In all cases the user is the one who selects the requirements for the building’s availability. These requirements are in turn based on the potential damage if the building supply fails partially or completely. Damage to systems of the technical building equipment is only part of the problem; the consequential damage due to production failure, etc. is usually more serious. Safeguarding the constant availability of all technical systems within a building is therefore one of the main tasks of technical facility management. The top priority is: To avoid system failure in order to safeguard the business or production processes of the facility users. Unfortunately, there is no general answer to this question. Are we talking about simple office buildings, or complex buildings with high-quality technology, hospitals with operating theatres, buildings with manufacturing or production facilities, or highly complex locations for technical rooms or data centres? This requires, among other things, a system concept which has been adapted to user requirements. Experience gained from thousands of buildings has proven to facility management service providers that sufficient transparency of the building systems is the only way to ensure the safe and secure operation. In case of a fault, it is only possible to react in a targeted manner if the location and type of problem can be recognized quickly and efficiently. For many years BACnet ISO 16484 has been the unrivalled standard at management level, ensuring the necessary communication between devices. This applies both to communication between the trades and to higher-level systems. Experience has also shown that in addition to building availability, full conformity to the BACnet standard – with regard to maintenance and operating costs as well as extensions or renovation work – is a major advantage. I am delighted that the topic of building availability has been included in this edition of the BACnet Journal as this year also marks the 10th anniversary of BACnet as an ISO standard. I hope you enjoy reading the various interesting articles. What Does Reliable Building Operation Mean to You? A high level of information content, used to realize reliable building operation, is generated by integrating all the technical trades of a modern building into the building automation. System integration via the BACnet communication protocol allows the integration of numerous devices from various manufacturers and trades into the BACnet network. The system integrator can therefore access a holistic information network of data points for coordination and utilization. BACnet management stations capture the consumption data of all the media as well as measured, target and actual temperature values, air quality, etc. This ensures that statistics on energy consumption can be provided in an open and transparent fashion together with trends and historical data. “The system integrator can access a holistic information network of data points for coordination and utilization.” Die Redaktion des BACnet Europe Journals hat sich bei Planern, Betreibern und Systemintegratoren umgehört. The editors of the BACnet Europe Journal have surveyed planners, operators and system integrators. The requirements for reliable building operation must be set out during the planning and deployment phase. The experience of the future operator can be instructive and is desirable here. Particular focus must be placed on the building control systems from the very start. This is where all the key information on operating statuses, possible deviations, and faults are recorded and visualized. An extensive operational concept describes all the interfaces and processes (e.g. fault management) and defines clear responsibilities. “Particular focus must be placed on the building control systems from the very start.” Trade-spanning functions complete and enhance reliable building operation. Users or operators benefit from a fully controllable building thanks to readily identifiable and quantifiable solutions.” The sustainable evaluation of faults as well as the recording and historicization of key operating parameters and energy consumption have grown in importance over recent years. All of these data provide users or owners with a transparent basis to measure the efficiency and availability of the property.” Franz Gerhard Stuckmann BACnet Systemintegrator | BACnet System Integrator SWG Stuckmann Wirtschaftliche Gebäudesysteme GmbH Edgar Harms Leiter Rechenzentren | Data Centers Manager STRABAG Property and Facility Services GmbH Zentrale 6 BACnet Europe Journal 19 10/13 Survey in view of the BACnet booth light+building 2014 „Zuverlässiger Gebäudebetrieb bedeutet, dass man alle Gewerke unter einen Hut bringt und dafür zuverlässige Tools hat. The necessary system integration occurs at various levels – with BACnet, LonWorks, Konnex, Dali, ModBus at field level, BACnet / IP as the core technology, and XML services, CSV file interfaces, etc. as the link to energy controlling and facility management systems. “Reliable building operation means that all the required trades are put under one roof and dependable tools are available.” The BACnet management control station, which at least corresponds to the AWS profile, ensures operative energy and emergency management. Daily tasks, such as editing schedules, configuring trend and event logs, specifying message texts, and analyzing networks, must be supported in a productive manner. A well-conceived visualization solution is required to react quickly and reliably in stressful situations. Logical navigation, clear and standardized color coding with DIN icons and plausible operating interfaces are essential. Programming tools must be available for all building controllers or controllers with strategic program sequences, and respective members of