SUGGESTIONS FOR USING TEACHING TRANSPARENCY 4-1
Listening
1.
Prepare true/false statements based on the sample schedule. Have students indicate orally whether each
statement is true (stimmt) or false (stimmt nicht).
BEISPIEL Am Montag um 8 Uhr hat Heiko Deutsch, und danach von 9.45 bis
10.30 hat er Physik.
Stimmt nicht.

Make up a schedule for a hypothetical student. Have students fill out the blank schedule based on the information you give them. After students have completed the schedule, they should write a paragraph summarizing one day of that student’s schedule. Remind students to use sequencing words.
Speaking/Pair Work

Have pairs of students ask each other questions that will enable them to fill out each other’s class schedules.

Make copies of the transparency master and hand them out to students. Have students fill out their schedules on these copies. Working in groups of four, they should ask each other about their schedules. Have
one member keep track of who has which classes and when. After they have finished, ask each group which
subjects they wrote on their schedules. Keep a list of the subjects in columns across the board. Then have
the groups share the names of the students who have each class, and the different times at which they have
the class.
Writing/Speaking/Pair Work

Re-entry, Greetings, Kapitel 1, Erste Stufe Have students create a conversation based on the school
schedule they filled out in Activity 4. They should pretend it is the first day of school and they have just run
into their partner, who wants to know about their class schedule. Have them write out their conversations.
When they have finished, they could perform their conversations for the class.

Ask students questions about the school schedule shown on the transparency. Lead them to see that
German students have shorter class days than American students, and that they have different subjects
every day. In addition, you may want to let students know that at approximately age ten German students
are faced with a decision that will profoundly influence their college and career options later in life. Students
who go to the same elementary school (Grundschule) do not necessarily attend the same schools later on.
After they complete the elementary grades, they will attend one of three different kinds of schools: the
Gymnasium, the Realschule, or the Hauptschule. For more information, see p. 106 in the Level 3 Pupil’s
Edition.
