Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Grapefruitöl wird durch kalte Pressung der äußeren Fruchtschalen der Früchte des
Grapefruitbaumes (Citrus paradisi) gewonnen. In den äußeren, schwammartigen Schichten der Schale
sitzen kleine Bereiche, die das ätherische Öl speichern. Diese Ölkammern können leicht mechanisch
geöffnet und entleert werden. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des
ätherischen Öles und des in der Schale enthaltenen Wassers findet eine spontane Phasentrennung
statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die Ausbeute liegt zwischen 0.05
und 0.6%.[1,3]
Manufacturing method
The essential grapefruit oil is obtained by cold pressing of the outer peel of the fruit of the grapefruit tree
(Citrus paradisi). Small areas, which can accumulate the essential oil, are located in the outer spongy layers of
the peel. These oil chambers can be opened mechanically and drained. Due to the non-miscibility of the organic
compounds with water from the peel, the phases readily separate and the essential oil can be easily separated. The
yield of oil is between 0.05 and 0.6%.[1,3]
Botanischer Ursprung des Grapefruitöls
Die Art Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) gehört zur Gattung
Citrus in der Familie der Rautengewächse (Rutaceae), die
in der Ordnung Seifenbaumartige (Sapindales) steht. Die
Grapefruit ist durch die Kreuzung von Orange (Citrus
aurantium) und Pampelmuse (Citrus maxima) entstanden
und wird auch als Paradiesapfel, oder fälschlicherweise
als Pampelmuse bezeichnet. Wahrscheinlich ist die Art
auf den Westindischen Inseln (Barbados) durch eine
zufällige Kreuzung entstanden. Der immergrüne Baum
erreicht maximale Höhen von bis zu 15 m, wird im
Allgemeinen aber auf erntefreundlichen Höhen zwischen
fünf und sechs Metern gehalten. Junge Asttriebe haben
eine kantige Form. Die schmalen, ovalen Blätter werden
bis zu 15 cm lang und sind von dunkelgrüner Farbe. Die
Spitze ist stumpf und die Blattbasis ist abgerundet. Der Blattstiel ist stark verbreitert. Die stark
duftenden, weißen Blüten stehen in den Blattachseln. Die runde Frucht hat je nach Sorte eine gelbe
oder leicht rötlich gefärbte Schale. Die Frucht erreicht einen Durchmesser von bis zu 15 cm und hat ein

Botanical origin of essential grapefruit oil
The species grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) belongs to the genus Citrus in the rue family (Rutaceae), which is in the
order of soap-like trees (Sapindales). The grapefruit is created by the intersection of orange (Citrus aurantium)
and pomelo (Citrus maxima) and is often misnamed as pomelo. Probably, the type originated on the West Indies
(Barbados) by a random intersection. The evergreen tree reaches maximum heights of up to 15 m, but is
generally maintained at harvest-friendly heights between five and six meters. Young branches have an angular
shape. The narrow, oval leaves are up to 15 cm long and are dark green in color. The tip is blunt and the leaf base
is rounded. The petiole is very wide. The fragrant, white flowers are standing in the leaf axils. The round fruit
has a yellow or slightly reddish-colored shell, depending on the variety. The fruit reaches a diameter of up to 15
cm and has a bitter flesh, which is divided into segments. Depending on the type, the color can vary from light
yellow to dark red.[2]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Grapefruitöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, gelbe bis orange Flüssigkeit. Es hat einen
fruchtig-frischen Duft, mit charakteristischen Citrus-Noten. Das ätherische Öl löst sich in Alkohol (1:1,
Ethanol), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser.
