A new series presents the various companies in the Diehl Metering Group – starting with Sappel. Page 17 When we celebrated the 150th anniversary of Hydrometer GmbH last year, we were aware that a new chapter in the history of the company was about to begin. We benefit from a variety of synergies between our business units – and as a subgroup we gain from the strength of the Diehl Group. We thus experience a powerful international network – and a broader horizon for our possibilities. You’ll find a few selected examples of these in this magazine. I wish you interesting reading! Frank Gutzeit smarter #1 June 2013 IZAR mobile solution plus services Data collection in a flash An IZAR system even makes mobile reading of water and energy meters possible on driving by – at speeds of up to 50 km / h. This principle has been continuously optimized over the last ten years. In combination with hosted solutions and data services, mobile reading is now easier and more convenient than ever before – and soon pays for itself. The new IZAR mobile solution from Diehl Metering now offers a particularly economic form of automatic meter reading – ideal for shafts, domestic meters and other inaccessible meters. Hosted solutions and data services guarantee future-orientated data management right from the start. Energy utilities need no extra staff and can concentrate on their core business. Manual reading is dangerous and uneconomic Reading meters in shafts in accordance with the statutory safety regulations is costly and ties up resources. For example, two persons are always necessary for reading meters in shafts. The air quality must be checked – and suitable scaffolding erected to permit rescue action in the worst case. Although many water utilities usually read inaccessible meters only once a month, this is still very expensive in manpower terms. Reading meters in individual houses is also workintensive and thus costly: appointments must be arranged individually for each house. If the end consumer does not keep the appointment, the journey is for nothing. This means billing on a due date is not possible, so accurate data for final billing is often not available when tenants change. 4 5 The meter reader simply drives along the route – at up to 50 km /h. The meters are read via an IZAR Bluetooth receiver with the appropriate IZAR@Mobile software – automatically and within seconds. The same system platform is used for reading meters for water, thermal energy, gas and electricity. IZAR mobile solution plus services: With the convenient subscription system, the customer only pays for what he needs – and the services can be cancelled annually. Save personnel, work, time and money An IZAR system eliminates the need to enter shafts and houses – meters are read within seconds on walking by or conveniently by car at speeds of up to 50 km / h. Tampering and leaks can be detected during reading and cleared immediately. The time and thus cost are many times less than for conventional data acquisition »by pencil« – so the IZAR system soon pays for itself. Besides reading the meters, especially the IT facilities were extremely work- and cost-intensive in the past. Installation, maintenance and software updates tie up personnel resources. A technologically advisable change to another software necessitates additional investment and more familiarization training. The combination of a future-compatible IZAR infrastructure with a hosted solution or data services means these problems are now at last a thing of the past. This is new: energy data on subscription The basic principle of this new complete solution is that Diehl Metering takes care of everything – from the installation of the infrastructure and maintenance to software and data hosting. Utility companies collect consumption data only in drive-by or walk-by mode and transfer them to the Diehl Metering server via a mobile radio link or Internet – as often as advisable. This not only distinctly reduces the manpower cost of reading the meters, but also no longer ties up resources for installation, maintenance and software updates. Diehl Metering takes care of all the costly IT tasks in-house. Diehl Metering offers two powerful complete packages: · Energy utilities can use the hosted solution to access their data, carry out evaluations and create visualizations anywhere and at any time. · Alternatively, Diehl Metering processes the data tailored to the individual needs of the utility companies – and makes the data available by email or FTP server. Deciding to use the IZAR mobile solution plus services avoids unnecessarily tying up capital and ensures full flexibility for the utility company: With the convenient subscription system, the customer only pays for what he needs – and the services can be cancelled annually. The solution is continuously kept up to date by updates and maintenance. Clear decision for the future Energy utilities can face future developments with confidence. If required, the IZAR mobile solution can be expanded into a fully automatic fixed network at any time – and at manageable financial cost, because the same meters are used. The open system architecture also makes technologically advisable hardware and software upgrades possible without problems. Diehl Metering has continuously developed mobile meter reading over the past ten years – and radio ranges and data actuality have been appreciably improved. Only high-precision measuring instruments and efficient technologies from the company’s own development and production are installed. So an IZAR solution is the reliable, cost-effective and future-compatible basis for all data and