HOW TO GET THERE
Chega-se ao Príncipe de barco e
de avião. A ilha dista cerca de 140
quilómetros de São Tomé, em direcção Nordeste. A companhia aérea
de São Tomé e Príncipe disponibiliza
quatro voos semanais entre as duas ilhas num aparelho de 18 lugares e cuja
viagem demora cerca de 50 minutos.
Se pretender deslocar-se de barco
pode optar por travessia em embarcações de carga, que demoram oito
horas, tendo horários e periodicidade
incerta. As obras de modernização do
aeroporto e a construção do porto
estão em curso, pelo que mais-diamenos-dia a ilha será acessível por
aviões de muito maior capacidade e
por embarcações com horários mais
regulares e dedicadas a passageiros.
Creia o viajante amante de viagens
inesquecíveis que não lhe vale a pena
esperar por esses melhoramentos porque a recompensa justifica a
paciência e os ganhos são incalculáveis,
acrescidos em deleite, lazer, prazeres

You get to the island of Principe by boat
and by plane. The island is located
around 140 kilometers from São Tome,
heading northeast. The São Tome and

Principe airline offers four weekly flights
between the two islands in a 18 seat
aircraft on a 50 minute-flight. If you
want to go by boat you can choose to
the cargo vessels, which take eight hours,
with uncertain schedules and periodicity.
The airport modernization works and the
construction of the port are underway, so
sooner or later the island will be accessible by aircraft with much larger capacity
and vessels with more regular schedules
dedicated to passengers.
The traveler who is a lover of unforgettable journeys shall believe that it is not
worth waiting for these improvements
because the reward that he/she’ll get
will justify the patience with incalculable
gains in delight, pleasure, pleasures of

Suponhamos então que decide não
esperar pela renovação do aeroporto,
pela finalização do porto e desembarca
em Santo António do Príncipe, a mais
pequena cidade do mundo. Saiba que
tem estatuto de cidade, aliás vetusta e
com história pois vai a caminho dos 500
anos de existência. É capital da ilha e
da Região Autónoma do Príncipe, mas
a sua dimensão está na proporção de
uma ilha com apenas 140 quilómetros
quadrados de área e extensões máximas de 16 e 8 quilómetros. Acresce
que uma vasta área da região Sul está
coberta por floresta virgem, pelo que
a população total anda pelas sete mil
almas, 1500 das quais na capital.

Marcelo da Veiga, a Igreja Velha, percorridas as ruas pontuadas por exemplos interessantes de fachadas coloniais, observado o Rio Papagaio, estará o
viajante disponível para partir à descoberta do resto da ilha. Ficou a conhecer o que julga ser o essencial da mais
pequena cidade do mundo, mas não é
bem assim. A hospitalidade dos cerca
de 1500 habitantes da capital da ilha
é um património que cativa a todo o
momento, e de modo surpreendente,

Antes de se fazer à estrada é importante saber que a ilha tem apenas 12
quilómetros de vias alcatroadas e depois
percursos de terra batida, em alguns ca-
sos “mal batida”, no dizer local dos moncós, os originários da ilha, cujas raízes
remotas estão em Angola, Cabo Verde,
Portugal…. Pode pensar em recorrer
a um jipe alugado no Centro Náutico
Bom Bom Island Resort – sujeitandose a ter de esperar vez durante alguns
dias – ou a uma bicicleta, segundo igual
método e no mesmo local, ou então
às próprias pernas, solução garantida,
ideal e de que nunca se arrependerá se
a forma física for aceitável e o calçado
apropriado. Não se esqueça de que as
extensões máximas são, repete-se, 16
e 8 quilómetros. E por falar no Centro
Náutico Bom Bom Island Resort, a verdade é que todos os caminhos dos visitantes do Príncipe ali vão dar por saberem de antemão que irão encontrar que
procuram para desvendar a ilha, desde
hospedagem a apoio logístico e dicas
relevantes. O resort foi construído no
ilhéu Bom Bom, situado na parte Norte
da ilha e acessível através de uma ponte.

Santo António situa-se no interior da
baía com o mesmo nome, bastante
fechada e penetrando de maneira incisiva pelo interior do território. Partindo
da capital para Noroeste o destino
certo é a Roça Sundy, que irá encontrar tal como a deixou o último proprietário, desde a casa do administrador
às residências dos trabalhadores, passando pelo hospital e as instalações dos
capatazes. O tempo e as circunstâncias
fizeram desta roça um museu realista
de uma época que marcou a História
dos territórios que formam hoje a
República Democrática de São Tomé
e Príncipe. Reza ainda a História que
foi também aqui, na Roça Sundy, que
o cientista britânico Arthur Eddington
comprovou a teoria da relatividade de
Einstein. Deslocou-se expressamente
ao Príncipe para observar o eclipse
total do Sol de 29 de Maio de 1919
e fotografar o movimento das estrelas
adjacentes (só possível em situação de
eclipse, devido à penumbra criada).
Com os dados elaborou os cálculos
que lhe permitiram confirmar a teoria
de Einstein, validados pelo próprio.
San Antonio is located within the bay