Hauptbestandteil des ätherischen Grapefruitöl ist Limonen, welches einen Anteil von nahezu 100%
haben kann. Charakteristischerweise ist jedoch auch Myrcen enthalten. Der typische Geruch des Öles
wird durch weitere Spurenkomponenten, die unter anderem auch Schwefel enthalten,
hervorgerufen.[3,4]
Characterization
The essential grapefruit oil is an easily movable, yellow to orange liquid. It has a fruity-fresh scent with
characteristic lemon notes. The essential oil is soluble in alcohol (1:1, ethanol), vegetable oils and other essential
oils. It is almost not soluble in water. Main compound of the essential grapefruit oil with content up to near
100% is limonene. Characteristically, myrcene is included as well. The typical smell of the oil is caused by other
trace components, which also contain sulfur, among other compounds.[3,4]
Verwendung in der Küche
Das ätherische Grapefruitöl wird gelegentlich in der Küche zur Aromatisierung von Süßwaren,
alkoholischen und nichtalkoholischen Getränken und Backwaren eingesetzt. Hauptsächlich wird aber
der Saft der Grapefruit bzw. das Fruchtfleisch selbst verwendet. [3]

Use in kitchen
The essential grapefruit oil is sometimes used in cooking to flavor confectionery, alcoholic and non-alcoholic
beverages and baked goods. Mainly, however, the juice of the grapefruit and the flesh itself is used.[3]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Grapefruitöls besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Ätherisches Grapefruitöl wirkt sich bei fettender und zu Akne (Akne vulgaris)
neigender Haut sehr positiv aus. Bei direkter Auftragung auf die Aknepusteln wirkt es lokal
desinfizierend, so dass die Entzündung schneller abklingen kann. Weiterhin fördert das ätherische
Grapefruitöl die Durchblutung der Haut und kann zum vermehrten Abbau von Fettgewebe
(lipolytische Wirkung) beitragen. Diese Eigenschaften wirken sich besonders bei Cellulite
(Orangenhaut, Dellenbildung in der Haut) und bei Adipositas (Fettsucht) positiv aus. Ätherisches
Grapefruitöl soll zusammen mit Fenchelöl, Pfefferöl schwarz und Cardamomöl die Fettverbrennung
im menschlichen Organismus verstärken. Durch die Anregung des Thalamus im limbischen System
wird die Ausschüttung körpereigener Enzephaline (schmerzstillende, opiatähnliche Peptidhormone)
gefördert. Dadurch stellen sich ein Zustand des Wohlbefindens und eine gewisse Grundeuphorie ein.
Gerade bei einer Reduktionsdiät kann dies beim Durchhalten helfen. [4,5]
Rezept für eine Ölmischung bei Muskelschmerzen:
10 Tr. Grapefruitöl
5 Tr. Palmarosaöl
5 Tr. Tonkaöl
5 Tr. Lavendelöl
5 Tr. Majoranöl
30 mL Mandelöl
20 mL Johanniskrautöl
Die ätherischen Öle werden in den fetten Ölen gelöst. Die Mischung wird mehrmals täglich auf die
betreffenden Stellen aufgetragen.
Medical use, phytotherapy
The ingredients of essential grapefruit oil have a number of health-related properties. Essential grapefruit oil
has very positive effect for oily and to acne (acne vulgaris) tending skin. With direct application to the acne
pustules, it acts locally as a disinfectant, so that the inflammation can subside faster. Furthermore, the essential
grapefruit oil promotes blood circulation in the skin and can contribute to increased degradation of fat (lipolytic
effect). These properties have a positive impact especially in cellulite (orange skin, dimpling in the skin) and
obesity. Essential grapefruit oil is supposed to increase burning of fat in the human body along with fennel oil,
black pepper oil and cardamom oil. By the excitation of the thalamus in the limbic system, the release of body's
own enzephalines (analgesics, opioid peptide hormones) is promoted. This will set a state of well-being and a
certain level of euphoria. Especially with a reducing diet, this can help to persevere.[4,5]
Recipe for an oil blend to relieve muscle pain:
10 drops grapefruit oil
5 drops palmarosa oil
5 drops tonka bean oil
5 drops lavender oil

The essential oils are dissolved in the fatty oils. The mixture is applied several times daily to the relevant areas.
