Berlin, im März 2002 Ingolf V. Hertel Wolfgang Sandner Thomas Elsässer Vorwort 3 Preface For the year 2000 the Max-Born-Institute (MBI) has reported in a full review about its scientific work, including short descriptions of all scientific projects and extended articles on important aspects of the research. In turn, the annual report 2001 contains again only a complete documentation of publications, invited talks research cooperations, grants and other activities in research and academic teaching together with lists of members of staff, guests scientists and guest lectures at the MBI. Further information on the ongoing work is available at the World Wide Web-Site of the MBI (http://www.mbi-berlin.de). In 2001, research at the MBI has again lead to a number of outstanding scientific results and thus further strengthened the international competitiveness of the institute. Examples are: − − − − − − the generation of the worldwide shortest light pulses in the visible spectral range with duration of only 3.8 femtoseconds (fs) based on molecular phase modulation, a method developed at the MBI for the first time several highly resolved Rydberg series have been observed in Fulleren molecule which are excited in a multi photon process by femtosecond pulses and maybe described with surprising accuracy by an atom like, one dimensional potential new insights into atomic multiple ionisation at high and highest light intensities: description with the aid of quantum orbits, experimental separation of relevant mechanisms for double ionisation and suppression of non-sequential multiple ionisation by relativistic effects (magnetic drift) the successful travelling wave pump excitation and detection of lasing for low pump energy at 13.9 nm are important mile stones on the to MBI project of a "table top" X-ray laser in the EUV wavelength range photon echo experiments with two and three femtosecond infrared pulses used to determine for the first time the dephasing dynamics of stretching excitation in intra and inter molecular hydrogen bonds the first observation of quantum mechanical repulsion of exciton states in disordered quantum wells. The publication activity in international leading journals continues on a high level and numerous invited talks at important conferences document that the work of the MBI is internationally highly recognised. Work on laser development and measuring technologies has lead again to new patents and licence agreements with companies. Cooperation with the universities in Berlin and Brandenburg in research and teaching is of special significance for the Max-Born-Institute and is more and more recognised, also by the general public, as an important building block of the scientific landscape in Berlin. Wolf Widdra, jointly appointed with the TU as a C3-S professor, has started his work as head of department A1. The cooperation with the University of Potsdam has been strengthened by the nomination of Ingolf Hertel as honorary professor. Three habilitations (Hartmut Ruhl, Matthias Schnürer und Ulrich Eichmann) document the active involvement of the MBI in academic teaching as well as the participation of the MBI in the international Humboldt Graduate School for Materials Science which was opened in the winter term 2001. In December 2001 the HU and the MBI have agreed to offer a joint S- junior professor ship, documenting the active participation of the MBI in novel concepts for recruiting junior academic staff in Germany. Research for about 41 doctoral the- 4 Preface ses was conducted at the MBI in 2001, 10 of them were concluded in 2001, four of these with "summa cum laude" (Parviz Farmanara, Matthias Dammasch und Richard Kopold). Robert Kaindl has been awarded the Lise Meitner Preis of the Humboldt University and Richard Kopold received the Dissertations award of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz as well as the Röntgen prize of the University Würzburg. The national and international scientific recognition of the work done at the MBI is also documented by academic and other positions offered to members of the MBI: Peter Hamm has accepted the call on a chair for Physical Chemistry at the University of Zurich, Hartmut Ruhl has accepted an offer to work as a theoretical physicist in a commercial enterprise in the USA and Georg Korn has taken up the challenge to make use of his scientific expertise as a CEO of a newly founded laser manufacturing company. The cooperation with guest scientists pursuing the scientific goals of the institute continues to be a central concern for the MBI, the application laboratories being the main experimental platform for such joint work. We mention specifically Prof. David Hanna from Southampton University who received spent 6 month at the MBI as a Humboldt awardee. A total of 33 guest scientists worked at the at the institute for an extended research period. In addition, the application laboratories were used by 18 external groups. Access to the application laboratories of the MBI is financially supported by the Large Scale Laser Facility Programme of the EU. The acquisition of grants and contracts has again increased in 2001. The total amount of money spent in 2001 through the various projects was ca. 8.5 Mio. DM, a increase of ca. 2 Mio. DM as compared to 2000. The research areas covered by these project extends from basic research to application oriented topics and direct work for companies. The MBI participates in three special research projects (Sonderforschungsbereiche), several topical programmes and one research group of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) as well as in regional, national and international competence centres and EU funded Networks. Specifically we mention "Optec-Berlin-Brandenburg, OpTecBB", one of seven regional competence networks for optical technologies, selected 2001 in a nationwide competition. The MBI was instrumental in establishing this network which presently comprises more than 40 companies an 20 scientific institutions from the region. We thank all our members of staff, our cooperation partners and our guests for their active involvement in our work, and all friends and sponsors who have accompanied the MBI during the past year for their helpful advise and support.