staff must be trained accordingly. Field devices and components must be purchased together with binding and configuration tools.” The answer to the question of ‘what is reliable building operation’ obviously varies depending upon the observer’s point of view. It should be remembered that investors, planners, users, operators, and owners do not always have the same interests. In fact, they are sometimes completely the opposite: Users want it to be ‘nice and warm’ in the winter, while operators aim to operate the building with the lowest possible heating costs. In this case, it would be an ideal situation if, for instance, a room temperature of 22°C could be verified through building automation controlled measurements. “Ideally, reliable building operation is provided when users do not realize and recognize the technologies involved.” From a planner’s point of view, reliable building operation is provided when the installed systems work efficiently and effectively, while meeting the user’s needs and constraints. Energy efficiency, trouble-free operation as well as reliable data and fault management are also key factors in this process. Ideally, reliable building operation is provided when users do not realize and recognize the technologies involved.” Dipl.-Ing. The market expects all control systems to comply with the BACnet standard. In order to increasingly link building automation to industrial automation, BIG-EU has been cooperating with the OPC Foundation for the past year. Matthias Damm, OPC representative and founder of ascolab GmbH, manages the working group on BACnet / OPC UA (Unified Architecture) Mapping together with Frank Schubert, BIG-EU advisory board member. BIG-EU press officer Bruno Kloubert asked Matthias Damm about the development status and benefits of mapping. E-Mail: [email protected] W hat is the actual goal of the working group? The current classic OPC gateways lose information and are not standardized. The new standard OPC UA offers great potential for improvement in this situation. Through BACnet / OPC UA Mapping we wish to optimize the flow of data between building and industrial automation. It is our goal to map information without any loss whatsoever. However, we do not actually wish to alter the BACnet and OPC UA standards themselves. Will the building automation be linked to SAP systems? Yes. As the SAP system provides an OPC UA client in its integration platform for process data, it is also possible to process data from building information via BACnet / OPC UA Mapping. Does the flow of information also work in the opposite direction? Via OPC UA, it is also possible to import data back into a BACnet system. The exchange between Matthias Damm The engineer graduate is the founder and managing director of ascolab GmbH and has more than 15 years of experience in OPC. He is currently active as an advisor for product manufacturers when integrating the new standard OPC UA. Before founding ascolab GmbH, he was the manager of an OPC developer team at Siemens. As one of the founding members of the OPC UA working group, he is the editor of the OPC UA service specification. Besides the BACnet / OPC UA working group, he is also the editor or working group manager of further mapping working groups, including PLCopen or OPC UA for Devices. E-mail: [email protected] industrial and building automation systems should actually work in both directions. tion appears to be a natural concept. Our mapping will generate new impulses in this direction. Who profits from this lossless data exchange? Operators will profit first and foremost. BACnet already plays a fundamental role in their building management. OPC-based tools which are intended to access the data of building automation are nonetheless used in heterogeneous systems. What will change for industrial and building automation? The interface of control systems of industrial and building automation is still a weak point today. Although industry proven systems are applied, which collect data via OPC UA and provide them to the control system, they do not integrate building automation in an optimum fashion. In the future, the interface definition will ensure that it also meets the latest energy and product management requirements. Production parameters, such as temperature or humidity, are increasingly specified and documented. Our cooperation will create the basis for increasing interaction between building and industrial automation. If the control system focuses on industrial automation or IT integration takes place via OPC UA, the mix is even greater. OPC UA can then integrate the building automation without any loss whatsoever. Schedule and calendar objects can then be integrated without proprietary extensions. Where can the greatest potentials for integration be found? I do not believe there are actual main areas. I would say every area offers potential. As each automation system is part of a building, integra- Regardless of whether it is chemistry or electronics manufacturing – the ambient parameters must be communicated accurately in the systems; only then can everyone involved benefit from the process. After three face-to-face meetings and countless telephone conferences the OPC/BACnet working group of the two organizations OPC Foundation and B ACnet Interest Group Europe started finalizing the first draft of the mapping specifications in a meeting in July 2013 in Krefeld. So verwendet OPC-UA z. Die Arbeitsgruppe ist über ihre beiden Leiter, Matthias Damm von der ascolab GmbH und Frank Schubert von der MBS GmbH erreichbar: [email protected] [email protected] T he first step is to specify the mapping of B ACnet objects and services from a B ACnet network to OPC UA, for example to connect to Enterprise systems. In the next step the working group will specify possibilities to connect OPC UA