In j e d e m J a h r kommen u n g e f ä h r f ü n f h u n d e r t
junge Menschen aus a l l e n E r d t e i l e n i n d i e L e i p z i g e r Lumumbastraße, um am dort gelegenen Herd e r - I n s t i t u t d i e d e u t s c h e Sprache zu e r l e r n e n .
Nur z e h n Monate b l e i b t i h n e n d a z u Z e i t , d a n a c h
beginnen s i e e i n Studium an den u n t e r s c h i e d l i c h s t e n U n i v e r s i t ä t e n und Hochschulen der DDR.
Bis
zum gegenwärtigen Z e i t p u n k t s i n d auf d i e s e Weise
w e i t über 20000 Studenten aus 132 Ländern ausgeb i l d e t worden.
Begonnen h a t t e d i e s b e r e i t s im J a h r e 1951
m i t e i n e r k l e i n e n D e l e g a t i o n aus N i g e r i a , d i e
der damaligen A r b e i t e r - und B a u e r n f a k u l t ä t (ABF)

a n g e g l i e d e r t wurde. Fünf Jahre s p ä t e r wurde das
I n s t i t u t f ü r Ausländerstudium an der K a r l - M a r x U n i v e r s i t ä t L e i p z i g gegründet, welches im Jahre
1961 den Namen Johann G o t t f r i e d Herders e r h i e l t .
In der e r s t e n Phase des S p r a c h u n t e r r i c h t e s ,
der z w ö l f U n t e r r i c h t s w o c h e n dauernden Grunds t u f e , w i r d den Studenten e i n a l l g e m e i n s p r a c h l i c h e r W o r t s c h a t z von e t w a 2000 W ö r t e r n und
Wendungen v e r m i t t e l t , w o b e i d i e z u k ü n f t i g e n
Studenten n a t u r w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e r , technischer
und l a n d w i r t s c h a f t l i c h e r F a c h r i c h t u n g e n i n d i e
F a c h s p r a c h e n M a t h e m a t i k und Chemie e i n g e f ü h r t
w e r d e n . Nach e i n e r S p r a c h k u n d i g e n p r ü f u n g
s c h l i e ß e n s i c h z w a n z i g Wochen der O b e r s t u f e an,
i n der w e i t e r e 4500 Wörter und Wendungen e r l e r n t
w e r d e n , w o b e i d e r S c h w e r p u n k t b e r e i t s a u f den
j e w e i l i g e n Fachsprachen l i e g t .
Selbsverstandl i c h e r h a l t e n d i e Studenten landeskundliche
K e n n t n i s s e , w i r d i h r B i l d u n g s n i v e a u an d i e Anforderungen i n ihren k ü n f t i g e n U n i v e r s i t ä t e n
a n g e g l i c h e n und b e s o n d e r s auch w e r d e n i h n e n
v i e l e M ö g l i c h k e i t e n der F r e i z e i t g e s t a l t u n g
gebaten.
Wenn s i c h an d i e s e m A u s b i l d u n g s p r i n z i p im
Laufe der Z e i t auch n i c h t s W e s e n t l i c h e s v e r ä n d e r t h a t , so haben s i c h jedoch d i e Methoden und
der I n h a l t g e w a n d e l t .
Vor mehr a l s d r e i ß i g
J a h r e n e x i s t i e r t e n j a kaum V o r s t e l l u n g e n von
einem F a c h g e b i e t Deutsch a l s Fremdsprache!
Die
z a h l r e i c h e n L e h r b ü c h e r und - m a t e r i a l i e n sowie
die wissenschaftlichen A r b e i t e n zur Fundierung
d i e s e s neuen Zweiges der G e r m a n i s t i k zeugen von
e i n e r raschen E n t w i c k l u n g . Dementsprechend w e i t e t e s i c h das Aufgabengebiet am H e r d e r - I n s t i t u t
aus. D i e S t u d i e n v o r b e r e i t u n g f ü r d i e a u s l ä n d i s c h e n Studenten p r ä g t zwar auch heute noch das
P r o f i l des I n s t i t u t s e n t s c h e i d e n d , von ä h n l i c h e r
B e d e u t u n g j e d o c h i s t d i e L e i t f u n k t i o n des H e r d e r - I n s t i t u t s f ü r d i e w e i t e r e n d r e i z e h n i n der
DDR beheimateten I n s t i t u t i o n e n , an denen A u s l ä n der m i t der deutschen Sprache v e r t r a u t gemacht
werden. Kaum g e r i n g e r a l s d i e j ä h r l i c h e Student e n z a h l i s t d i e Z a h l d e r T e i l n e h m e r an den I n t e r n a t i o n a l e n H o c h s c h u l f e r i e n k u r s e n und an W e i -

t e r b i l d u n g s v e r a n s t a l t u n g e n f ü r G e r m a n i s t e n und
D e u t s c h l e h r e r , d i e am H e r d e r - I n s t i t u t n e b e n
e i n e r s p r a c h l i c h e n Vervollkommnung mit den neus t e n E r k e n n t n i s s e n i n den g e r m a n i s t i s c h e n D i s z i p l i n e n s o w i e der Methodik des Fremdsprachenu n t e r r i c h t s und der Landeskunde v e r t r a u t gemacht
werden.
