As part of his prize for winning the 2013 GP2
crown, thanks to Pirelli, Fabio Leimer has had
a taste of F1 at the wheel of the 2012 Lotus F1
car at Paul Ricard on Tuesday May 27. Pirelli
whose philosophy is to prepare young drivers
for F1 organised this test in the presence of
racing manager Mario Isola. Lotus F1 test
driver Nicolas Prost was also there to assist
Fabio in getting familiar with the car that
notably took Kimi Räikkönen to the win in Abu
Dhabi.
The test took place on the 3.8km circuit. Fabio
covered 78 laps (296.4km) using a total of
7 sets of demo tyres. In the morning session
and in cool temperatures, he covered 42 laps
using Medium, Soft and Hard demo tyres on
low/consistent fuel. His laptimes did not fail to
impress the team! After a short lunch break,
Fabio was back in the car for two runs of
15 laps first on a new set of Mediums and then
on new Soft tyres.

On Tuesday evening, the 2014 edition of World
Stars Football Match took place at Louis II
Stadium. Once again, some GP2 drivers were
invited to join Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa,
Daniil Kvyat, Sergio Pérez, Jules Bianchi and
many more on the field. Therefore, before
fighting in the streets of Monaco for glory,
Stefano Coletti, Stéphane Richelmi, Raffaele
Marciello, Johnny Cecotto, Arthur Pic and
Nathanaël Berthon left their racing overalls
in their locker and put on their shorts and
football boots instead.
Although Nazionale Piloti lost 3-2 and none
of our drivers could score, the cause of the
prestigious event was far more important as it
was to raise funds for the Princesse Charlène
de Monaco Foundation which supports young
children with the dream of becoming a sporting
icon, but who need the support and facilities to
train properly.
#NothingCompares
Stéphane Richelmi has finally pocketed his
first GP2 win. We bet the fact that he did it
on home soil added some extra ecstasy to
the Monegasque’s joy.
to do it a lot and I still keep doing it. It’s part of
the game. I can’t say that I enjoy training, but it’s
part of the job. During the off-season, I will have
1 hour at the gym with my trainer, and then we
mix it with cardio or biking. I try to do something I
actually enjoy like basketball because it’s training
and having fun at the same time.
In the beginning My dad had some
trophies around the house so I was kind of
brought up in it. He was commentating on F1
too. I never knew life without racing, but it was
something I looked at without knowing I could do
until a neighbour of mine decided that he wanted
a go-kart and asked my dad to help him. I went
with them and tried it as well and thought it was
awesome. I was 10. My dad had a philosophy
to never push me into anything. Until I got
introduced to racing and decided I wanted to do
it, he had never pushed me into it. I really loved
it from the get-go.
A gala match for a good cause
Sergio Canamasas enjoyed a well-deserved
maiden GP2 podium on Saturday in Monte
Carlo following a mature and flawless drive.

fantastic prize. It has been a very interesting

HEROES I was brought up in the Indycar
world. I never miss the Indy 500. A lot of the
drivers were inspirational and supportive like Dan
Wheldon, Tomas Scheckter, Dario… Guys like
that were all really helpful and gave me advice.
They were the cool guys for me and I wanted to
do what they were doing. I can almost name half
of the field of Indycar of guys who were helpful
to me. They are my friends now, which is even
cooler for me!
TRAINING I was that short and chubby kid
growing up so it’s always been difficult for me in
the go-kart. My dad told me when I was maybe
13 that I had to take training seriously so I started
RACE DAY ROUTINE I’m easy going so I
don’t like to get in my corner. I like to listen to
music before the race. I can talk to my family or
my friends. I don’t have to be in a bubble. I just
enjoy it. I’ve done a lot of mental training over
the last few years because racing in Europe
has been at a higher level than in America.
That’s helped as well in enhancing my focus and
getting everything that I need to have in the right
direction before a race. I just like to feel relaxed.
OFF TRACK I enjoy getting to go home and
spend some time with my family. We’re quite
an active bunch. I don’t have many friends from
school, but where I live in Indy, lots of other
drivers live there as well so that’s fun. I also play
X-Box a lot!

