Von dem deutschen Komponisten Franz Liszt (1811–1886)
wird erzählt, er habe 1842 sein Orchester in Weimar mit folgenden Worten

Bekannt für seine Fähigkeit, mit der Musik Farben zu empfinden, war außerdem Alexander Skrjabin (1872–1915). Die Symphonie
„Promethée – Le Poème du Feu“ des russischen Komponisten hat eine

separate Stimme für ein speziell zu konstruierendes Farbenklavier
(„clavier à lumières“). Skrjabins Ziel war es, ein Gesamtkunstwerk zu
erschaffen. Er nutzte dabei seine besondere Gabe der Synästhesie.
Die Synästhesie bezeichnet die Kopplung in der Wahrnehmung
von zwei oder mehreren unterschiedlichen Sinneseindrücken, wie zum Beispiel die Verknüpfung von Gehör- und Sehsinn oder Geruchs- und Tastsinn
– oder auch die Verknüpfung von Sinnesreiz und Gefühl.
Der bekannte Maler Kandinsky ging von der Synästhesie
aus und ordnete den Farben unter anderem verschiedene andere Sinneseindrücke wie „weich, aromatisch“ (blau) oder „scharf, stechend“ (gelb)
zu. Parallel dazu diente ihm die Musik als Vorlage für seine abstrakten
Darstellungen, in denen Gefühle durch Noten ausgedrückt werden. Die
Grundidee dabei ist das Hören von Farben und das Sehen von Klängen mit
den Zielen von Farbharmonie und dem Berühren der menschlichen Seele.
Die Kunstwerke von SOUND OF ART entstehen unter dem
schöpferischen Einfluss der Synästhesie mit emotionalem Schwerpunkt.
Die Musik erzeugt eine emotionale Spannung, die sich in besonderen
Empfindungen von Farben, Linien, Formen und einer alles überlagernden
Dynamik entlädt. Jedes Klangbild stellt einen unverwechselbaren emotionalen Abdruck dar.

It is said of the german composer Franz Liszt that in 1842 he
instructed his orchestra in Weimar with the following words: “This tone is

Also popular for his ability to perceive music with colours
was Alexander Skrjabin (1872–1915). The symphony „Promethée – Le

was Skrjabins goal to create a „synthesis of art“. Therefore he used his gift
of synaesthesia.
Synaesthesia describes the linking in percipience of two or
more different sensory inputs, such as the combination of the sense of
hearing with seeing or the sense of smell with the sense of touch – or
also the combination of a sensory stimulus with emotions.
The well known artist Kandinsky started out from synaesthesia and (among other things) associated colours to different sensory
stimuli such as „soft, aromatic“ (blue) or „sharp, stabbing“ (yellow). He
worked abstractly, music acted as inspiring example, whereas it is possible
to express feelings through notes. He spoke of colour-tunes and compared
the harmony of colour with the harmony of tunes. One goal of his art was
to reach colour-harmony and to touch the human soul.
The work of SOUND OF ART originates under the productive
influence of synaesthesia with an emotional emphasis. Music generates
an emotional tension, which erupts in particular sensations of colour,
lines, forms and superimposing dynamics. Every sound image results in a
distinctive emotional imprint.

S O U N D O F A R T
Es war einmal eine Zeit der Düsterkeit. Mein Glück lag in
Scherben. Kein Flehen und kein Bitten und kein Zauber dieser Welt konnten
mich retten. Das Glück schien verloren. Ich war allein in einer dunklen
Zeit mit Kummer und Sorgen, Sehnsucht und Einsamkeit, Reue, Wut und
Trauer.
In dieser Zeit traf mich die Musik, mit ihren tanzenden Tönen
und fordernden Wogen. Wir lernten uns kennen, näherten uns. Bald begleitete mich Musik auf Schritt und Tritt, hinunter in die Tiefen von Kellern des
Schmerzes und hinauf in die Höhen des Glücks. Es war der Anfang, ich war
nicht mehr allein.
Bald darauf gesellte sich die Aquarell-Malerei dazu, eine
flüchtige Bekanntschaft, eine Spielerei. Sie konnte nicht bleiben, zu ruhig
war ihr Gemüt. Sie bewegte sich nur langsam zur Musik, die für sich allein
spielte. Auch ich fand keine Verbindung.

um ihre
eigenen Töne
Eines Tages schlenderte ich in einer schmalen und verwinkelten Gasse. Das Sonnenlicht spiegelte sich vor mir in einem Fenster. Ich
trat näher und es traf mich wie eine neue Liebe – schnell und ungestüm,
mitreißend und so vielversprechend. Sie war es, die Acryl-Malerei.
Sie folgte mir und blieb, verschmolz mit der Musik. SOUND
OF ART war geboren. Jede mögliche Gelegenheit, ein Treffen mit der Liebe.
Zu Dritt bewegten wir uns in Ekstase, immer und immer wieder, bis uns
die Kraft verließ. Die Entfesselung der Emotionen: Schwarz und weiß,
voll Farbe und laut, heftig sich windend oder leise in Liebe flüsternd und
schließlich: Erleichterung. Alle Emotionen gespendet, dem Augenblick –
und festgehalten auf der Leinwand.

