All the instructors, who share the same burning desire to compete and contend, put aside their proverbial patience and kindness to meet hard-fought challenges, with courage and determination. Let’s take a look at the competition On Tuesday, the first day of competition, the individual category titles are assigned and our ski school wins six medals. • 2 silver medals with our director Peter Runggaldier and with Christine Gruber • 4 bronze with Ady Runggaldier, Heini Senoner, Ivan Malknecht and Robi Bernardi. Uli Perathoner and Sergio Zuberti take fourth place, Fredi Demez fifth and Norbert Delago sixth, which means they all qualify for the final race the next day. The last day of competitions was another successful day for us: • Christine Gruber becomes the Italian champion for effective and corrected times. • Our ski school wins the Italian title for corrected times in the team standings A.M.S.I. trophy (association of Italian ski instructors) with Peter Runggaldier, Fredi Demez and Robi Bernardi and takes second place for effective times with Uli Perathoner, Peter Runggaldier and Fredi Demez. A mother interviews our ViceDirector, Zeno Denicolo‘ (Head of children’s department and competition organiser) Mother: What’s the right age for a child to learn to ski? Was kann eure Skischule dafür bieten? Zeno: not before 4 years old. Skiing is tiring because you’re constantly trying to find your balance. A child of 2 or 3 hasn’t yet got the bone or muscle structure of a child of 4 or 5, and paediatricians will confirm this. My child is 4 and has never put skis on: what can your school offer? For children aged 4-12 we offer two types of course: “half day”, from 10.00-13.00, with two days from 10.00-16.00 (Thursday and Friday) and “whole day” courses, every day from 10.00-16.00. The weekly programme is: •Ski test to put the children in the right level course: Sunday and Monday •End of course race with prize giving: Wednesday (higher levels) and Thursday (lower levels) •End of course outing: Thursday and Friday (Junior, Speedy and higher levels) and Friday (lower levels) Where do the children doing the “all day” course eat? They eat in the Ski School canteen, where our cook, Herlinde, prepares a hot meal which will give the children the energy required for their afternoon on skis. What is the first thing you teach the children? To feel at home and become confident on the snow. After that, they learn to maintain their balance on skis and try to move and slide on the snow, until eventually they‘ll be doing snowplough turns. All of this takes place in the children’s park, which is fenced off and has two moving carpet lifts and various games. They are, of course, encouraged by their instructors; even our mascot, “Selvy” drops in now and again to watch and encourage our “little” guests. Il programma della settimana è il seguente: •Selezione corsi per classi di competenza: domenica e lunedì • Gara di fine corso con successiva premiazione: mercoledì (livelli più alti) e giovedì (livelli più bassi) • Gita di fine corso: giovedì e venerdì (Junior, Speedy e livelli più alti) e venerdì (livelli più bassi) Where does the end of course race take place, and where do they go for the end of course outing? And what do I do with my younger child who doesn’t ski? This year we’ve got the “Selvi” Mini club, which is a programme for nonskiing children, at our school. They have daily walks, games on the snow and other activities. At the end there is the prize giving where the winners receive a cup, and there’s a medal for everyone. The instructors organise various trips based on the ski standard of their group, and the weather conditions: for example the Sella Ronda, the Gardena Ski ring, Plan de Gralba, Seceda etc. They aim to be back by 16.00. From Sunday to Friday 9.00-16.00, it costs €35.00 for a half day and €50.00 for the full day. And what’s on offer for the over 10s? We offer the “Speedy Adventure Club” for children aged 10-13 , and the “Junior Club” for teenagers aged 13-17: they must know how to ski with parallel skis because they’ll be skiing back runs, and they’ll start to try new equipment such as snowblades, fun carvers etc. And for equipment? In the hire shop, which is right next to our office, you’ll find the latest skis and snowboards of the top brands. For those taking part in the group courses we offer a discounted package which includes lessons and all equipment including helmet, which is required by law for all children up to the age of 14. Are there any discounts for big families? Families who sign up 3 or more people into group lessons get a discount. I’d also like to remind our returning customers to bring their VIK cards in order to claim their individual loyalty discount on group lessons. ...well, I’m convinced, I’ll definitely be coming to your school to sign up Per le famiglie numerose praticate degli sconti? We look forward to seeing you. If you need any more information you can ask our secretaries and instructors. It is a non-profit making organisation, made up of 15 mountain rescue teams, and was officially founded in 1990, although it had been running since 1987. The Helicopter Rescue Service is organised and run by volunteers from the Ladin valleys of Gardena, Fassa and Badia, whose motivation has always been the team spirit which has united generations of Alpine Guides and climbers. Normally, the Aiut Alpin helicopter is used within a 10 minute flying radius to intervene in emergencies on the mountain, or in the valley. The emergency call must pass through the central 118 service. It is a seasonal service: winter and summer. Out of season the helicopter is used as an emergency transport for large events of many types, such as motorbike races, rallies, ski races, bike races etc. How many rescues do you do a day? On average we’re called out to 2.5 incidents a day. * When the helicopter arrives: if you need help, raise both arms so that the body takes on a “Y” shape. This means: “I do NOT need help” “do not land” “No” (as an answer to questions from the pilot or crew). alla propria sciata. Our main source of funding is through operations. In fact, the Provincial Helicopter Rescue Service reimburses all the flights which are requested through the 118 service, at a rate of €51.00 per minute. However, the actual cost is nearer €65.00 per minute, so the rest has to be financed through sponsorship (see our homepage), contributions from firms and private individuals, and subscribers. The Val Gadrena offers several routes of varying difficulty, which will satisfy this curiosity. For example the “Val Mezdi” (Midday