OUR GRADUATES IN F1
Rosberg reigns in Monaco
The world championship
seesaw
between
the
Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton
and Nico Rosberg tipped back the
other way in Monaco, with Rosberg
dominating the weekend after winning
from pole ahead of his teammate,
reclaiming the title lead in the process.
The German set a strong banker lap
in qualifying before making a mistake
on his last run, with Hamilton unable
to improve due to the yellows, before
leading from lights to flag on the tight,
twisty circuit.
Nico Hülkenberg returned to form with
a flourish: traffic saw the German fail
to make Q3 as he usually does (lining
up instead in P11), but a superb race
saw him make a spectacular pass on
Magnussen at Portier on his way to a
strong 5th place finish. Sergio Pérez’s
weekend unfortunately went the other
way: getting through to Q3 he started
one spot ahead of his teammate, but
a poor start saw him losing a fight
with Button at the exit of Mirabeau,
spinning into retirement on the first
lap.
Further back Romain Grosjean
struggled with his Lotus in qualifying,
lining up one spot ahead of teammate
Pastor Maldonado for P14, but the
Frenchman had a superb run in the
race to finish in the points in 8th.
Unfortunately for the Venezuelan, who
has long had a reputation as a Monaco
expert, he suffered a fuel pump failure
before the formation lap and could not
take the start.
Like so many before him, Esteban
Gutiérrez’s Monaco weekend looked
strong until it wasn’t: the Mexican
outqualified his teammate for P17, and
drove a storming race to put himself
into 9th on merit, but a moment of
imprecision saw him clip the apex at
Rascasse, breaking his suspension and
putting him into a bitterly disappointing
retirement.
The Caterham/Marussia battle saw
a huge change when Jules Bianchi
scored the first points of either team
with a fine finish in P9, almost certainly
winning the 2014 war between them in
a single race. The Frenchman lined up
in P19, one spot ahead of teammate
Max Chilton, but a barnstorming run,
including a robust overtake of Kamui
Kobayashi at Rascasse, put him in
position to take advantage of others’
misfortunes, while Chilton struggled
to finish in P14,one place behind the
Japanese driver. Marcus Ericsson made
a mistake at Mirabeau and took Massa
with him in qualifying, forcing the Swede
to start from the pitlane, but make a solid
recovery drive in the race to finish P11,
usually a source of celebration but for
Bianchi’s heroics.
We leave quite early to the track in
case of traffic. Right decision as we
need 1h30 for 8km (crazy!!). I even decide
to walk for the last part.
07:45 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Going again through our plan for today
with my engineer Sean, everyone is
ready to go.
10:00 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Race starts! I gain one position and was
quite happy that there is no big crash
like last year.
11:10 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
I’m stuck behind slower cars and then it
happens: someone tries to overtake me
at the hairpin. I try to give space but
there just is none and I get pushed into
the barriers. Race finished. I’m gutted…
11:20 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Race is red flagged so I can walk to
my team. Everyone is so upset that
we have another feature race finished
because of someone else.
11:30 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
We watch the restart of the race from
the pits. Palmer is in a different league
and wins it, nice job from Carlin and
Nasr to take 3rd.
11:50 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Having lunch and thinking about the race
again, could have been a good one if we
had just finished.
14:00 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Checking if there is a sticker on my rear
wing that says “Please take me out” can’t find one so that’s not the reason
;-)
15:00 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Speaking about the changes and plans
for the sprint race. We all know there
is almost no chance to finish anywhere
good.
15:30 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Going back to the hotel, taking a shower
and getting a massage from my physio
Markus. Trying to relax but it’s hard.
16:30 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
We go for dinner with my Formula E
teammate Lucas Di Grassi. Is that Menu
price for real? (wow..)
20:00 ............................................................................................................................................................................................
Monaco gets crowded and the people
get in party mode. Time to leave: nothing
to celebrate today.
23:00 ............................................................................................................................................................................................

FL: “It was unbelievable. You know, when
you get the chance to drive a Formula
One car it is always something very
different and special, so I am very thankful
to Pirelli for giving me this opportunity. It
was really interesting to try the different
compounds and feel the difference
between them. So I was massively happy
and excited about today and now I just
hope I get the chance to try a Formula
One car again!”
You’ve tested a Formula One car
before: at the 2011 Young Driver test
in Abu Dhabi, also using Pirelli tyres.
How did that compare with your latest
test today?
FL: “To be honest, it was three years ago
when I last drove a Formula One car so
it’s not that easy to say now. But one
thing I did notice today was that as I was
getting in the car I felt much more calm
and focused, so I found it a lot easier to
concentrate on what the car and the tyres
were doing. Before, it was my first time in
a Formula One car so I was much more
nervous.”
What did you think of all the different
tyres?
@arthurpic
@victorcarbone
FL: “This morning it was hard to get a
good impression as the track was really
bad. It was not so easy to get grip and I
had some understeer but really that was
all about installation. In the afternoon we
made some set-up changes and started
to improve. The long runs were really
good, particularly on the medium tyre. On
the soft tyre I struggled a little bit more.
Generally though the tyres were all very
consistent and good to drive. A fantastic
experience.”

RACE 2 18 LAPS > 77.868 KM
How do these F1 demo tyres compare
to the GP2 tyres you have been used
to driving?
FL: “You can’t really compare them, as
they are not the same thing. A Formula
One car is obviously a lot quicker and
has more downforce than GP2. But it
definitely helped in the test that I had
some experience of Pirelli tyres from
GP2. The principle is the same: you know
the tyre and you know how to work the
tyre. So it certainly helps to have done
GP2 if you want to step up to Formula
One: no question.”
You’re competing in the World
Endurance Championship and Le
Mans this year: is endurance racing
where your future lies?
FL: “Who knows? I had the chance to
have a seat in LMP1, which is a very
good category, so I had to take it. But my
dream is still Formula One. That’s where
I want to go but I am already 25 now so if
I am going to do it, this needs to happen
soon. The experience I have taken today
certainly helps.”

Monaco is always one
of the most prestigious

and this year was no
exception. There are
always a number of
activities to keep the drivers busy and some
which are a little out of their normal comfort

our reigning GP3 Series™ Champion Daniil

been impressing on track and extended
his form to the football pitch – by scoring a

My brother is a caddy for a professional

out with my friends and be away from the
motorsport scene. I don’t like hard rock music
but I do enjoy bands like Muse, they are my
scene. I saw Muse perform in Abu Dhabi last
season before post-season testing which was
great. Before I get in the car, I like my mind to
be clear so I don’t listen to music as I think it
would make me too relaxed, I prefer a fresh
