Read the following passage about a youth hostel and answer the questions.
To stay at a youth hostel, you must have a membership card (Mitgliedskarte). Whereas
group leaders only need a group card, individual travelers must apply for their own
membership card to be allowed to stay at a youth hostel.
As soon as groups or individuals arrive at a youth
hostel, the youth hostel director (Herbergsvater)
assigns each guest the appropriate sleeping facilities
and, when time permits, shows everyone around. In
most youth hostels at least four people are
accommodated in one room, usually in bunk beds.
Young people can be seen playing games inside and
outside the youth hostels. Of course, everyone participates in hiking. Consequently,
youth hostels are quite often found outside of towns where there are plenty of forests
and other hiking areas.
Meals at a hostel are quite reasonable and nourishing. Every group is responsible for
picking up their meals from the kitchen counter where they are properly distributed and
counted. Modern kitchen equipment has made the preparation and clean-up chores
much more convenient.
JUGENDHERBERGEN
There are over 600 youth hostels in Germany and more than 5,000 youth hostels dotting
the world map. The Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk (DHJ) is affiliated with the
International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF). More than 50 youth hostels in Germany
are located either in former fortresses (Burgen) or castles (Schlösser).
The German youth hostels offer two price categories for
membership: one is a reduced fee for people under 26
years of age, and the other is almost double in price for
those over 26, couples, families with small children or
single parents with children under 16.
All prices listed by the various youth hostels include
overnight accommodations as well as breakfast. Youth
hostels normally have additional charges for bed linen (Bettwäsche), unless guests bring
their own. Guests may also bring their own sleeping bags (Schlafsäcke). There is an
extra charge for lunches and dinners as well. Discount prices are offered to groups.
Travelers who have valid youth hostel ID cards and have no reservations can find out
after 2 PM whether or not there are accommodations available. Those who have
reservations must check in by 6PM, unless a late arrival had been confirmed at the time

of reservation. All arriving guests much show their ID cards and be registered at the
counter which is usually located right at the entrance. Guests must follow the house
rules. Except for families, all male and female guests receive separate rooms. Youth
hostels are closed from 10PM to 7AM, during which time the guests are requested to
keep down the noise level.
What does a typical youth hostel offer? Here are some of the words you should know

activities inside, outside and in the area of the youth hostel.
Geschlossen – indicated the time period when the youth hostel is closed.
Sonstiges – lists any special sights of interest in the vicinity
Nächste Jugendherberge – indicated the location and distance of the nearest youth
hostels.
Lage – indicated the location of the youth hostel
Anreise – describes how to go to the youth hostel when arriving by car (Pkw), train
(Bahn) or auto ferries (Autofähren)

Camping has been popular among Germans for decades. Millions of people spend their
vacations at campgrounds (Campingplätze) that are filled with an array of
accommodations ranging from simple two-person tents to
very elaborate and expensive recreational vehicles.
There are many campgrounds in Germany. Signs showing a
tent (resembling a Native American tepee) indicate that
there is a campground in the area. Just as you can find
details of specific youth hostels on the Internet, most
campgrounds also have a web site that lists such information as address, length of
season, directions, fees, sanitary facilities, food service and special sights. Many
campgrounds offer tips of general interest regarding campers, RVs, tent equipment,
insurance needs, winter camping, special regulations to be observed in the different
countries and in order to avoid overcrowded campgrounds – a list of school holidays
(Schulferien) in the various German states.
The busiest time is during the months of July and August. Therefore, campgrounds
recommend making reservations well in
advance. During the peak summer months, it
is also suggested to look for
the lesser-known places,
away from big cities and
popular tourist sites.

Daniel beschreibt (describes) seinen Urlaub
(vacation).
Ich heiße Daniel und ich wohne in Hamburg in
der Stadtmitte. Im Augst letzten Jahres habe
ich meine Sommerferien an der Küste auf der
Insel Sylt in Norddeutschland verbracht. Wir
haben den Zug genommen, weil meine Mutter
sich während der Fahrt entspannen (relax)
wollte. Ich bin mit meiner Mutter und meiner
älteren Schwester dahingefahren und wir
haben auf einem modernen Campingplatz
nicht weit vom Strand gezeltet.
Leider gab es keine Geschäfte (stores) in der
Nähe, und man musste zwanzig Minuten zu Fuß
gehen, um Lebensmittel (groceries) zu holen. Das
Wetter war gemischt: es gab Schauer und auch
ein paar Sonnige Tage. Wir haben einen
Tierpark besucht und eine Naturwanderung
gemacht, aber das Beste war, als wir mit dem
Hubschrauber um die Insel geflogen sind. Ich
habe Windsurfen gelernt, kann es aber immer
noch nicht richtig – ich bin oft ins Wasser
gefallen.
Der Urlaub war in Ordnung (okay), aber
nächstes Jahr würde ich lieber mit meinen
Freunden zelten. Ich finde, es macht mehr Spaß,
wenn man mit Freunden zusammen ist.
