É uma exposição que une dois mundos
diferentes. Chama-se «Fotografias em
Relevo», é uma exposição da autoria do
fotógrafo Paulo Abrantes, de Coimbra.
Está patente até 29 de Outubro na
CCDR Algarve, em Faro. A mostra é uma
iniciativa da Administração Regional
de Saúde, a propósito do «Dia Mundial
da Visão». Dirigida ao público em
geral, com especial atenção ao público
invisual, esta exposição coloca a arte da
fotografia ao alcance de todos, contando
com o apoio e a presença da ACAPO
(Associação dos Cegos e Amblíopes de
Portugal). Conversámos com o autor,
que acredita estar a contribuir para
uma sociedade onde possamos um dia
ser, verdadeiramente, todos diferentes,
todos iguais.
This is an exhibition that unites two different
worlds. Called, «Fotografias em Relevo»
(Photographs in Relief), it is a show of the
work of photographer Paulo Abrantes, from
Coimbra, running until 29th October at Faro’s
CCDR (Commission for Coordination and Rural
Development). The event has been mounted
by the regional health authority (ARS/ Algarve)
to commemorate «Dia Mundial da Visão» (the
World Day of Vision). Directed at the public at
large – with particular emphasis on the blind/
partially-sighted – the exhibition brings the art
of photography to “everyone”, and is backed
by the support and presence of ACAPO (the
association for the blind and partially-sighted
of Portugal). We spoke to Paulo Abrantes
who believes that this way he’s contributing
to a society in which, one day, we can all be
different, but all be equal.
Diese Ausstellung vereint zwei verschiedene
Welten. Sie trägt den Namen «Fotografias
em Relevo» (Fotografien mit Profil) und
zeigt Bilder des Fotografen Paulo Abrantes
aus Coimbra. Die Schau, die noch bis zum
29. Oktober in der CCDR Algarve in Faro
läuft, ist eine Initiative des regionalen
Gesundheitsministeriums (ARS/Algarve) zum
«Dia Mundial da Visão». Sie richtet sich
an ein breites, speziell aber an ein blindes
Publikum. Diese Ausstellung, die die Kunst
der Fotografie jedem zugänglich machen soll,
zählt auf die Unterstützung und Präsenz der
Blindenorganisation ACAPO (Associação dos
Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal). Wir sprachen
mit Paulo Abrantes, der glaubt, dass er auf
diese Weise zu einer Gesellschaft beiträgt, in
der wir alle eines Tages total verschieden und
doch gleich sein können.

Jacinta, talvez a mais internacional cantora portuguesa de jazz,
está de regresso à prestigiada editora «Blue Note» com um novo
disco. «Songs of Freedom – hits from the 60s, 70s and the 80s»,
é o título do novo trabalho discográfico a ser editado no próximo
dia 26 de Outubro. Um disco que nasceu no palco. O projecto
“Songs of Freedom” foi estreado no início deste ano no Jardim de
Inverno do Teatro São Luiz, Lisboa. Foram 9 noites consecutivas
com lotação esgotada. Desejando combater o excesso de
produção a que toda a música é sujeita nos dias de hoje, Jacinta
gravou em estúdio um registo fiel às suas actuações ao vivo,
acompanhada por Paulo Gravato no saxofone e Pedro Costa no
Piano. Recorde-se que Jacinta fez a sua estreia discográfica na
«Blue Note» em 2003, com «A Tribute to Bessie Smith».
Jacinta, perhaps the most internationally well-known
Portuguese jazz singer, is returning to the prestigious «Blue
Note» label with a new disc. «Songs of Freedom – hits from the
60s, 70s and 80s» is the title of her latest album, to be released
on 26th October. «Songs of Freedom» was first performed at the
beginning of the year at Lisbon’s Jardim de Inverno do Teatro São
Luís, and played to packed houses for the run of nine consecutive
nights. In a bid to combat the over-production that almost all
music is subjected to these days, Jacinta recorded a master copy
of her live performances, accompanied by Paulo Gravato on the
saxophone and Pedro Costa on the piano. Jacinta’s first «Blue
Note» album was «A Tribute to Bessie Smith», released in 2003.

Já está em contagem decrescente o regresso de Paulo Furtado ao Algarve. Desta vez, o músico que é também
a sua própria banda, vem ao Teatro Municipal de Portimão (TEMPO), no próximo Sábado, dia 31 de Outubro. O
concerto integra-se na tournée de apresentação do novo disco, intitulado «Femina», que actualmente ocupa o
terceiro lugar no top nacional de vendas. Projecto de longa gestação e difícil concretização, Paulo Furtado colocou
na sua música habitualmente minimal, rápida e abrasiva, um casting internacional de luxo que inclui as actrizes
Asia Argento e Maria de Medeiros, e as cantoras Peaches, Rita Redshoes ou Claudia Efe. Uma trabalheira que
envolveu não só um álbum de 13 canções (mais duas faixas bónus), como também meia-dúzia de curtasmetragens (com algumas das intérpretes do disco), um documentário de Jorge Quintela, o normal videoclip de um

The countdown has begun for Paulo Furtado’s return to the Algarve. This time, the musician – who is also his
own band – will be playing at TEMPO (Portimão’s municipal museum), and the date is Saturday 31st October
(Halloween!) The concert is part of a tour to present his new album «Femina», currently nº 3 in the country’s
top-selling CDs. A project that took a long time, and was very difficult to bring about, Furtado added to his
habitually minimal, fast, abrasive music an international famous casting, including actresses Asia Argento
and Maria Medeiros, and singers Peaches, Rita Redshoes and Claudia Efe. A major work that involved not only
an album of 13 songs (plus two bonus tracks), but half a dozen short films (featuring some of the performers

Der Countdown bis zur Rückkehr Paulo Furtados an die Algarve läuft! Dieses Mal, am
Samstag, 31. Oktober, kommt der Musiker, der auch seine eigene Band ist, ins Theater
Portimão (TEMPO). Das Konzert läuft im Rahmen seiner Tournee, bei der er sein neues
Album «Femina» vorstellt, das momentan Platz drei der landesweiten Verkaufcharts
belegt. Es ist ein langwieriges Projekt, das nicht leicht zu realisieren war und bei dem
Paulo Furtado seiner Musik treu bleibt – minimal, schnell und abrasiv – mit luxuriöser
Unterstützung, die die Schauspielerinnen Asia Argento und Maria de Medeiros, sowie
die Sängerinnen Peaches, Rita Redshoes und Claudia Efe einschließt. Das Gesamtwerk
beinhaltet nicht nur die Scheibe mit dreizehn Stücken (plus zwei Bonustracks), sondern
auch ein halbes Duzend Kurzfilme (mit einigen Interpreten von dem Album), eine

Portugals, erscheint mit ihrem jüngsten Album erneut auf dem
Label «Blue Note». «Songs of Freedom – Hits from the 60s, 70s
and the 80s» ist der Titel ihres neuen musikalischen Werkes,
das am 26. Oktober herauskommt. Das Album entstand auf der
Bühne. “Songs of Freedom” wurde Anfang des Jahres im Jardim
de Inverno des Teatro São Luiz in Lissabon aufgeführt. Neun
Abende hintereinander war die Veranstaltung ausverkauft.In
der Hoffnung, die Überproduktionen, denen heutzutage fast jede
Musik unterliegt, zu unterbinden, hat Jacinta ein Master ihrer LiveAuftritte aufgenommen, begleitet von Paulo Gravato am Saxofon
und Pedro Costa am Klavier. Jacinta hatte ihr Plattendebüt 2003

Chegou recentemente às livrarias “Amália - A Divina Voz dos
Poetas e de Portugal”, uma obra da autoria de Rui Martins Ferreira,
que resulta de uma tese de Mestrado do autor, na área de “Estudos
sobre Mulheres”, centrada na figura e vida de Amália analisadas
através dos poetas que escolheu cantar e através dos poemas que ela
própria escreveu. “As voltas de um Andarilho - Fragmentos da vida e
obra de José Afonso “, de Viriato Teles, chega agora ao mercado com
uma edição revista e actualizada, uma edição da responsabilidade
da «Assírio & Alvim». A primeira edição saiu em 1983.
The book “Amália – A Divina Voz dos Poetas e de Portugal”
(Amália – the Divine voice of the Poets and Portugal) went on
sale in bookshops recently. Written by Rui Martins Ferreira, it
results from a thesis by the author on the theme “Estudos sobre
Mulheres” (Studies on Women), in which he concentrated on
Amália and her life, analysed via the poetry she chose to sing,
and the poems she wrote herself. “As Voltas de um Andarilho –
Fragmentos da vida e obra de José Afonso” (literal translation:
The comings and goings of an errand boy – Fragments of the
life and works of José Afonso” has now come onto the market.
Written by Viriato Teles, it’s a revised updated edition, printed
by «Assírio & Alvim». The first edition came out in 1983.
Gerade erschien das Buch “Amália - A Divina Voz dos
Poetas e de Portugal” (Die göttliche Stimme der Poeten und
Portugals), ein Werk des Schriftstellers Rui Martins Ferreira. Es
entstand aus seinem Diplomthema “Studien über Frauen” und
konzentriert sich auf die Person und das Leben von Amália, die
er ob der Gedichte, die sie für ihre Lieder auswählte und die sie

São a banda do momento. Quase todos os membros têm um
passado relevante no mundo do rock/metal nacional e por isso
não é de admirar que descrevam a música que fazem como
um autêntico “Rock n’Roll Disaster” - um mix personalizado
de peso, groove e melodia para arruinar os melhores gostos
musicais. Depois do lançamento do EP de estreia, os Miss
Lava vão editar o seu primeiro álbum de originais, «Blues
For The Dangerous Miles» pela editora «Raging Planet».
O trabalho foi produzido por Samuel Rebelo e pela banda,
tendo sido ainda misturado e masterizado nos Fascination
Street Studios em Örebro pelo conceituado produtor Jens
Bogren, conhecido pelo seu trabalho com bandas como Opeth,
Katatonia ou Paradise Lost. Em breve, vão estar ao vivo no

Es ist die Band des Augenblicks. Fast alle Mitglieder der
Band Miss Lava haben in der nationalen Rock/Metal-Welt eine
bedeutende Vergangenheit. Daher ist es auch nicht verwunderlich,
dass sie ihre Musik als wahres “Rock’n’Roll Desaster”
beschreiben – ein sehr persönlicher Mix aus Heavy, Groove und
melodischen Klängen, der den besten Musikgeschmack verdirbt.
Nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer ersten EP, bringt Miss Lava nun
ihr erstes Album, namens «Blues For The Dangerous Miles» auf
«Raging Planet» heraus. Samuel Rebelo, der es gemeinsam mit
der Gruppe produziert hat, war auch in den Fascination Street
Studios in Örebro als Mixer für den angesehenen Produzenten Jens

Paulo Abrantes (Luanda, 1969) reside em Coimbra, onde trabalha
como fotógrafo profissional. Tem um largo currículo enquanto
repórter fotográfico e de imprensa. Tem participado em várias
exposições colectivas e desde 2001 tem vindo a desenvolver um
novo processo fotográfico, de modo a tornar as imagens acessíveis
a quem não as pode ver. A exposição tem entrada livre e pode ser
visitada de segunda a sexta-feira das 10h00 às 19h00.
Paulo Abrantes (Luanda, 1969) lives in Coimbra where he
works as a professional photographer. He has a huge curriculum
of work as a photographic reporter, and in the press – and has
participated in various collective exhibitions. Since 2001, he’s
been developing a new photographic process: making images
accessible to those who cannot see. His show is free and can be
seen Monday to Friday from 10am to 7pm.
As fotografias são impressas em papel ZY-TEX 2, numa impressora ZY-FUSE, produzindo diferentes texturas que
dependem da intensidade da luz impressa. Através do tacto, a fotografia fica disponível a pessoas invisuais ou
com dificuldades de visão. A mostra é uma organização da Administração Regional de Saúde do Algarve. O Dia
Mundial da Visão, marcado anualmente sempre na segunda quinta-feira do mês de Outubro, é uma iniciativa da
Organização Mundial de Saúde – OMS e do Programa Visão 20/20 que visa a prevenção e tratamento da cegueira.
Paulo Abrantes (Luanda, 1969) lebt in Coimbra, wo er als
professioneller Fotograf arbeitet. Er blickt bereits auf einen langen
Lebenslauf als Foto- und Pressereporter zurück und hat an vielen
Sammelausstellungen teilgenommen. Seit 2001 entwickelt er ein
neues Verfahren, bei dem die Fotos auch Nichtsehenden nahe
gebracht werden. Der Eintritt zu der Ausstellung ist kostenlos. Sie
ist von Montag bis Freitag, 10 bis 19 Uhr geöffnet.