processes. Utility companies profit from prompt and accurate data acquisition, continuous communication and exact consumption profiles. They can therefore convincingly meet the legislative requirements and safety regulations and are equipped for the great opportunities offered by tomorrow’s energy industry. smarter #1 June 2013 Berliner Wasserbetriebe 100 % performance at 50 km / h An extensive IZAR mobile solution has been taken into operation in Berlin: 100 % of the water meters are read reliably in drive-by mode – which is a tremendous improvement in efficiency particularly for inaccessible meters. Berliner Wasserbetriebe supplies 3.5 million people in Berlin and the surrounding region with drinking water and is one of the largest companies in the water industry. In the current project, 1,900 water meters are read by radio for the degewo housing development company – via drive-by at speeds up to 50 km / h. The extensive solution has been implemented by Hydrometer, a business unit of Diehl Metering. Creating added value for end consumers Water metering and consumption management services are part of the core business of Berliner Wasserbetriebe. Innovative concepts have been developed in the past years in order to offer end consumers real added value and increase customer satisfaction. On the other hand, the aim was to improve the efficiency of meter reading and consumption management. 6 7 Photos: Berliner Wasserbetriebe Innovative concepts have been developed in the past years in order to offer end consumers real added value and increase customer satisfaction. The current project has distinctly optimized the service for degewo tenants: »Our motivation was to keep reading the meters on a due date to reduce the measurement differences when billing consumption and speed up the billing process for preparing the operating cost bill,« says Anett Grygier from the Tenant and Operating Cost Management Division at degewo. Besides current meter counts and various actual counts at the measuring points, the new mobile solution enables the meter data to be read exactly on the due date – to obtain correspondingly rapid billing. This ensures that the end consumer is only billed for his actual consumption. The introduction of the new solution has led to a definite reduction in tenants’ objections. New efficiency from reading through to billing 100 % performance means 100 % satisfaction The work and time saved by the staff of Berliner Wasserbetriebe is immense: time-consuming visits to cellars and climbing down into shafts are eliminated. The rotary piston meters are equipped with a radio module – and are now read by radio. The performance of a system solution is measured mainly by the number of meters that can be read reliably and automatically. The Diehl Metering project team in Berlin has again succeeded in achieving a reliable reachability of 100 %. The consumption data are collected via a radio receiver and reader on driving by at up to 50km / h, transmitted digitally to the customer’s account in the company, and transferred from there to the bills. The project was implemented, tested and commisioned within a few months. Apart from equipping the rotary piston meters with clip-on radio modules, no other installation or building work was necessary. Due to the good experience with the project and the high degree of customer satisfaction, the project will be expanded shortly. Berliner Wasserbetriebe is pleased about the work saved, the cost optimization and the distinct improvement of the service provided for end consumers. smarter #1 June 2013 Open Metering System Do you speak smart? The Open Metering System (OMS) is the only specification in Europe that allows communication between a wide range of different meters and reliable reading of water, thermal energy, gas and electricity meters from various manufacturers on one interoperable system platform. Hydrometer played a decisive role in promoting the definition of the OMS specification and hosted the OMS board meeting in March. OMS is based on European standards, is supported by the industry and is thus a communication standard for the future. Working together for intelligent and reliable communication: H. Trottler, Hydrometer; W. Domschke, Managing Director Smarvis; H. Lux, Director KNX Association; Dr. W. von Pattay, General Manager OMS; G. Graß, Director General FIGAWA; A. Bolder, Senior Expert Smart Metering, Telekom Deutschland; J. Frech, Director Technical Excellence & Sales Administration, L & G (from left to right). Operators of measuring points, such as public utilities, need investment security. The OMS specification is the answer: OMS meters are the basis and a prerequisite for an open and interoperable system platform for the future. As OMS meters from different manufacturers can be combined without problems, the choice of suppliers is unrestricted. The investment in the meter park maintains its value in the long term, because OMS is based on European standards, is supported by the industry and is thus a communication standard for the future. So measuring point operators keep all prospects open by using OMS meters. For energy management of the future OMS ensures direct communication with the meters designed for this system – from reading consumption, controlling the meters, localizing defective meters and detecting leaks to switching off the meters. The EN 50090 standard has been incorporated in the OMS application profile to enable smooth visualization of consumption data and integration of building automation ( Smart Home ) at the consumer’s. Meters are integrated for various media – and even the qualitative attributes of a medium are