Dear Readers,
Focusing on the powers of nature
with a scientific pioneering spirit
For more than 50 years, ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND care products have been
innovatively combining nature and science. The blend of superior natural ingredients
and botanical hyaluronic acid makes our color cosmetics unique, at the same
time supplying your skin with moisture.
What does the word »sustainability« really mean to you? Originally
a key principle in forest management, sustainability has now become
a guiding social vision. »Only cut as much wood as the forest can
bear! As much wood as can grow back again!« This was how the
principle of sustainability was formulated for the first time in 1713 by
Hans-Karl von Carlowitz. Unfortunately this term is increasingly
losing its true power and meaning because it has been overused and
not properly explained.
Our new »commitment« section on page 7 of this issue and all
future issues will therefore highlight concrete social topics, campaigns
and values of special importance to us. Our focus this time: How we
keep our CO2 footprint small at our corporate headquarters in Calw.
After all, when we say our products are natural this also means that
they are manufactured in accordance with the principles of sustainability. You can rest assured that our strong sense of ecological and social
responsibility is reflected in the making of all of our products. Our environmental responsibility does not begin with supporting the ecological
projects used to generate our raw materials, it begins here in our offices.

Nina Eichinger has a big heart. The
presenter and actress loves animals,
children and nature. Yet Nina’s mother
still laughs at her attempts at gardening. The personable blonde explains
why in the following interview.
Nina
Eichinger
»I need stage
fright to keep me
on my toes.«
What do you find so fascinating about being a
presenter?
Presentation work is very multi-faceted, that attracts
and enthralls me. As a presenter, you are responsible
for the mood and creating suspense. You have the privilege of introducing interesting people and you can
help to get opinions across. The opportunity to incorporate my own personality and play an active role is
something I also especially enjoy. I love verbal communication and I feel at home on the stage. I have sometimes wondered if I could also express my creativity in
writing, but have found that I can make better use of
my talents on the stage than on paper.
You are an active supporter of ecological and social
causes. What are your focal points here?
As a child, I adored animals. They meant everything to
me. For a long time it seemed logical that, like many
girls, I should want to grow up to be a vet or work in
conservation. Jane Goodall was and still is my hero. She
has led an incredibly meaningful and exciting life,
something I find worthy of emulation. Studying rainforest ecology in tropical Australia opened up a whole
new world for me, the fascinating world of plants. And
now I really enjoy working with plants. My mother still
laughs a little about her Nina as a gardener, because I
never had a green thumb growing up. Although I have
always had a way with animals and take great joy in
spending time with my dog Loba, for example, I still
have much to learn about plants. I have started planting lots of different vegetables and am enjoying the
challenge of feeding myself at least in part with fresh
food from my own garden. There are still setbacks, but
that just motivates me to learn more and to experiment. Emotionally speaking, I feel a deep connection
with trees. They give me tranquility and peace of mind.
It is common to experience stage fright before a
performance. Do you get stage fright and if so, how do
you keep yourself calm?
Yes, I do experience stage fright before performances.
As a matter of fact, I need it because it supplies the
tension I need to keep me on my toes and stay wide
awake on the stage. I center myself by breathing
deeply before a performance and thinking about the
worst thing that could possibly happen to me on the
stage. The likelihood that this worst-case scenario will
occur is very low, so I can then relax because I know
that – no matter what happens on the stage, – it won’t
be as bad as that. Once on the stage I simply press on,
hope for the best and try to enjoy it!
What organizations in particular do you support and
what do you want to accomplish?
It has been great joy for me to carry on my father’s legacy
by continuing to operate his foundation »Artists for
Kids« together with my cousin. This foundation supports
children and young people in crisis. Many of them grew
up in difficult situations or come from broken homes. I
have always loved children and I know that a happy
childhood is the best foundation for a happy adulthood.
After all, only happy people can help make the world a
better place. Even as a child, I saved my money and did
odd jobs so I could donate my earnings to Greenpeace
or WWF. Today I am drawn to smaller organizations, in
particular Sea Shepherd, an environmental activist

Nina Eichinger was born
in 1981 and is the daughter
of film producer Bernd
Eichinger. After attending an
intensive acting course in Los
Angeles in 2001, she went on
to study environmental sciences. In 2014 she presented
the Bavarian Film Awards,
among other things. She has
also acted in several televi-

