BIOGRAFIA
Clarinetista, maestro e compositor, Luís Carvalho distingue-se como um dos mais versáteis músicos portugueses
da sua geração. Apresentou-se em recitais e concertos um pouco por todo o mundo, muitas vezes estreando as
suas próprias obras e de outros compositores contemporâneos portugueses e estrangeiros, várias das quais
tendo-lhe sido expressamente dedicadas.
Estudou clarinete e composição no Porto (com António Saiote e Fernando Lapa, respetivamente), onde lhe foi
atribuído o «Prémio para o melhor aluno do curso» (1994), e direção de orquestra em Milão, S. Petersburgo e
Madrid, com Jorma Panula e Jesus López-Cóbos. Especializou-se ainda em direção de música contemporânea com
Arturo Tamayo, e frequentou workshops e palestras com compositores de renome como Luis de Pablo (Espanha)
e Magnus Lindberg (Finlândia). Galardoado em diversos concursos, destacam-se os prémios obtidos no «Concurso
de Interpretação do Estoril» (2001) e no «4º Concurso Internacional de Composição da Póvoa de Varzim», pela
sua obra orquestral Metamorphoses… hommage à M. C. Escher (2009). Foi ainda vencedor da «Audição para Jovens
Maestros» organizada pela Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (2010), e, mais recentemente (2012), nomeado
para o Prémio Autores da SPA (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) pela sua obra orquestral Nise Lacrimosa. Já em
2013 foi distinguido pelo jornal nortenho «Audiência» com o Troféu Prestígio, pela sua carreira dedicada à música.
Dirige as mais importantes orquestras nacionais, como a Sinfónica Portuguesa (Lisboa), a Nacional do Porto, a
Metropolitana de Lisboa, a Orquestra do Algarve, a Filarmonia das Beiras (Aveiro), a Orquestra Clássica da
Madeira, a Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa (Lisboa), a Sinfónica da Póvoa de Varzim, a Sinfónica da Universidade
de Aveiro, a Sinfónica da ESART (Castelo Branco), a Sinfónica da EPMVC (Viana do Castelo) ou a Orquestra Clássica
de Espinho, e no estrangeiro aparece com várias orquestras de Rússia, Itália, Hungria, Espanha e Finlândia. É
fundador e diretor artístico/musical da Camerata Nov’Arte (Porto), com a qual tem desenvolvido projetos artísticos
inovadores, incluindo uma muito bem-sucedida digressão ao Brasil (2013), e cruzamentos disciplinares com a área
do teatro. Acompanhou solistas da craveira de Pedro Burmester e João Bettencourt da Câmara (piano), Radovan
Vlatkovic e Paulo Guerreiro (trompa), Alain Damiens, Justo Sanz, Josep Fuster e Arno Piters (clarinete), Pedro
Carneiro (percussão), Henrique Portovedo (saxofone), Rui Lopes (fagote), José Pereira e Tamila Kharambura
(violino), Jutta Puchhammer-Sédillot e Pedro Meireles (viola), Marco Pereira (violoncelo) ou Elsa Saque, Carlos
Guilherme, Mário Alves, Isabel Alcobia, Raquel Camarinha, Dora Rodrigues, Sara Braga Simões, Ana Paula Russo,
Maria Luísa de Freitas e Cristiana Oliveira (canto).
O repertório que aborda é vasto e ecléctico, estendendo-se do barroco à atualidade, e inclui várias primeiras
audições absolutas. No campo da música de cena a sua experiência inclui a estreia da ópera Auto da Fundação de
Coimbra (Coimbra-2004), de Manuel de Faria, e ainda apresentações com La voix humaine (Poulenc), Il secreto de
Susanna (Wolf-Ferrari), Pierrot Lunaire (Schoenberg) e o conto musical encenado Como se faz cor-de-laranja, de
Pedro Faria Gomes.
Igualmente reconhecido como compositor, obras suas têm sido apresentadas em Portugal, Espanha, França,
Alemanha, Holanda, Venezuela e Brasil, por intérpretes e agrupamentos nacionais e estrangeiros. Do seu catálogo,
que é maioritariamente editado pela AvA-editions, destacam-se Nise Lacrimosa (encomenda do Cistermúsica2011/Alcobaça) e Metamorphoses… hommage à M. C. Escher, ambas para orquestra; Fantastic Variations e
Chiaroscuro, ambas para banda sinfónica (encomendas da Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa), Sax-suite para quarteto
de saxofones (em CD pela NUMÉRICA) e Hornphony para quarteto de trompas (em CD pela AFINAUDIO), bem
como Hornpipe (trompa solo) e Alboque (clarinete solo) e Chirimia (oboé ou saxofone-soprano solo). No âmbito da
sua investigação para doutoramento concebeu uma «reinvenção dos esboços para grande ensemble» baseada
nos rascunhos deixados por Gustav Mahler para a Sinfonia nº10, em fá# maior. Esta nova versão foi estreada pelo
próprio dirigindo a Camerata Nov’Arte (Junho/2014).