Como surgiu o interesse em fazer fotografia táctil? E como descobriu este
processo?
O interesse de imprimir fotografias em relevo vem precisamente da descoberta
do processo. Comecei por obter imagens de fraquíssima resolução e de tamanho
pequeno, que ao ampliar, sugeriam pontos que proporcionavam relevo através
de alguma ilusão óptica. O objectivo seguinte foi tentar imprimir aquelas
imagens num suporte que produzisse relevo. Aqui teve grande importância
a Associação dos Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal (ACAPO) que me facultou o
conhecimento ao aconselhar-me a utilizar um papel específico para gráficos,
sensível à temperatura, que impresso numa impressora térmica produz relevos.
Porque não quis seguir o caminho tradicional da fotografia (bidimensional)
- ou é um percurso que também lhe interessa?
A fotografia interessa-me pelo todo, e pelas suas múltiplas técnicas e
possibilidades de representação. A fotografia táctil/em relevo não é mais que
um género tridimensional da fotografia, impressa num suporte/papel específico.
How did this interest in tactile photography develop? And how did you discover
this process?
The interest in printing relief photographs came precisely from the discovery
of the process. I began by obtaining very low resolution, small images that, in
enlarging, suggested points that favoured relief through some form of optical
illusion. The next objective was to try and print those images on a base that
would produce relief. This is where ACAPO came in with their expertise, which
helped me immensely. I use a paper – specific for graphs, sensitive to heat,
which via a thermic printer, produces relief.
Why didn’t you want to follow the traditional path of photography (twodimensional) – or is that a direction that also interests you?
I’m interested in photography in general – by its multiple techniques and
possibilities. The tactile/ relief photograph is no more than a form of 3D image,
printed on a specific base/ paper.
Wodurch entstand Ihr Interesse für die ertastbare Fotografie? Und wie
haben Sie dieses Verfahren entdeckt?
Das Interesse an der Relief-Fotografie entstand durch die Entdeckung des
Verfahrens. Ich begann, als ich kleine Bilder mit sehr geringer Auflösung
erhielt. Sie erweckten beim Vergrößern den Eindruck von Reliefpunkten, wie
eine optische Täuschung. Das nächste Ziel war es, zu versuchen, die Bilder so
abzudrucken, dass man daraus ein Relief entwickeln konnte. An dieser Stelle
kam ACAPO mit ihrer Fachkenntnis dazu, was mir enorm geholfen hat. Sie
rieten mir, ein Papier zu benutzen, das speziell für Grafiken verwendet wird
und hitzeempfindlich ist, auf dem man mit Hilfe eines Thermodruckers Reliefs
herstellen kann.
Warum wollten Sie nicht dem traditionellen (zweidimensionalen) Pfad der
Fotografie folgen – oder interessiert Sie das auch?
Mich interessiert die Fotografie ganz allgemein, mit all ihren vielfältigen
Techniken und Möglichkeiten. Die ertastbare Fotografie ist nicht mehr, als eine
allgemeine dreidimensionale Fotografie, auf ein spezielles Papier gedruckt.
A técnica reside apenas na impressão?
Sim, a impressão é a particularidade deste processo. O papel usado é sensível
à temperatura depois de passado numa impressora térmica. O relevo produzido
depende da intensidade da luz impressa. O maior relevo corresponde ao preto. O
branco não produz qualquer relevo.
Is the technique “limited” to print?
Yes, printing is a pre-requisite of this process. The paper used is sensitive to
temperature after being passed through a thermic printer. The relief produced
depends on the intensity of the printing light. The biggest relief corresponds to
black. White doesn’t produce any relief.
Para este tipo de exposição, é preciso um cuidado especial na escolha dos
temas?
Não necessariamente. Nas minhas exposições incluo sempre um grupo
de imagens subjectivas a fim de permitir que cada um possa ter a sua
livre interpretação. No entanto, se quisermos objectivar mais a mensagem
fotográfica devemos ter em atenção eliminar aquilo que se pode tornar ruído na
informação.
For this type of exhibition, did you have to be careful about your choice of
subjects?
Not necessarily. I always include a group of subjective images in my
exhibitions – to allow people to reach their own conclusions. If we seek to
project/ objectify a photographic message, we have to be careful not to create
the situation of “too much information”.
Mussten Sie für diese Ausstellung die Themen besonders vorsichtig
auswählen?
Nicht unbedingt. Ich habe in meinen Ausstellungen immer einige subjektive
Bilder, die den Besuchern eine freie Interpretation erlauben. Wenn wir eine
fotografische Botschaft anstreben, sollten wir sorgfältig sein und das Bild nicht
mit zu vielen Informationen beladen.
Falou sobre «a fotografia como forma de inclusão». Fale-me um pouco
desse conceito?
A meu ver, este processo permite que novos públicos possam usufruir de
imagens fotográficas e que possam participar em manifestações culturais.
Além disso permite o contacto directo entre as “diferenças” (entre invisuais
e normovisuais). Só assim se anulam preconceitos e ignorâncias que, muitas
vezes, levam à exclusão. Ora, a arte parece-me que deve ser um direito
acessível a todos.
You’ve spoken about «photography as a form of social integration». Explain what
you mean by this concept?
The way I see it, this process allows a new public to benefit from photographic
images, and cultural events. Not only that, it allows direct contact between
“differences” (in this case, between the sighted and the partially-sighted,
or even blind). Only through this kind of contact can we break down
preconceptions and ignorance – which in many cases lead to social exclusion.
Listen, the right to appreciate art should be accessible to everyone!
Sie haben von der «Fotografie als Form der sozialen Integration»
gesprochen. Können Sie mir dieses Konzept erklären?
So wie ich es sehe, erlaubt dieser Prozess, einem neuen Publikum diese Fotos
und damit kulturelle Veranstaltungen zu erleben. Außerdem erlaubt er den
direkten Kontakt zwischen diesen “unterschiedlichen” Leuten – den Sehenden
und den Nichtsehenden. Nur so kann man Vorurteile und Ignoranz ausräumen,
die oft dazu führen, Menschen auszuschließen. Die Kunst sollte für jeden
zugänglich sein.
Que lhe dizem as pessoas invisuais?
Além de manifestarem gratidão pela possibilidade de serem incluídos
socialmente, através de um acto cultural, acham interessantes as texturas
produzidas pelos relevos. A parte interessante deste processo é que existe uma
sincera honestidade da parte destes (novos) espectadores, ou seja, existe a
abertura suficiente para dizer se gostaram – ou não, se perceberam – ou não.
E, o mais gratificante de tudo, sugerem aspectos que podem ser melhorados.
Foi assim que todo este meu trabalho iniciado em 2003 pôde evoluir. Em cada
nova exposição, reformulo. Incluo as sugestões que fui ouvindo e aplico-as na
prática. Este lado crítico e estimulante é o que faz o nosso crescimento e o que
faz evoluir a nossa obra.
What do the blind and partially-sighted tell you?
Apart from demonstrating their gratitude at being socially included through
a cultural event, they think the textures produced by these relief photographs
are interesting. The most interesting thing, for me, is that there is a real,
sincere honesty on the part of these (new) spectators. There’s the opening for
them to say they like something – or not, that they understand something, or
not. But, what’s most gratifying, is that I see areas now that can be improved
on. This is the way my work, which started in 2003 has been able to develop. In
each new exhibition, I reformulate. I include suggestions that I’ve heard, and
apply them in practice. This critical, stimulating side is what makes us grow
and what fashions our work.
Was sagen die blinden Menschen dazu?
Abgesehen davon, dass sie dankbar sind, durch einen kulturellen Akt sozial
eingebunden zu werden, finden sie die Textur der Reliefs sehr spannend. Sehr
interessant ist, dass diese (neuen) Besucher eine unverhohlene Ehrlichkeit
offenbaren. Sie sind aufgeschlossen genug, zu sagen, was ihnen gefällt
und was nicht und was sie verstehen und was nicht. Und das ist besonders
erfreulich, da sich zeigt, wo ich etwas verbessern kann. Auf diese Weise
konnte sich meine Arbeit, die 2003 begann, weiter entwickeln. Ich gestalte
jede Ausstellung neu. Ich beziehe die Vorschläge, die mir unterbreitet werden
mit ein und setze sie um. Diese kritische Seite ist sehr anregend, lässt uns
wachsen und unsere Arbeiten sich weiterentwickeln.
O tacto é um sucedâneo da visão, ou um complemento?
Para o público invisual o tacto é um sentido de extrema importância. Para os
outros, as fotografias adquirem um estatuto de imagem escultórica - a três
dimensões – que pode ser tocada.
So, is touch a successor to vision, or a complement?
For people who cannot see, touch is extremely important. For others, the
photographs acquire a sort of sculpted image – three-dimensional – that can
be touched.
Ist das Berühren ein Ersatz für das Sehen oder eine Ergänzung?
Für das blinde Publikum ist der Tastsinn extrem bedeutsam. Für alle anderen
sind die Fotos nur eine Art Skulptur, die man anfassen kann.
Was bringt Ihnen die größte Zufriedenheit bei diesem Projekt?
Die Tatsache, dass es ein praktischer Weg ist, sich für eine bessere
Gesellschaft einzusetzen.

The fact that it’s contributing, in a practical way, to a better society.
Beruht die Technik nur auf dem Druck?
Ja. Der Druck ist die Besonderheit bei diesem Prozess. Das
temperaturempfindliche Papier kommt in den Thermodrucker, und das
entstandene Relief ist abhängig von der Intensität des Lichtes beim Druck. Das
größte Relief entspricht schwarz. Weiß produziert kein Relief.

O Solista
Um melodrama quando é bem feito, tem um efeito poderoso. É daquelas coisas que mesmo quem
tem um coração de pedra, demora algum tempo a esquecer. Quem se interessa por cinema, sabe que
o realizador britânico Joe Wright entrou para o restrito grupo de cineastas cuja obra exige ser seguida
com a maior das atenções, com «Pride & Prejudice» (2005) e «Atonement» (2007). Agora, é provável
que chegue ao Óscar. Este filme baseia-se numa série de artigos escritos pelo jornalista do «LA
Times», Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), sobre Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), um prodígio cuja carreira
termina quando descobre que sofre de esquizofrenia. Ayers começou a demonstrar sinais da doença
no seu segundo ano na prestigiada escola de música Julliard, acabando por parar nas ruas de Los
Angeles, vivendo como um sem-abrigo e alimentando-se do pouco dinheiro que a sua música lhe dá
nas ruas. Ayers é um virtuoso no trompete, violoncelo e piano. Lopez reparou nele, quando o viu a
tocar Beethoven maravilhosamente ao violino. A sua história fez chorar o mundo através das colunas
de Lopez, que também deu origem a um livro. O filme chega com algum atraso, pois a Paramount
decidiu adiar a estreia de «The Soloist» para poupar nas despesas de promoção publicitária…

when he heard him play Beethoven marvellously on the violin – and the world cried over his story
recounted in Lopez’s columns, which led on to his writing a book. «The Soloist» comes a little late,
as Paramount decided to delay the premiere in order to save promotional expenses…