components to B ACnet networks. The challenge for the working group was and still is to combine the different methods, data-types and communication. The object-oriented structures from OPC UA (inheritance, multi-instancing, etc.) will be used. The following picture shows, as an example, the basic data-model which is used by the mapping schema. (Picture 1) However, on this way several obstacles still have to be overcome. OPC for example uses a list of more than 1,000 engineering units taken from a table specified by the United Nations. The approach to find the approximately 200 B ACnet engineering units easily in this list did not work well. Even in the large list of the UN there are still a few units, which are defined for B ACnet, are missing, and vice versa there are a lot more units in OPC wich are still missing in B ACnet. To map the very flexible and complex datatypes from BACnet (like the content of schedule objects) it was required to extend the OPC UA specifications. This was not expected at the beginning of this project. Public review planned There will be a public review of the mapping document like for addenda in the B ACnet standard. Interested parties are able to comment the specifications or start evaluating them before they finally will be approved. High availability in technical facilities, data centres, in office schemes and commercial properties is one of the services provided by Strabag Property and Facilitiy Services GmbH (Strabag PFS). Relying on the BACnet standard, the company successfully operates a nationwide management system. High availability, as in this data centre in Munich, is a must requirement. T he management of technical facilities is a specialized FM service that requires a high degree of networking between trades and systems. Particularly when it comes to properties with complex technical equipment, high availability of the energy supply plays a key role. It can be guaranteed only if the managed facilities are centrally and transparently monitored in order to ensure a quick and dedicated response in the event of a disturbance. More than six million events annually are received in two redundant fault management centres in Nuremberg and Leipzig respectively, where specially trained professionals screen the incoming reports and data on a 24/7 basis, evaluating them and, in the case of a disturbance, immediately despatching service technicians to remedy the emergent issues directly on location. System operation in data centres Strabag PFS manages more than 8,000 technical facilities, 39 data centres, and nearly 10,000 sites, including their networked access control. Strabag PFS has deployed a state-of-the-art building automation and operational information system that involves several tiers and expandable modules, which in its final version of the first project stage will cover up to 1,500,000 data points. The system runs in highly available data centres. The application of high IT security standards protects all system levels against third-party interference. All signals are forwarded, together with reports from other systems, to the so-called SAP Eventmonitor of the incident management centre, where they are displayed as drilldown according to trade and site priorities. Processing in the next step may include additional information, such as order data, more property details, and service level agreements. Especially during times of high signal flows, which can occur, for example, by heat waves or thunderstorms, this ensures a consistently high level of clarity and facilitates In order to keep the processing of the large information volumes simple, a uniform data-point address key is intelligently interpreted by the system, enabling the user to obtain a systemgenerated chart on any given system. Based the imported items, the system recognizes which components need to be graphically represented, and automatically generates the chart for the respective system. As early as the planning phase, all equipment vendors are given the relevant information together with the system data sheet that lists all BACnet data required for the system startup. This lets you map even large properties and property portfolios with BACnet devices of different makes in the new management system in a convenient, structured way. Existing BACnet structures may also be integrated into the legacy system programming without intervention. An extensive engineering tool was custom-developed for this purpose. The AEE (Advanced Engineering Explorer) can be used to load BACnet and other protocols (e.g. SNMP, IEC 60870-5104, OPC, etc.), and data (e.g. names of additional assets) may still be imported into the database even after loading. Summary The introduced system technology enables Strabag PFS to manage even the largest property portfolios while ensuring the highest availability (including in regard to energy optimization and load configuration) and transparency for the client. Both clients and Strabag PFS staff benefit from the advantages of the BACnet standard when setting up, overhauling and operating their systems. More than seventy buildings on the site contain building management systems and technical installations from several manufacturers and generations. In order to update these installations and to simplify management, the contractor Wolter & Dros and Priva Integration Partner IHCS were appointed. The aim of the project was to update part of the existing installations, and to add an overarching application to enable all the technical installations to be managed and monitored from one dashboard. In addition, existing installations were upgraded to newer IP standards. Communication via BACnet and IP As a number of existing substations could not communicate via IP, these were replaced with Priva Compri HX8 controllers and a central Compri HX BACnet router