BIOGRAPHY
Portuguese clarinetist, conductor and composer, Luís Carvalho is one of the most versatile musicians of his
generation. Having performed numerous concerts and recitals around the World, often premieres his own pieces
and others by leading Portuguese and foreign contemporary composers, some of which have been specifically
dedicated to him.
Mr. Carvalho studied clarinet and composition in Porto (with Antonio Saiote and Fernando Lapa, respectively),
where he was awarded the «Prize for the best student of the year» (1994), and orchestra conducting in Milan, S.
Petersburg and Madrid, with Jorma Panula and Jesus López-Cóbos. He also studied contemporary music conducting
with Arturo Tamayo, and attended workshops and lectures by renowned composers such as Luis de Pablo (Spain)
and Magnus Lindberg (Finland). A prizewinner at the «4th International Póvoa de Varzim Composition Competition»
(2009) for his orchestral work Metamorphoses... hommage à M. C. Escher, more recently (2012) Mr. Carvalho has
also been nominated for the Authors Prize of the Portuguese Authors Society (SPA), for another of his orchestral
works – Nise Lacrimosa. In 2013 «Audiência» regional newspaper awards him the Prestige Trophy for his career
devoted to music.
Mr. Carvalho appears regularly with most of the Portuguese leading orchestras, namely the Portuguese Symphony
Orchestra, the Porto National Orchestra, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Algarve Orchestra, the Madeira
Classical Orchestra, the Beiras Philharmonic, the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, the Póvoa de Varzim Symphony
Orchestra, the Aveiro University Symphony Orchestra, the ESART Symphony Orchestra, the EPMVC Symphony
Orchestra, the Espinho Classical Orchestra, and abroad appears with orchestras in Russia, Hungary, Italy, Spain,
and Finland. He is founder and artistic/music director of Camerata Nov’Arte (Porto), a group that proposes
alternative programs, including a well-received tour to Brazil (2013). Mr. Carvalho appears moreover alongside
such renowned soloists as Radovan Vlatkovic (horn), Pedro Burmester (piano), Alain Damiens, Justo Sanz, Josep
Fuster and Arno Piters (clarinet), Pedro Carneiro (percussion), Henrique Portovedo (saxofone), Rui Lopes
(bassoon), José Pereira and Tamila Kharambura (violin), Marco Pereira (cello), and Elsa Saque, Carlos Guilherme,
Mário Alves, Isabel Alcobia, Raquel Camarinha, Dora Rodrigues, Sara Braga Simões and Ana Paula Russo (voice),
having furthermore participated at the international festivals of Espinho, Aveiro, Póvoa de Varzim, Estoril, CCB
Music Days (Lisbon) and RDP/Antena 2 Young Musicians Festival.
Mr. Carvalho’s repertoire is vast and eclectic, spanning from the baroque to modernity, and includes several
premieres. On the scenic/operatic field his experience includes the premiere of Portuguese opera Tale of the
Foundation of the City of Coimbra, by Manuel de Faria, La voix humaine by Poulenc, Il secreto de Susanna by WolfFerrari, Pierrot Lunaire by Schoenberg and How to make orange color by Portuguese composer Pedro Faria Gomes.
Also a recognized composer, Mr. Carvalho’s works have been receiving performances in Portugal, Spain, France,
Holland, Venezuela and Brazil. Mainly published by AvA-musical editions, his catalogue includes Metamorphoses...
hommage to M. C. Escher and Nise Lacrimosa (commissioned by Alcobaça International Music Festival-2011), both
for orchestra, Fantastic Variations and Chiaroscuro, both for symphonic band (commissioned by the Portuguese
Symphony Band – on CD by label AFINAUDIO), Dodekathlon for solo tuba and low brass ensemble (commissioned
by renowned tubist Sérgio Carolino and The Wild Bones Gang), Sax-suite for saxophone quartet (on CD by label
NUMÉRICA), Hornphony for horn quartet (on CD by label AFINAUDIO) as well as Hornpipe (solo horn), Chirimia (solo
oboe) and Alboque (solo clarinet). As a result of his doctorate investigation Mr. Carvalho conceived a new
«reinvention of the draft for large ensemble» for Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.10 in F# major, which he himself
premiered, alongside Camerata Nov’Arte in June/2014.
A faculty teacher at the Aveiro University (Portugal), Mr. Carvalho is featured in nearly two dozen CD’s, either as a
clarinetist, conductor or composer, and in labels such as NUMÉRICA, CASA DA MÚSICA, AFINAUDIO and PUBLICART.