Dingen, die selbst Menschen mit einem Herzen aus Stein nicht so schnell wieder vergessen. Wer
sich für das Kino interessiert, weiß sicherlich, dass der britische Regisseur Joe Wright zu der kleinen
Gruppe Filmemacher gehört, deren Werke mit größtem Interesse verfolgt werden wie unter anderem
«Stolz und Vorurteil/ Pride & Prejudice» (2005) und «Abbitte/ Atonement» (2007). Es ist sogar
recht wahrscheinlich, dass er einen Oscar erhält. Der Film «Der Solist/ The Solist» handelt von
einer Reihe Artikel des Journalisten Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) von der «LA Times» über ein
ehemaliges Wunderkind, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), dessen Karriere beendet war, nachdem sich
herausgestellt hatte, dass er unter Schizophrenie leidet. Erste Anzeichen der Krankheit machten
sich schon während seines zweiten Jahres an der angesehenen Musikschule Julliard bemerkbar,

“Fanboys” é uma longa brincadeira, para satirizar a obsessão. Até que ponto é que alguém é fã de
algo? Será uma insanidade mental ou uma paixão como outra qualquer? A história é simples - um
grupo de amigos ansiosos pelo retorno de “Star Wars” aos cinemas (a acção do filme situa-se em
1998) resolve invadir o Rancho Skywalker, residência do criador da série, George Lucas, para roubar
uma prévia do filme. É um road movie que conta com confrontos contra fãs de «Star Trek», um índio
feiticeiro, prostitutas em Las Vegas, e as participações de William Shatner (o Capitão Kirk de «Star
Trek»), Carrie Fisher (a princesa Leia), Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Billy Dee Williams (o Lando de
«Star Wars»), entre outros. A motivação maior do bando, é que um dos rapazes tem uma doença
terminal e não sabe se sobreviverá até à estreia do filme. O estúdio, inclusive, achou essa parte
da história triste demais em contraste com o lado cómico do resto, e quis censurá-la. A produção,
por outro lado, não queria que se tratasse apenas de um filme sobre um bando de palermas a fazer
coisas estúpidas. Originalmente, «Fanboys» era para ter estreado em 2007, mas os desencontros
entre produção e estúdio atrasaram um pouco as coisas. No geral é uma comédia engraçada e
quem conhecer os universos e captar as referências do argumento, irá divertir-se mais…
“Fanboys” is one long joke, to satirize obsession. To what point is someone a fan of something?
Will it be a mental insanity – or will it be a passion like any other? The story is simple: a group
of friends, anxious for the return of «Star Wars» to the cinemas (the film’s action is set in 1998)
decide to invade Skywalker Ranch – the home of the series’ creator, George Lucas – to steal a
preview. This is a kind of ‘road movie’ that tells the tale of confrontations between Trekkie fans
– including an Indian witchdoctor and some LA prostitutes – and brings in guest appearances
by William Shatner (the original Captain Kirk), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Kevin Smith, Jason
Mewes, Billy Dee Williams (Lando from the series) and others. The major motivation for the
friends is that one of the boys has a terminal illness – and doesn’t know if he’ll make it to see
the film’s premiere! As it happens, the studios thought this detail too sad - in contrast with the
more comic side of the film - and wanted to censor it. The production team, on the other hand,
didn’t want this simply to be a film about a band of idiots doing stupid things. «Fanboys» was to
have premiered in 2007 originally – but a misunderstanding between the production team and
the studios delayed everything. In all, this is quite an amusing comedy – and whoever knows the
territory and can catch all the plot’s references, will enjoy it even more…
“Fanboys” ist ein großes Vergnügen, das die Besessenheit aufs Korn nimmt. Wie weit kann einen
der Enthusiasmus für etwas führen? Ist es eine Geisteskrankheit oder nur eine Leidenschaft, wie
andere auch? Die Geschichte ist simpel: Ein paar Freunde warten gespannt auf die Rückkehr
von “Star Wars” in die Kinos (der Film spielt 1998) und schaffen es, in die Ranch Skywalker,
dem Zuhause des Schöpfers der Serie, George Lucas, einzudringen, um eine Vorschau des Films
zu stehlen. Es ist ein Road-Movie, der das Zusammentreffen der «Star Wars» Fans mit einem
Medizinmann, Prostituierten in Las Vegas, William Shatner (Captain Kirk aus «Star Trek»),
Carrie Fisher (Prinzessin Leia), Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Billy Dee Williams (Lando aus «Star
Wars») und anderen beschreibt. Die Motivation der Fans ist eine unheilbare Krankheit von einem
der Jungs, der weiß, dass er die Prämiere des Filmes nicht mehr erleben wird. Die Filmstudios
waren der Meinung, dass dieser Teil der Geschichte zu traurig sei, zu stark im Gegensatz zu der
komischen Seite des Films stehe und wollten ihn zensieren. Die Produzenten hatten aber keine
große Lust, einen Film über eine Horde dummer Jungs zu machen. Ursprünglich sollte «Fanboys»
schon 2007 auf die Leinwand kommen, aber die Kontroversen zwischen Produzenten und Studio
verlangsamten den Ablauf. Es ist eine lustige Komödie, und wer «Star Wars» kennt und die
Anspielungen versteht, wird sich köstlich amüsieren.

O Partido social-democrata (PSD) vence 9 autarquias das 16 autarquias na
região algarvia - Alcoutim, Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim, Faro,
Albufeira, Loulé, Silves, Lagoa e Monchique.
O Partido Socialista (PS) vence as Câmaras de Tavira, Olhão, São Brás de
Alportel, Portimão, Lagos, Vila do Bispo e Aljezur.
Em Faro, Macário Correia (PSD) festejou vitória por apenas 130 votos.
Essa foi a diferença tangencial, num universo de 26.500 votantes nas duas
principais candidaturas, que levou o líder da coligação «Faro está Primeiro»
a destronar o socialista José Apolinário da presidência da câmara de Faro.
Macário e obteve 13.340 votos (42,67%), face aos 13.210 socialistas
(42,25%).
O presidente da câmara de Vila Real de Santo António, Luís Gomes, obteve
uma vitória esmagadora que deixou o PS reduzido a um elemento no executivo
municipal, face aos seis vereadores conquistados pelo PSD. Os sociaisdemocratas averbaram 7493 votos, que se traduziu em 71,09%, o segundo
resultado mais expressivo no Algarve em termos percentuais.
Nos próximos quatro anos, Seruca Emídio vai continuar à frente dos
destinos da Câmara Municipal de Loulé, após uma vitória do PPD/PSD por
57%. O PS alcançou 32,62% dos votos, seguindo-se o Bloco de Esquerda
(2,9%), CDS-PP (2,63%) e PCP-PEV (1,92%).
O social-democrata Desidério Silva (PSD) mantêm a liderança da câmara
de Albufeira, com um expressivo total de 9977 votos (67,02%), mais 1300
votos do que em 2005 (62,48%).
O social-democrata Rui André foi uma das grandes surpresas nestas
eleições. Venceu o socialista Carlos Tuta que estava no poder há 27 anos em
Monchique, e preparava-se para realizar o seu último mandato. Tuta perdeu
por 67 votos.
Outra surpresa foi em Vila do Bispo com o socialista Adelino Soares a
conquistar a Câmara a Gilberto Viegas (PSD), com 39,6 % dos votos contra
36,13%, respectivamente.
Em Aljezur, José Amarelinho é o novo edil, que ocupa o cargo deixado pelo
também socialista Manuel Marreiros.
O socialista Jorge Botelho destronou uma liderança de 12 anos do PSD em
Tavira sob a presidência de Macário Correia, que agora concorreu por Faro.
Nas eleições autárquicas de 2013 pelo menos nove presidentes de
Câmara no Algarve vão abandonar os respectivos cargos devido a legislação
recentemente aplicada que limita em três os mandatos consecutivos numa
autarquia.
Os autarcas nestas condições são - Francisco Amaral em Alcoutim, José
Estevens em Castro Marim, Francisco Leal em Olhão, António Eusébio em São
Brás de Alportel, Júlio Barroso em Lagos, Manuel da Luz em Portimão, Isabel
Soares em Silves, Desidério Silva em Albufeira, e Seruca Emídio em Loulé.
Todos estes edis acabam de vencer as eleições nos respectivos concelhos,
preparam o seu último mandato, mas não estão proibidos de voltar a
concorrer à presidência de uma autarquia. Ou seja, podem candidatar-se
a outra Câmara Municipal no imediato, ou à mesma autarquia após um
mandato de intervalo, no caso, em 2017.

In Faro, Macário Correia (PSD) celebrated victory - thanks to just
130 votes. This was the hair’s breadth difference in a universe of
26.500 votes for the two main candidates that allowed the leader of the
alliance «Faro está Primeiro» to topple socialist mayor José Apolinário.
At the final count, Macário polled 13.340 votes (42.67%), as opposed to
the socialists’ 13.210 (42.25%).
The mayor of Vila Real do Santo António, Luís Gomes, won a
resounding victory that left just one PS member on the municipal
executive – alongside six victorious PSD councillors. The PSD
registered a total of 7.493 votes – which translates to 71.09%, the
second most significant result in the Algarve in percentage terms.
Seruca Emídio will continue to lead Loulé Borough Council for the
next four years – after a PPD/ PSD victory of 57%. The PS managed
32.62% of the votes, followed by the left wing Bloco de Esquerda
(2.9%), the CDS/ PP (2.63%) and the PCP-PEV (1.92%).
PSD’s Desidério Silva stays in control in Albufeira, with an impressive
9.977 votes (67.02%) – 1.300 more votes than he polled in 2005
(62.48%).
One of the great surprises of these local elections was the victory of
social democrat Rui André. He toppled socialist Carlos Tuta who had
been in power in Monchique for 27 years and was preparing to run his
final mandate. Tuta lost by 67 votes.
Another surprise came in Vila do Bispo where socialist Adelino Soares
took the top job from PSD’s Gilberto Viegas. The outgoing mayor polled
36.13% of the votes, while Soares won 39.6%.
In Aljezur, José Amarelinho is the new mayor – taking up the reins
from outgoing socialist leader, Manuel Marreiros.
And in Tavira, socialist Jorge Botelho took back a borough that has
been run by the PSD for the last 12 years. Previous mayor Macário
Correia is now the new mayor of Faro.
In the next municipal elections (in 2013) nine Câmara Presidents will
have to stand down due to recent legislation which limits the number of
consecutive mandates in a borough to three.
The nine are: Francisco Amaral in Alcoutim, José Estevens in Castro
Marim, Francisco Leal in Olhão, António Eusébio in São Brás de Alportel,
Júlio Barroso in Lagos, Manuel da Luz in Portimão, Isabel Soares in
Silves, Desidério Silva in Albufeira, and Seruca Emídio in Loulé. All have
just won the elections in their respective boroughs – and, although
preparing for their last mandate, are not prohibited from running as
mayor for another borough when their time is up. Equally – if they take
a four-year (one mandate) “break” – they will be allowed to candidate
once more for mayor of their former borough, in 2017.

von lediglich 130. Dieser knappe Vorsprung bei insgesamt 26.500 ausgezählten
Stimmen, die an die zwei stärksten Kandidaten gingen, verhalf der Koalition
«Faro está Primeiro» (Faro an erster Stelle), dem Sozialisten José Apolinário das
Bürgermeisteramt abspenstig zu machen. Macáro erhielt 13.340 Stimmen (42,67
Prozent), während die Sozialisten 13.210 (42,25%) gewannen.
Der Bürgermeister von Vila Real de Santo António, Luís Gomes, erzielte
ein glänzendes Wahlergebnis und versetzte die PS somit in eine rein
exekutive Rolle. Die PSD gewann mit 7.493 Stimmen (71,09 Prozent) sechs
Stadtabgeordnetensitze. Das Ergebnis ist eines der eindeutigsten an der Algarve.