was put in place. In addition, Network Control Engines have been added to the existing Johnson Controls DX controllers. Wago PLCs have been installed in a number of smaller buildings on the site. Integrating several systems Visualization for more overview Priva Partner IHCS was involved in the project thanks to its knowledge of system integration and the Priva Top Integration platform. What is more, the experience with both the building management system from Priva and Johnson Controls came in handy, because both systems applied to the open air museum. The choice for Priva Top Integration was logical. A part of the current systems was already based on Priva, and Top Integration is able to communicate with controllers and field devices from any manufacturer via the open BACnet protocol. Top Integration is one of the first integration platforms in the world to be certified as BACnet Advanced Workstation Software (B-AWS) and as an OPC UA server/client. All of the present buildings and installations on the site are now being displayed in Top Integration. From the central dashboard with the overview of the site, the museum building manager can zoom in on the installations in the buildings and manage these directly. B. The Palace of Justice was certified with the “Environmental Assessment Method” of the Building Research Establishment organization (BREEAM). rewiring when changing the room division is now a thing of the past. Therefore, the ecos 5 system provides an intelligent solution for intelligent, flexible rooms. Sauter Nederland implemented this challenging project and was once again able to reap the benefits of the open BACnet / IP bus protocol. The seamless integration of the DALI lighting and DALI multiple sensors for recording the room occupancy and brightness already impressed in the planning phase (DALI = Digital Addressable Lighting Interface). An integrated solution Bi-directional technology For the building and room automation, Sauter turned to the EY-modulo 5 family of systems: For the building automation system, the modu525 automation station was used, and for the room automation, room automation stations of the ecos 5 type with EnOcean wireless technology. novaPro Open was chosen as the building management system for monitoring and controlling the entire installation. Connecting the access control system to the building management increases the energy efficiency, supports the security concept and activates the lighting outside the normal office hours if required. Full flexibility for room utilization Almost the entire building is designed as an open space area, with rooms organized flexibly by means of glass partitions. The integrated room automation with ecos 5 is based on individual room segments with all the functions of the room climate and the lighting. In the building management system, these room segments are individually grouped into rooms. Reprogramming or even With flexible room division, the number of room operating units and their places of installation are also variable. This is made possible by using Sauter’s wireless room operation unit, ecoUnit 1, based on the EnOcean standard. The integrated solar panel harvests the energy, ensuring that neither cables nor batteries are required. Therefore, installation on glass walls is no problem either. This room unit is distinguished by its unique bidirectional communication based on the international EnOcean standard. The room temperature and operating activities, such as dimming / switching off lights, are transferred to the room automation station, and conversely the users can read the target room temperature and information on the heating and cooling from the display of the room unit at any time. Consequently, the users have more information which contributes to the energy optimization of the rooms. The sustainability of this building is reflected in the building automation through the open, flexible modulo 5 system, which is ideally equipped for future requirements for the utilization of the building. F or the production of its highly wear resistant tools and components for steel and metal recycling and the crushing of mineral resources, hard rock and construction remnants, Stahlwerke Bochum GmbH (SWB) attaches great importance to environmental protection, for example by only using environmentally friendly coatings. This worthy principle is also reflected in the field of energy consumption. Strict implementation of standard DIN EN ISO 50001 has been certified. What does DIN EN ISO 50001 stand for? This standard defines the specifications for systematic energy management. In Germany, the application and implementation of processes to this standard is basically voluntary, but grants particularly energy intensive companies partial exemption from the German Renewable Energy Law levy and future relief from the electricity and energy tax. The introduction of an energy management system and CIP (continuous improvement process) ensures the permanent monitoring of energy consumption and the immediate detection of any deviations. Similar to ISO 9001 management systems, the implementation and continuous application of DIN EN ISO 50001 can be certified by accredited inspection authorities. Support for energy data management Consumption data is required as process monitoring input parameters in order to determine the actual status. As this is a continuous process, consumption data must be recorded at regular intervals. Electronic meters which can regularly provide the values via communication protocols when requested by the management system are recommendable for this task. SWB uses “Energy///Saver®”, produced by the German company MBS, to communicate with the connected systems and to provide the management system with meter data. In this particular case, the standardized M-Bus protocol is used for