A. GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Students must take the exam only during the regularly scheduled time. Refer to your course
calendar for the specific date of the exam.
2. This exam will include the following components: (1) Speaking, (2) Listening Comprehension,
(3) Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary, (4) Cultural Information, and (5) Writing. Each of
these components is worth 20%.
3. For Exam 2, students are to review Capítulos 3-5 in the textbook, Dos mundos (7th edition), and
the workbook, Cuaderno de actividades (CA).
B. GENERAL FORMAT OF EXAM 1
1. SPEAKING (20%)
This part of the exam typically consists of a series of questions based on the material covered in
Capítulos 3-5. In the actual test, your instructor will choose 10 of the 20 questions listed in section C
of this study guide. The instructor will ask each question in Spanish twice, at a slow, conversational
speed. After the question is repeated, students will have ten seconds to answer it in Spanish. This
part will be evaluated based on content, comprehensibility, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and
grammar. For full credit, you must answer the question that you are being asked, so make sure that
you understand correctly what the question is asking before you answer it. Also, you must answer in
complete sentences that are grammatically correct and comprehensible.
2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION (20%)
To prepare for this part, take advantage of all activities found in the Dos mundos program (textbook
and Cuaderno de actividades). In particular, review the sections called Actividades auditivas
(Listening Comprehension Activities) in Capítulos 3-5 in the CA. In this section of the exam, your
instructor will include 2-3 listening passages from your workbook (Caps. 3-5) and/or from other
sources. Although some of the listening passages may be the same as those found in the workbook,
the questions may be modified. The format will include true or false (and correction of the false
statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer, multiple choice and/or one of the other formats found in
the Actividades auditivas.
3. READING COMPREHENSION AND VOCABULARY (20%)
To prepare for the reading comprehension section of the exam, read and understand all of the
passages in the textbook and the workbook (Caps. 3-5). To prepare for the vocabulary section, also
review the vocabulary used in the Actividades de comunicación and at the end of each chapter.
Formats to be used in testing reading comprehension skills will include true or false (and correction
of the false statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and/or multiple choice. To test the
vocabulary, multiple choice will be used.

4. CULTURAL INFORMATION (20%)
The textbook Dos mundos offers a wide variety of readings and cultural materials in every chapter. The
cultural information appears particularly in the sections Ventanas culturales (windows into the cultures
and societies of the Hispanic world), Ventanas al pasado (readings about the social, cultural, and/or
political history of the Spanish-speaking world), Enlace a la literatura / a la música / al cine (short
readings about Hispanic literature, music, and cinema), Lecturas (readings on a variety of topics, such as
sports, leisure activities, regional foods, and interesting cities or regions of the Spanish-speaking world),
and Vida y cultura (readings about a variety of cultural phenomena). The section “¡Conozca...!” includes
a brief overview of a specific Hispanic country. The “¡Ojo!” section contains brief descriptions of
customs and important insights into the Hispanic world. In the Resumen cultural section in the workbook,
as well as in supplementary exercises in the textbook, students will find written exercises to verify their
knowledge and understanding of Hispanic cultures. The formats used for testing this part of the exam will
include true or false (and correction of the false statements), fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and/or
multiple choice. This part of the exam will be based on the cultural worksheets in section D of this study
guide. The questions on the cultural worksheet will be similar to the ones on the exam, but not
necessarily exactly the same as those that appear on the exam.
5. WRITING (20%)
In this section of the exam, students will write one short composition of a minimum of ten sentences on a
given topic. The composition will be evaluated for its grammar, vocabulary, content (for full credit, all of
the questions and ideas in the writing prompt must be addressed), length, and organization. To prepare for
the composition, take advantage of all the Actividades escritas (written activities found in the CA), other
writing exercises (Tareas), and the four composition topics below. The day of the exam, students will be
given two of the four topics listed below, and they will write a composition of at least 10 sentences about
one of them.
Some topics for practice:
1. Mi rutina de los sábados. Escriba un párrafo de 10 oraciones o más sobre su rutina de los
sábados. Utilice por lo menos (at least) 4 verbos reflexivos. Incluya información sobre lo que hace
por la mañana, por la tarde y por la noche. ¿Qué le gusta comer para el desayuno, el almuerzo y la
cena?
2. Mis planes para el próximo día feriado. Escriba un párrafo de 10 oraciones o más sobre sus
planes para el próximo día feriado. ¿Cómo se llama ese día feriado? ¿En qué fecha se celebra?
¿Adónde quiere ir? ¿Con quién(es) va a pasar ese día? ¿Generalmente qué cosas hace ese día?
3. Mi trabajo actual. Escriba una composición de 10 oraciones o más sobre el trabajo que tiene
actualmente (currently) o sobre su trabajo ideal. ¿Qué tiene que hacer en ese trabajo? ¿A qué hora
entra y a qué hora sale? ¿Le gusta su trabajo? ¿Por qué? ¿Cuáles son algunos aspectos positivos y
negativos de su trabajo? ¿Es bueno el sueldo? ¿Es simpático/a su jefe/a?
4. Mis planes del futuro. Escriba una composición de 10 oraciones o más sobre sus planes y
deseos. ¿Qué quiere hacer después de graduarse? ¿Tiene ganas de descansar antes de buscar empleo?
¿Piensa mudarse (to move) a otra ciudad o estado? ¿Le gustaría viajar? ¿Qué otras cosas piensa
hacer?
