The U of A is comprised of 18 faculties and schools across 5 campuses. With a student population of 39,500 from 152 different countries and annual external research funding of CAN $422 million, the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s premier public universities and centers for research excellence. Ranked fifth in Canada and among top 150 universities worldwide, the U of A is a major economic driver in the region. The university’s impact on the Alberta economy is an estimated $12.3 billion annually, or five per cent of the province’s gross domestic product. The University of Alberta cemented its longstanding partnership with Germany in 2010, with the establishment of the Helmholtz-‐Alberta Initiative (HAI) – research collaboration with the Helmholtz Association in the area of energy and the environment, and health. The U of A is committed to facilitating networking opportunities between the members of the German community on campus and raise awareness of Germany-‐related activities in Edmonton area through various events. One of them, the Stammtisch, initially co-‐organized by University of Alberta International, Office of the Vice-‐President (Research), Humboldt Foundation Liaison Office, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), German Academic International Network (GAIN), and German-‐Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) to welcome Germany’s Ambassador to the U of A in 2012, has since evolved into a regular highly-‐anticipated event.