They identify fully with their mission and have the
courage to enter into the necessary confrontations. But
I am still at the stage of orienting myself and am open
to the possibility of throwing all my efforts into supporting one cause or one organization. Together with others
who think the same way I do, I could even imagine
founding a small organization devoted to solving one of
our most significant problems.
You grew up in the movie-making industry and have
strong ties to culture. Do you see things through
»green« lenses there as well?
As far as I am concerned, green ideas and culture are a
wonderful pairing with lots of potential for synergy.
There are far too few movies devoted to green topics.
That is another reason why I actively support the Green
Me Film Festival that will be held again next year in late
January in Berlin. The festival gives green documentaries
in particular an opportunity to shake people out of their
complacency, motivate them and inspire them.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis to be more
environmentally aware?
The area of diet and nutrition, for example, gives me
many opportunities every day to help protect nature
and the environment. In concrete terms, that means that
my diet is almost entirely vegan, using organic produce.
This also means that my choice of food can incorporate
not only environmental principles, but ethical and moral
aspects as well. What’s more, in light of the impending catastrophe of climate change, a vegan diet also helps me
to significantly minimize my ecological footprint. However, I have lasting deficits in other areas, – for example because of flying so much. I attempt to offset this by being
very consistent about what I eat. It is not about doing
penance, but achieving overall balance. I should also note
that I didn’t become vegan just because of my environmental consciousness and love of animals alone, but also
because I really like how creative vegan cuisine tastes. I
must admit that I sometimes succumb to temptation, but
only when I know where the meat is from and that the
animals led a good life.
How do you reflect on sustainability?
Oh my. Sustainability is a highly complex topic of importance to our very survival. Practically all areas of life and
in particular our entire consumption behavior needs
to be aligned with the principles of sustainability. That
is not the goal, but the path to it. On this path, we repeatedly notice how far we still have to go and that
there are other areas in which we need to behave more
sustainably.

Sustainability
in practice
The CSE seal (Certified Sustainable
Economics) certifies that BÖRLIND
practices sustainable business
management. One of the key issues
is consistently reducing energy
consumption in order to further
lower CO2 emissions: this includes
CO2-neutral shipping, ecologically
efficient route planning for the
sales force, green electricity, roof
renovation, insulation and repeat
usage of energy already generated.
Climate neutral
More than 100 metric tons of
CO2 were offset in 2012 with
the CO2-neutral shipping option
from Deutsche Post. The funds are
used to support projects such as
a biomass power plant in India,
a wind power station in Nicaragua
and reforestation in Uganda.

BÖRLIND uses these
steps to achieve
a positive CO2 footprint
The ecological footprint, also known as the carbon
footprint, is a measure of the total set of greenhouse gases generated by a person, company or
other entity. The primary goal is of course to generate as few greenhouse gases as possible. Compensation is only the second-best solution. BÖRLIND
uses a combination of various energy-saving technologies, energy efficiency measures and energy recovery practices to keep its annual emissions low.
The family-run company
BÖRLIND and its 200 employees
manufacture over five million
natural cosmetics products each
year. Thanks to various climate
protection measures, approximately 647 metric tons of greenhouse gases are emitted during
the manufacturing process. For
better clarity: On average, one
German citizen produces ten
metric tons of carbon dioxide per
year. BÖRLIND thus produces only
as much CO2 as 65 people.

Prometheus’ calling, too. This Titan of Greek
mythology would certainly have enjoyed giving
humans even more good things that they could
use to help themselves. Prometheus, which meant
»forethought« or literally »the forethinker« in ancient
Greek, is described as a skillful and clever god who
thought things through carefully first. As a benefactor
to mankind, he stole fire from Mount Olympus and
brought it to humans on Earth. He also showed them
how to build houses and protect themselves from diseases. Prometheus saw what knowledge and materials
humans needed to further their development.

Myths, fables and legends are naturally of no relevance
to Guylaine Le Loarer and her team in the research and
development laboratory at ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. And
yet, there are parallels to the forethinker of Greek
mythology. Thirst for knowledge and forethought do
play a key role for the BÖRLIND development team as
well: Researchers are always discovering new hidden
potential in nature and learning more about the
8 | natural woman 2_2014
How did you discover that olive leaf
extract activates the proteasomes
naturally occurring in the skin?
One of the most important components
of olive leaf extract is oleuropein. According
to the most recent medical studies, this
substance has many properties that promote good health. Among other things, it
stimulates the activity of our proteasomes,
which essentially function as the cleaning
system for the cells. The effect of olive leaf
extract was proven with the help of a
test substrate that starts to glow when
proteasome activity increases. Activation
can be ascertained based on this reaction.
What type of research work did the
BÖRLIND laboratory research perform
when developing this innovation?
With new innovations such as this one, the
BÖRLIND laboratory examines emulsion
bases that enable the customer to access
the full effects of the high-quality active ingredients of these state-of-the-art technologies. In order to do this, we test the active
ingredient’s compatibility with high-quality
vegetable oils, fats and plant extracts used
as the basis for the cream. Each laboratory
sample we produce must pass stability tests.
At the same time, the emulsion is also examined under the microscope to ensure it has
the necessary fine dispersion of water and
oil drops, an especially important feature. In
each trial, several persons are asked about
how the cream feels on their skin in order to
optimize the tactile characteristics of the
fluid used as a carrier for the precious active
ingredients. It is only then that the additional
steps necessary for market launch of a
product are taken, such as microbiological
challenge testing, external dermatological
efficacy verifications and external skin
compatibility tests.
How is the fluid used?
It is applied to cleansed skin. Daytime or
nighttime skin care products can then be
applied over top as needed. This fluid is able
to repair skin damage caused by UV rays,
especially after the summer. And it is perfect
for pairing with Beauty Pearls. Together
with them, NatuRepair provides your skin
with full protection against harmful
environmental influences.