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird das ätherische Grapefruitöl aufgrund seiner angstlösenden
(anxiolytischen) Wirkung eingesetzt (s. o). Angewandt als Raumduft (Duftlampe) oder als Massageöl
hilft es, auch unbestimmte Ängste und Stress abzubauen. Zusätzlich wirkt ätherisches Grapefruitöl
stimmungsaufhellend bei depressiven Verstimmungen. Hier werden zusätzlich die Anwendungen als
Ölbad und Einreibung empfohlen.[4,5]
Aroma therapy
In aromatherapy, the essential grapefruit oil is used for its anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) effect (see above). Applied
as a room fragrance (incense burner) or as a massage oil, it helps to relieve anxiety and stress, also when
indefinite. In addition, essential grapefruit oil works as a stimulant in depression. Here, the applications as an
oil bath and ointment are recommended additionally.[4,5]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
Das ätherische Grapefruitöl wird in der Kosmetik zur Komposition von frischen Kopfnoten
verwendet. Beliebt ist es auch zu Aromatisierung von Toilettenartikeln (Seifen, Raumdufterfrischer).
Der Duft lässt sich sehr gut mit anderen Zitrusölen, Eisenkraut, Jasmin, Kardamom, Lavendel,
Muskatellersalbei, Palmarosa, Rose, Rosengeranie, Rosmarin und Zypresse kombinieren. [3]
Use in cosmetic
The essential grapefruit oil is used in cosmetics for the composition of fresh top notes. It is also popular for
aromatization of toiletries (soap, air refresher). The fragrance can be combined very well with other citrus oils,
verbena, jasmine, cardamom, lavender, clary sage, palmarosa, rose, geranium, rosemary and cypress.[3]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Grapefruitöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Ätherisches Grapefruitöl enthält potentiell allergen wirksame Bestandteile wie Limonen und
Linalool. Es können zudem Furocuomarin-Derivate (z. B. Bergapten) enthalten sein, die
photosensibilisierende und phototoxische Eigenschaften haben. Unter Einfluss von UV-Licht (auch
Sonnenlicht) kann es zu Dermatitiden kommen. In Tierversuchen konnte ein karzinogenes und
mutagenes Potential nachgewiesen werden.[3,5]
Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential grapefruit oil are categorized as harmful to health. Essential grapefruit oil
contains potential allergic compounds like limonene and linalool. Contained furocuomarine derivatives
(bergaptene) show photo sensitization and photo toxic effects. Under the influence of UV light (sun light)
sensitive persons might get dermatitis. In animal studies such compounds showed a carcinogenic and mutagenic
potential.[3,5]

For applications on areas of skin exposed to sunshine,
excluding bath preparations, soaps and other products
which are washed off the skin, grapefruit oil expressed
should not be used such that the level in the consumer
products exceeds 4%.
For qualities of the expressed oil in which the less volatile
components have been concentrated by partial or total
removal of the terpene fraction, this limit should be reduced
in proportion to the degree of concentration.
Where the bergapten (5-methoxypsoralen) content of all
relevant oils present in a compound has been determined, it
is recommended that for applications on areas of skin
exposed to sunshine, excluding bath preparations, soaps and
other products which are washed off the skin, the total level
of bergapten in the consumer products should not exceed
0.0015% (15 ppm). This is equivalent to 0.0075% (75 ppm) in
a fragrance compound used at 20% in the consumer product.
Where the level of bergapten has not been determined by
appropriate methods, the limits specified in the guidelines
on individual oils should apply. In those cases, where such
oils are used in combination with other phototoxic
ingredients, the additive effect has to be taken into
consideration and the use levels have to be reduced
accordingly. The sum of the concentrations of all phototoxic
fragrance ingredients, expressed in % of their recommended
maximum level in the consumer product, shall not exceed
