SWISS has become the first airline in the world to trial the ATSAW system. The new technology enables pilots to select the best flight level based on wind and weather to optimise their fuel consumption and thus reduce their CO² emissions. Mit Hilfe dieses Systems erhält der Pilot während des Fluges auf dem Navigationsdisplay Informationen über den ihn umgebenden he aviation sector is constantly researching innovations to enhance its flight operations, not only for travellers but in environmental terms, too. The new Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness (ATSAW) navigation aid should make a major contribution here: ATSAW gives the pilot a valuable tool for changing to a more efficient altitude in the course of a flight. The ATSAW approach is based on the fact that different wind and weather conditions prevail at different flight levels. So the more able pilots are to fly their aircraft in response to different situations, the more effectively they can utilise the winds and avoid any turbulence. Flying with a tailwind, for instance, can save sizeable amounts of fuel and thus also substantially reduce CO² emissions. Busy skies In the past, pilots have been limited in their ability to fly at an optimum altitude by the large traffic volumes on many air routes. Any aircraft flying at a particular flight level is sharing the airspace concerned with the aircraft above and below it, so any change of flight level needs to be carefully planned. It’s to help its pilots do this as safely and efficiently as possible that SWISS is currently trialling the ATSAW system, which has just been developed by Airbus, in its North Atlantic commercial operations. A pioneer in Europe SWISS has been selected as one of only five airlines around the world to participate in the pilot ATSAW project, which is being overseen by Eurocontrol, Europe’s umbrella air traffic management organisation. The aim of the innovation is to provide all aircraft with the new ADS-B IN technology. For the trial phase, three SWISS Airbus A330-300s have been so equipped. The new technology enables aircraft to automatic ally send their precise position and identity to ground stations and also process the corresponding information about other flights. The system then provides pilots with a display of all the air traffic around them with flight numbers, flight levels and speeds. This enables the pilots to better assess the current airspace situation; and this in turn should help them to change flight levels more easily and frequently and thus spend SWISS inside 105 Drei SWISS Airbus A330-300 nehmen an den ATSAW-Tests teil. The ATSAW approach offers benefits for passengers and the environment alike: areas of likely air turbulence can be more easily avoided, and the fuel savings that the new technology permits translate into lower CO² emissions. The first SWISS aircraft with the new technology installed took off from Zurich for Montreal on 7 February. And results to date have been highly promising, too. A driver of innovation SWISS’s ATSAW involvement is part of a broader innovation strategy at the airline to effect substantial reductions in fuel consumption and (thus) CO² emissions over the medium term. The strategy is being pursued on further fronts, too: the new Bombardier CS100 regional jets that will enter SWISS service from 2014 onwards will boast emissions per passenger that are over 25 per cent lower than those of the aircraft they replace; and further actions include the adoption of lighter cargo containers and the introduction of an on-board system that permits the reception of real-time meteorological data. The strategy has already proved its worth: SWISS has reduced its CO² emissions per passenger-kilometre by more than 17 per cent over the past ten years. Further innovations such as ATSAW will now continue the carrier’s efforts in this vital environmental area. Interviews with experts next page. 106 SWISS inside Gespräch mit Jörg Neubert Interview with Jörg Neubert Welche Rolle spielen CO²-Emissionen? How important are CO² emissions in all this? Very important! Minimising our fuel consumption – and thus our CO² emissions – is one of the key criteria when we come to adopt a new system. Safety, too, of course, is a paramount concern. Was ist genau Ihr Job? Flugkapitän Martin Brodbeck, Head of Flight Operations Engineering Captain Martin Brodbeck, Head of Flight Operations Engineering environment@ swiss.com What is your job exactly? My prime focus is on the requirements of the on-board avionics that are needed to plan and perform a flight – navigation systems, routing systems, monitoring systems and the like. Why can’t a flight just fly from A to B using GPS? It’s not that easy, I’m afraid. There are predefined airways up there. And a flight will also have to avoid areas of bad weather, or airspace that’s reserved for military use. Added to that, the air traffic above Europe is so dense, it’s sometimes like a city rush hour. ATSAW helps the pilots to assess their position as comprehensively as possible and optimally align it to all the various influences: weather, winds, other traffic and so on. What are the biggest challenges in introducing a system like this? The biggest problem is the number of parties involved. All the ground systems used in various countries have to be harmonised with the onboard systems of all the different aircraft types. So the biggest task is coordinating it all. There’s no way around this, though: if we were to just introduce the new system by ourselves, we’d have no benefit and a lot of extra costs. SWISS is clearly a driver in this ATSAW innovation. What other projects does the airline have in the pipeline? We’re constantly assessing further innovations. The next milestones here will be the introduction of a new flight-planning system, a real-time wind and routing uplink and lighter cargo containers. What I’m really looking forward to is 2014, when SWISS becomes one of the first airline in the world to put the new Bombardier CSeries regional aircraft into service! · Will systems like ATSAW ultimately eliminate pilots completely? No, they’ll be needed more than ever. After all, it’s still the pilot who’ll need to decide what the best routing will be. This is far too complex a task to be entrusted to a machine. ATSAW is just a decision-making aid. ·
