THE CHURCH OF
SANTA MARIA DE
SINEU
It is the first parish of Sineu. The
origin of this temple, built in gothic
style, dates back to 1236. The
church burned down in 1505 and
was rebuilt respecting the same
architectural style. The apse and the
crossing were enlarged between
1880 and 1881. The church was
completely restored at the beginning
of the 21st century.
The interior has a single nave with
five chapels on each side. The
church can be visited during mass
time and on Wednesdays the
temple is opened from 9am to 1pm.
In the annexing museum, you
can find an important collection of
“escudelles”, old ceramic pots. The
bell tower, built in 1549, is a little bit
separated from the church, although
both buildings are connected by the
small “bridge of Santa Barbara”.

SAINT MARK

This sculpture of Joan Maimó, is
located in front of the side entrance
of Santa Maria church. The winged
lion, the symbol of Saint Mark
evangelist, is holding the village´s
coat of arms. The monument was
inaugurated on the 25th of April in
1945 in honour of the third centenary
of the proclamation of Saint Mark as
the patron of the village of Sineu.

CONVENT OF THE
CONCEPCIONIST
NUNS
This convent is situated in the
former Palace of the Mallorcan
Kings. This palace was built on the

und bildete den Kern der ersten
Kirchengemeinde Sineus. Die
Kirche fiel 1505 einem Grossbrand
zum Opfer, wurde aber im gleichen
architektonischen
Stil
wieder
aufgebaut. Zwischen 1880 und
1881 wurden der Kreuzgang und
der Altarraum erweitert. Anfang des
21. Jahrhunderts wurde die Kirche
vollständig restauriert.
Der Innenraum besteht aus einem
einzelnen Schiff mit transversalem
Kreuzgang und hat auf jeder Seite
fünf Kapellen. Die Kirche kann
bei Gottesdienst und mittwochs,
am Markttag, von 9 bis 13 Uhr
besichtigt werden.
Darin befindet sich ein Museum
mit einer wichtigen Sammlung
von
“escudelles”,
antiken
Keramikgefässen. Der Kirchturm,
1549 erbaut, steht getrennt von der
Kirche, aber beide sind durch eine
bedeckte Überführung, die “Pont de
Santa Bárbara” heisst verbünden.

SANKT MARKUS
Das Sankt Markus Denkmal,
gegenüber dem Seiteneingang der
Santa Maria Kirche wurde von dem
Künstler Joan Maimó geschaffen.
Es stellt einen geflügelten Löwen
dar, das Symbol des Evangelisten,
der das Wappen von Sineu trägt,
als Schutzheiliger von Sineu ist

Dieses Nonnenkloster befindet sich
im Palast der Könige von Mallorca,
der im Jahre 1309 auf Anweisung
des
mallorquinischen
Königs

of Mallorca. From 1319 to 1526 it
was the residence of the “Veguer de
Fora” (the supreme judicial authority
in the area).
In 1583, by means of the royal
donation of King Philip II, a
community of Concepcionist nuns
was installed, where they still live
today. The architectural ensemble
presents elements of both, as a
fortified palace and as a cloistered
convent.

of King “James I”, the Conqueror.
Inside in the chapel of Saint Joseph
there are objects of great value such
as the “Sant Crist de la Sang”. This
sculptural work of Gaspar Gener,
leads the processions in Easter. The
Good Friday procession is one of
the most visited of the island.

