The kick-off event, which was meant to be the beginning of a comprehensive network among African countries concerning water, proved itself to be a success. We therefore decided to continue. In our second Round Table, on the topic of “Water Resource Management in Africa”, we would like to focus on a precise issue, which is applicable to most African countries. The prudent management of water is generally recognized as a key to reversing the downward spiral in human welfare which results from a combination of rapid population growth, stagnating per capita food production and accelerating environmental degradation across the African continent. Africa has over 50 significant water basins spanning nearly all countries. For 14 of these, practically their entire national territories fall within shared river basins. There are also large inland water bodies such as lake Victoria in Kenya. The East-African country has accomplished great successes in the area of water resource management in recent years. The Water Sector Reform, which was initiated in the Water Act 2002 resulted in a variety of water programs throughout the whole country. Mr. Frank Heinrich (MP) together with the Kenyan Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Ken Osinde, would like to invite you to be part of the continuation of the series of round tables tackling water issues. The second round table will focus on topics like the correlation between water management and population growth as well as food security. Successfully applied water resource management strategies, in particularly Kenya’s lessons learned, will be shared by experts from the field of development cooperation and water management. It would be an honour and a pleasure to have you in attendance. Kind regards, Frank Heinrich Member of the German Bundestag in cooperation with DSW - German Foundation of World Population H.E.