the 40 electricity meters. The consumption data can be displayed or further processed using a simple internet browser or BACnet. By displaying consumption values as trend curves, it is possible to monitor and control the development of energy consumption. Moreover, the values of all the connected meters can be shown in a clearly structured system presentation. Values can also be exported to Office programs, such as Excel, for further processing, long-term storage and a comparison with other time periods, for example. Operating staff are informed in good time of any problems thanks to limit values which indicate when the specified values are exceeded. Conclusion For many years, SWB has been focusing on the economic use of raw materials and the application of sustainable measures, such as heat recovery and the return and recycling of disused wear parts. Thanks to the new energy management system, supported by MBS communication technology, production processes at SWB are now more sustainable than ever. The latter not only regulates the generation of heat, it can simultaneously communicate with LON and BACnet. The converted messages are sent to the BACnet building automation and requests are passed to the single room controller, resulting in an energy efficient power supply for the heating system. All such merged information is passed through a router to the building management system in the District Office. There, amongst other things, trends and comparisons are performed and influences evaluated, time flow is analyzed and, using the software energy management system from Kieback&Peter, plant operation is continuously optimized. Distributed fan plus central control In Oranienburg, iSAtech GmbH for the first time showed that the advantages of decentralized ventilation with heat recovery were directly related to using a central controller via BACnet. Therefore demonstrating that a simultaneous and decentralized cross-system climate control for buildings and properties is possible. Fans can be installed with low construction costs in every room, thus allowing for the necessary expansion of a ventilation concept. The fan with heat recovery reduces heating costs and CO2 emissions and provides a lowcost and low-energy consumption house. They offer active protection against moisture damage and mold growth. In addition, they allow ventilation without interference from external noise, an advantage not to be underestimated, for example, in the vicinity of airports. Open standard is the key The project shows how system integration makes it possible to operate buildings more energy-efficiently and as environmentally friendly as possible. Except for a competent system integrator who understands how to create a comprehensive system from various individual systems, a suitable communication protocol is necessary. The BACnet open standard ensures interoperability of equipment from different manufacturers thereby making extensive integration possible. I n May, the ASHRAE SSPC 135 BACnet Committee met in San Francisco at the Pacific Energy Center, a venue belonging to PG&E. The meeting room sponsored by PG&E, was a good fit, as it usually serves as a training classroom for HVAC controls. In June, as part of the ASHRAE Annual Conference, the committee met again in Denver, CO. While the committee assembled in San Francisco, the public review of a number of addenda was still ongoing. Thus, many working groups were focusing on the preparation of addenda for public review that did not make it into the spring review cycle. In addition to this, a lot of work was done to catch up with test specifications for functionality recently added to the BACnet standard. The work on enhanced support of web and Internet technologies was ongoing in San Francisco in several working groups. The hot topics being worked on are the new RESTful BACnet web services, the extended BACnet data model (BACnet XD), and Internet application protocol based transport bindings. The plan was to ship the RESTful Web Services for public review in Denver. Along with this, the committee started planning on a respective web services plugfest. A call for companies that would be willing to participate with early implementations was placed. In Denver, a lot of work was involved on comment resolution and revision of addenda drafts that were in public review this spring. Most of these addenda were prepared for the next review or publication. The work on the RESTful Web Services (Addendum 135-2012am) was ongoing, but it was clear that there was not enough time to bring this forward for public review in Denver. The Data Modelling Working Group concentrated on the proposal for enabling BACnet XD for classic devices. This proposal was finally approved for public review as Addendum 1352012ba. It is, together with 135-2012am, part of a series of addenda which will bring BACnet forward into the world of IT, Web and Internet technologies and the Internet of Things. The RESTful Web Services addendum will be brought forward off-meeting, in teleconferences. It is planned to make it ready for public review later this summer. BACnet Insight RESTful web services plugfest As noted earlier, the committee plans for a plugfest for the new RESTful BACnet web services. In Denver, a larger number of smaller and bigger BACnet companies announced their support and participation with early implementations based on the upcoming public review draft addendum 1352012am. The plugfest will not only serve to verify interoperation of implementations, but will also help to increase public attention of the very powerful and comprehensive RESTful web services and the web-accessible extended data model for building automation and control systems. These new features will significantly facilitate and simplify the integration of building automation in building