„Menschen für Menschen“
Qual é a realidade de África hoje? É apenas um continente mergulhado
em guerras e fome, ou já existem sinais de mudança? É isso que
Joachim Gröger, co-fundador da organização humanitária „Menschen
für Menschen“ vem mostrar esta tarde, pelas 19h00, a quem quiser
juntar-se à palestra no auditório da Escola Alemã do Algarve (DSA),
em Silves. Gröger traz um pequeno filme e uma apresentação sem
imagens de miséria, e sobre o trabalho que tem sido desenvolvido na
Etiópia, desde o princípio dos anos 80. São 10 projectos numa área
total de 50.000 km2 (maior que a Suiça) e que envolve o apoio ao
desenvolvimento sustentável de milhares de pessoas. A não perder!
What is the reality of Africa today? Is it simply a continent immersed
in wars and hunger, or are there some signs of change? It’s this
that Joachim Gröger, co-founder of the humanitarian organisation
“Menschen für Menschen” will be showing this evening, at 7pm, to
whoever attends his lecture in the auditorium of the German School
of the Algarve (DSA), in Silves. Gröger will bring with him a short film
and presentation (without the habitual images of misery), showing the
work that has been developing in Ethiopia since the beginning of the
80s. There are a total of 10 projects in all – covering an area of 50.000
square kilometres (larger than Switzerland) – and supporting the
sustainable development of thousands of people. Not to be missed!
Wie sieht die Realität in Afrika aus? Ist der Kontinent von Krieg und
Hunger übersät, oder gibt es Zeichen der Veränderung? Joachim Gröger,
Mitbegründer der humanitären Hilfsorganisation Menschen für Menschen
nimmt heute um 19 Uhr dieses Thema in seinem Referat in der Aula der
Deutschen Schule Algarve in Silves auf. In einem Kurzfilm, ohne Bilder
des Elends, wird die Entwicklungsarbeit in Äthiopien seit den 80er Jahren
aufgezeigt. Es handelt sich um zehn Projekte, die über eine Fläche von
ingesamt 50.000 km² (größer als die Schweiz) verteilt sind und das
Überleben von Tausenden Menschen garantieren. Nicht verpassen!

Ausstellung: Malerei u. Skulpturen
Glyn Uzzell o pintor e Georg Scheele o escultor,
à primeira vista não têm nada em comum.
Esta exposição é a continuação de um diálogo
interessante entre os dois artistas e no qual
estamos convidados a participar.
Inserida nas comemorações dos 10 anos do
Museu, que abriu ao público a 20 de Agosto
de 1999, esta exposição conta a história da
evolução dos trajes de banho ao longo do
século XX e de outros conceitos relacionados
com as práticas balneares do concelho.
Esta exposição é composta por 21 fotografias
que se afastam intencionalmente do registo
tradicional das reportagens de casamento,
esboçando só ligeiramente o acto cerimonial.
Os símbolos populares das festas de S. João,
que decoravam o local, são evidenciados de
modo a remeter para o passado dos noivos –
as circunstâncias em que ambos se
conheceram.

Natural de Norte da Alemanha. Cresceu em
Hamburgo onde frequentou uma Escola d´Arte
privada. Logo a seguir frequentou a Escola
Superior de Música e Artes onde terminou o
exame e diplomou-se com distinção .
Seguem-se as primeiras exposições assim
como estudos em Itália. Em 1975 fundou uma
empresa para planeamento e design de Arte
em jardinagem. Tornou-se sobre a sua
administração uma das empresas de topo,
nesta área em Hamburgo. No ano 1980 Claus
von Oertzen descobriu as suas capacidades
“sinestéticas”. Notou, que ao relacionar-se
com a música clássica a descoberta da
existência de cores exuberantes, que
emergiam dentro de si. Através de estudos
intensos com ele próprio e intercâmbio com
colegas muito conhecidos aprofundou os seus
conhecimentos. Em 1980 vendeu a sua
empresa bem sucedida e começou trabalhar
como artista independente. Os seus quadros
são internacionalmente procurados. Desde
2007 o artista vive e trabalha em Portugal,
perto de Lisboa.

evoca a sua experiência nas noites de pesca
passadas a bordo da traineira «Montes y
Sabino», no mar da Catalunha, apresentando
uma instalação onde predominam as
referências às cores do barco, ao amarelo e
laranja das roupas e uniformes dos
pescadores, ao negro da noite, ao branco das
luzes, ao movimento dos homens do mar, das
redes e cabos até ao percurso do peixe, que
expressam uma realidade que tem muitos
pontos em comum com a faina protagonizada
pelos pescadores de Portimão.

Luís Romão nasceu em Lisboa, em 1970, mas
foi em Albufeira que viveu durante toda a
vida, desde os dois anos de idade, e por isso
gosta de dizer-se algarvio e albufeirense
convicto.
O gosto pela pintura é de sempre, mas só em
2001, então com 31 anos, iniciou-se nas suas
primeiras experiências artísticas, como autodidacta e há cerca de quatro anos passou a
assumir a pintura como uma actividade
quase diária, e a desenvolver a sua própria
forma de pintar e de experimentar.
Sem formação técnica, Luís Romão utiliza
muito pouco os pincéis, uma vez que lhe
interessam essencialmente as texturas e os
movimentos, que os materiais possam criar
quando utilizados de forma “grosseira”.
Considera que se encontra ainda, e claramente, numa fase inicial do seu percurso como
futuro pintor e acha-se um “curioso bem
intencionado e honesto” que coloca “tudo o
que é em todo o pouco que faz”.

«Teatro da Terra» (fundada em Março de 2009 em Ponte de Sor),
liderada pela actriz Maria João Luís, que também encena este texto
clássico do poeta e dramaturgo espanhol Federico Garcia Lorca. «A
casa de Bernarda Alba» sobe hoje e amanhã, pelas 21h30, ao palco do
Convento de Santo António, em Loulé. É uma história aparentemente
simples, sobre uma família fechada, numa sociedade fechada cheia
de padrões, violência, opressão, medo, humilhação e consequente
revolta. Afinal, não estamos assim tão longe desta realidade escrita
em 1936, ano em que o seu autor foi fuzilado. Os bilhetes custam 5

Ein hochkarätiges Stück der neuen Theatergruppe «Teatro da Terra»
(im März 2009 in Ponte de Sor gegründet), die von der Schauspielerin
Maria João Luís geleitet wird. Das Schauspiel «A casa de Bernarda
Alba», in dem sie die klassischen Texte des spanischen Poeten und

Teatro Municipal de Portimão (TEMPO). Com recurso ao teatro de
marionetas, do teatro físico, a temática do exílio surge neste solo
como o ponto para várias interrogações. No átrio de uma estação de
comboios imaginária, há um homem carregado de malas. Viajante
sem destino com uma história guardada na bagagem, para contar

This is a “new circus” performance at TEMPO (Portimão’s municipal
theatre), and goes ahead at 4pm today. Using puppets and physical
theatre, the theme of ‘exile’ is explored as the starting point for
various questions. A man, loaded down with baggage, stands in the
hall of an imaginary railway station. A traveller with no destination,
and a story carried within his suitcases to tell the public. Tickets

Ein neuer Zyklus mit Puppentheater und Schauspielen zum
Thema “Exil” mit verschiedenen Interpretationen beginnt heute

Terramoto de 1755
«O Grande Sismo de 1755 – 254 anos depois – alguns dados
históricos» é o nome da exposição temática que pode ser visitada na
sede da Associação de Defesa do Património Histórico e Arqueológico de
Aljezur, situada na zona antiga da vila, ao longo dos meses de Outubro
e Novembro. A mostra está patente, das 09h00 às 13h00 e das 14h00
às 17h30, excepto aos sábados, domingos e feriados. Recorde-se que
o terramoto de 1 de Novembro de 1755 foi a maior catástrofe natural
até hoje a acontecer em Portugal. Destruiu praticamente a cidade de
Lisboa, provocou inúmeros estragos e milhares de mortos por todo o
País. Alguns cientistas temem que possa voltar a acontecer.
«The Great Earthquake of 1755 – 254 years later – some historical
facts» is the name for this thematic exhibition which can be
seen at the Association for the Defence of Aljezur’s Historic and
Archeological Heritage, in the old part of town, during October and
November, open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm, and 2pm
to 5.30pm (closed on weekends and Bank Holidays). The earthquake
of 1st November 1755 was the largest natural disaster ever to
have befallen Portugal. It destroyed practically the entire city of
Lisbon, and caused widespread devastation and thousands of deaths
throughout the rest of the country. A number of scientists fear a
similar quake could happen again.
Die thematische Ausstellung «O Grande Sismo de 1755 – 254 anos
depois – alguns dados históricos» (Das Große Erdbeben von 1755 254 Jahre danach – einige historische Fakten) kann in den Monaten
Oktober und November jeweils von 9 bis 13 Uhr und 14 bis 17:30 Uhr,
außer samstags, sonntags und an Feiertagen, im Archäologiemuseum,
welches sich in der Altstadt von Aljezur befindet, besucht werden.
Das Erdbeben vom 1. November 1755 war bis heute die größte
Naturkatastrophe, die Portugal je heimgesucht hat, dabei wurde die
Stadt Lissabon teilweise zerstört. Das Beben hat unzählige Schäden
verursacht und Tausende Tote im ganzen Land gefordert. Einige
Wissenschaftler befürchten, dass es sich wiederholen könnte.

Ao longo destes anos a escrever roteiros, considero que a maior
dificuldade tem sido o dilema entre a obrigação deontológica de
ser objectivo e verdadeiro, e consequentemente, por força das
circunstâncias, poder involuntariamente ser injusto e prejudicar
alguém no seu negócio. Tem sido política nossa, quando as
coisas correm mal, ignorar e passar à frente. Mas será que isso
é correcto? Esta semana, resolvemos almoçar na baixa de Faro.
Com a memória da campanha eleitoral ainda fresca, falávamos
sobre a reabilitação das principais ruas do comércio tradicional das
cidades algarvias, em alternativa aos centros comerciais. De facto,
tudo seria diferente se não houvessem tantas casas devolutas por
todo o lado, e se o estacionamento não fosse tão caro. Aqui, estamos
ao lado das velhinhas instalações do Cineclube de Faro, mesmo no
coração da capital do Algarve. Entrámos numa casa que foi totalmente
remodelada. Quem conheceu o estabelecimento anterior que aqui
funcionava, notará uma enorme diferença para melhor. Está tudo
impecável no interior e a pequena esplanada é convidativa. O prato
do dia é peixe cozido e lombo assado no forno (7€ refeição completa).
Bem, para um restaurante que se diz inspirar numa das regiões talvez
com as mais queridas tradições gastronómicas de Portugal, esta oferta
revela pouca imaginação, no mínimo. Decidimos então escolher uma
alternativa e pedir um «bitoque» - a designação portuguesa para um
prato com um bife (porco ou vitela) que se quer de qualidade razoável,
servido com batatas fritas, arroz, ovo estrelado e salada. Aqui, custa
7 euros. Mas o que veio para a mesa foi algo que faria corar os mais
banais restaurantes à beira da estrada (nalguns deles come-se muito
bem). Vamos lá ver. Hoje em dia, qualquer pessoa que vá ao talho com
alguma frequência, sabe muito bem o que é carne de qualidade inferior.
Que dizer quando num sítio agradável nos servem um amontoado de
carne suína (febras?) com batatas congeladas cozidas num banho de
óleo vegetal, com um pouco de alface e dois pedaços de tomate ao lado
e um ovo esturricado em cima? Será que não evoluímos já disso? Será
que é assim que se conquistam clientes e se rentabiliza o investimento?
Será que isto traz alguma mais valia para a restauração da cidade?
Muitas vezes, os empresários investem tudo em equipamento e pouco
em mão-de-obra. Como um bom cozinheiro, por exemplo. E depois, o
resultado vai para a mesa. Por outro lado, aqui em Faro também há um
nicho de mercado (menos exigente) a quem este tipo de oferta poderá
eventualmente servir - os jantares de universitários, onde a comida é
apenas um pretexto para se beber o mais possível (e vomitar tudo logo
a seguir). Pagámos 19 euros no total, por uma refeição que incluiu um
cesto de pão, azeitonas, um refrigerante e 0,25 cl de vinho tinto. Uma
decepção é sempre de lamentar. Talvez para a próxima seja melhor...