unhealthy modern lifestyle. In particular, it is possible
to harness the skin’s own natural cellular repair
mechanisms. Without self-healing abilities, the cells
would quickly die. This natural protection against DNA
damage decreases with age, however, even though
the body’s cells remain under continual attack from
UV rays, stress and the harmful substances that
we breathe in, eat and drink. This poses immense
challenges to the regenerative abilities of the DNA.
The proteasomes in the cells must also continually
break down defective proteins so that cellular development can continue to function correctly. The proteasomes play a vital role here: Together with the protein
ubiquitin (see illustration to the left) , they ensure that
any misfolded and potentially dangerous proteins in
the cells are rendered harmless. In order for a cell to be
healthy, only those proteins that it needs should be
present at a certain point during its development.

s masters of survival, nutrient storehouses
and producers of oxygen, algae are of vital
importance to the oceans. One kilogram of
algae contains as many amino acids, minerals, trace
elements and polyphenols as some 100,000 liters
of ocean water. »I like algae because of its highly
concentrated ingredients. When I saw Caulerpa lentillifera, also known as green caviar, another thing that
immediately fascinated me was its pearl-like structure.
This was what inspired me to create pearls for facial

algae researcher for many years now.
The nourishing anti-pollution pearls and gel

other Nature is fond of revealing her extraordinary potential. Nowhere is this more
apparent than in the gorge-filled mountains
surrounding the Ardèche River. The ingredients
for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND natural cosmetics products
are as exquisite as the region’s Chardonnay and
Sauvignon blanc, with their incomparable aromas –
of apricot, white acacia blossom, citrus and mint. The
torch lily is completely unique.
Ten years ago, the French businessmen Armand
Tronc-Reynard and Hervé Mermin discovered this exotic
flower for themselves and cultivated it in their fields in
the department of Ardèche in the Rhône-Alpes region.
They grow the brilliant yellow-orange flowers in order
to harvest the valuable nectar for use in cosmetics. They
are the world’s first torch lily farmers. Besides BÖRLIND,
just one other conventional luxury cosmetics manufacturer purchases this precious raw material for its skin
care products. Monsieur Hervé Mermin is certain that
things will stay this way as well: »We will never produce
the extract in large amounts. We produce only for our
two customers in the quality they require.« Two entirely
organically farmed fields covering a total of four hectares
of land are planted with the exotic plant, originally a
native of South Africa, exclusively for the natural cosmetics company from the Black Forest. No pesticides or
chemical fertilizers are used; weeds are pulled by hand.
»Sometimes the young plants are eaten by mice.
However, this region is home to many birds of prey,
so the problem takes care of itself,« says Mermin. »The
only thing we don’t have a solution for is the mistral
wind,« he adds. This strong, cold wind is the farmers’
greatest enemy. If it strikes the plants before the harvest,
the blossoms become stuck together and dry out. »As
a result,« says Mermin, »the harvest can sometimes be
close to zero liters.«
In the heart of the Provence, fiery red
torch lilies intermingle with lavender
The torch lily is usually very hardy. All that it needs is a
sunny location with rich, somewhat moist soil. »That is
exactly what it gets in our fields, which are located in a
former swamp area and are therefore very fertile,« says
Mermin. Up to 70 kinds of this perennial, herbaceous
rocket flower grow in South Africa. »When they

drinking the blossom juice straight from the plant,«
says Mermin. It is slightly sweet, rich in amino acids,
minerals, fatty acids and phytoquinones, which have
an anti-inflammatory effect. »Here in southern France,

Rich in enzymes, the nectar vitalizes the skin,
supplying it with an intensive dose of moisture,
protecting it against free radicals and stimulating cell
regeneration. An in-vitro study from an independent
institute found that the nectar also suppresses the
collagen-degrading enzyme elastase.