management, enterprise and Smart Grid applications. had to be completed by a continuation letter ballot after the meeting. The addenda approved for public review were: Addendum 135-2012an PPR1 MSTP Large Frames Addendum 135-2012aq PPR2 Elevator Monitoring, COV Multiple Reporting Addendum 135-2012aw PPR2 Alarming Revision Complements Addendum 135-2012ax PPR1 Miscellaneous Changes Addendum 135-2012ay PPR1 Timer Object Type Addendum 135-2012az PPR1 Binary Lighting Object Type Addendum 135-2012ba PPR1 BACnet XD for Classic Devices Addenda completed In the recent meetings, a number of addenda were completed. Some did not receive comments at all in the public review, while others received comments that required editorial changes only. The following addenda will undergo ASHRAE approval and publication in the next few months: Addendum 135-2012al Gateway Best Practices, New BIBBs and Device Profiles Addendum 135-2012at Interface_Value Property for Input and Output Objects Addendum 135-2012au Clarifications of Authentication Factor Encodings, and of Coercion Requirements for WriteGroup Service Addendum 135-2012av Server-side GetAlarmSummary and GetEnrollmentSummary Service Support Relaxations The protocol revision of these addenda will be determined, but will likely be a revision higher than 15. Also worthy of notice is that Addendum 1352012ar, Miscellaneous Changes, was finally published shortly after the Denver meeting. It was also announced that the test standard addenda 135.1-2011l and -n are on their way to being published correctly as addenda to 135.1-2011. Addenda approved for public review In San Francisco and Denver, a number of addenda to 135-2012 were approved for initial or subsequent public review, although the poll Addendum 135-2012an adds large frames to MS / TP and enables MS / TP to transport foreign messages, such as IPv6 frames. Addendum 1352012aq, Elevator Monitoring in BACnet and COV Multiple Reporting, received a larger overhaul after its first public review, and was made ready by the Objects & Services Working Group for its second public review. Addendum 135-2012aw, after its first public review, was extended to allow the new fault algorithm Fault-Out-Of-Range to be applied to all numeric value objects. The first three addenda of the list above had already been seen by the public in a previous review. The last four addenda in the list are new addenda and will be out for public review for the first time. Addendum 135-2012ax proposes a number of smaller changes and clarifications. Addendum 135-2012ay proposes a new Timer object type. A Timer object represents a countdown timer, which may produce event notifications and perform write operations on changes of its status. It will support various applications that have a need for network visible time countdown, respective status change indication and notification, as well as configurable write operations on change of status. This complements the Schedule object with write operations at times relative to the current time. Addendum 1352012az introduces a new Binary Lighting Output object type. This new object type is derived from the Binary Output object, but selectively enhanced to represent functionality and features of a binary lamp, including support for a blink warning mechanism. Addendum 135-2012ba, as mentioned before, enables classic BACnet devices to contain or refer to a static description in XML of its capabilities. These descriptions are enabled to even use some concepts from BACnet XD. The test standard addendum 135.1-2011o was approved a while ago for its first public review, but the public review was delayed since it adds tests related to extensions specified in addendum 135-2012ar. That addendum is now published, so 135.1-2011o can go into its first public review now. Addendum 135.1-2011o PPR1 SubscribeCOVProperty Error Tests Other addenda in the works Addendum 135-2012ai, Network Port object type, was in another public review early this year. Work is ongoing by the Internet Protocol Working Group to address information security concerns raised by commenters. Addendum 135-2012aj, Support of IPv6, has also undergone several public reviews. Its functionality is currently being completed and the changes to the Network Port object required for IPv6 are being defined. Also, comments brought up by Swisscom, a leading IPv6 ISP and IT company in Switzerland, will be incorporated. Addendum 135-2012am, BACnet RESTful Web services, is in work by the Data Modelling Working Group. More details on this can be found previously in this article. Addendum 135-2012ap, Application Interfaces methodology and infrastructure, is currently on hold. The Applications Working Group is awaiting directions from the BACnet XD discussion before preparing a draft for the next public review. Addendum 135-2012as, Command Source Information, went through the first public review this spring. This addendum will undergo some substantial changes, related to coordination and alignment with an audit log model proposal in work at the Network Security Working Group. The Institute of Electrical Installation Engineers of Japan (IEIEJ), which is the original proposer of this addendum, is currently reviewing the proposed changes. The MS /TP statistics web page immediately gives notice of the current condition of the MS / TP token, shows an MS / TP bus history across the last minute and offers an indication stating the communication quality or “health” represented by a value range of 0 – 100 percent. The higher the percentage, the better MS/TP communication is running between the devices on the bus. BACnet MS / TP analysis using remote-packet recording If the statistic evaluation of the MS / TP channel doesn’t help to locate the problem, remote packet recording is the method of choice. The devices can capture all the data traffic on the