Basel – culture unlimited With 193,000 inhabitants, Basel is the third largest city in Switzerland, situated in the very northwest of the country near the French and German borders. The city, located on the Rhine, offers its visitors a unique mix of modern and historical architecture. The beautiful historic city centre, with buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries, is perfectly contrasted by contemporary buildings by world-renowned architects, such as Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta and Renzo Piano. A visit to Basel is not complete without seeing at least one of the almost forty museums, including the Fondation Beyeler, the Museum Tinguely and the Kunstmuseum Basel. Accessibility – airport and high-speed trains Thanks to the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, Basel is easily accessible from all major European cities and all European airport hubs. Furthermore, the city is integrated in the European high speed train network and served by the French TGV and the German ICE. The Zurich Airport with its many international connections can be reached in approx. 75 minutes via a direct railway connection. Free public transport Another interesting feature for delegates is the Mobility Ticket. When they stay overnight at a hotel in Basel, they can use the public transportation within the city free of charge throughout their entire stay. Congress Center Basel and conference hotels An advantage for meeting planners and conference delegates is that everything in Basel is right on their doorstep. The city centre is reached in only 20 minutes from the EuroAirport and all major meeting hotels are within walking distance from the Old Town. Even the Congress Center Basel, Switzerland’s biggest congress centre by surface area, which offers 25 conference rooms for up to 3,000 delegates, is located in the city centre with 1,000 hotel rooms in different categories nearby. Meeting planners who prefer to hold their meetings in a hotel can choose among renowned chains, such as Hilton, Swissôtel, Radisson Blu, Ramada, Dorint and Best Western, or private hotels with individual charm like the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, the Hotel Basel, the Hotel Euler or the Hotel Der Teufelhof. After a complete refurbishment the Pullman Basel Europe (former Mercure Hotel Europe Basel) will re-open in spring 2014 offering 141 generously sized hotel rooms and six spacious meeting rooms for up to 200 delegates. A new hotel by the Accor Group will open in fall 2014. The 4* Novotel will offer 145 rooms as well as four meeting rooms and the adjacent 2* IBIS Budget will provide another 194 rooms. Other thrilling dinner venues are the Pantheon Basel, a vintage car museum, the football stadium St. Jakob-Park Basel, the neo-Gothic Elisabeth Church or the ships of the Basler Rheinschifffahrt. A well-kept secret is the cinema complex Pathé Küchlin, where you can rent single halls or even the whole complex for a conference, product presentation or a private movie evening. Projects to come are extensive renovations of the St. Jakobshalle Basel and the Stadt-Casino Basel.
