TEXTO 01
Nova Scotia Pink Protests Against Bullying Spread Nationally and Internationally
Two Nova Scotia (province in Canada) students recently ATTRACTED worldwide attention when
they came up with a rather innovative plan to stop bullying at their school.
On the first day of class, a Grade 9 student in Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia was
BULLIED by a group of six to 10 classmates, calling him a homosexual for wearing a pink polo
shirt and threatening to beat him up.
Grade 12 students Travis Price and David Shepherd HEARD about the incident and decided to
do something about it.
They encouraged fellow students at Central Kings Rural High to wear pink-coloured clothing to
make the school a “sea of pink” two days later.
The duo went out and bought dozens of pink tank tops and DISTRIBUTED them to male
students to wear. Around 400 students – half the school’s population – dressed in pink and
congregated in the school’s lobby.
When the bullied student [who’s never been identified] arrived at school and saw his fellow
students decked out in pink, it was described as an emotional and empowering moment.
Knowing there was overwhelming support for the bullied student, the bullies themselves re portedly
became upset and threw a fit in the school’s cafeteria.
Word of the anti-bullying campaign quickly spread across the province, throughout the country
and around the world. Travis and David have repeatedly KEPT attention on their peaceful antibullying message, and not on themselves.
Even so, the duo has shown what a bit leadership can achieve; what a sense of community spirit
really means, and what can be achieved when positive thinking is allowed to lead the way.
With humdrum and discouraging attitudes flowing around us every day, it’s reassuring to know
individuals can have a positive impact not only on their own neighborhood, but the world over, as
well.

TEXTO 02 - QUADROS A a E - AS QUESTÕES 03 À 06 - REFEREM-SE AO TEXTO 02
Hotel Review: Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas
A
CityCenter, a new $8.5 billion development on the Las Vegas Strip, is a gutsy effort to bring modern
architecture to a city known for kitsch. At the center of the complex is the Aria hotel, which opened
in December with an astounding 4,004 rooms. The base of this 61-story building contains a casino, a
convention center, a spa, a Jean-Georges Steakhouse and an offshoot of Manhattan’s Bar Masa, and
more than a dozen other restaurants and bars. The hotel is huge, and it feels that way, but thanks to
thoughtful design, it also feels luxurious and, at times, even cozy.
A 96-Team Tournament? Now that’s Madness
B
It is never a surprise when sports officials act out of greed — the outrageous prices at New York’s
two subsidized ballparks, the gouging at the coming World Cup of soccer in South Africa, for
example.
Sometimes, I am stunned when people don’t have respect for their own product. I am talking here of
the threat to dilute the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament from a compelling 64 in the first
round to a ludicrous 96. (The N.C.A.A. counts 65 teams, including the early play-in game, but I
prefer to consider that a gimmick.)
Testing the iPad’s Trip-Worthiness
C
IF you plan on vacationing in the near future, you should be ready to share an airplane ride
with at least a few preening iPad owners. Whether you should succumb to gadget envy or not
depends on just what type of traveler you are.
Chords Unfold and Soar, Evoking Birds and Bells
D
Works by two Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of similar aesthetic bents were featured in the first
half of the Lark Quartet’s program at Merkin Concert Hall on Thursday evening.
The quartet was joined by the pianist Jeremy Denk for the premiere of Paul Moravec’s Piano
Quintet. Mr. Moravec, who won the Pulitzer in 2004, has said, “As a composer, I try always to
make beautiful things.” His compositional palette incorporates atonal and nontonal elements, but
within a primarily tonal framework.
When Pain Relievers Cause Bleeding
E
Millions take prescription and over-the-counter medicines to relieve arthritis pain, and all carry a long
list of side effects. But how dangerous are these pain relievers? Dr. Neena S. Abraham, a
gastroenterologist at the Michael E. DeBakey V.A. Medical Center and associate professor of
medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, recently took readers’ questions about ulcers,
a potentially life-threatening condition increasingly tied to Nsaid pain relievers. Here, Dr. Abraham
responds to a reader concerned about pain relievers and bleeding.
