The scientific program of the chemical analytics division combines the synthesis, the modification and the characterization of advanced materials, including qualitative, semiquantitative and quantitative analytics of elemental composition and characterization of chemical binding in solid and liquid samples. The materials investigated include metals, amorphous and crystalline alloys, semiconductors, and ceramics in the form of clusters, thin films, multilayers and bulk materials. The group’s scientific activities are grouped as follows. In thin film technology, the identification of chemical compounds, phases and binding conditions is of basic importance. In collaboration with the PTB and institutes in Russia, thin films of boron carbonitride and silicon carbonitride are prepared and characterized. The atomic binding states are investigated by Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS at BESSY II) measurements, partially in Total reflection and Glancing Incidence X-ray Fluorescence (TXRF, GIXRF) geometry, by X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry (XPS), and by Transmission Electron Microscopy with Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (TEM-EELS). In another project, thin films (nanofilms) of carbides of boron, silicon, titanium, and tantalum are formed by hydrocarbon plasma immersion ion implantation, in collaboration with Nagasaki Institute of Technology. The chemical film composition is analyzed by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), the phase composition by X-ray Diffraction. Phenomena of aqueous corrosion of metals, depending on their chemical composition, phase and structure, are investigated by electrochemical and trace analytical methods. The methods include potential-time and current-potential (polarization, cyclic voltammetry) measurements and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The materials investigated are alloys of aluminium, titanium, magnesium and iron. A special topic is the corrosion of thin films, formed by plasma and ion beam methods, such as diamond-like amorphous carbon, or by sol-gel synthesis in combination with spin coating, such as zirconium oxide. The underlying corrosion mechanisms and the correlation between film deposition parameters and corrosion protection ability are investigated. SIMS. 3D-SIMS profile of selenium within a graphite surface. Ion beam techniques are applied for modification and analysis of new and innovative materials with technological importance. Performing implantation and/ or irradiation experiments it is possible to influence physical properties and processes like hardness, adhesion, corrosion, lattice structure, phase stability, defect structure, phase transformation or diffusion. Atomic transport, phase formation, alloying of components that are not soluble in thermal equilibrium can be achieved and studied by ion beam mixing experiments. Beside our Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) instrument we use for this purpose energetic ion beams at the GSI and the University Frankfurt. The most frequently applied analysis methods are Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), channeling, Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA), Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) and SIMS. In collaboration with the GSI, membranes or microfilters are formed by irradiation of polymer foils and chemical etching the latent ion tracks to pores. These ion track (nano) filters can be used for filtering liquids from particles, collecting aerosols, and for gas separation, and for analyzing small molecules and molecular fragments by translocation. Filling the nanopores galvanically with metals, such as copper, gold or platinum, and dissoluting the polymer templates nanowires are formed. Dimensions, surface topography, microstructure, and crystallinity are investigated. Further, properties such as electrical conductivity and thermal stability are studied. Irradiation may lead to a degradation of the material properties. Polymers are particularly sensitive towards ionizing radiation. Polyimide and polyepoxide, which are components of superconducting beam guiding magnets at the GSI, are irradiated with relativistic heavy ions and characterized for their properties, such as network degradation and electrical conductivity. Another material of interest in this respect is polycrystalline graphite. Gold-Nanodrähte, hergestellt durch Auffüllen von geätzten Ionenspuren.
