Conference Program - Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft eV
German Zoological Society 105th Annual Meeting
Conference Program
September 21 – 24, 2012
University of Konstanz, Germany
Welcome
Sponsored by
Welcome
Dear Friends of the Zoological Sciences!
At a Glanc
Welcome to Konstanz, to the 105th annual meeting of the German Zoological
Society (Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft, DZG) – it is a great pleasure and
an honor to have you here as our guests!
We are delighted to have presentations of the best and most recent research in
Zoology from Germany. The emphasis this year is on evolutionary biology and
neurobiology, reflecting the research foci the host laboratories from the University of Konstanz, but, as every year, all Fachgruppen of our society are represented – and this promises to be a lively, diverse and interesting conference. You
will recognize the standard schedule of our yearly DZG meetings: invited talks
by the Fachgruppen, oral presentations organized by the Fachgruppen, keynote
speakers for all to be inspired by, and plenty of time and space to meet and
discuss in front of posters. This year we were able to attract a particularly large
number of keynote speakers from all over the world. Furthermore, this year we
have added something new to the DZG meeting: timely symposia about genomics, olfaction, and about Daphnia as a model in ecology and evolution. Also,
a symposium entirely organized by the PhD-Students of our International Max
Planck Research School “Organismal Biology” complements the program.
We hope that you will have a chance also to take advantage of the touristic
offerings of beautiful Konstanz and the Bodensee. The lake is clean and in most
places it is easily accessed for a swim, so don’t forget to bring your swim suits. A
record turnout of almost 600 participants who have registered for this year’s DZG
meeting is a testament both to the attractiveness of Konstanz for scientific and
touristic reasons alike. Our hope is that this year’s DZG meeting will contribute to
a further strengthening of the scientific standing of Zoology in Germany. We also
hope that this conference will provide an opportunity in particular for young scientist to showcase their best research not only nationally, but also internationally.
We would like to thank the sponsors for their valuable financial contributions,
the DZG and in particular Sabine Giessler for help in organizing this event. The
University of Konstanz provided substantial support in various forms without
which this meeting would not have been possible - this is much appreciated.
In particular, we would like to thank Mrs. Anne Zitzelsberger from our “events
management” for her commitment and skills in organizing this meeting.
As local organizers we are glad to have you here, and we are looking forward to
four days of excellent science! We hope that you will enjoy your stay in Konstanz
and that you will be stimulated by the exciting research that you will be able to
hear and see at this year’s meeting of the Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft.

City of Constance
With a population of over 80,000 inhabitants and a land area of 54 km² (encompassing a total of 15 city districts spanning both sides of the out-flowing Rhine)
Constance is the largest city on Lake Constance.
Situated in the very south of Germany, Constance shares its border with the Swiss
neighbouring city of Kreuzlingen.
Keynote
Boasting a 34 km long city shoreline, Constance charms and captivates both tourists and locals alike.
The city´s international flair and
more than 3,300 shops and businesses contribute to its reputation
as an attractive and appealing science and business location.

Port entry of Constance with the "Imperia"
Constance´s roots date back to
antiquity - traces of civilization dating back to the late Stone Age, Roman settlements around 50 AD, and an economically prosperous Middle Ages. But is was
from 1414-1418 with the `Council of Constance´ that the city gained fame. The
`Council´ brought an end to the Three-Popes Controversy and, with it, the election of Pope Martin V.
Prior to 1414, 6,000 people lived
in Constance. During the `Council
of Constance´ the number of inhabitants, many of whom themselves
council participants, soared to a
staggering 80,000.
Traditional hotels and well-known
taverns and guesthouses indulge
their guests year-round with culinary delights from the Lake Constance region, be it from lake or
Lake of Constance with the alps in the background land.
This lively university town makes attending a conference in Constance even that
much more interesting. Virtually all nooks and crannies of the city impart a sense of past-meets-present. A good example is the historic old town (Niederburg)
with its picturesque alleyways ideal for a meandering walkabout or a downtown
shopping spree.

Routed in the traditional “Arthropodenseminare”, the ANN meetings provide an
important platform for scientific exchange between the different laboratories working in the wide field of arthropod neurobiology in the German-speaking countries. Konstanz as venue is a fortunate choice for us given the strong neurobiological groups at Konstanz University that use arthropods as model organisms, as
well as the nice surroundings and the vicinity to Austria and Switzerland.

Species of the genus Daphnia have become important model organisms in biological research. Owing to their abundance in all kinds of standing water bodies around the globe and their high grazing activity on the phytoplankton they
provide a crucial link between primary and secondary production and thus are
considered as keystone species in freshwater food webs. Their high ecological
relevance combined with the fact that their biology is highly suitable for scientific experimentation (short life cycle, easy to maintain, clonal reproduction, etc.)
has led to a vast knowledge of their ecology. Daphnia species are intensively
used as models in various fields, such as ecophysiology (e.g. adaptation to pH
or temperature), chemical ecology (e.g. response to kairomones), ecotoxicology
(e.g. ability to cope with xenobiotics), nutritional ecology (e.g. requirements for
essential nutrients) and evolutionary research (e.g. population genetics, parasite – host interactions, phenotypic plasticity). The recently published genome of
Daphnia pulex, the first crustacean genome, has opened new avenues to explore
the genetic basis of environmentally induced physiological adaptation and has
considerably stimulated Daphnia research. With this session, we aim to highlight
recent advances and new perspectives of Daphnia research.
We hope to attract biologist of all fields using Daphnia as a model in their own
research. We aim to create an inspiring gathering of fellow scientists, thereby
providing insights in recent advances and new perspectives of Daphnia research,
but also want to bring the Daphnia model closer to more terrestrial-oriented
biologist.

Through the advent of next-generation DNA sequencing technologies it has now
become feasible to query the genomes also of ecological rather than genetic model systems for adaptive genetic variation and to sequence even entire genomes.
The link between the phenotype and genotype is now in reach and we can begin
to explore the genetic basis of adaptive changes in organisms. It is now possible
to address also interesting questions about whether de novo mutations or standing genetic variation led to adaptive changes in the genomes of animals and
whether mutations in regulatory elements or in coding portions of protein-coding
genes play a predominant role more often during adaptive phenotypic changes.
