. Vergiftete,
schwerverletzte, gequälte,
verkrüppelte und kranke
Hunde gehören zum
täglichen Bild Rumäniens.
