A Message from Pastor Christian
Thoughts while Painting
Did you know that renovating and painting
has a spiritual aspect to it? I had some
thoughts come to me as we stood/kneeled
several afternoons and evenings in the
kitchen of the church last week and piece
by piece gave the kitchen a new and fresh
face.
a whole bunch of single children, but calls
us into families.“ Together we are called
upon to work on God’s goals for this world
and not to separate ourselves with petty
disagreements and arguments.
We need to work together!
If you are working on a common renovation
project it really is necessary to pay double
attention to each other and to listen
because otherwise you end up doing
double work or you actually forget to paint
something.
In our congregation too, we must listen to
each other and pay attention to each other.
No one should think that what they have to
say is unimportant – perhaps it is
something that the other person needs to
hear. Perhaps it reveals something that the
other person has forgotten.
Everyone can contribute something!
Often people think that they really do not
have anything that they can contribute to
the success of our congregation because
they don’t have any spiritual gifts. But this
painting job showed me again that
everyone can contribute something. As a
congregation we not only need a preacher
but also people who are able to practically
help to do things.
Many of those who helped to paint did this
for the first time. Obviously not everything
is perfect but everyone made a big effort
and in addition learned something. It is
possible to discover new gifts which one
has. It is as Paul wrote: “But to each one is
given the manifestation of the Spirit for the
common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7).
Painting and Reformation
Now I admit that it is perhaps a bit of an
exaggeration to speak of church reform
when we are talking about painting in the
church.
But as we
were
painting
downstairs
a group of
people
Together it is just more fun!
Work that is shared is just less strenuous
when you can do it together with someone.
It just seems as if it really is not work then.
A theologian once said : God doesn’t have

Since they arrived an hour later than what
was originally planned I was dressed in my
painting gear again. So then I had to greet
them in my work gear covered in paint to
tell them about the history of the church. I
greeted them with the words „As you can
see, we are still a church of reformation“.
(Maybe Martin Luther only wanted to repair
something on the church door when he
went there with a hammer and nails!“)
Just like our kitchen needed a painting job
our church also needs a spiritual
renovation from time to time. We always
need to ask ourselves if what we do and
These are just a few thoughts that have
gone through my head while painting in the
kitchen.

News from the Congregation
Church Roof
The reconstruction of the church roof will
be starting soon. Unfortunately we won’t be
able to use metal tiles, since the products
council would like to use are not available
with the company we chose now to do the
work. Because council doesn’t want to
have any further delays with a new
tendering process it was decided to use
asphalt shingles instead. We shall be using
copper for the tower.
Happy birthday to all who have birthdays in
May. In particular we wish to congratulate
Frank Penkala, Helga Kavanagh and
Margit Rinck.
We would like to congratulate Christoph
and Claudia Pfrommer on the birth of their
daughter Mareike born on March 13, 2010.
Church Council Members
Congratulations to Edith and Bruno
Hesas on their 60th wedding anniversary
on April 15.
Congratulations and thank you to the
people who have volunteered to be on
Church Council. Our new Church Council
members are Gordon Chu, Rolf Kolossa
and Friedrich Brunzema (Vice Chair). Still
on Council are Stephanie von Bargen
(Chair), David Berg, Waldemar Fischer,
Dennis Miles (Vice Chair), David Wong
(Treasurer) and Sina Schweter as the
youth representative. We thank Manya
Brunzema, Beatrice Lechner and Ryan
Carey for the years they were on Church
Council.
We are saddened by the
deaths of Harry Steinke
and Anita Lechner who
both passed away in
April.
Our
deepest
sympathy goes to their
families.

Choir Concert on Ascension Day
Volunteers Wanted for
Doors Open
On Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day),
May 13 at 7:30 p.m. we shall be welcoming
the Concordia College Choir from New
York for a concert here at our church. We
hope as many people as possible can
come and listen to this choir which comes
well recommended. For more detailed
information please go to the April
newsletter.
Yes, it’s that time of the year again! On
May 29 and 30, First Lutheran will open its
doors to the public for the eighth time as
we participate in the Toronto Doors Open
programme. This is an occasion on which
numerous buildings in Toronto of
architectural or historical interest welcome
members of the public to visit.
Doors Open is an excellent opportunity for
us to make our existence known at no cost
to the broader Toronto community as well
as to showcase our beautiful heritage
church. Last year more than 700 people of
all ages and backgrounds visited us over
the two days. Some visitors had never
before been in a Christian church.
Our picnic this year will take place in High
Park on Sunday, June 13. There will be no
worship service here at the church on that
day. We are at spot 26. You may enter
from Parkside Drive through High Park
Blvd. – keep left. Our shelter is the first at
the left side. We are close to the Jamie Bell
Adventure playground. There is no parking
directly at the picnic shelter. Parking is 200
m. away at the zoo. The worship starts at
11 a.m.
Even though people of German descent
make up one of the largest ethnic groups
within Canada, there is very little concrete
evidence of this. First Lutheran is one of
the very few examples of a German
heritage building in Toronto.
We will be open on Saturday, May 29 from
10:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday, May
30 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Volunteers are
required on those two days, or for parts of
the two days, to greet visitors in the church
sanctuary, hand out pamphlets, and
answer visitors’ questions.
Confirmation Sunday
On May 23rd (Pentecost)
we’ll
celebrate
the
confirmation
of
Alexandra Schoenborn
and Kristina Zander
with a festive bilingual
worship service. May
God bless both of them
on this very special
occasion.