BACnet MS/TP channel. Wireshark (www.wireshark.org) can be used for analyzing the captured packets in detail either online or offline. I n numerous practical exercises using devices from different manufacturers, a deeper understanding of the theoretical knowledge is acquired in the DIAL training laboratory. The training concept of this seminar is explained below. Planning The practical exercises within the planning module of the seminar include the evaluation of PICS (Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement). Here the task is to assess the interoperability of BACnet devices by comparing the BIBBS ( BACnet Interoperability Building Blocks). System integration This module consists of several tasks. First of all the BACnet / IP and BACnet / MS-TP devices must be wired and addressed. After this step the BACnet / IP devices are visible in the BACnet browser, but not the BACnet / MS-TP components. This requires configuration of the BACnet router. The next task for the participants is to experiment on their system with the functions of the basic BACnet object types such as “Device” and “Binary output”. Tests are also made with complex BACnet objects such as “Schedule” for time schedules. BACnet services comprise another important aspect of the seminar. Particular attention is paid to practising the set up of COV (Change of Value) and dealing with alarms and also Intrinsic and Algorithmic Reporting. These exercises are completed by connecting BACnet to DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) via a Gateway. Simplified system integration with the new WAGO BACnet controller (750-831). The BACnet controller (750-831) is equipped with two ETHERNET ports, an SD slot and an address switch. A number of different protocols exist in building engineering, and in large-scale projects in particular individual disciplines often develop independently of one another. The new BACnet controller (750-831) from WAGO seamlessly integrates technology islands with different protocols, such as LON or DALI into one system. This helps reduce building automation complexity, along with the effort and costs involved for installation and maintenance. Less configuration required Freely programmable BACnet controller The freely programmable BACnet controller based on IEC 61131-3 is a “BACnet-Building Controller” (B-BC) device type. Compared to its predecessor (750-830), the available program memory of this new controller is twice as large, while data storage was increased four-fold. At the same time, this new controller supports SD card functionality, meaning that data such as the “Trend Log” object can be archived externally. Besides this, there is more space available for Web visualization when an SD card is used. An ETHERNET line topology can also be set up using the 2-port switch integrated into the controller. In the so-called native mode, the BACnet controller automatically generates compatible BACnet objects for the digital and analog hardware data points of all the I/O modules to which it is linked. The benefits: The controller is immediately ready for operation once an IP address has been assigned via the address switch. This feature reduces the configuration effort required, which can be considerable for complex systems. A unified interface which illustrates Smart Grid / Smart Metering requirements on devices and applications in building automation is to be developed in a common working group. For BIG-EU Executive Board member Karl-Heinz Belser, the agreement represents a new quality for the user: “Through the cooperation with the EEBus Initiative, we open up the access of commercial buildings to the Smart Grid. Hence, buildings will be able to adjust dynamically to the fluctuating supply situation, caused by volatile sun and wind energy. Energy storage is forecast controlled and the available energy is supplied optimally. In the buildings, BACnet is specifically suited to consolidate the information out of the technical building equipment.” The communication standard plays a fundamental role in continuous availability. It integrates heterogeneous trades in a homogeneous environment, resulting in transparency and safety. As a safe link in the fault management process, BACnet is an inherent part of the system concept. Practical application has also shown that BACnet ensures the required transparency in building control systems. The standard is therefore a key to safe operation. The BIG-EU is looking for interested parties who want to take part on the organizations’ joint stand at SECURITY ESSEN 2014. BACnet has huge potential for safety and security technology. The goal is the integration of various security systems within a common control system. For this reason, the expert group “BACnet in the German Market” is advocating joint development and concerted action. In this group, representatives of local government and public administration (AMEV – German Working Group for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering) and developers and users of the BACnet standards hold open meetings to co-ordinate their requirements with the latest technological developments. It is necessary to look at this technology in two areas. On the one hand, the requirements of data security are rising together with the spread of smart grids (security) and on the other, users lack integrated solutions in alarm systems and fire detection (life safety). The BACnet standard covers two types of life safety objects. One of these, the “Life Safety Point Object”, covers the areas of fire, safety and protection. Applications can encompass automatic fire detectors, sirens and fire alarms (pull stations). The BACnet test plan will also include life safety tests, which means certificates of conformity also cover safety and security technology. – 26. September zum 40. Mal statt.
