This examination procedure is used to visualize the thyroid function. For the examination a short-lived, slightly radioactive substance is injected in your arm vein.
In the thyroid metabolism this substance behaves similar to the iodine ingested with
the food, thus permitting a visualization of the metabolism of this gland.
After the examination substance has taken effect for about 15 to 20 minutes, the
function image of the thyroid is taken. It shows the functional distribution within the
thyroid gland thus making on the one hand “hot nodules“ (with abnormally increased
hormone output) and “cold nodules“ (with abnormally decreased metabolism) visible
and on the other hand a diffuse hyperfunction or hypofunction of the thyroid gland.
A comprehensive evaluation of the thyroid requires, in addition to scintigraphy, knowledge of the ultrasonic test result, if applicable.
Information on the anamnesis, previously taken thyroid drugs and possibly laboratory
values as well are included in the assessment. For this reason you get a corresponding
questionnaire before the examination starts.
On the examination day please do not take your thyroid medicine, but bring it along
with you for the examination. Apart from this you can eat and drink as usual before
the examination. You don‘t have to remain fasting.
We are gladly at your disposal to answer any further questions.
