Indiens ist ein Fall für Chaosforscher, eine Metropole am Rande
des Nervenzusammenbruchs und
gleichzeitig eine süchtig machende
Energiequelle für ihre Millionen
von Einwohnern. Hochhäuser umgeben von Slums, Luxus neben
Bretterbuden, Hightech und Tempel
– in der «Maximum
City» sind Sphären verbunden, die anderswo
fein säuberlich getrennt
werden. Wer Mumbai
in Reinkultur erleben
möchte, muss hinein
ins Gebrodel und Geschiebe der Strassen
und Märkte. Berührungsängste sind hier
völlig fehl am Platz!
Verwirrend ist
Mumbai übrigens sogar
für alteingesessene Bewohner. Besonders seit
Hindupolitiker in den
90er-Jahren beschlossen, Bombay
vom kolonialen Erbe zu befreien
und Hunderte von Gebäuden,
Stras­sen und sogar die Stadt selbst
umzubenennen. Zumindest offi­
ziell. Viele Einheimische halten aus
Bequemlichkeit, Nostalgie oder
­Renitenz an den alten Namen fest.
Auf Ihrem Flugticket wird übrigens
Mumbai, auf dem Gepäckanhänger
jedoch BOM stehen.

India’s biggest, wealthiest and most
bustling city is a classic case for
­researchers of chaos: simultaneously on the brink of a nervous breakdown and an addictive source of
­energy for its millions of residents.
Skyscrapers are surrounded by
slums, luxurious buildings stand
alongside shacks, hi-tech facilities
next to temples – in the
“Maximum City” zones
that would otherwise
be clearly separated
are entangled. To experience Mumbai
in its most archetypical
form, one must venture into the rough
and tumble of the
streets and markets.
Fear of getting up close
and personal is totally
misplaced here.
Mumbai is a bewildering place even
for its own long-time
residents, especially since Hindu
politicians decided in the 1990s
to liberate the former Bombay from
its colonial heritage and set about
renaming buildings, streets and
even the city itself. At least officially.
Many locals continue to stick to
the old names through a combin­
ation of convenience, nostalgia
and resistance to change. Although
your ticket will refer to Mumbai,
your baggage tag will read BOM.