The organic blossom nectar is harvested once a year
in June, even before the bees take flight and the first
rays of sunshine warm the picturesque landscape of
the Ardèche. This is when the plants have the largest
quantity of nectar. The harvest never takes place in the
rain, however, as that would dilute the raw material.
Fifteen harvesters press the lilies like a sponge for five
to seven days, as long as the flowers are in bloom. The
blossoms are left whole with no visible effects. Each
torch lily yields four to ten drops of nectar. The result
is extremely precious: 80,000 torch lilies produce 20
to 30 liters of gold-colored blossom nectar. More than
enough of the nectar is left for the busy bees after the
The nectar and all of its active ingredients are incorporated into the new NatuPerfect Anti-Pigment & Brightening Fluid. Before being used in production, the
only process it undergoes is filtration through
increasingly fine sterile filters to remove unwanted
particles and impurities. The third and final microfilter
is so fine that it even catches germs. Purity is guaranteed by microbiological inspections. The nectar is then
decanted and stored in a cool location until the precious drops are added to the formula. Now the fiery red

Sweet Idleness
S
weet idleness – no phrase could better express
the atmosphere of Zagreb. Sofas, arm chairs,
chaise lounges – when the weather is good,
anything comfortable is set outside in the streets of
Croatia’s capital city. Natives and tourists alike fill
the open-air lounges, relaxing on the soft cushions
and pillows while savoring specialty coffees. The
inhabitants of Zagreb have a passion for coffee. Perhaps a result of their geographical proximity to Italy?
Or maybe it come from the Turks, who once tried to
conquer the city? One thing is certain: The culture of
sipping coffee at sidewalk cafés is an integral part of
the relaxed character of this metropolis.
With just 800,000 inhabitants, Zagreb is one of
Europe’s smaller capital cities, but one with a very colorful history. It withstood the Ottomans, was a part of the
Habsburg monarchy, endured communists, fascists and
nationalists and was severely damaged by a devastating
earthquake in 1880. The wounds from these catastrophes have scarred over, but they have left stories behind.
Such as the origin of the city’s name. A thirsty margrave
is said to have asked a woman named Mandusa to draw
water for him at a well. His request »Mandusa, zagrabi!«
led to the name Zagreb. And Mandusa? She lent her
name to Mandusevac Fountain in Ban Jelacic Square, the
heart of the city, which is a popular gathering place
for young and old, framed in perfect style by the palace
and coffee houses. The oldest building, No. 15, was
constructed in 1827. Just a few meters further, in house

throw away, visitors will find the Dolac – Zagreb’s
most beautiful market. Under the distinctive red
sun umbrellas, merchants hawk fresh produce from
local farmers, which is usually of excellent quality. A
few steps further is the picturesque flower market,
surrounded by innumerable bars and restaurants. You
are cordially invited to take a seat, slow down and
watch the world stroll by.
In Zrinjevac Park, old fountains, statues and
pavilions create an ambiance that appeals to art lovers
and courting couples. The park is lined by landmark
buildings such as the Croatian Academy of Sciences

Court of Croatia. Just a few minutes’ walk away,
narrow paths lead through the Zagreb Botanical

combination with the economic upswing experienced
in the 19th century, was what ultimately led to these

Strolling, lingering and people-watching are
considered good form in this Croatian metropolis. The
delicious cream cakes and strudels with a variety of
sweet fillings also come with the territory, a passion
that the inhabitants of Zagreb share with their
counterparts in Vienna. The common history and geographical proximity to Austria is evident. Zagreb’s
nickname, »Little Vienna,« is also justified by its
architecture. The Viennese architect Hermann Bollé
designed many of the buildings in this Balkan city.
Until 1850, what is today known as Zagreb was a
collection of officially separate settlements. They
included the diocese of Kaptol on the east hill with its
striking cathedral as well as the free market town of
Gradec on the west hill, now the Upper City. Its
emblem is St. Mark’s Church, the roof of which bears
the coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on
the left side and the municipal coat of arms of Zagreb
on the right side. When evening descends on the picturesque alleyways and back courtyards of the Upper
City, the lamplighter emerges. He walks the bumpy
cobblestones for over an hour and half, setting all of
the approximately 200 gas lamps aglow. One unique
feature here is the 66-meter-long funicular spanning
an idyllic flight of stairs between the Upper and Lower
City. Every ten minutes since 1891, it has been transporting passengers of all sorts – including lovers and
those with broken hearts. The Museum of Broken
Relationships pays a unique tribute to
the latter. A tiny bottle full of tears, a
gifted ring from a bubble gum machine,
the axe used to demolish the belongings of an unfaithful ex-boyfriend –
mementos of relationships terminated
both voluntarily and involuntarily. They
tell stories. Some romantic, some tragic,
some confusing. Just like the city of
sweet idleness itself. All of them are
well worth listening to.

