Fakultät für Physik Prof. Milena Grifoni, Prof. Jascha Repp WS 2014/15 Übungen zu Integrierter Kurs II - Festkörper und Statistische Physik Blatt 11 (10.12.2014) Übungsleiter: Prof. Jascha Repp (1.1.24, phone 4201) Dr. Magdalena Margańska-Lyżniak (3.1.22, phone 2042) (experiment) (theory) Part I: Theory 1. Occupation number representation Let us consider a fermionic system with two single particle states |αi and |βi that span the (two-dimensional) one-particle Hilbert space. (a) What is the dimension of the two-particle Hilbert space? What is the dimension of the Fock space? Write down the basis of the Fock space explicitly as Slater determinants of the wave functions φα (r), φβ (r) and in the occupation number representation. (2 Points) (b) Calculate, in the Fock basis, the matrix representation of the creation and annihilation operators ĉµ , ĉ†µ (µ = α, β) and also of the occupation operators n̂i = ĉ†µ ĉµ . (2 Points) (c) Using explicitly the matrix multiplication of the matrices calculated in (b), calculate the anticommutator relations h i h i [ĉµ , ĉν ]+ = ĉ†µ , ĉ†ν = 0; ĉµ , ĉ†ν = δij + + (2 Points) 2. A system of interacting fermions Consider a Hamiltonian operator Ĥ = T̂ + V̂ , where T̂ is a one-body operator and V̂ a two-body one. Remember that in second quantization one and two body operators are respectively written as T̂ = X λ,µ ĉ†λ hλ| t̂ |µiĉµ , V̂ = 1 X † † ĉλ ĉµ hλ|hµ| v̂ |λ0 i|µ0 i ĉµ0 ĉλ0 , 2 0 0 λµλ µ where {|λi} represents a generic single particle basis and ĉ†λ the corresponding creation operator. For the (first quantization) matrix element in the two body operator we adopt the convention Z 0 0 hλ|hµ| v̂ |λ i|µ i ≡ dr1 dr2 φ∗λ (r1 )φ∗µ (r2 ) v(r1 , r2 ) φλ0 (r1 )φµ0 (r2 ). With respect to the single particle basis {|αi, |βi} the (first quantization) matrix elements are: hα|t̂|αi = hβ|t̂|βi = ; hα|t̂|βi = hβ|t̂|αi = t hα|hβ| v̂ |αi|βi = U ; hα|hβ| v̂ |βi|αi = J. The other two-body matrix elements follow using the definitions above. (a) Write the operator Ĥ in second quantization and in the matrix representation (starting from the single particle basis introduced). Calculate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for Ĥ. (2 Points) (b) Again, write Ĥ in the second quantization, but this time as a single particle basis use the eigenvectors of T̂ . What is the connection between these creation and annihilation operators and those considered in part (a) and in 11.1? Is this a unitary transformation? (2 Points) Part II: Experiment 1.