It is the headquarter of the Town
Hall since 1877. Opened in 1677,
the cloister was renovated and
expanded in 1722. In 1835, the
friars were expelled from the building
due to Mendizábal’s law, that sold
all religious buildings to the public.
Nowadays, the building also keeps
the library and the local archives.
MAJESTIC HOUSES
On the streets of Sineu there are a
series of majestic houses, whose
monumentality and unprecedented
simplicity can be appreciated at first
sight. You can also visit a series of
wineries, where meetings were held
and where the grape-juice from the
vineyards from the centre was kept
until 1890, when the phylloxera bug
extinguished them. There are also
a few wells which were important
during drought periods to cover the
necessities of the village. You can
also find a number of crosses which
indicates the town limit.

der Karwoche leitet diese Skulptur
die Prozessionen an, von denen
der Karfreitagsumzug einer der
meistbesuchten ist.

den Ruinen einer muslimischen
Burg ein königlicher Palast errichtet
wurde, wurde der Wochenmarkt
1306 zu einer festen Institution. Bis
heute werden dort, einzigartig auf
der Insel, Nutztiere verkauft.
Der König Sancho gewährte Sineu
1318 ein weiteres Privileg. Seitdem
findet alljährlich im Mai die Fira de
Maig statt, eine der bedeutendsten
Landwirtschaftsausstellungen der
Insel.
In den letzten Jahren hat man
auch die traditionelle Fira de
Sant Tomàs wiederbelebt, die
immer am zweiten Sonntag im
Dezember stattfindet. Die typische
mallorquinische
Streichwurst
“sobrassada”, wichtigstes Produkt
aller Schlachtfeste, spielt dabei die
Hauptrolle.

where the most relevant building of
our architectonic heritage is located:

by King “Jaume II” who granted the
privilege to build on top of the old
Islamic fortress. This construction
meant the consolidation of the
weekly market in 1306, thanks
to the privilege of the King. The
Wednesday Market is still organized
today and it is the only market on
the island where cattle can still be
bought and sold.
The May Fair, dating back to 1318,
was organized thanks to a royal
grant of King “Sancho”. The “Fira de
Maig” grew to be the most important
agriculture and cattle exhibition on
the entire island and had a big social
and economical impact.
A few years ago, the traditional
Saint Tomas Fair has been restored
and it is now celebrated every
second Sunday of December. In
the morning, a pig is slaughtered
and later the visitors can see how
“sobrassada” is made. Sobrassada
is the typical raw cured paprika
sausage. The meat has been mixed
with paprika, and it was the way to

den Christen zurückerobert. Hiermit
begann der Ausbau der extensiven
Landwirtschaft in der Umgebung,
wodurch der Ort zu einem der
wichtigsten
Weizenproduzenten
Mallorcas

ineu, located in the
heart of the island, is
without doubt one of
the most beautiful and
characteristic villages of the island.
This rural community of 4,000
citizens was built during the Roman
and Muslim eras. The village centre
with its narrow streets, traditional
squares, architectural monuments
and buildings, bear witness to a rich
past. The Wednesday Market, one
of the oldest in the island, combined
with its rich past, makes Sineu an
absolute must to visit for tourists.
The Christian conquest in 1229
changed the history of Sineu. It
represented the beginning of an
extensive agriculture based on
cereals and turned the town into
one of the major producers of
wheat in Mallorca. At the numerous
flour mills, the grains of wheat were
measured in a “barcella”, which was
the official measure since 1240.

Eingeweiht im Jahre 1677 und
erweitert und renoviert 1722,
beherbergt er seit 1877 das Rathaus
von Sineu. Die Paulanermönche
wurden 1835 im Zuge der
Beschlagnahmung kirchlicher Güter,
durch den damaligen Spanischen
Ministerpresidenten
Mendizábal,
des Gebäudes verwiesen. Heute
befinden sich in diesem Gebäude
auch die Bibliothek und das Archiv
HERRENHÄUSER
In den Strassen Sineus befinden
sich eine Anzahl von Herrenhäuser,
die in ihrer Grösse und schlichten
Schönheit auffallen. In den
Weinkellern, versammelte man sich
und lagerte den Rebensaft aus
der Umgebung, bis sie im Jahre
1890 wegen der Reblausplage
geschlossen werden mussten. Es
gibt auch eine Anzahl von Brunnen,
die in Trockenzeiten wichtig waren,
um die Bedürfnisse des Ortes
zu decken, sowie zahlreiche
Kreuze, die die Begrenzungen des
Gemeindebezirks markierten.
