German 235 Course Outline
German 235 Course Outline
& The curriculum for German 2 is based on the Illinois Learning Standards and Benchmarks for Foreign
Languages with an emphasis on Goal 28 & 29 and ACTFL’s 5 Cs.
Goal 28: Use the target language to communicate within and beyond the classroom setting.
Goal 29: Use the target language to develop an understanding of the customs, arts, literature,
history and geography associated with the target language.
& Primary goal in the second year of instruction is to focus and on and familiarize students with the spoken
German language as outlined in the Illinois Learning Standards. Students will hear and speak German
from the first day of instruction and increasingly so as the year progresses. These communication skills
will be stressed and practiced every day. Building vocabulary will therefore be a regular task and students will be quizzed accordingly.
& Materials for conversational practice, reading and writing will be pulled from many resources available
in the classroom (library books, magazines, newspapers, online resources, videos, short stories and novels).
& Foreign Language teaching methods include TPR (Total Physical Response) and TPRS (Total Proficiency
through Reading & Storytelling). These are data driven teaching practices that promote fluency through
daily comprehensible input. Students are immersed in the language from the first day of instruction.
& Cultural, literary, historical, and geographical aspects of the target language will be taught throughout
the year, using video clips, newspapers, guest speakers, books, teacher’s experiences and family relations
in Germany, etc.
& The following is a monthly overview of grammatical structures and supplemental projects that will be
taught over the year:
