Although their manufacture differs only marginally from the production of non-colored components, users of pigments should be aware of some basic facts. Selecting the right pigment Selecting the right pigment is crucial for ensuring the quality of the finished product. Inorganic oxide pigments were shown to be particularly colorfast during several years of monitoring of colored concrete products that were stored in various places and under different climatic conditions. LANXESS supplies these oxide pigments under the Bayferrox® and Colortherm® brands. Due to their chemical composition and structure, they are not only insoluble in water and dilute acids and resistant to lime and alkaline substances but also completely weatherproof and lightfast, which makes them the perfect choice for coloring building materials. Pigments used for the coloring of cement- and/or lime-bound building materials are governed by the EN 12878 standard in all EU member states, as well as in Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. This standard specifies the relevant test methods for pigments but also includes clear guidance regarding the pigmentation characteristics of the products and the influence that the pigment may have on the technical parameters of the concrete. Prior to marketing a pigment to be used for coloring cement- and/or lime bound materials, the manufacturer must prove the pigment’s conformity to the specifications contained in EN 12878, which is ensured by: » Initial product testing; whenever a new pigment is produced or the type and quantity of additives modified, the manufacturer must prove the general suitability of the pigment by an initial test. » Internal quality control of the products at the factory; the concept of “in-process quality control“ refers to continuous internal quality control activities in the production of individual pigments and pigment mixes performed by the manufacturer. Influence of the inherent cement color on the product color Compliance with the specifications regarding internal quality control and related activities is checked once a year by an independent testing institution. If conformity with the specifications in the standard is established, the institution grants an “internal quality control certificate” to the manufacturer. The manufacturer can use this certificate to issue a declaration of conformity, which makes it possible to affix a CE mark. Pigments of the Bayferrox and Colortherm brands marketed by Lanxess carry the CE mark. A gray shade is not only a problem for laundry. Gray has a dulling effect on all colors, regardless of the application, which is why Portland cement concrete cannot be colored as brightly as concrete containing white cement. Bright and dark However, the added color purity resulting from the use of white cement also depends on the type of pigment applied: if black is used, there is hardly any difference between white and gray cement concrete. Such differences are minor if a dark brown or red shade is used, but highly significant if yellow is applied. Even laypeople easily understand that there is a difference between the coloring of white and gray cement. When switching to a different cement grade or supplier, it often turns out that such differences in the inherent color of the cement have an additional influence on the coloring result. Influence of aggregates on the product color When producing colored concrete, the aggregate particles are enclosed by the colored cement paste. In this process, it is possible that the particles of aggregates with a vibrant color are not covered completely so that the resulting shade is influenced by the inherent color of the aggregate. This effect shows as early as at the colored concrete production stage. The influence of the inherent aggregate color becomes even more significant during weather impact when aggregate particles are exposed as a result of surface weathering. The human eye then captures a mixed shade composed of the color of the cement paste and the visible portion of the aggregate. Similar to cement, the natural color of the sand impacts bright concrete shades (such as yellow or green) more strongly than dark shades (such as brown or black). Influence of pigmented layer thickness on the product color Identifying the optimal thickness of the pigmented layer is a significant cost reduction factor because the producer of a concrete mix will then only use the amount of pigment that is absolutely necessary. nachvollziehbar. The subsequent stages of pigment addition, however, soon lead to a threshold where the introduction of additional pigment ceases to result in a significant increase in color intensity, and thus becomes economically unviable. Among other factors, the definition of this saturation threshold depends on the system parameters of the concrete; for the very intense Bayferrox® pigments, however, it can generally be stated that additions in excess of 5% (relative to the amount of binder) are not necessary. Less intense pigments reach the saturation threshold only if considerably larger amounts are added. The required amount of pigment can be so large that the increase in the ratio of ultra-fine material may adversely affect the performance parameters of the concrete. Influence of water/cement ratio on the concrete color Have you ever asked yourself why the head of foam on beer is white whereas the beer itself is a yellow color? The foam consists of many small air bubbles, which show a light scattering pattern similar to that of white pigments. This comparison to the head of foam and the beer itself should illustrate the correlation between the color of the concrete and its water/cement ratio: excess mixing water evaporates from the concrete and creates cavities (fine pores), which act similarly to the bubbles in the foam on the beer: they scatter the incident light and brighten the concrete. The greater the water/ cement ratio, the brighter the concrete appears. This physical principle applies to both gray concrete without added pigments and colored concrete. The concrete producer should thus pay particular attention to the accurate dosing of the mixing water in order to prevent color variations. Distribution of pigments Quality is becoming increasingly important to the construction industry, which is why the accurate dosing of pigments and a sufficiently uniform dispersion/distribution are crucial. Geschäftsbereich Inorganic Pigments, LANXESS Deutschland GmbH 34 BFT INTERNATIONAL 04·2012 ↗ www.bft-international.com Beton und Farbe ← GALABAU The degree of dispersion is governed by the point in time when the pigment is fed into the mixer. It has become good industry practice to pre-mix the pigment with the aggregate for about 15 seconds prior to adding the cement. The subsequent mixing process is identical for both pigmented and un-pigmented concrete. Sequence of addition and mixing time At any rate, care should be taken to prevent the addition of all components at the same time or the addition of cement as the first component after sand. Mixing time is also relevant to the question whether a homogeneous distribution of the pigment is achieved. Each type of mixer requires a specific minimum mixing period, which amounts to 1.5 to 2 minutes for paddle mixers. If the actual mixing time is shorter, it is no longer possible to achieve a homogeneous mix even if the duration of the individual mixing steps or the sequence of component addition is modified. In conclusion, the following points should be emphasized: The industry generally uses iron oxide pigments for concrete coloring in different shades. Several parameters need to be considered in order to achieve an optimal coloring result. Most important factors include the selection of the right pigment and thickness of the pigmented layer, the consideration of the influence of the inherent cement color and of aggregates and mixing water on the color of the concrete.