Valley), that cuts through the vast Sella Group mountain. It is easily reached with the lifts of the Dolomiti Superski area. In just a few minutes we arrive on the panoramic terrace of “Sas Pordoi”, surrounded by white peaks and plains. Here you’re at around 3000 m (almost 10,000ft) and you’ll feel it in your breathing. From here most people know where the famous route goes, but only a few are expert enough to cross the snowy blanket. You then descend in tight curves towards the Pordoi Col, and then, carrying your skis, you climb gently for 45 minutes. Then a long traverse, now with your skis on. If the snow base is unstable you are advised to avoid this part by descending to the plateau below, and then reclimbing. Having arrived at the “Boe” refuge, which is often buried by snow, you start the steep descent of the Val Mezdi. Between vertical rock walls with tight, controlled turns, you arrive in the long, wide valley, which allows you to take some very strange routes and “consone” your skiing. Eventually the descend ends in a steep, narrow funnel, which sometimes brings you to a stop. This adventure will enrich your ski technique. It’s a very worthwhile experience. SKI Y M E D A C A Peter Runggaldier SKI ACADEMY The Peter Runggaldier Ski Academy was established to satisfy all the needs of customers who love competitive skiing and want to perfect their techniques as they race through a set of gates on a slope certified for Fis international competitions. The idea came up when Peter Runggaldier, winner of the 1995 World Cup Super-G, ended his athletic exploits and in the summer of 2000, along with Werner Perathoner and other athletes from the national teams, founded the Peter Runggaldier Ski Academy. In 2005 the Ski Academy became part of the Ski & Board School and Peter Runggaldier was appointed its director. Over the last few years, Ski Academy activities have focused on training athletes who participate in weekend races on a regular basis, and on teaching young people who want to prepare for the pre-selections to become a ski instructor. According to our experienced trainers, you must have a certain confidence while skiing in order to handle the gates and that’s why open field practice is important before trying the slalom or giant slalom gates. Open field skiing lets you curve where and when you want to while, on the track, there is a specific turning point, which makes things a bit more difficult. After filming customers as they ski downhill, instructors will make the necessary corrections during a break in a hut at the bottom of the run. Customers really appreciate this system because it allows them to make immediate corrections for the next run. To provide even greater safety, the school utilises Dainese equipment, a brand used by World Cup athletes for years. The Ski Academy’s strengths, other than the trainers and former athletes, include its position, slopes with various gradients and, above all, the fact that customers can ski on a reserved slope that’s closed to other skiers in the “PIZ SELLA” area. This slope has also been used by many other famous athletes, such as Marc Girardelli, Kjetil André Aamodt, Isolde Kostner, Werner Perathoner, Peter Runggaldier in addition to all the athletes in the valley. By now, “ski carving” is nothing new to anyone. All of us have been practicing it now for some time. However, not everyone knows the real importance of choosing the right ski and boot to optimise the recently acquired technique. What we see when we purchase or rent skis is only the “Sidecut”, i.e. the form of the ski that allows you to carry out a hypothetical curving radius without taking into account any additional factors, such as the type of snow, the centrifugal force, etc. But only very few know how different the skis’ internal material can be, since skis only seem to differ in terms of the external brands and colours. Today, it has become very difficult to recommend skis that will satisfy personal needs, and that’s why it’s important to be able to rent a pair of skis that you can try before buying them. What’s more, renting equipment has the advantage that you always have the latest-generation skis, prepared by professionals. How many times have you had the feeling that you couldn’t ski any more, especially in the afternoon when the slopes are no longer in the same condition as they were in the morning. Certainly, in this case, it may be caused by tiredness or the grappa savoured in the hut, but often the ski blades are no longer sharp enough and that reduces our skiing ability. In addition, to ski well, waxing is also important since it increases smoothness and may help to win a few competitions among friends… To ensure that the ski is as efficient as possible and will help us to have fun, it must be carefully prepared at least 2-3 times a week. Who better than a ski instructor, who interacts with skiers of all levels every day and who observes them directly on the slopes, can recommend the right choice of skis? Cross-country skiing has two different techniques, which need two different types of specialised equipment: • classic • skating To these two we can add the downhill technique, which is indispensable for coming safely down slopes. The Classic Technique The movements of classic are similar to walking, where the skis run parallel to each other in two “rails” cut into the snow. It is used on level ground. The skis move forward alternately with the opposite arm giving a push forward using a long pole. The classic technique is used on specially prepared pistes with parallel tracks cut into the snow using a purpose-built machine. The most important movements are the “skating with pole“ (long or short) and the “skating with double pole”. Currently in Freestyle the so-called “skating” technique is used, where forward movement is produced by pressing the inner edge of the ski into the snow, along with a push on the pole. The movement is similar to that used in ice-skating. The skis used are shorter and stiffer than those for the classic technique and the poles are longer. The technique requires specially prepared pistes. The Downhill Technique To descend, the movements are similar to those used in alpine skiing. The centre of balance must be kept low and the weight distributed evenly on both legs. Arms are held in front, slightly bent, with the chest inclined slightly forwards, down the slope. It is also possible to descend in snowplough, moving the bodyweight on 9 | Edition nr. 02 | Winter 2006/07 | [email protected] the ski and pressing the ski’s inner edge to make the turn.
