Die Balearen sind das perfekte Ziel für
Segler. Ob Katamaran, Jolle oder Yacht
– für jeden findet sich etwas. MallorcaSegelexperte Oliver Ochse weiß, worauf es
für Segelfreunde auf Mallorca ankommt.
Den Segellehrer trafen wir in der Bucht von

Was macht diese Insel so besonders für Segler?
Es ist für jeden etwas dabei: Kurze Distanzen an der
Ostküste, lange Schläge zu den Nachbarinseln.
Wunderschöne Buchten zum Genießen und Baden.
Bei gutem Wind anspruchsvolles Segeln an der
Westküste. Segelschulen für den Einsteiger und
hochwertige Regatten für Jollen und Yachtsegler.
Auch im Sommer haben wir hohe Windsicherheit
in den drei großen Buchten Pollensa, Alcudia
und Palma.
Wer ist in welchem Revier zu Hause?
Die Buchten von Alcudia und Pollensa
haben mehrere Segelschulen mit unterschiedlichstem Bootspark, vom kleinen
Opti oder Kindercat über moderne
Gleitjollen bis zum sportlichen Kielboot
fürs Regattatraining. Beide Buchten
haben auch im Sommer eine Thermik,
die gute Segelbedingungen verspricht
und nicht zu stark ist. Außerdem sind die
inneren Bereiche der Buchten vor starken Wellen sehr gut geschützt. Wer einen
Segelschein machen möchte oder mit dem
Segelsport startet, findet hier die idealen
Bedingungen. Die Bucht von Palma ist ein
guter Ausgangspunkt, um das Charterrevier

Balearen zu erkunden. Man kann jeden Abend in einer
anderen Bucht oder einem anderen Hafen verbringen.
Bei mehr als einer Woche ist auch eine Tour zu den
Nachbarinseln Ibiza oder Formentera gut machbar.
Eine Tipp für einen Törn?
Einmal um die Insel ist ein Muss. Am besten im Mai
oder Juni, wenn es mal kräftig bläst. Außerdem, wenn
das Wasser warm genug ist zum Baden, aber noch nicht
August. Unbedingt einmal an die Südküste von Menorca
segeln. Dort gibt es eine Vielzahl von Buchten, die vom
Land aus nur schwer zu erreichen sind, und man kann
teilweise alleine dort die Nacht verbringen. Die Naturschutzinsel Cabrera ist auch eine Reise wert. Eine
Nacht an der sicheren Boje unter dem Sternenhimmel, ein Gläschen Rotwein, den Fisch auf dem
Grill und der Alltag ist vergessen.
Welche Marinas bzw. Häfen sollte ich gesehen gehaben?
Mein persönlicher Favorit ist Pto. Colom
und die riesige Naturbucht von Mahon auf Menorca. Der Service in der
Privatmarina von Cala D’or ist nicht der
preiswerteste, aber phänomenal.
Wo stimmen die Preise nicht?

Da liege ich mit Glück alleine mit Heckleinen. Am
Sunseeker-Steg in Mahon 250 Euro für eine 45-FußYacht oder in Ibiza-Stadt 300 Euro auszugeben, ist
ebenfalls jenseits von Gut und Böse.
Welche Ankerplätze dürfen auf einem Törn
nicht fehlen?
Ganz klar Cabrera, weiter die Küste hoch neben Porto
Christo die Cala Petit, dann an die Südküste Menorcas in die Cala Galdana, zurück dann zur kurzen
Pause, aber nicht über Nacht, vor die Cala Deia oder
Port Valldemossa und noch ein kurzer Badestopp in
der Cala Figuera westlich von Palma.
Und für sportliche Segler?
Gibt es auch eine ganze Menge. Die Olympioniken
trainieren nicht ohne Grund den Winter über in der
Bucht von Palma. Die erste große Regatta der Saison
ist dann zu Ostern die Princess Sophia Regatta.
Danach dann das erste Aufeinandertreffen der Kielyachten bei der Palmavela Regatta und natürlich das
seglerische Highlight im Mittelmeer, die Copa del Rey.
Wer einmal an solch einer Regatta teilnehmen möchte,
aber kein eigenes Boot hat, für den biete ich die Regattateilnahmen Palmavela Regatta und Copa del Rey
an. Dazu gibt es jeweils ein Training vorab.
Wo finde ich Segelschulen und Vercharterer?
Eine große Segelschule ist „Sail & Surf Pollensa“. Dort
ist das Angebot komplett vom Einsteiger bis zum Fortgeschrittenen und Yacht. Die anderen Segelschulen
wie „Wind & Friends“ in Alcudia haben einen anderen
Bootspark, wie Topcat anstelle von HC 16. Vercharterer gibt es wie Sand am Meer. Da ist in jedem Hafen
mindestens einer zu finden. Wenn ich nach Menorca
will und nur eine Woche Zeit habe, empfiehlt sich ein
Boot von CM Charter aus Pollensa.