taken into account, for example, the difference between natural gas and biogas. The OMS Technical Report Security and the OMS Specification / Primary Communication for wireless communication between the meters and the gateway are an integral part of the Technical Guideline ( TR ) 03109-1 issued by the German Federal Office for Information Security ( BSI ). All the opportunities for Smart Metering can be used with OMS as the basis. Consumption transparency, monthly billing, new products and added services improve customer retention, and new target groups, applications and markets can be developed. The variety of personal consumption data processed in automatic meter reading ( AMR ) and Smart Metering results in high standards of data protection and data security. It is therefore important to develop solutions for the introduction of future-orientated energy data management that are not only intelligent, but secure, too. Finally, OMS also provides the basis for the introduction of smart grids for reducing energy consumption and for smooth integration of renewable energy as an essential requirement for the planned energy turnaround. For reliable international standards Data protection, data security and access protection are a basic requirement and an integral part of the OMS concept from the start. The Open Metering System is designed for long-term operation. Security standards have been defined with appropriate care to withstand hacker attacks or malware. 8 9 For a common language OMS is backed by the OMS Group – an interest group of associations like FIGAWA and KNX and companies with a joint aim: to find a common communication standard, a common language. The Open Metering System Specification has been developed as an open, non-proprietary specification for communication interfaces and basic requirements for devices. Diehl Metering with its Hydrometer business unit was a driving force in the development of the OMS Specification from the very beginning. The Open Metering Initiative has checked the application of existing standards to interoperable communication of metering systems and has developed supplements and specific aspects in several working groups since May 2007. One major challenge was to define a solution for wire-based and wireless transmission of energy values. The M-Bus to European standard EN 13757 was chosen as the basis. A wide variety of manufacturers’ solutions were incorporated in a clear interoperable specification. Telecommunication facilities are provided using established Internet standards, with transmission either direct via an in-house DSL connection or via mobile radio networks such as GPRS. For better cooperation in Europe The Open Metering System Group has already initiated the next steps for implementing the standard: A neutral body will carry out a binding certification to ensure the compatibility of all devices with the OMS specification in practice. It goes without saying that all communication system components from Diehl Metering already meet the OMS specification. smarter #1 June 2013 Diehl Metering at exhibitions Mission energy efficiency Solutions are called for. Customers all over the world expect more than innovative products and technologies: The time is ripe for integrated concepts for handling natural resources and energy – and the relevant services. Diehl Metering is on the right track with its »smart in solutions« approach. The visitors experienced a convincing display of real-time monitoring: The consumption of water, thermal energy, gas and electricity live on screen. E-world 2013, Essen Creating all-round solutions for the energy industry Diehl Metering appeared at an exhibition for the first time together with the Diehl Controls Group: At E-world energy & water, which took place in Essen from 5 – 7 February 2013, the company presented extensive one-stop solutions for modern energy supply and distribution under the motto of »Energy Solutions by Diehl«. Two groups, one concern: efficiency Diehl Metering focused attention on integrated solutions for Smart Metering. The comprehensive spectrum of products and services ranges from intelligent metering technology for reading water, thermal energy, gas and electricity to automatic meter reading systems for energy data and energy services. Customers and exhibition visitors obtained information about the innovative power, efficiency and sustainability of the solutions from the many Smart Metering projects already completed. The visitors experienced a particularly impressive display of realtime monitoring of a multi-utility project in the Middle East: the consumption of water, thermal energy, gas and electricity was followed live on the screen using interactive graphics. Diehl Controls took over exactly where the responsibility of Diehl Metering ends: at the front door. Diehl Controls presented its innovative Smart Eco System, an integrated solution that allows people direct access to their home and energy management system. The basic principle: The energy and electricity consumption is adapted to the current supply situation – demand-based, flexible and automatic. The aim is to achieve an energy-independent house through the use of the most intelligent control system possible. Orientation to integrated solutions accepted The 13th edition of the E-world energy & water exhibition has again increased massively in importance. More than 23,000 visitors from politics and the energy industry were registered in only three days. The five exhibition halls with more than 600 exhibitors were geared completely to improved cost-effectiveness. This impressive response shows the great relevance of sustainable handling of natural resources and energy. The integrated solution orientation of Diehl Metering and Diehl Controls again proved to be a suitable answer to the questions of the energy utilities and end consumers and to the legislative requirements. Because the whole energy life cycle must first be considered before solutions can be designed that are economic and sustainable. 