Throughout these years of writing reviews, the hardest part
has been the dilemma between one’s ethical obligation to
tell the truth and the realisation that this could perhaps be
involuntarily unfair and go on to prejudice someone in their
business. It’s been my policy – when things go pear-shaped
– to turn a blind eye and move on. But is this right? This week,
we decided to lunch in downtown Faro. With the memory of
the national election campaign still fresh in our minds, we
talked about the rehabilitation of the main shopping streets
of the region’s towns, as an alternative to the construction of
shopping malls. In truth, it would be a lot better if we didn’t
have so many abandoned buildings – full of rodents and fleas
– and if parking charges weren’t so high. We’re alongside the
former Cineclube of Faro, right in the heart of the city now.
We go into a restaurant that recently opened, completely
renovated. Anyone who remembers the old restaurant that
used to be here will see a huge difference. Everything inside is
impeccable, and the outdoor terrace is inviting. The Dishes of
the Day are boiled fish and oven-roasted fillet of pork (€7 for a
complete meal)… Well, for a restaurant in one of the regions
with the best gastronomic traditions in Portugal, these choices
show very little imagination (or effort), to say the least.
We decided to choose something else, and asked for a
«bitoque» - the Portuguese name for a dish with a nice steak
(pork or beef), chips, rice, a fried egg and salad. Here, it costs
€7. But what came to our table was something even the most
ordinary restaurant at the side of the road (where sometimes
you can eat really well) would offer. Let’s put it another way.
These days, anyone who goes to the butchers with any frequency
will know what cheap meat looks like. So what can one say
when a “nice” restaurant serves a heap of pork, with frozen
chips, swimming in vegetable oil, a few sprigs of lettuce, two
slices of tomato on the side, and an overcooked egg on the
top? Haven’t we developed enough, yet? Is this really the way
businesses think they can win customers and get a return on
their investment? Does this add anything to the standard of the

everything in equipment and very little in manpower – a good
cook, for example. The result is on our table! On the other
hand, there is a niche in the (undemanding) market of this
city – and this restaurant could fill it: dinners for university
students – where food is simply a pretext for drinking as much
as possible (and then vomiting later). We spent €19 in total for
a meal (?) that included a basket of bread, some olives, a soft
drink and 0.25 cl of table wine…

In all den Jahren, in denen ich Restaurantkritiken schreibe,
stand ich oft vor dem Dilemma der ethischen Verpflichtung, die
Wahrheit mitzuteilen, und der Überlegung, dass ich falsch liegen
und ein Geschäft schädigen könnte. Mein Grundsatz war stets:
Läuft es schlecht, drücke ich ein Auge zu und weiter geht’s. Aber
ist das in Ordnung? In dieser Woche waren wir in Faros Altstadt
zum Mittagessen. Mit der frischen Erinnerung an die landesweiten
Wahlkampagnen, unterhalten wir uns über den Wiederaufbau des
traditionellen Einzelhandels in den primären Einkaufsstraßen an der
Algarve als Alternative zu den ganzen Einkaufszentren. In der Tat wäre
einiges besser, hätten wir nicht so viele leer stehende Häuser voller
Ungeziefer - und wäre das Parken nicht so teuer. Wir befinden uns vor
dem Gebäude des ehemaligen Cineclube Faro, das mitten im Herzen
der Stadt liegt und gehen in ein Restaurant, das gerade erst, komplett
renoviert, eröffnet wurde. Jeder, der das Gasthaus kennt, das zuvor
dort betrieben wurde, sieht den gewaltigen Unterschied. Im Inneren
ist alles einwandfrei und die Terrasse ist einladend. Das Tagesgericht
ist gekochter Fisch und Schweinefilet aus dem Ofen (€7 für eine
komplette Mahlzeit). Nun, für ein Restaurant, das von der Küche des
Alentejo, eine der interessantesten des Landes, inspiriert sein sollte,
zeugt das Angebot nicht von besonderem Bemühen (eher von wenig
Einsatz). Wir möchten etwas anderes bestellen und entscheiden uns
für «Bitoque» - die portugiesische Bezeichnung für ein Steak-Gericht
(Schwein oder Rind) mit Pommes, Reis, Spiegelei und Salat. Es soll
hier 7 Euro kosten. Aber was uns vorgesetzt wurde, war etwas, was
nicht einmal eines der trivialsten Restaurants am Straßenrand (von
denen einige sehr gut sind) serviert hätte. Anders gesagt, heutzutage
weiß jeder, der hin und wieder zum Schlachter geht, genau, wie ein
billiges Stück Fleisch aussieht. Was soll man also dazu sagen, wenn
man an einem so angenehmen Ort einen Haufen Schweinefleisch
mit tiefgefrorenen Pommes in einem Ölbad vorgesetzt bekommt.
Dazu ein paar Salatblättchen und zwei Stückchen Tomate neben
einem verkohlten Ei. Haben wir uns nicht weiter entwickelt? Glauben
Unternehmen, dass sie so Kunden gewinnen und ihre Investition
sich auszahlt? Trägt das zum Standard der lokalen Restaurants bei?
Oftmals investieren Geschäftsleute viel in die Ausstattung und wenig
in Arbeitskräfte, wie einen guten Koch zum Beispiel. Das Resultat
dieser Herangehensweise liegt vor uns auf dem Tisch. Andererseits
gibt es in Faro noch eine (anspruchslose) Marktnische, in die das
Restaurant passen würde: Abendessen für Studenten, wo das Essen
nur Beiwerk zu „so-viel-wie-möglich Trinken“ ist (um sich dann zu
übergeben). Insgesamt bezahlen wir €19 für eine Mahlzeit (kann
man das so nennen?), zu der ein Korb Brot, Oliven, ein Softdrink und
ein Glas unbekannten Weins gehört….

Numa altura em que as alterações climáticas são cada
vez mais evidentes e se prevê um aquecimento à escala
global, a água potável é cada vez mais um bem a
proteger. Este recurso precioso é hoje uma preocupação
que abrange os governos de todo o mundo. No entanto,
a maior responsabilidade está nas mãos de cada um de
nós. Nos hábitos que temos em nossas casas e no nosso
quotidiano. Esta é uma das conclusões do seminário «O
uso eficiente da Água no Sector Residencial», organizado
em parceria pela associação ambientalista «Quercus» e
a empresa «Águas do Algarve SA.». A discussão juntou
vários especialistas convidados na passada Segunda-feira,
dia 12 de Setembro, no Teatro Municipal de Faro.

At a time when changes in the climate are all the more evident
and global warming is very much an issue, clean “drinkable”
water is more and more a resource to be protected. This
precious natural phenomenon is a concern that unites the
governments of the world. Meantime, the greatest responsibility
is in the hands of each and every one of us – from the way
we use it in our homes, to our day-to-day life. This was the
conclusion of the seminar «O uso eficiente da Água no Sector
Residencial” (the efficient use of water in the residential sector)
jointly organised by environmental association «Quercus»
and the company «Águas do Algarve, S.A.» The discussion
brought various invited specialists together last Monday, 12th
September, at Faro’s municipal theatre.
In einer Zeit, in der die Klimaerwärmung immer
offensichtlicher wird und die globale Erwärmung
vorhersehbar ist, wird Trinkwasser zu einem schützenswerten
Gut. Diese wertvolle Ressource ist heute eine Sorge, die
die Regierungen in der ganzen Welt teilen. Inzwischen liegt
die Hauptverantwortung in unserer aller Hände, in unseren
häuslichen Gewohnheiten und unserem Alltag. Das ist die
Schlussfolgerung des Seminars «Der effiziente Gebrauch
von Wasser im Haushalt”, das gemeinsam von dem
Umweltverein «Quercus» und der Firma «Águas do Algarve
SA.» organisiert wurde. Die Diskussionsrunde vereinte
verschiedene Fachleute, die am Montag, 12. Oktober, ins
Stadttheater Faro geladen wurden.

O assunto é preocupante. “Estima-se que no futuro, dois terços da humanidade
não terão água potável”, disse Francisco Ferreira, professor universitário e
vice-presidente da «Quercus». Na perspectiva dos ambientalistas, em Portugal,
“não estamos a usar bem a nossa água porque desperdiçamos demasiado”,
considerou.
The issue is a worrying one. “It’s estimated that in the future, two-thirds of
humanity will not have clean drinking water”, said Francisco Ferreira, university
professor and vice-president of «Quercus». According to environmentalists, in
Portugal “we are not using water properly – because we waste too much”, he
explained.
Die Angelegenheit ist besorgniserregend. “Man schätzt, dass in Zukunft zwei
Drittel der Menschen kein Trinkwasser zur Verfügung haben”, sagte Francisco
Ferreira, Universitätsprofessor und Vizepräsident bei «Quercus». Aus der Sicht
der Umweltschützer “nutzen wir in Portugal das Wasser nicht sinnvoll, es wird
viel zu viel verschwendet”, sagt Ferreira.
Uma ideia confirmada por Maria do Céu Almeida, do Laboratório Nacional de
Engenharia Civil (LNEC) que sublinhou a dificuldade em estudar objectivamente
o uso da água no País. É difícil, porque os vários distribuidores nas regiões, usam
diferentes estratégias para facturar e gerir a água.
A consideration confirmed by Maria do Céu Almeida, of the LNEC («Laboratório
Nacional de Engenharia Civil » – National Laboratory of Civil engineering), who
underlined the difficulty in objectively studying the use of water in this country.
The difficulty arises due to there being various water distributors – all of which
use different strategies for billing, and running, their businesses.
Das bestätigt auch Maria do Céu Almeida, vom LNEC (Laboratório
Nacional de Engenharia Civil/ Nationales Labor des Bauingenieurwesen),
die die Schwierigkeit betont, objektiv den Gebrauch von Wasser im Land zu
untersuchen. Es ist schwierig, weil die unterschiedlichen Anbieter in den
Regionen sich verschiedener Strategien bedienen, sowohl bei der Abrechnung
als auch bei der Verwaltung des Wassers.
Sabe-se apenas que, segundo dados genéricos de 1999, o uso urbano da água
em Portugal destina-se em 43 por cento ao uso doméstico. A outra grande fatia
- 40 por cento são perdas nas redes. Gasta-se 9 por cento em usos comerciais.
Cerca de 6 por cento da água disponível nas cidades portuguesas é gasta para
fins públicos.
Estima-se também que numa casa normal, entre 28 a 31 por cento do total de
água consumida é gasta no autoclismo. A máquina de lavar roupa gasta entre 32
a 37 por cento e as torneiras gastam 16 por cento – segundo os números do LNEC.
Existe, contudo, um «Programa Nacional para o uso Eficiente da Água».
Foi criado em 2001 e aprovado oficialmente em 2005. Tem por objectivo, até 2015,
racionalizar este recurso, mas por questões de ordem burocrática, está parado.
Por isso, está nas mãos de cada cidadão tomar a iniciativa. Como? Um exemplo
prático é dado pelo projecto experimental «ecofamílias», que envolveu 10 famílias
do Algarve voluntárias. Começou em 2007 e ao fim de um ano, conseguiram uma
poupança de cerca de 48 por cento nos seus gastos totais de água.
“Foi extremamente útil para perceber como é que as famílias usam a água e
qual é o potencial de poupança que se pode ter. E também para percebermos
como é que podemos mudar os comportamentos no futuro e implementar
estratégias”, disse-nos Francisco Ferreira.
A «Quercus» quer agora continuar este projecto noutras zonas do País, e
monitorizar também os consumos de electricidade e hábitos de mobilidade.
“A água continua a ser muito barata, e isso leva ao desperdício. As autarquias
devem evitar as perdas, mas é fundamental que cada pessoa perceba que
trocar o duche por um equipamento eficiente, faz toda a diferença”, considerou
Francisco Ferreira.
No projecto «ecofamílias», a poupança foi possível graças à adopção de novos
hábitos, mas também de equipamentos. Por exemplo, chuveiros “economizadores”
que debitam entre 6 a 7,6 litros por minuto, sem qualquer perda de conforto, em
vez dos 12 a 15 l/m convencionais. Hoje, há no mercado redutores de caudal que
se adaptam a qualquer torneira, a preço muito acessível.
All that’s known – according to general data from 1999 – is that 43 per cent
of urban water in Portugal is used for domestic purposes. The other large
chunk – 40 per cent – is “lost” through leakages in the drainage system. Nine
per cent goes towards commercial use – while six per cent of water used in
Portuguese towns and cities goes on “public use”.
It’s also estimated that in a normal house, toilet flushing “consumes” 28 to 31
per cent of total water use. The washing machine takes up another 32 to 37 per
cent, while 16 per cent is consumed from the taps. These figures come again
from the LNEC.
Meantime, there is a National Programme for the Efficient Use of Water. It was
drawn up in 2001, and officially approved in 2005. Its objective is to rationalise
the use of water by 2015 – but due to bureaucratic issues, it is at a standstill.
Therefore, it’s up to each and every citizen to take the initiative. How? A
practical example is given by the experimental project «ecofamílias», which
involved 10 volunteer families from the Algarve. It began in 2007, and by the
end of the year, the families had achieved a water-use saving of about 48 per
cent.
It was extremely useful to see how these families use water, and how much
potential saving could be achieved. It was also useful to work out how we can
change people’s patterns of behaviour with regard to water, and implement
strategies”, Francisco Ferreira elaborated.
«Quercus» now hopes to continue this project in other areas of the country
– and monitor, at the same time, the use of electricity in the home and families’
mobility habits.
“Water continues to be very cheap – and this leads to wastage. The
municipalities should sort out their leaks – but it’s also fundamental for
everyone to change their showerhead for one that is more “efficient”. It makes
all the difference”, Ferreira continued.
In the «ecofamílias» project, savings were possible thanks to the adoption
of new habits – as well as new equipment. For example, “economising
showerheads” which emit between 6.0 and 7.6 litres per minute – without any
loss of comfort – instead of the conventional 12 – 15 litres per minute.
Man weiß nur, dass, Daten aus dem Jahre 1999 zufolge, der Gebrauch von
Wasser in den Städten Portugals zu 43 Prozent auf den Hausgebrauch fällt.
Eine große Menge, 40 Prozent, geht in den undichten Leitungen verloren.
9 Prozent fallen auf den kommerziellen Handel. Etwa 6 Prozent des in den
Städten verfügbaren Wassers dient öffentlichen Zwecken.
Schätzungsweise werden in einem durchschnittlichen Haushalt zwischen 28
und 31 Prozent des benutzten Wassers für die Toilettenspülung verbraucht. Die
Waschmaschine benötigt 32 bis 37 Prozent, und aus den Wasserhähnen fließen
16 Prozent – so die Daten von LNEC.
Es existiert ein «Nationales Programm für den effizienten Gebrauch von
Wasser», das 2001 ins Leben gerufen und 2005 offiziell genehmigt wurde.
Das Ziel ist, bis zum Jahr 2015 diese Ressource zu rationalisieren, aber aus
bürokratischen Gründen gibt es einen Stillstand.
Daher liegt es in der Hand jeden einzelnen Bürgers, die Initiative zu ergreifen.
Aber wie? Ein praktisches Beispiel gibt das experimentelle Projekt «Eco Casa»,
das zehn freiwillige Familien an der Algarve einbezieht. Es begann 2007, und
nach einem Jahr konnte bereits 48 Prozent des gesamten Brauchwassers
eingespart werden.
“Es war extrem nützlich, um zu verstehen, wie Familien mit Wasser
umgehen, und um das Potential an Einsparung zu erkennen. Außerdem können
wir so verstehen, wie wir unsere Verhaltensweisen zukünftig ändern und
entsprechende Strategien umsetzen können”, berichtet uns Francisco Ferreira.
«Quercus» möchte jetzt das Projekt auf andere Teile des Landes ausdehnen
und zusätzlich den Verbrauch an Strom und Gewohnheiten der Mobilität
beobachten.
“Wasser ist immer noch sehr billig, und das führt zu der Verschwendung. Die
Gemeinden sollten Strafen vermeiden, aber es ist fundamental, dass ein jeder
versteht, dass eine Dusche, die mit der entsprechenden Wassersparvorrichtung
ausgerüstet ist, einen gewaltigen Unterschied macht”, gibt Francisco Ferreira
zu bedenken.

