Riga ist nicht nur eine
pittoreske alte Stadt im Balti­
kum, berühmt für strenge Ziegel­
stein­gotik und überbordenden
Jugendstil. Riga – das ist der Norden
im Osten des Westens Europas. Lettlands romantische und
zugleich elegante Metropole liegt an
einem Kreuzungspunkt europäi­
scher Kulturen. Im Lauf der
Geschichte haben alle grossen
Nachbarn die Stadt für eine gewisse
Zeit beherrscht und mitgeprägt.
Als kleine,
lange unter­
drückte Nation
­betonen die Letten
heute bewusst ihre
bodenständigen,
natur­verbundenen
Traditionen. Sie
zelebrieren ihre
kulturelle wie
staatliche Eigen­
ständigkeit nicht
minder stolz als die Zugehörigkeit
zur EU und zum Euroraum.
Im Stadtbild, im Verhalten
und im Denken der Menschen und
selbst in der Küche schimmert aber
bis heute die bürgerliche Geschäf­
tig­keit deutscher Hanse-Kaufleute
und die kreative Rationa­lität der
Schweden durch. Der Tiefgang der
russischen Seele ist ebenso gegen­
wärtig wie der optimistische Fort­
schrittsglaube der Sowjetideologie.
So schön die Fassaden Rigas sein
mögen – es lohnt sich, auch dahin­
ter auf Spurensuche zu gehen!

Riga is not just a picturesque old
town on the Baltic, famed for
its brickwork Gothic and its abun­
dance of art nouveau. Riga is the
north in the east of western Europe!
Latvia’s romantic as well as
­elegant capital stands at an inter­
section of European cultures. All
the country’s large neighbours have
called this city their own for a cer­
tain time over the years; and each of
them has contributed in the process
to the Riga we know today.
As a small and
long-repressed
nation, Latvians
today consciously
emphasize their
down-to-earth
and close-to-na­
ture traditions.
They celebrate
their cultural and
their political in­
dependence,
and are equally proud of their EU
and eurozone membership.
Yet in its appearance, in the
character and mentality of its peo­
ple and even in its cuisine, Riga still
bears strong traces of both the bus­
tle of northern Germany’s Hanseatic
traders and the creative rational­ity
of the Swedes. And the depth of
the Russian soul, too, is as present
in Riga today as is the “faith in the
­future” that was such a hallmark of
Soviet ideology. So however beauti­
ful the city’s façades may be, it’s well
worth looking behind them, too!