care & wellness
It is possible to gently alleviate dry skin
and symptoms of neurodermatitis at
home. How? By finding the right skin
care products that enhance the skin’s
natural regenerative abilities.
D
»Dear skin,
it’s time to relax!«
Dry skin and neurodermatitis – brought into perfect
balance with plant-based active ingredients
ry skin sufferers are easy to identify: Their
skin is taut and itches after cleansing unless
they apply a moisturizing cream immediately – no matter what the time of year. Intensive
sunbathing, dry heater air, excessively hot baths and
incorrect skin care only exacerbate the problem. Dry
skin can be genetic or can be related to aging. Sebum
production decreases with age, reducing the ability of
the epidermis to retain moisture.
In contrast, those suffering from neurodermatitis
would prefer to exchange their skin for a new one,
especially when in the midst of an acute episode. Red,
scaly, irritable, thickened skin, often accompanied by
weeping patches and intense itchiness, leads to a
vicious circle of itching and scratching. This disease is
also frequently referred to as atopic dermatitis and endogenous eczema. Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin
condition in which the immune system is impaired. No
cream in the world can heal the disease, but some can
help the skin to regenerate better and become more
robust. Neurodermatitis sufferers should identify
the actual causes of the disease together with their
dermatologist. There are many potential causes:
negative stress, psychological and mental problems or
intestinal diseases can all trigger neurodermatitis.
An unstable skin barrier needs
protective, gentle care
In both skin disorders, the skin barrier is weak and
no longer able to compensate for the loss of oil and
moisture by itself. Bacteria, allergens and fungi can
more easily penetrate the skin, where they then cause
infection. Long-term care with oil-replenishing,
soothing and moisture-retaining active ingredients
made from plant extracts and oils can be highly
effective because it restores the natural protective
substances that the skin lacks. Each plant oil has a
large number of skin-friendly active ingredients. In
the skin’s hydrolipid mantle, its outermost layer, the
sebaceous glands produce some of the exact same
substances found in plant-based oils from flowers,
Three questions
for DADO SENS
My skin is extremely dry after
showering. What can I do?
We recommend using ExtroDerm Cleansing
Shower Emulsion to prevent dry skin after
showering. This gently cleansing emulsion
counteracts itchiness even while showering
and prevents the skin from drying out. When
finished, apply ExtroDerm Skin Balm to the
body and massage in thoroughly. The balm
supplies the skin with moisture and increases
its resilience, while at the same time enhancing
the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture.
Which skin care products can I use
when my skin is red and weepy,
such as after itching?
In this case it is better to first apply Acute Cream
or Acute Spray from the DADO SENS series
ProBalance Akut. Both contain licorice root
extract, b-glucane and zinc, which soothe skin
and strengthen the immune system. The ExtroDerm products are too rich for weepy skin. You
should wait until the skin has stopped weeping
and is »only« dry before applying ExtroDerm
Intensive Cream to highly irritated areas.
If the skin is still reddened, we recommend a
combination of ProBalance Acute Cream or
Spray, followed by ExtroDerm Intensive Cream.
I suffer from neurodermatitis.
In winter I often have the feeling that
ExtroDerm Skin Balm is not enough.
What can I do?
Give especially sensitive and dry patches of
skin the extra care they need with ExtroDerm
Intensive Cream. In addition to borage seed oil,
urea and panthenol, it contains plant oil derivatives such as squalane, a natural component of
sebum. Squalane therefore absorbs into the skin
especially easily and leaves it feeling velvety soft.

nuts and seeds: triglycerides and the fatty acids
they contain such as linoleic and oleic acids as well as
ceramides, lecithin and squalane. Borage seed oil in
particular contains a high percentage of gamma
linoleic acid. This acid strengthens the skin barrier,
thereby increasing the skin’s elasticity and reducing
moisture loss. Paired with moisturizers like urea,
panthenol or glycerin, it can restore a smooth and
even appearance to dry skin when used for
an extended period of time. If you have dry skin, avoid
aggressive soaps, exfoliants and facial toners
containing alcohol. Body oils with essential oils such
as mint or eucalyptus are not good for dry skin either.
The skin can only fulfill its protective role again when
it is supplied with enough of the rightconditioning
substances, a vitamin-rich diet and anti-stress
treatments.