Die gewaltigen Einsparungen bei dem Projekt «Eco Casa» waren dank
neuer Verhaltensmuster möglich, aber auch dank einer bestimmten
Apparatur. “Sparduschköpfe” zum Beispiel, lasse nur 6 bis 7,6 Liter pro
Minute durchlaufen, ohne an Komfort einzubüßen - im Vergleich dazu lässt
der herkömmliche Duschkopf 12 bis 15 Liter pro Minute durch.
Armando da Silva Afonso, vom Verein „Associação Nacional para a
Qualidade nas Instalações Prediais“ hebt die Anstrengungen hervor, die
unternommen werden, um Wasser zu sparen.
Der Verein ohne Erwerbscharakter hat zum Beispiel 70 bis 80 Prozent der
Wasserspülungen, die auf dem portugiesischen Markt existieren, untersucht
und bewertet, um den Bürgern bei der Wahl einer ökologischen Lösung
behilflich zu sein.
Auf der anderen Seite gab das Seminar einen Überblick über das Wasser
in der Region. Die Ingenieurin Sandra Dias, präsentierte eine “Analyse über
den Verbrauch in der öffentlichen Wasserversorgung an der Algarve”.
Aktuell verfügt die Region über ein modernes Netz, das sich „Sistema
Multimunicipal de Abastecimento de Água“ (SMAAA) nennt, das fünfzehn
Gemeinden mit dem kostbaren Gut beliefert und von der Firma «Águas do
Algarve S.A.» verwaltet wird.
Monchique ist noch nicht versorgt, wird aber voraussichtlich Anfang 2010
an das System angeschlossen.
Momentan versorgt es eine Bevölkerung mit 3.770 bis 59.160 Einwohner
pro Stadt. Die Saisonbedingtheit und der Tourismus beeinflussen die
Demografie der Region stark. Schätzungsweise werden ungefähr 400
tausend Leute außerhalb der Saison versorgt und eineinhalb Millionen im
Sommer, zur Hochsaison.

samples.
Actualmente, a região dispõe de uma rede moderna, chamada Sistema
Multimunicipal de Abastecimento de Água (SMAAA), que fornece este bem a 15
municípios. O sistema é gerido pela empresa «Águas do Algarve S.A.»
Monchique ainda não é abastecido, mas prevê-se que esteja ligado ao Sistema já
no início de 2010.
Actualmente, serve uma população que varia entre 3770 a 59160 habitantes por
município. Contudo, a sazonalidade e turismo influenciam bastante a demografia da
região. Assim, estima-se que a população total servida ronde os 400 mil na época
baixa, e um milhão e meio de pessoas durante o Verão, no pico da época alta.
Actualmente, o Sistema abrange 2 centros de controlo de operações, 4 estações de
tratamento de água (em Alcantarilha, Tavira, Fontainhas e Beliche).
A qualidade da água é constantemente monitorizada em 250 pontos ao longo do
Sistema. Anualmente, são realizadas aproximadamente 125 mil análises a mais de 14
mil amostras.
Em termos de dimensão, o sistema abrange 450 quilómetros de condutas, 16
reservatórios (de 63 305 metros cúbicos), e 63 pontos de entrega (nome dado à infraestrutura onde é entregue a água potável aos reservatórios municipais).
Só para se ter uma ideia, o SMAAA movimentou 69,217 milhões de metros cúbicos
de água em 2007, e 68, 356 milhões de metros cúbicos em 2008. Nesse ano, o caudal
médio diário (o volume de água a circular no sistema diariamente) rondou os 187 277
m3/dia.
Se olharmos os dados mais recentes disponíveis, referentes a 2008, é possível
encontrar um consumo muito diferente nos 15 concelhos do Algarve.
O maior consumidor foi o concelho de Loulé, que Sandra Dias justificou, devido à sua
dimensão geográfica. Contudo, é também aqui que existem vários campos de golfe
que podem contribuir para o colocar no topo da lista, consumindo 19 por cento da
água. Logo a seguir, Albufeira consumiu 17 por cento da água disponível no Sistema
em 2008. O município de Alcoutim é aquele a que se fornece menor volume de água,
apenas 0,2 por cento.
O SMAAA contabiliza até agora, um investimento de cerca de 240,3 milhões de
euros estando ainda previsto realizar aproximadamente mais 68,9 milhões em obras
e melhorias.

Den höchsten Verbrauch hat der Kreis Loulé. Sandra Dias rechtfertigt
dies mit der geografischen Größe. Dort gibt es außerdem einige Golfplätze,
die wohl zu dem Spitzenplatz im Jahr 2008 beitragen könnten – auf den
Kreis fallen 19 Prozent des Wasserverbrauchs, gefolgt von Albufeira mit 17
Prozent. Alcoutim liegt mit nur 0,2 Prozent ganz hinten.
Bisher verschlingte das System ein Investment von 240,3 Millionen Euro.
Weitere 68,9 Millionen werden voraussichtlich alsbald in Ausbesserungen
und andere Arbeiten gesteckt.

“Um dos principais problemas que o Algarve tem, a nosso
entender, é que se deixou contaminar vários lençóis de água
subterrânea, com a sanilização e a poluição por nitratos, devido
às actividades agrícolas.
Por isso, resolveu-se apostar em barragens. É uma aposta
arriscada, porque os caudais variam muito e é difícil controlar
a qualidade da água. Isso deve-nos fazer reflectir que houve
um erro no uso das águas no Algarve nos últimos anos. Não
se conseguiu preservar as águas subterrâneas e agora tem
que se construir empreendimentos que têm sempre impactos
ambientais e uma gestão nem sempre fácil”, disse Fernando
Ferreira ao nosso jornal.
“Acho que actualmente o Algarve está focalizado nas duas
barragens de Odeleite e Odelouca e não pode limitar apenas
a essas soluções, que já são de recurso àquilo que seria
desejável. Acho que é preciso trabalhar a longo prazo, na
diversidade de soluções e em três frentes – o uso eficiente
da água existente, recuperação dos aquíferos, e a gestão tão
correcta quando possível das barragens que são o grande
fornecedor de água para consumo humano”.
“One of the main problems that the Algarve has, as far
as we’re concerned, is that it allowed various underground
supplies of water to become contaminated due to pollution
from nitrates used in agriculture. In order to get round
this, the idea of dams was taken on board. It’s a very risky
compromise as discharges vary, and it’s difficult to control
the quality of the water. This leads us to conclude that there
have been mistakes made in the way water has been used
in the Algarve over recent years. The underground aquifers
have been lost and now infrastructures that always carry
with them environmental impact – and are not always easy to
manage – have been constructed in their place”, Fernando
Ferreira told our newspaper.
“I feel the Algarve at the moment is too focused on the two
dams at Odeleite and Odelouca. It cannot limit itself to these
solutions. What’s needed is a more long-term approach, I
feel. A diversity of solutions – on three fronts: the efficient
use of water, the recovery of existing underground aquifers,
and the correct management of dams – which are big
suppliers when it comes to urban water requirements.
“Eines der Hauptprobleme der Algarve, unserer
Meinung nach, ist die Verschmutzung der unterirdischen
Leitungen durch Nitrate aus der Landwirtschaft. Daher
setzt man auf die Stauseen. Das beinhaltet aber ein
Risiko: Die Ausflussmenge variiert, und es ist schwierig,
die Wasserqualität zu kontrollieren. Das führt zur
Annahme, dass in den letzten Jahren bei der Nutzung
des Wassers Fehler begangen wurden. Unterirdische
Ströme gingen verloren und nun müssen Infrastrukturen
geschaffen werden, welche die Umwelt stark
beeinflussen und die nicht immer einfach zu handhaben
sind”, berichtet Fernando Ferreira unserer Zeitung.
“Ich denke, momentan ist die Algarve auf zwei
Stauseen fokussiert, Odeleite und Odelouca, kann
sich aber nicht nur auf diese Lösung beschränken. Wir
müssen langfristig, mit unterschiedlichen Ansätzen, an
drei Fronten wirken: Die effiziente Nutzung des Wassers,

Todos os anos, estima-se que pelo menos 15 por cento dos
portugueses desenvolvem uma doença mental. Muitos deles têm
de ser tratados nos centros de saúde por falta de capacidade
de resposta dos serviços especializados, segundo Caldas de
Almeida, o coordenador nacional para a saúde mental. De
acordo com este responsável não existe actualmente qualquer
estudo epidemiológico sobre o assunto, mas já foi iniciada uma
investigação que dará resultados “dentro de poucos meses”.
Para já, os dados existentes indicam que “há seguramente 15
por cento da população portuguesa geral que, em cada ano,
tem uma doença mental de qualquer tipo”. A depressão é uma
das patologias mais frequentes, mas há outras situações, como
ansiedade e alcoolismo. Estima-se que num futuro próximo,
as doenças psiquiátricas sejam responsáveis pela morte de
milhares de pessoas anualmente. Segundo um estudo realizado
por uma ONG europeia dedicada à prevenção, as principais
causas que afectam a saúde mental são as rotinas diárias de
stress, uma alimentação rica em hidratos de carbono, gorduras
e açúcares, a falta de exercício, e uma situação económico-social
desfavorável. Em Portugal está em marcha o Plano Nacional
de Saúde Mental, que deverá estar completo até 2016.