A sailing paradise
The Balearic Islands are the perfect destination for fans of catamarans, dinghies and yachts alike.
Mallorca-based sailing teacher Oliver Ochse knows what is important to sailors here. We met him
in the Bay of Pollensa.
What makes this island such a special place for
sailing?
There’s something for everyone: short trips along the east
coast, longer tours to the neighbouring islands. Beautiful
bays for relaxing and bathing. Challenging sailing on
the west coast when wind conditions are right. Sailing
schools for beginners and top-class regattas for sailors of
dinghies and yachts. Reliable wind conditions prevail in
the three big bays of Pollensa, Alcudia and Palma even
during the summer months.
Which areas specialise in which types of sailing?
The bays of Alcudia and Pollensa boast several sailing
schools whose varied fleets range from little Optis and
kid cats via modern dinghies all the way to sporty keel
boats for regatta training. The thermal currents in both
bays are not too strong and make for good sailing conditions, even in summer. And the inner areas of the bays
are well protected from strong waves. Those looking to
obtain a sailing licence and complete newcomers to sailing will find ideal conditions here. The Bay of Palma is
a good starting point from which to embark on a cruise
of the Balearic Islands. Every night can be spent in a different bay or port. People who have over a week to spare
can easily make it as far as Ibiza or Formentera.
Have you got a particular cruise tip?
You simply have to circumnavigate the island. The best
time to do it is in May or June, when the winds can
be strong but the water is already warm enough for
swimming. And the sailing off the southern coast of
Menorca is great too – there are a number of bays that
are hard to access from dry land and you can sometimes
spend the night there in complete solitude. The Cabrera
Archipelago Nature Reserve is also well worth a visit. A
night under the stars with a glass of red wine and some
fish on the barbecue makes you forget your everyday cares.
Which marinas and ports are the most interesting?
My own favourite is Porto Colom, and there’s also the
vast natural bay of Mahon on Menorca. The service at
the private marina of Cala D’Or is fantastic, although it
doesn’t come cheap.
Where are the prices too steep?
Mooring at a buoy in the Bay of Formentor will cost me
at least as much as it would at a private marina. But Cala
Muerta is just four miles away, and with a bit of luck I
can attach my stern lines and be on my own. A Sunseeker
berth in Mahon costs €250 for a 45-foot yacht, while a
berth in Ibiza Town can set you back €300 – also pretty
pricey.
And the best anchorage grounds on a cruise?
Cabrera of course, then further up the coast at Cala Petit
near Porto Christo, and also Cala Galdana on the southern coast of Menorca: on the way back it’s nice to stop
briefly – but not overnight – close to Cala Deia or Port
Valldemossa, and again for bathing at Cala Figuera to the
west of Palma.

What about more ambitious sailors?
There’s plenty for them to do too. It’s not for nothing that
Olympic hopefuls train all winter in the Bay of Palma.
The first major regatta of the season is the Princess
Sophia Regatta at Easter. Then comes the first keel yacht
race at the Palmavela Regatta, and we mustn’t forget the
top sailing competition in the Mediterranean, the Copa
del Rey. I offer would-be participants without a boat of
their own the opportunity to take part in the Palmavela
regatta and the Copa del Rey. This involves some advance
training.

Where are the sailing schools and charter companies located?
Sail & Surf Pollensa is one of the big sailing schools
with a vast offering for newcomers and advanced
yachtsmen alike. The other sailing schools, such as
Wind & Friends in Alcudia, have a different type of
fleet – Topcats instead of HC 16s. The charter companies are too numerous to mention, with at least one
in every port. For those who want to sail to Menorca
in just a week, I’d recommend contacting CM Charter
in Pollensa.
