Künstler Hannes Schmid ist
seinem Motto bis heute treu geblieben.
“Keep moving forward and you’ll
always find something new.”
66-year-old Swiss photographer and
artist Hannes Schmid has
stayed true to his motto to this day.

I
m Alter von 23 Jahren wanderte Hannes Schmid gemeinsam mit ein paar Freunden nach Südafrika aus.
Um seine Eindrücke mit seinen Liebsten zu Hause teilen zu können, kaufte er sich in Kapstadt eine Billigkamera, ohne auch nur zu ahnen, was diese Errungenschaft
auslösen würde.
Heute bezeichnet Schmid seine Zeit in Südafrika als
«Lernzeit». Südafrika war ein erster Stopp auf Schmids
vielfältiger Reise: Ob er nun mit Kannibalen in PapuaNeuguinea lebte, Kultbands wie Pink Floyd und Queen
oder Formel-1-Legenden fotografierte, mit dem «Marlboro Man» einen amerikanischen Mythos mitprägte oder
Models für Magazine wie «Elle», «Marie-Claire» und
«Vogue» steile Felswände rauf- und runterklettern liess:
Schmid interessierte sich stets für die Konzepte und die
Arbeitsprozesse, weniger für die Resultate. In den 70erJahren erhielt er die Gelegenheit, Status Quo zu fotografieren. Die Bilder der Band wurden über Nacht bekannt.
Und mit ihnen auch Hannes Schmid. Aus einer ursprünglichen Leidenschaft wurde eine Berufung.

annes Schmid was just 23 when he emigrated to
South Africa with a group of friends. To share his
impressions of the place with his loved ones back
home in his native Switzerland, he bought himself a cheap
camera in Cape Town on arrival. Little did he know where
that purchase would lead. And he still fondly refers to his
time in South Africa as his “apprentice years”.
South Africa proved just the first stop on a long and varied journey. And wherever it has taken him – to cannibals in
Papua New Guinea, cult bands such as Pink Floyd, Queen
and more, motor-racing legends, the mythical “Marlboro
Man”, models having a go at alpine climbing in the North
Face of the Eiger for titles such as “Elle”, “Marie-Claire” or
“Vogue” – Hannes Schmid has always shown a keener interest in the concepts and the work processes than in the
finished product.
In the 1970s Schmid had the opportunity to photograph
Status Quo. The images became an overnight sensation, and
so did Hannes Schmid. And what had previously been his
passion became his profession.

Hannes Schmid
Hannes Schmid, 1946 in
Zürich geboren, ist
­insbesondere für den
«Marlboro Man» bekannt, den legendären
Cowboy, der bei Sonnenuntergang auf dem
Pferd durch die Weiten
der Prärie reitet. Reisereportagen bildeten den
Beginn seiner Karriere –
es gibt wohl kaum ein
Land, das der 66-jährige
Analogfotograf noch
nicht bereist hätte. Zwischen 1977 und 1984
­begleitete Schmid über
250 Rockbands und deren Stars. Aber auch in
der Modefotografie setzte
er neue Akzente. Für
Schmid – insbesondere
auch in Zeiten von Photoshop – essentiell: Was
man auf den Fotos sieht,
hat sich so abgespielt –
nichts ist bearbeitet.
Das Kunstmuseum Bern
zeigt bis zum 21. Juli 2013
unter dem Titel «Real
Stories» erstmals eine
grossangelegte Übersichtsausstellung seiner
Arbeiten und Fotoserien.
Hannes Schmid, who
was born in Zurich in
1946, is best known for his
work on the “Marlboro
Man”, the mythical cowboy riding his horse
across the prairie at sunset. He began his career
with travel reports:
there’s hardly a country in
the world that this
66-year-old analogue
photographer has yet to
visit. From 1977 to 1984
he photographed over
250 rock bands and their
stars. He made a name
for himself in the fashion
world, too. The images
embody a key Schmid
concern, and one that is
all the more remarkable
in today’s Photoshop age:
what you see in the picture is what was really
there – nothing is edited.
Bern’s Museum of Fine
Arts is currently staging
the first-ever extensive
exhibition of Hannes
Schmid’s photographic
works and career. The
show, entitled “Real Stories”, runs until 21 July.