Every year, it’s estimated that at least 15 per cent of
Portuguese develop a mental illness. Many of them have to
be treated at health centres, due to the lack of specialised
facilities available, says Caldas de Almeida – the national
coordinator for mental health. According to Almeida, there
has been no statistical study into this situation – though
there has been an investigation, which should be reporting
its results “within the next few months”. For the time being,
existing data shows that there’s “certainly 15 per cent of the
general Portuguese population that, every year, suffers from
a mental illness of some kind”. Depression is one of the most
frequent conditions – but there are others, like anxiety and
alcoholism. It’s estimated that in the near future, psychiatric
illnesses will be responsible for the death of thousands of
people every year. A recent study by a European NGO, focused
on prevention, showed that the principal problems affecting
mental health were day-to-day stress, a poor diet – too full
of carbohydrates, fats and sugars – lack of exercise and low
socio-economic status. In Portugal, the «Plano Nacional de
Saúde Mental» (National Mental Health Plan) is being drawn
up, and should be completed by 2016…

Es wird geschätzt, dass in naher Zukunft seelische Krankheiten
jährlich tausende Personen in den Tod treiben. Gemäß einer
Studie, die von einer europäischen Nichtregierungsorganisation,
welche sich der Prävention verschrieben hat, durchgeführt wurde,
sind Hauptursachen von Geisteskrankheiten der Stress, die
kohlenhydrat-, fett- und zuckerreiche Ernährung, der Mangel an
körperlicher Ertüchtigung und eine unsichere sozialwirtschaftliche
Lage. In Portugal wird ein nationaler Plan zur geistigen Gesundheit
ausgearbeitet, der bis zum Jahr 2016 fertiggestellt sein dürfte.

para 2009. Portugal está fora da lista. A Universidade de Harvard,
foi eleita a melhor do mundo no «Times Higher Education Ranking
2009», que não contempla quaisquer instituições portuguesas
na lista dos 200 primeiros. A instituição com 363 anos - que
formou uma mão cheia de presidentes dos Estados Unidos,
incluindo Barack Obama e George W. Bush - funciona também
como uma rede de contactos de alto nível . A lista é integralmente
dominada por universidades dos Estados Unidos e, em menor
escala, britânicas. Entre os países latinos, com excepção
da França, a melhor cotada é a Universidade de Barcelona
(Espanha). Responsáveis das universidades de Lisboa e do Porto
desvalorizam este ranking, que consideraram mais baseado em
“questões de prestígio e antiguidade” do que da actual produção,
nomeadamente científica. O ranking mundial que melhor

teaching institution in its list of the top 200. Harvard, with its
363-year history, has taught a cluster of American presidents,
including Barack Obama and George W. Bush – and also acts
as a network of contacts at the highest level. The Times’ list is
dominated by US universities, and, to a lesser extent, British
ones. For Latin countries (not including France), the best is
Spain’s Barcelona University. Deans and others responsible
for the universities in Lisbon and Oporto dismiss the ‘ranking’,
which they consider too much based on “questions of
prestige and antiquity” and not enough on current production

3.7 per cent of the Portuguese population needs help to live • 3,7 Prozent der portugiesischen Bevölkerung benötigt Sozialhilfe
In the first quarter of this year, the number of people receiving
RSI social benefit increased by 50.000. There are now 385.164
people – equivalent to 3.7 per cent of the resident population of
Portugal – who need financial help in order to survive. Among
these, there are another 38.000 people who, although they
receive wages, still need subsistence allowances. These facts
come from the latest RSI report – destined to stem the serious
lacuna in economic wealth in Portugal. The report revealed
that the benefit paid to each family varies according to their
income, and number of family members. The average amount
paid out is €242 per month (about €89 per beneficiary). People
needing this type of help can be those receiving less than the
social pension (€187 in 2009). For example, a family made up
of two adults and one child can benefit from this income if they
have wages which, together, amount to less than two and a half
pensions (i.e. less than €467). According to the association of
Portuguese trades unions “given the current social and labour
situation, the number of RSI beneficiaries could increase,
particularly as there are tens of thousands of unemployed
people who cannot raise enough money to live on, and who
have run out of unemployment benefit”.
No primeiro semestre deste ano, o número de beneficiários
do Rendimento Social de Inserção (RSI) aumentou em 50 mil
pessoas. São agora 385 164, o que equivale a 3,7 por cento da
população residente em Portugal. Entre estes, há mais de 38 mil
pessoas que, mesmo tendo rendimentos do trabalho, precisam
deste apoio para subsistir, segundo o último relatório de
execução desta medida destinada a atenuar situações de
grave carência económica. O documento revela ainda que a
prestação entregue a cada família varia conforme o rendimento
e a composição dos agregados familiares. O valor médio
atribuído é de 242 euros por mês (qualquer coisa como 89
euros por beneficiário). Podem requerer este apoio indivíduos
cujo rendimento seja inferior ao valor da pensão social (que
corresponde a 187 euros em 2009). Por exemplo: uma família
constituída por dois adultos e uma criança pode beneficiar se
tiver um rendimento mensal inferior a duas pensões e meia
(ou seja, inferior a 467 euros). Segundo comunicado da CGTPintersindical, “perante a situação social e laboral actual, pode vir
a aumentar o número de beneficiários do RSI dado que há dezenas
de milhares de desempregados que não reúnem as condições
de acesso ou esgotaram as prestações de desemprego”.
Algarve Ambiental

Continuamos a acompanhar o trabalho de Anabela Santos,
28 anos, professora de educação ambiental no Centro da
Pena, em Salir – uma escola dinamizada pela associação
«Almargem» visitada por alunos de todo o Algarve.
A primeira turma a visitar o Centro Ambiental da Pena foi a
da Professora Manuela Cardoso, de 2ºano da E.B.1 nº5 Hortas
de Santo António, de Loulé, no passado dia 9 de Outubro.
Depois de falarmos um pouco sobre as quatro estações do
ano e quais as características mais relevantes de cada,
falámos sobre o efeito de estufa e as alterações climáticas.
O tema interessou à turma. O Rodrigo prontamente esticou
o dedo no ar e perguntou – “Oh Anabela, então e nós não
podemos fazer nada?”. A curiosidade do pequeno aluno
foi de encontro ao que eu ia falar logo de seguida - quais
as medidas que todos podemos tomar para ajudar o nosso
planeta! E surpreendentemente, a maioria não só conhecia
os electrodomésticos de eficiência energética como os
possuem em casa, assim como lâmpadas economizadoras.
Será que estamos finalmente no bom caminho? Depois,
partimos para a construção do móbil de Outono, e cada
aluno deste grupo de 18 crianças de 7 anos, deu largas à
sua criatividade. Fios coloridos, suspensos em pequenos
ramos de árvores e decorados com imensos adereços: folhas
secas de eucalipto, nespereira, carvalho, oliveira, figueira;
bolotas; feijões; rolhas de cortiça; botões; restos de tecidos
coloridos - tudo foi possível de utilizar. E estes pequenos
não se deixam influenciar, cada um decide com certeza
como quer enfeitar o seu! E o resultado não podia ser
melhor, levaram para casa verdadeiras obras de arte! Devo
confessar que já tinha saudades de receber as crianças e de
ouvir “Olá Anabela!”. Só me resta dizer “Viva o Outono!”

zum Überleben benötigen. Dies zeigen die neusten Zahlen, die
in einem Bericht vom Sozialamt veröffentlicht wurden. Die Höhe
des Sozialhilfebetrages richtet sich je nach Einkommen und
Familienkonstellation. Der durchschnittlich ausbezahlte Betrag
liegt bei 242 Euro pro Monat (circa 89 Euro pro Empfänger).
Sozialhilfe können Personen mit einem Einkommen, das niedriger

As imagens falam por si! O artista David Haines tem um jeito maravilhoso de fazer
com que as coisas aconteçam. Chegou ao Algarve há menos de uma década atrás – e
desde sempre procurou “retribuir” à região a que agora chama de “sua casa”.
Pintor prolífico e expositor, doa 15 por cento da venda de cada quadro a instituições
de caridade para crianças.
Os últimos a beneficiar desta ajuda (os que vemos muito alegres nesta fotografia)
foram as 17 crianças da Casa dos Pirilampos, em Albufeira – e como nos contou
a directora, Vera Silvestre, “David Haines não nos ajuda apenas de uma forma
organizada, ele fá-lo de coração”.
“Ele guarda algum do seu tempo para as crianças, brinca com elas, conversa com
elas. Todas o adoram”.
“Não falem sobre mim, falem das crianças”, diz modestamente. As suas ideias
para a angariação de fundos também envolvem activamente os mais novos. Aos
Pirilampos, por exemplo, ofereceu pincéis, tintas e telas para pintarem e depois expôs
os trabalhos das crianças juntamente com os seus na Galeria Municipal de Albufeira.
Haines contou aos jovens artistas que as suas pinturas venderam mais rápido que
as suas - como “bolinhos acabados de sair”. (As crianças estão agora ocupadas a
pintar novas telas para o futuro).
A exposição foi um sucesso, tal como todas as outras de David Haines, com cerca
de 1000 euros arrecadados a favor dos Pirilampos.
Haines e a também expositora Armanda Deça ficaram com mais do que uma
simples memória de uma “boa” exposição. Nunca irão esquecer os sorrisos naqueles
rostos quando chegaram com uma carrinha cheia de brindes.
“Fizémos tudo com um orçamento reduzido, para garantirmos que as crianças
ficassem com 115 por cento”. E vimo-nos com uma carrinha cheia de mantimentos,
fraldas, garrafas de óleo, brinquedos, roupas, leite de bebé, arroz, massa e escova de
dentes, latas grandes de atum e 357 embalagens de pasta de dentes! Foi fantástico”,
confessa Haines sorrindo.
Não seria muito mais “fantástico” se mais pessoas promovessem os seus serviços
em prol da comunidade? Sem dúvida que resulta. Não há ninguém que não adore
“sentir-se bem consigo próprio” – e que outra forma existe de nos sentirmos bem
connosco próprios, que não seja adquirindo um quadro de que realmente gostamos e
ao mesmo tempo termos em mente que o nosso gesto “estará a ajudar uma criança
algures por aí”.
Uma coisa é certa, David Haines estará de volta na próxima semana, em Lagos,
no edifício antigo dos bombeiros, na Rua Silva Lopes, perto do Centro Cultural, desta
vez para angariar fundos para o Núcleo de Educação da Criança Inadaptada (NECI),
perto da Praia da Luz, Lagos.
Entretanto, a sua galeria no Largo Dom Pedro, em Loulé, servirá de ponto de
paragem para quem quer que queira deixar um donativo extra para a Casa dos

We’re continuing our series following the
work of environmental teacher Anabela
Santos, 28, who works at the Centro da Pena
(CAP) in Salir – a former primary school
dynamized by the «Almargem» association.
The first class to visit CAP was the