10 11 Ultrasonic technology ensures optimum precision and long-term stability – even with heavily soiled water or air in the pipes. Wetex 2013, Dubai Bringing fresh water and cool air to the desert climate Diehl Metering exhibited at the 15th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition – in short WETEX – from 15 – 17 April 2013. More than 1,000 companies from 30 countries gathered in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, where the leading international companies in the water, energy and environmental industry presented the latest technologies, products, solutions and services, exchanged ideas, made contacts and examined and discussed reference projects. Ideal solutions for the MENA region Diehl Metering took their newest developments for water, thermal energy, gas and electricity to Dubai – plus solutions for automatic meter reading ( AMR ) and Smart Metering. The ultrasonic technology used in the SHARKY heat and cooling meter and the HYDRUS water meter attracted special attention. Both meters are best-sellers in the Gulf States and define the future of metering in the MENA region ( Middle East, North Africa ). The ultrasonic technology ensures optimum precision and long-term stability – even with heavily soiled water or air in the pipes. The innovative combination of ultrasonic technology and integrated communication makes SHARKY and HYDRUS ideal for Smart Metering and AMR. Attraction of successful system projects The exhibition visitors showed lively interest in the products offered by Diehl Metering. Issues such as fair consumption billing, saving energy, clearing leaks, maintenance and life cycle costs and meter communication with real data were discussed at a high level with existing and potential new customers. Radio-based system solutions once again proved to be the hottest trend for the MENA region – as shown by the latest success stories of Diehl Metering in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Not forgetting Saudi Arabia, where several thousand HYDRUS water meters were recently combined in a single radio-based network. smarter #1 June 2013 Wasser Berlin International Offering the customers added value with data services Wasser Berlin International took place in the German capital from 23 – 26 April 2013. The close link between the trade fair and congress makes Wasser Berlin the ideal platform for the international industry – for meeting, discussing and examining innovations. This lively analysis is the best way for specialists from all over the world to obtain a comprehensive picture of the dynamic technological developments and tackle the challenges facing the precious resource water. More performance in Metering Systems Diehl Metering presented its extensive spectrum of products and services for water – and naturally for thermal energy, gas and electricity too. Besides the HYDRUS ultrasonic water meter, attention was mainly focused on the technologies for automatic meter reading ( AMR ). Diehl Metering has again succeeded in achieving 100 % performance in a system project ( see page 6 of this issue ). This absolutely reliable and highly efficient infrastructure attracted great attention among utility companies, because this makes system engineering consistently efficient and calculable in the long term – and reduces the investment risks. 12 13 The positive feedback at Wasser Berlin confirmed that Diehl Metering is on the right track with its expansion of the service segment. New services create premium access The second revolutionary innovation at this year’s Wasser Berlin was in the services segment: Diehl Metering now also offers the option of hosting energy data or processing data to customers' specific requirements ( see page 4 of this issue ). So customers no longer need to be involved with IT, invest in software or provide personnel for these tasks. On the other hand, they benefit from an intelligent infrastructure and can use all the opportunities offered by Smart Metering. The hosting solution or data processing service is available by convenient subscription – and can be cancelled annually. The visitors’ great interest and the positive feedback at Wasser Berlin confirmed that Diehl Metering is on the right track with its expansion of the service segment. Many utility companies want Smart Metering, but would like easier access to the technology and energy data management. smarter #1 June 2013 New Drinking Water Ordinance Quality sip by sip With the introduction of the new stricter Drinking Water Ordinance, all meters affected will be checked and the materials consistently changed. So metering technology also contributes to improving the quality of drinking water – quality is not only measurable at Diehl Metering, but drinkable too. The new Drinking Water Ordinance ( TVO ) has been in force in Germany since May 2012. Its aim is to improve the quality of drinking water and protect the health of end consumers. The legislation for securing and monitoring the quality of drinking water is based on the German Infection Protection Act ( IfSG ). Stricter requirements in Germany The Drinking Water Ordinance is based on a harmonized consensus between the European legislators, but the German ordinance defines a stricter quality standard than under