Eine Botschaft von Pastor Christian
Gedanken beim Streichen
Wussten Sie, dass sogar das Renovieren und
Streichen eine geistliche Seite hat?
Mir sind dazu ein paar Gedanken gekommen,
als wir letzte Woche ein paar Nachmittage und
Abende in der Küche unserer Kirche gestanden
(bzw. gekniet haben) und sie Stück für Stück
mit einem neuen und frischen Gesicht versehen
haben.
JEDER
Einzelkinder, sondern beruft uns in eine
Familie.“
Wir sind gemeinsam berufen, uns für Gottes
Ziele in der Welt einzusetzen und uns nicht
durch kleinliche Streitigkeiten auseinander
bringen zu lassen.
WIR
HAT ETWAS BEIZUTRAGEN!
So oft denken Menschen, dass sie ja doch
nichts zum Gelingen der Gemeinde beizutragen
haben, weil sie keine besonderen geistlichen
Begabungen haben. Aber das gemeinsame
Streichen hat mir wieder einmal gezeigt, dass
jeder etwas beizutragen hat. Als eine Gemeinde
brauchen wir nicht nur Prediger, sondern
Menschen, die praktisch mit anpacken und
helfen Dinge zu erledigen.
Etliche von denen, die mit geholfen haben zu
streichen, haben das auch zum ersten Mal
gemacht. Sicher, nicht alles ist perfekt
gelungen, aber jeder hat sich die größte Mühe
gegeben und etwas dazu gelernt. Auf diese
Weise kann man ja auch neue Begabungen bei
sich entdecken.
Es ist so wie Paulus schreibt (1. Korinther 12,7:
„In einem jeden offenbart sich der Geist zum
Nutzen aller.“
GEMEINSAM
MACHT ES EINFACH MEHR
MÜSSEN
ZUSAMMENARBEITEN!
Bei einem gemeinsamen Renovierungsprojekt
muss man schon aufeinander achten und
hören, ansonsten macht man alle Arbeit
doppelt, oder vergisst etwas zu streichen.
Auch in der Gemeinde müssen wir aufeinander
achten und einander zuhören. Keiner sollte
denken, dass das, was er zu sagen hat
unwichtig ist – vielleicht ist es ja etwas, was ein
anderer hören muss; vielleicht zeigt es etwas
auf, das ein anderer vergessen hat.
STREICHEN
UND
REFORMATION
Nun, ich gebe zu, dass es etwas übertrieben ist,
von einer Kirchenreform zu sprechen, wenn wir
die Küche streichen. Aber als wir unten am
Streichen waren, kam eine Gruppe Isländer, um
sich die Kirche anzusehen. Da sie eine Stunde
später
kamen als
angemeldet
, war ich
schon wieder in meinen
Arbeitssachen.
Nun
musste ich
sie
voller
SPAß!
Geteilte Arbeit ist einfach weniger anstrengend
und wenn man etwas gemeinsam macht, dann
fällt es gar nicht so auf, dass es Arbeit ist. Ein
Theologe hat mal gesagt: „Gott hat nicht lauter

Farbkleckse begrüßen und ihnen über die
Geschichte der Kirche erzählen. Ich begrüßte
sie mit den Worten: „Wie Sie sehen, sind wir
immer noch eine Kirche der Reformation.“ (Ob
Martin Luther auch nur etwas an der Kirchentür
reparieren wollte, als er mit Hammer und
Nägeln dort hinging?)
So, wie unsere Küche einen neuen Anstrich
brauchte, so braucht unsere Kirche auch immer
wieder einen geistlichen Anstrich. Wir müssen
uns immer wieder fragen, ob das, was wir tun
und wie wir es tun, noch zeitgemäß ist und es
die Menschen mit Gottes Wort erreicht.
Dies sind ein paar der Gedanken, die mir beim
Streichen in der Küche durch den Kopf
gegangen sind.