Roça São Joaquim, outra etapa possível
nesta deslocação em deriva mansa, se
pode abranger uma vista única da ilha,

a curvar-se sob o poder da Natureza

Através do Sul vale a pena conviver

correspondendo igualmente ao apelo
lançado pelas águas para que nelas
penetremos em busca de paisagens
deslumbrantes, entre paredões assombrosos. Reserve-se ainda para uma
outra experiência memorável, de que
já se falou e nunca será demais recordar: a de se banhar à noite nestas águas
tépidas envolvido por uma nuvem fosforescente alumiada por cardumes de
peixes-agulha. Uma experiência inimaginável.
A Praia Banana é uma pérola do Príncipe, uma estrela tornada mediática pela
Bacardi numa constelação de praias
desertas com areias finas, claras e
águas transparentes. Renques cerrados
de palmeiras e coqueiros curvam-se
reverencialmente sobre uma baía cuja
forma faz lembrar o delicioso fruto do
arquipélago, a banana, rico e delicioso
nas suas sete variedades. São tantas as
praias fantásticas do Príncipe, dotadas
de características específicas, todas paradisíacas mas sempre diferentes, especiais, com os pormenores próprios que
as distinguem e apelam à visita. Tem o
viajante muita facilidade em descobri-

à do Macaco, à fabulosa Praia Boi e
muitas outras, encontrá-las-á à medida
que for desbravando o território, o
embaraço será o da escolha, a dificuldade será deixá-las para regressar à
vida quotidiana. Está-se muito bem no
Paraíso e, em boa verdade, nem necessita de conhecer os nomes dados às
praias para com elas se deleitar.
A Praia Grande é mais um santuário de
desova das tartarugas no arquipélago.
Com mil cuidados e a colaboração da
equipa de voluntários que monitoriza e
salvaguarda esses delicados momentos
é possível comungar deles. Inesquecível.
Ao explorar o Sul, onde um jipe terá
maior utilidade do que no resto da ilha,
deve guardar tempo para conhecer a
Roça Terreiro Velho, onde se produz
o cacau usado nos chocolates fabricados por Claudio Corallo, na cidade de
São Tomé, e que estão na lista dos melhores do mundo.
Na Roça Nova Estrela avista-se a forma
curiosa do ilhéu Boné de Jóquei, paraíso para os amantes ou principiantes do
mergulho porque há condições para
todos os graus de experiência – e todas
elas inolvidáveis.
Os amantes de produtos das regiões
que visitam e das recordações também não sairão de mãos a abanar do
Príncipe, terra hospitaleira. O mercado
de Santo António não é grande, mas
quem pretender levar da ilha aquele
souvenir especial certamente saberá
encontrá-lo.
No entanto, fique o viajante certo de
as principais e gratificantes recordações
do Príncipe serão as memórias, as
sensações vividas, as amizades feitas,
as imagens guardadas, em fotos ou na
mente, a entranhada vontade de voltar.

Praia da Banana is a pearl of the Principe, a star publicized by Bacardi in a
constellation of deserted beaches with
fine sand, clear and transparent waters.
Palm and coconut trees in clenched rows

of the archipelago, bananas, rich and

By exploring the South, where a jeep will
have greater utility than in the rest of the
island, one should save time to visit Roça
Terreiro Velho, which produces cocoa
used in the chocolates manufactured by
Claudio Corallo, in the city of São Tomé,
and which are in the world’s top list of
chocolates. In Roça Nova Estrela one
can see the curious shape of the islet
Boné de Jóquei, a paradise for lovers or
beginners of diving because there are
conditions for all levels of experience –
being and all of them unforgettable.
The lovers of the products of the visited
regions and of souvenirs shall not leave
the hospitable island of Principe emptyhanded. The Santo Antonio market is not
big, but who is willing to take a special
souvenir from the island will find it.
Nevertheless, the traveler shall be certain that the major and rewarding memorabilia of Principe are the memories, the
sensations felt, the friendships made, the
images kept in the photos or in mind, and
the ingrained desire to return.

SCUBA DIVING
No Príncipe são absolutamente fora
de série as possibilidades de mergulho. Focinho do Cão, Boné de Jóquei,
Mosteiros, Galé e Ilhéu das Tinhosas
são locais a visitar. Os mergulhos, embora profundos, a 30 ou 40 metros,
não são exclusivos dos adeptos mais
experientes, excepto no lhéu das
Tinhosas, recomendado só para nível
avançado. Local de soberbas paredes

verticais e rochas volumosas por onde
se passeiam os grandes peixes… O
mergulho na Galé é conhecido como
um dos mais bonitos desta ilha. Mas
o dos Mosteiros também não lhe fica
atrás em beleza; aqui, as pequenas
grutas contribuem para o carácter multifacetado pelo qual este mergulho é
conhecido. À volta do Príncipe, além
dos habituais peixes destas águas e
dos tubarões gata, corvinas, corcovados, tartarugas, barracudas, wahoos,
raias e moreias de grandes dimensões,
podemos ser surpreendidos pelos tubarões martelo, sobretudo nas Tinhosas e Boné de Jóquei.
Diving opportunities are absolutely outstanding in Principe. Focinho do Cão,
Boné de Jóquei, Mosteiros, Galé and Ilhéu
das Tinhosas are places worth visiting. Diving, although as deep as 30 or 40 meters,
is not exclusive of the most experienced
fans, except in lhéu das Tinhosas that is
only recommended for experienced scuba
divers. It’s home to superb vertical walls
and massive rocks where the big fish wander about ... Diving in Galé is known as
one of the most beautiful experiences of
the island, Nevertheless, diving in Mosteiros is not second to Galé in beauty; here,
the small caves contribute to the multifaceted nature by which this particular diving is known. Besides the usual fish found
in the waters of Principe, including cat
sharks, meagre, corcovados, turtles, barracudas, Wahoo, rays and very large moray, one can be surprised by hammerhead
sharks, especially in the islets of Tinhosas
and Boné de Jóquei.