European law. As a leading producer of intelligent water meters, Diehl Metering is naturally also affected by the ordinance, which specifies increased requirements for the materials used for housings. The brass alloys used in all meters approved for drinking water will therefore now be adapted to comply with the requirements of the new ordinance. The maximum permissible lead content in drinking water will be reduced from 25 µg / l to 10 µg / l with effect from 1 December 2013. Focus on human health Paragraph 17 (1) of the Drinking Water Ordinance stipulates: »For the new installation or maintenance of plant used for processing or distributing water for human consumption, materials may only be used if when in contact with water they do not give off substances in concentrations higher than those unavoidable in recognized engineering practice, do not directly or indirectly reduce the protection of human health intended by this directive or do not change the smell or taste of the water.« 14 15 w In future, Diehl Metering will select and process metal materials completely in line with the new standards of the Federal Environment Agency. The stated engineering practice is also described in the pre-standard pr DIN 509030-6. This standard mainly defines hygienic requirements for metal materials in contact with drinking water. This draft DIN standard specifies that with effect from 1 December 2013, materials can only be used in drinking water supply grids if they are classified by the Federal Environment Agency as »hygienically suitable for drinking water«. Federal Environment Agency defines standards The Federal Environment Agency published a list of materials of proven »hygienic suitability for drinking water« on 1 December 2012. All the listed materials can accordingly be safely used, as the discharge of metal from the materials into the drinking water has been thoroughly tested and classified as safe. The requirements applicable in Germany are among the world’s strictest standards. The suitability is verified using long-term tests to DIN EN 15664-1 and tests with various drinking waters to DIN EN 15664-2. Good cooperation between the groups In future, Diehl Metering will select and process metal materials completely in compliance with the new standards of the Federal Environment Agency. This important contribution to improving the quality of drinking water will protect the health of end consumers and maintain product quality at the highest technological – and hygienic – level. As part of the Diehl Group, Diehl Metering possesses optimum qualities for convincingly mastering the new requirements: Diehl Metall with its innovative metal alloys and its representative function on the specialist bodies is the long-term, reliable and costeffective partner in this field. This makes full use of the synergies in the Diehl Group. smarter #1 June 2013 New wall display at Hydrometer Electronic Hands-on Smart Metering As competence centre for system solutions, Hydrometer Electronic combines technologies, reading strategies and services. To make the performance, efficiency and sustainability of these solutions comprehensible, an interactive wall display has now been installed in the ante room of the conference rooms. The measured values are visualized almost instantly on a large touch-screen monitor. The great prospects offered by Smart Metering are part of everyday work at Diehl Metering, but due to the complexity of the individual applications they are sometimes not easy to communicate. The benefits of smart solutions can now be tested in a very practical way in Donaustraße in Nuremberg. Constructive use of chance offered by modernization When the modernization of the conference rooms at Hydrometer Electronic was planned, the opportunity was used to create the optimum facilities for a communication corner – and implement the wall display. »The wall display is intended to give customers, partners and our own staff the opportunity to examine the system, ask questions and get new ideas,« says the responsible Product Manager Jörg Feuchtmeier, »before you realize it, you’re involved in a lively discussion«. Researching innovative technologies by playing Gaining real new knowledge Four experiments for specific media enable meters to be used for water, thermal energy, gas and electricity – and produce real measured values. The meter display is rounded off with visual effects. In addition to the four water and energy meters on the wall display, the premises in Donaustraße are equipped with about 70 other cross-media consumption meters with radio modules, which are read via four IZAR RDC-S receivers. This »real-time reading« is symbolically transmitted by various methods of automatic meter reading. The measured values are visualized almost instantly on a large touch-screen monitor by means of the user interface of the IZAR@NET software. The parallel installation of the client software on the computers in the conference rooms makes it possible to demonstrate the functions in discussions with customers at any time. The continuous monitoring and the evaluation of the data at any time provide valuable knowledge on the consumption of sub-areas like the canteen or SMD soldering line. This enables the monthly billing process to be tested and optimized – admittedly by playing, but certainly with real scientific interest. The principle is learning by doing. Jörg Feuchtmeier will be pleased to provide more information on request: [email protected] 16 17 Companies in the Diehl Metering Group – Sappel Précision toujours This new series presents the various companies in the Diehl Metering Group – starting with Sappel.