Nachrichten aus der Gemeinde
Kirchenvorstand
Herzlichen Dank für ihre Mitarbeit im
Kirchenvorstand an Manya Brunzema,
Ryan Carey und Beatrice Lechner.
Als neue Mitglieder freuen wir uns
begrüßen zu dürfen: Friedrich Brunzema
(stellvertretender Vorsitzender), Gordon

dazu.
Kirchendach
Die Erneuerung des Kirchendaches wird
bald in Angriff genommen werden. Leider
wird es nicht möglich sein, Metall zu
verwenden, da die Produkte, die uns
zusagen, nur von bestimmten Firmen
vertreten werden. Da der Kirchenrat keine
weiteren Verzögerungen haben möchte,
und die Arbeiten erneut ausschreiben, hat
er beschlossen, Asphalt-Shingles zu
benutzen, dafür aber den Turm dafür mit
Kupfer zu decken.

festlichen
Gottesdienst.

Freiwillige gesucht
für Doors Open
Ja, es ist wieder an der Zeit. Am 29. und 30.
Mai wird die Erste Lutherische Kirche zum
8ten Mal wieder bei Doors Open
mitmachen. Verschiedene historisch und
architektonisch
interessante
Gebäude
werden an diesem Tage geöffnet sein für
die Allgemeinheit.
Doors Open ist eine hervorragende
Möglichkeit für uns unsere Kirche dem
Publikum vorzuzeigen. So können sie
sehen, dass es uns gibt und dass wir auch
ein
sehr
schönes
historisches
Kirchengebäude
haben.
Letztes Jahr
besuchten uns an diesen zwei Tagen über
700
Menschen
verschiedenster
Altersgruppen
und
Herkunft.
Einige
Besucher waren noch nie in einer
christlichen Kirche.
Konzert am Himmelfahrtstag
Am 13. Mai wird der Concordia College
Chor aus New York bei uns zu Gast sein,
und um 19:30 Uhr ein Konzert in unserer
Kirche veranstalten.
Der Chor unternimmt jedes Jahr eine
Konzertreise durch einige US Staaten, wird
aber in diesem Jahr auch einige Konzerte in
Quebec und Ontario geben.
Der Eintritt ist frei. Wir bitten aber um eine
großzügige Spende für den Chor, um
entstehende Kosten auszugleichen.
Kommt und lasst Euch diesen Genuss nicht
entgehen – und vergesst nicht Eure
Freunde und Familien mitzubringen.
Obwohl Menschen mit einem deutschen
Hintergrund eine der grössten ethnischen
Gruppen in Kanada sind, sieht man
eigentlich wenig davon. Die Erste
Lutherische Kirche ist eines der wenigen
Beispiele eines deutschen historischen
Gebäude in Toronto.
Wir werden Samstag, den 29. Mai von
10:00 Uhr bis 17:00 Uhr geöffnet sein und
am Sonntag, dem 30. Mai von 13:00 Uhr bis
17:00 Uhr. Wir suchen freiwillig Helfer für
beide Tage oder auch für einen Teil des
Tages, um Gäste in der Kirche zu
begrüßen, Merkblätter zu verteilen und
auch um Fragen der Besucher zu
beantworten.

wenden Sie sich bitte an Edward Schlauch416-463-8253.
Wir wollen hoffen, dass bis dahin unser
Dach fertig gemacht ist, so dass die Leute
auch wirklich unsere Kirche finden können!
Kirchen Picknick
Unser Kirchenpicknick findet in diesem Jahr
am Sonntag, den 13. Juni im High Park
statt. Unser Platz (mit Dach) ist #26. Bitte
benutzen Sie den Eingang vom Parkside
Drive aus (High Park Blvd). An der
Gabelung links halten. Wir haben den
ersten Picknick Platz auf der linken Seite,
gleich neben der Toilette.
Wir sind in diesem Jahr ganz in der Nähe
vom Jamie Bell Abenteuerspielplatz.
Leider gibt es keine Parkplätze direkt bei
unserem Platz, aber 200m Meter entfernt
beim Zoo sind ausreichend Parkplätze
vorhanden. Der Gottesdienst beginnt um
11:00 Uhr.

Kitchen Painting Project
After the repairs – due to the water damage –
were done, our kitchen was in need of new
paint. And it was all too green.
So volunteers of all ages (8 – 82) and all skill
levels (beginner – DIY’er) got together to do
the
painting.
The
kitchen
had to be
cleaned
out, the
walls had
to
be
repaired,
and then
to
be
primed – inside and out.
However, as it happens only too often, if you
start
a
renovation
project, you’ll
unfortunately
find
more
things to be
done:
The
lower
cabinets
at
the north side
of the kitchen were mouldy and we discovered
that the bottom boards were completely rotten.
This meant we couldn’t do these cabinets and
have to get professional help.
It was a whole lot of fun, especially the breaks.
Now the kitchen is not all green anymore, but
yellow.
Not only the walls and cabinets got painted, but
fingers, hair, cheeks ....
A very warm ‘thank you’ to all who helped to
make this project a success. We especially
thank Dennis Miles who organized the project
and to Katja, who made the pictures.
And then came the painting itself.
