B. FRIEDRICH ANI, DURCH DIE NACHT UNBEIRRT

Der 16jährige Mingo lebt am Rande der Großstadt. Er hat kein
Geld, keine richtigen Freunde und keine Perspektive. Dann lernt er
Isa kennen und alles ändert sich.
Komisch finden seine Klassenkameraden Mingo schon: Er raucht
nicht, trinkt nicht und nimmt keine Drogen ein. Er hat trotzdem ein
Problem : Mingo ist verliebt. Isa ist 14, kontaktfreudig und
selbstsicher, so ganz anders als er. Eines Tages geht sie weg,
was keinen außer Mingo zu interessieren scheint. Er macht sich
auf die Suche durch die ganze Stadt, in den Bars und Clubs. Und
findet sie schließlich, ängstlich und verstört (bouleversée). Die
beiden fliehen und leben eine kurze Zeit glücklich, bis das
Schreckliche passiert: Isa stirbt. Mingo ist sehr traurig und fühlt
sich schuldig an ihrem Tod. Er trifft aber einen Reporter, der ihm
hilft, neuen Mut zu finden und ein normales Leben zu führen. !Ein
sehr schöner Roman über die erste große Liebe, über Tod und
über die Kraft (force), dem Leben einen Sinn zu geben.

In Deutschland gibt es nur noch wenige Mädchenschulen, denn bis vor kurzem
glaubte man, dass Mädchenschulen altmodisch und konservativ sind. Neue Studien
zeigen aber, dass Mädchen ohne Jungen besser lernen können. Deshalb haben
Mädchen jetzt an einigen gemischten Schulen bestimmte Fächer wie Chemie,
Physik und Informatik nicht mit den Jungen zusammen.
Dabei hat sich gezeigt, dass sich die Mädchen in diesen Klassen mehr für Chemie
und Physik interessieren und dann auch bessere Noten haben.
Frau Reimer, Lehrerin an einer Mädchenschule, sagt: „Für Mädchen, die gut und
viel lernen wollen, ist eine reine Mädchenschule ideal. Mit Jungen zusammen haben
sie oft Angst. Sie wollen keine falsche Antwort geben und keine dumme Frage
stellen und sagen dann lieber gar nichts, wenn Jungen dabei sind.“
Einige Schülerinnen an Mädchenschulen finden, dass die Pausen ohne Jungen

Technik befragt. Ein weiteres Resultat der

sind fast dreimal so viele wie 2008. Facebook ist
bei den Deutschen das populärste soziale

The Diplomat
In 1880, there was an important meeting in London to discuss international trade and business
between Europe and South East Asia. Over 20 countries sent diplomats to the conference. In the
evenings there were formal dinners. The diplomats were often accompanied by their wives or
husbands at these functions.
At one dinner, the wife of a British diplomat was placed next to a gentleman from China. Lady
Barnes had never seen or met anybody from China before. She felt a little uncomfortable. As she
sat down at the table she did not know what to say to him. She wasn’t sure if he spoke English so
she just smiled. The Chinese gentleman smiled back. They both sat in silence.
Lady Barnes was glad when the soup arrived. It gave her something to talk about. After a few
minutes she turned to the Chinese gentleman and in a loud, slow, clear voice she said, ‘Likee
soupee?’ The Chinese gentleman looked up at her. He smiled and nodded. Lady Barnes did not
try to begin another conversation and neither did the Chinese gentleman. They completed the meal
without speaking another word to each other.
Lady Barnes was very surprised when the Chinese gentleman stood up and began a long speech
at the end of the meal. He thanked the British for the wonderful reception they had given the
Chinese. He thanked them for their hospitality and for a delicious meal. He said that he was sure
that relations between Europe and Far East would improve because of the meeting of diplomats in
London. He spoke perfect English. He was clear, natural and fluent.
When the Chinese gentleman sat down, there was a great applause from the three hundred
guests. He turned to Lady Barnes, who looked embarrassed, and said, ‘Likee speechee?

Basketball
What is the most popular sport in the world? Most people would probably say football, because of
the many millions who play it and the even larger number who watch it on television. There are
some, however, who say the correct answer is basketball – not because of its TV audience, which
is certainly smaller than that for football, but because the number of people who regularly play the
game might be higher - at least 300 million according to most estimates. In China, for example,
which has a population of 1.3 billion, more people play basketball than football, and it is becoming
more popular all the time.
Basketball has existed for less time than some of the world’s other major sports. It was invented in
the early 1890s by a Canadian, James Naismith, working at a college in the state of
Massachusetts in the United States. Wanting to create a game that could be played indoors during
the long winters but would also be active enough to keep people fit, he had the idea of two teams
of players trying to throw a ball into a basket that was above their heads.
Early basketball looked different from the game today: for example the basket didn’t have a hole in
the bottom, so every time a player threw the ball in, someone had to go up to get it out again!
Another difference is dribbling, which is when a player in modern basketball bounces the ball off
the floor while moving across the court: it didn’t exist in early basketball because the balls didn’t
bounce well enough. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is the height of the baskets: James
Naismith put the first one 10 feet (3.05 metres) off the floor, and that’s where they’ve stayed.

The biggest international TV audiences in modern basketball are for games in the National
Basketball Association (NBA) in North America, a league of thirty teams - twenty-nine from the
United States and one from Canada - including famous names such as the Chicago Bulls, Boston
Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Most of the players in the NBA are American but there are also
some foreign stars such as Tony Parker from France and Pau Gasol from Spain.
The United States has usually been the strongest team in international basketball competitions. In
the last Olympic Games, in London in 2012, the US men’s and women’s teams both won gold
medals – the men beat Spain in the final and the women beat France.
