INTRO
Paul wrote the song Give Ireland Back To The
Irish on February 1st 1972, just two days following the events of ‘Bloody Sunday’ took place in
the Northern Irish city of Derby. The track was
recorded at the beginning of February 1972 by
the then newly-formed Wings, which at this time
comprised the band members Paul and Linda,
Denny Laine, Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell.
The original plan had been to release a single
from the Wings Wild Life album in January 1972.
This was to have been Love Is Strange with I Am
Your Singer on the B-side. Even though a catalogue number was reserved for the release (Apple
R5932), in the end it was cancelled without explanation, and the single never saw the light of day.
The only evidence that there were any plans at
all to release this single is the small number of
highly limited, hand-picked white-label test pressings, which are without doubt among the ultimate
items for every McCartney collector.

Der Song Give Ireland Back To The Irish wurde
von Paul am 1. Februar 1972, also nur zwei Tage
nach dem “Bloody Sunday” in der nordirischen
Stadt Derby geschrieben. Aufgenommen wurde
der Titel Anfang Februar 1972 mit den neu formierten Wings, bestehend aus Paul und Linda,
Denny Laine, Henry McCullough und Denny Seiwell.
Ursprünglich war bereits für den Januar 1972
eine Single-Auskopplung des „Wings Wild Life”Albums geplant. Man hatte sich hierbei für die
Songs Love Is Strange auf der A-Seite und I Am
Your Singer auf der B-Seite entschieden. Es gab
sogar schon eine Katalognummer (Apple R5932),
die Single wurde dann jedoch nie veröffentlicht.
Als einziger Beweis für die Planungen gibt es nur
sehr wenige, handverlesene Weißlabel-Testpressungen. Für jeden McCartney-Sammler würde
ein Exemplar dieser Testpressung mit Sicherheit
die Krönung der eigenen Sammlung darstellen.
Consequently, Give Ireland Back To The Irish
ended up being the irst ever Wings single
release. It came out at the end of February 1972
but was immediately banned by the BBC as well
as by other radio and TV stations, on the grounds
of its political content. However, McCartney was
quick to exploit the situation and made good use
of it in the single’s advertising (see the opening
page of this chapter).
Somit wurde Give Ireland Back To The Irish
schließlich die erste „Wings”-Single. Veröffentlicht
wurde sie bereits Ende Februar 1972 und direkt
nach dem Erscheinen von der BBC und weiteren Radio- und TV-Sendern aufgrund der politischen Aussage des Songs aus dem Programm
verbannt. Dies machte sich McCartney wiederum
zu eigen und warb sogar mit dem Fakt, dass die
Single verboten worden war (siehe auch die Titelseite dieses Kapitels).
The single’s level of success in Britain was no
more than moderate, however, where it only
made number 16 in the charts. In Ireland, on
the other hand, it was Wings’ irst number 1 hit.
Nevertheless, as is the case with virtually all Irish
pressings, it is very dificult to ind a copy of the
single from this country.
In England war die Single mit einem Platz 16 in
den Charts nur halbwegs erfolgreich, in Irland
konnten die Wings jedoch Ihren ersten Nr. 1-Hit
verbuchen. Ungeachtet dieser Tatsache ist es
trotzdem sehr schwierig, wie bei fast allen irischen Pressungen, ein Exemplar dieser Single in
die Finger zu bekommen.
Despite the relatively localised relevance of the
single’s political content, it was released in almost
every European country, as well as in many other
countries worldwide, where it enjoyed at least
moderate success.
Trotz des eigentlich relativ lokal begrenzten politischen Inhalts wurde die Single in fast allen europäischen Ländern, wie auch in vielen weiteren
Ländern weltweit, zumindest mit akzeptablem
Erfolg veröffentlicht.

Issue with the same wording as [19721/01e] & [1972-1/01f], but with different
centre style, different green tone for the
wording and also different matrix number.
Labels are not surrounded by a band of
radial grooves. This should be a second
reissue of this single and it is much harder
to ind than the previous shown pressings.
The distinctive solid centre suggests that
it is likely to be a CBS Records contract
pressing. The release date was probably
between 1984 and 1988.
Gleiche Pressung wie [1972-1/01e] &
[1972-1/01f], jedoch mit anderer Vinylform
um das Mittelloch, anderem Grünton,
anderer Matrixnummer, sowie ohne
Querrillen rund um die Label. Es sollte sich
hierbei um eine zweite Wiederveröffentlichung dieser Single handeln, die wesentlich schwerer zu inden ist als die zuvor
gezeigten Pressungen. Aufgrund der Vinylform, dürfte es sich bei dieser Single um
eine Vertragspressung von CBS Records
handeln. Das Veröffentlichungsdatum lag
vermutlich zwischen 1984 und 1988.

This is the original sheet music as published in the UK by ‘Northern Songs LTD./Music
Sales LTD.’. It comprises one gatefold page with a big green shamrock on front, plus a
additional single page. The page size is 28.2 x 21.6 cm. It originally sold for 20 British
pence. This sheet music is by far the hardest to ind of all UK issues.

Hierbei handelt es sich um die ofizielle Noten-Veröffentlichung aus England, die bei
“Northern Songs LTD./Music Sales LTD.” erschienen ist. Sie umfasst eine Klappseite und

Very hard to ind pressing from
Turkey. This is one of the rarest
McCartney/Wings singles of all
from Turkey, even if it comes in
the standard black die-cut Apple
sleeve. The price is given on the
label as 12,50 lira, which had at the
time a worth of approximately one
US dollar. The wording ‘Perkende
Fiati‘ stands for ‘retail price‘.
Sehr schwer zu indende Pressung
aus der Türkei. Hierbei handelt
es sich um eine der seltensten
McCartney/Wings Singles aus
der Türkei, jedoch im üblichen
schwarzen Apple Lochcover. Der
aufgedruckte Preis auf dem Label
beträgt 12,50 Lira, was zur damaligen Zeit einem Wert von ca. einem
US Dollar entsprach. Der Aufdruck
“Perkende Fiati” bedeutet sinngemäß “Einzelhandelspreis”.