They came on 9th October – and after
talking a little about the four seasons
of the year, and what their different
characteristics were, we discussed the
greenhouse effect and climate change.
The children were very interested.
Rodrigo quickly put his hand in the air
and asked: “But, Anabela, can’t we do
anything about it?” His curiosity was to
find out precisely what I was about to
explain next: the measures all of us can
take to help our planet! And, surprisingly,
the majority of children didn’t just know
The pictures say it all! Artist David Haines has a marvellous way of making
wonderful things happen. He arrived in the Algarve less than a decade ago
– and from the outset sought to “give something back” to the region he now
calls “home”.
A prolific painter and exhibitor, Haines donates 15 per cent of every painting
he sells to children’s charities and concerns.
The latest to receive help (the ones in these joyful pictures) were the 17
children at Albufeira’s Casa dos Pirilampos – and as the institution’s director
Vera Silvestre told us, David Haines doesn’t just help in an organised way, “he
does it with his heart”.
“He really takes time for the children, plays with them, talks to then. They
all love him!”
Delightfully self-effacing: “Don’t talk about me, talk about the children”,
David’s fund-raising ideas also get the youngsters actively involved. With
Pirilampos, for example, he gave the children brushes, paints and canvases
– and then mounted their pictures alongside his at the Galeria Municipal
in Albufeira. He told the young artists that their paintings “sold like hotcakes. Quicker than mine!” (and they’re now busily painting new canvases
for the future).
The show – like all Haines’ exhibitions – was a success, with roughly €1.000
euros raised for Pirilampos.
But, at the end, he and fellow exhibitor Armanda Deça were left with more
than simply the memory of a ‘good’ exhibition. They will never forget the
smiles on those little faces as they drove up with a vanload of treats.
“We did everything on a shoestring, to make sure the children ended up
with 115 per cent. We ended up with a van full of nappies, cooking oil, toys,
clothes, baby milk, rice, pasta, toothbrushes, large cans of tuna – and 357
tubes of toothpaste! It was brilliant!” Haines smiled.
Wouldn’t it just be “brilliant” if more people marketed their services in this
community-friendly way? There’s no doubt that it works. Everyone loves the
“feel-good” factor – and what better feeling to buy a painting you enjoy, and
think: “That helps a child somewhere”.
One thing’s for sure, it’s a formula David Haines is sticking to. He’ll be
back on show next week in Lagos’ Old Bombeiros building, in Rua Silva Lopes,
next to the Cultural Centre – this time raising money for the physically and
mentally challenged children and young people of NECI (Núcleo de Educação
de Criança Inadaptada), near Praia da Luz, Lagos.
Meantime, his gallery in Largo Dom Pedro I, Loulé, serves as a drop-off
point for anyone with extra donations for Casa dos Pirilampos.

light-bulbs. Could it be that we’re finally
on the right track? We then broke up
the discussion to construct an autumn
mobile – and each one of this group of
18 seven-year-olds let their imaginations
run. Coloured threads, suspended in little
tree branches, decorated with all sorts of
ornaments: dry eucalyptus, crab-apple,
oak, olive and fig leaves; acorns, beans,
old bottle corks, buttons, left-over
swatches of material – anything went!
And these little individuals weren’t to be
influenced by anyone. Each one decided
exactly how they were going to decorate
their mobile! The results couldn’t have
been better. They took home real works
of art! I must confess, I had been missing
children, and hearing them saying:
“Hello Anabela!” All that’s left to say now
is “Long Live Autumn!”

Algarve – und von Beginn an wollte er der Region, die er heute sein “Zuhause” nennt,
etwas zurückzugeben.
Der profilierte Maler und Aussteller Haines spendet 15 Prozent aller verkauften
Bilder Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen zu Gunsten von Kindern.
Die letzten, denen er seine Hilfe zuteil werden ließ, waren 17 Kinder aus dem Casa
dos Pirilampos in Albufeira (auf den Fotos zu sehen). Laut der Leiterin der Institution,
Vera Silvestre, hilft David Haines nicht auf eine organisierte Weise, “er tut es mit
dem Herzen”.
“Er nimmt sich wirklich Zeit für die Kinder, spielt und redet mit ihnen. Sie alle
lieben ihn!”
Er ist hinreißend bescheiden: “Lasst uns nicht über mich, sondern über die Kinder
reden”. In Davids Ideen, um Gelder aufzutreiben, werden sogar die ganz Kleinen
aktiv eingebunden. Bei Pirilampos zum Beispiel gab er den Kindern Pinsel, Farben
und Leinwände. Die daraufhin entstandenen Werke stellte er neben seinen in der
städtischen Galerie in Albufeira aus. Er konnte den jungen Künstlern berichten,
dass sich ihre Kunstwerke “wie heiße Semmeln verkauften – viel schneller als meine
Gemälde!”. Nun sind die Jungkünstler damit beschäftigt, neue Bilder zu malen.
Die Schau war – wie alle Ausstellungen von Haines – ein großer Erfolg. Es kamen
fast 1.000 Euro zusammen.
Und am Ende hatte die Mitausstellerin Amanda Deça nicht nur das Gefühl, eine
wirklich ‘gute’ Schau gemacht zu haben. Sie wird das Lächeln auf den kleinen
Gesichtern niemals vergessen, die mit einer Wagenladung toller Dinge davon fuhren.
“Wir haben alles mit einem äußerst knapp bemessenen Budget durchgeführt, um
sicherzustellen, dass die Kinder 115 Prozent erhalten. Wir schafften es, sie mit einem
Transporter voller Windeln, Speiseölen, Spielzeug, Kleidung, Babynahrung, Reis,
Nudeln, Zahnbürsten, riesigen Dosen Thunfisch – und 357 Tuben Zahnpaste nach
Hause fahren zu lassen! Es war fantastisch!” freut sich Haines.
Wäre es nicht auch “fantastisch”, wenn mehr Leute ihre Dienste auf diese
gemeinschaftsfördernde Weise einbringen würden? Der Erfolg ist garantiert. Jedem
gefällt der “Wohlfühlfaktor” – und das noch bessere Gefühl, ein Bild zu kaufen, das
man mag und beim Betrachten zu wissen: “Das hilft irgendwo einem Kind”.
Eines ist ganz sicher, David Haines hält sich an dieses Rezept. Nächste Woche ist er
in Lagos tätig. Im Armazém Regimental sammelt er dieses Mal Geld für die geistig und
körperlich minderbemittelten Kinder und Jugendlichen im NECI (Núcleo de Educação
de Criança Inadaptada), in der Nähe von Praia da Luz, Lagos.
Währenddessen können in seiner Galerie auf dem Largo Dom Pedro I, in Loulé,
jederzeit weitere Spenden für das Casa dos Pirilampos abgegeben werden.

Weiterhin begleiten wir die Arbeit von
Anabela Santos, 28 Jahre, Lehrerin für
Umweltfragen im Centro da Pena, in Salir
– einer ehemaligen Schule, die der Verein
«Almargem» angetrieben hat und die von
Schülern der ganzen Algarve besucht wird.
Die erste Klasse, die das Umweltzentrum
Pena in diesem Schuljahr besucht hat, kam
am 9. Oktober mit ihrer Lehrerin Manuela
Cardoso. Es waren die Zweitklässler aus
der E.B.1 nº5 Hortas de Santo António, aus
Loulé. Nachdem wir uns ein wenig über die
Jahreszeiten und ihre relevanten Merkmale
unterhalten hatten, sprachen wir über den
Treibhauseffekt und den Klimawandel.
Das Thema fand die Klasse besonders
interessant. Rodrigo meldete sich und
fragte: „Anabela, können wir denn gar
nichts machen?” Die Neugier des Jungen
entsprach genau dem, worüber ich mit den
Kindern sprechen wollte. Was kann jeder von
uns tun, um unseren Planeten zu schützen!
Und überraschenderweise kannten die
meisten nicht nur die energieeffizienten
Elektrogeräte, die jeder zu Hause haben
kann, sondern auch Energiesparlampen.
Kann es sein, dass wir uns doch auf einem
guten Weg befinden? Danach bauten wir
ein Herbst-Mobile, wobei jeder der 18
siebenjährigen Schüler seiner Phantasie
freien Lauf lassen konnte. Kleine Zweige
an bunten Fäden, die herrlich geschmückt
wurden: trockene Blätter von Eukalyptus,
Eiche, Mispel-, Oliven- und Feigenbaum;
Bohnen, Eicheln, Korken, Knöpfe; bunte
Stoffreste – alles wurde verwertet. Und
die Kleinen ließen sich nicht beeinflussen.
Jeder entschied voller Bestimmtheit für
sich, wie sein Mobile aussehen sollte! Das
Ergebnis hätte nicht besser sein können. Alle
haben kleine Kunstwerke mit nach Hause
genommen! Ich muss zugeben, dass mir die
Kinder mit ihrem fröhlichen “Olá Anabela!”
in den Ferien gefehlt haben. Bleibt mir nur zu
sagen: „Es lebe der Herbst!”

A Liga para a Protecção da Natureza (LPN/Algarve)
já tem marcado o próximo passeio. Acontece Sábado,
dia 7 de Novembro. É uma caminhada de cerca de
2 horas e meia, ao longo da bela costa vicentina
observando as suas especificidades, e visitando
os restos da fortaleza árabe que aqui existiu no
século XII. O terreno é (quase sempre) arenoso, com
possibilidade de passagens encharcadas. Aconselhase o uso de calçado confortável, impermeável, água
e farnel. O percurso será guiado por Isabel Lima
Araújo (contacto 966912103). Como habitualmente,
os pontos de encontro são o largo da estação de
comboios de Portimão às 08h30, ou às 10h00 no
Parque de estacionamento de Monte Clérigo. As
inscrições estão abertas até 5 de Novembro para o
email: [email protected], indicando nome, data
de nascimento, nº de identificação ou Passaporte,
para efeitos de seguro obrigatório. Como é habitual,
todos são bem-vindos. Numa perspectiva de autosuficiência económica, a LPN/Algarve, pede a todos
uma contribuição simbólica de 1€ aos sócios e 5€ aos
não sócios - mas solicita a todos os não membros
que os queiram acompanhar que contribuam de uma
forma mais efectiva: aderindo à associação. “Quantos
mais formos, mais energia teremos, mais decisões
tomaremos e melhor ambiente deixaremos para o
Futuro. Precisamos de mais ideias, mais acções, mais
espírito voluntário e mais sócios”.

Nature, Algarve branch) has scheduled its next walk.
It will be taking place on Saturday 7th November, and
involves a roughly two and a half hour hike along the
beautiful “Costa Vincentina” (West Coast), observing
its various specialities (both in flora and fauna) and
visiting the remains of an Arab fortress that existed
there during the 12th century. The going is (almost
always) sandy, with the possibility of some muddy
parts and puddles. Participants are advised to wear
waterproof, comfortable shoes and to take water
and a snack along with them. The walk will be led
by guide Isabel Lima Araújo (tel. 966912103), and
as usual the meeting points are the square outside
Portimão railway station at 8.30am or the carpark at
Monte Clérigo beach at 10am. Enrolment is open until
5th November, via email: [email protected],
supplying your name, date of birth, B.I. or passport
number – for insurance purposes. As always, the
event is open to anyone interested, and for the sake
of economic self-sufficiency, LPN/ Algarve members
are asked to pay €1, while all non-members are
charged €5. The association urge non-members to
join them, saying: “The more we are, the more energy
we’ll have, the more decisions we’ll be able to make
and the better the environment that we’ll leave for
the future. We need more ideas, more events, more
voluntary spirit – and more members!”
Der Umweltschutzverein LPN/Algarve hat den Termin für
die nächste Wanderung bekanntgegeben. Sie findet am
Samstag, 7. November, statt und wird etwa zweieinhalb
Stunden in Anspruch nehmen. Der Marsch führt die
Teilnehmer an der schönen Costa Vicentina entlang,
wo Besonderheiten des Gebiets besichtigt werden, wie
die Überbleibsel der arabischen Festung aus dem 12.
Jahrhundert. Da der Boden meist sandig und möglicherweise
auch matschig ist, raten wir zu bequemem, wasserdichtem
Schuhwerk. Vergessen Sie nicht, Wasser und einen Snack
mitzunehmen. Die Wanderung wird von Isabel Lima Araújo
geführt (Telefonnummer 966 912 103). Wie gewohnt sind die
Treffpunkte der Bahnhofsvorplatz in Portimão um 8:30 Uhr
und der Parkplatz Monte Clérigo um 10 Uhr. Sie können sich
