Vorvergangenheit (Plusquamperfekt) –
past perfect tense
Bildung
simple form  had + past participle
They had left before the fight began.
progressive form  had been + present participle
We had been playing for an hour when the fight began.
Anwendung
Werden zwei vergangene Handlungen miteinander in Verbindung gebracht, steht die
frühere (erste) Handlung in past perfect, die spätere (zweite) Handlung in past tense.
Past perfect tense tritt nie ohne past tense auf.
After the guests had arrived (zuerst), the party began (später).
past perfect progressive
Wird verwendet:
■ wenn der Verlauf der (früheren) Handlung betont werden soll.
It had been raining for two days when the dams broke.
Before the guests arrived, Mum had been cooking and baking for hours.
■ in reported speech, ausgehend von present perfect progressive:
Jim said, “I have been waiting for you all morning.”
Jim said that he had been waiting for me all morning.