Ich sehe die Welt in ihrer pastellzarten Figur. Die Musik
wirbelt vor Freude um ihre eigenen Töne. Ich bin gerettet, das Leben, ein
neues Gefühl.
Das ist es, was Malerei für mich bedeutet: Leben und immer
wieder Leben, Gefühl und Ausdruck, Licht und Farbe, Dynamik, Bewegung
und Kraft. Bilder entstehen im Strudel der Emotionen, ohne sie entsteht
nichts. Die Emotionen können wachsen, getragen von der Musik und entladen sich in ihrem Bann. Schweigt die Musik, kann kein Bild entstehen.
Musik sehen, das ist SOUND OF ART. Ich lade Sie ein, diese
Impressionen mit mir zu teilen.

Once upon a time gloom and dismay beheld the world. My
fortune was shattered to pieces. No pleading and imploring, no magic in
the world could make it whole. It seemed lost and I was alone in a time of
darkness, a time of pain and sorrow, longing and loneliness, regret and
fury and grief.
It was at this time that I met music, with its whirling tunes
and surging waves. We grew close and music accompanied me where ever
I went. Down to the dungeons of pain and up again to the heights of happiness. It was the beginning, I was alone no more.
Eventually watercolour painting joined us, a short acquaintance, a dalliance. She could not stay, too smooth was her temper. Her
movements were slow and music played without her. And I offered no
alliance.

One day, as I roamed a narrow and crooked alley, the suns
reflection caught in a window. I drew closer and encountered a new love,
quick and dashing, stirring and so promising. Her name: Acryl on canvas.
She followed me and stayed, blending together with the
music. SOUND OF ART was born. Every possible chance was a meeting with
love. The three of us moved together in ecstasy, over and over again, until
all strength had left us. The uprooting of emotions: black and white, full of
colour and loud, moving fiercely or quietly in loving whispers and finally:
relief. All emotions spent in the moment – and preserved on canvas.

I see the world in her delicate pastel-coloured figure. And
music swirls happily around its own tunes. I am rescued, life a new feeling.
This is what painting means to me: Life and life again – light
and colour, dynamics, movement and strength. Paintings originate and
arise from the whirlpool of emotions. Without them nothing can emerge.
The emotions will grow on the soil of music and discharge in its ban. If
music remains silent, no painting can be.
Seeing music is what SOUND OF ART is about. I would be
happy to share these impressions with you.

Susan Schmidt
wird 1961 in Toronto, Kanada, in eine kreative Erfinderfamilie
geboren. Bereits in ihrer frühen Kindheit erlebt sie Klänge
und Musik mit besonderer Sensibilität. Sie entdeckt früh die
Malerei als Ausdruck von Emotionen.
Bis zu ihrer Leidenschaft, Musik erstmals als Farben- und
Formenspiel in einen künstlerischen Rahmen zu stellen,
schlägt sie zuerst eine kaufmännische Laufbahn ein, der ein
Studium der Psychologie, Statistik und Rechtswissenschaften (M. A.) sowie eine Promotion in Angewandter Psychologie
folgen. Sie engagiert sich in der beruflichen Rehabilitation
seelisch behinderter Menschen und in der tiergestützten
Intervention.
Über die Zeit entstehen Bilder, die im Strudel von Emotionen
ausgelöst werden. Die Sinne verschmelzen, die emotionale
Synästhesie wird sichtbar.
Auf ihrem Weg des künstlerischen Schaffens lässt sich Susan
durch verschiedenste Musikrichtungen inspirieren. Indem
sie die Musik als visuelles Erlebnis darstellt, zieht sie immer
mehr Betrachter in den Bann ihrer Bilder.

A R T I S T
Susan Schmidt
is born into a creative inventor family in 1961 in Toronto,
Canada. Since her early childhood she experiences tunes and
music with special sensibility. She discovers the art of painting as a method of expressing emotions very early.
Until fully turning to her passion of moulding music into
scenes of colour and patterns as a scope of art, she first
takes up an occupation within industrial business which is
followed by university studies of social sciences (psychology)
statistics and law (M. A.) and doctorial studies in applied

psychology (PhD). Her professional domain and dedication
lie in the area of occupational rehabilitation for
persons with psychological disabilities and in the
area of animal assisted intervention.
Over time paintings originate and arise from the
whirlpool of emotions, initiated by music. Senses
meld into one another, emotional synestethics
comes through.
On her way of creating art Susan is inspired by most
different styles of music. By painting music as a visual experience more and more beholders are bound
by the spell of her paintings.
