Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser! What will shops look like in 2020? The discussion is not new, but it was never so exciting. a few years ago we asked ourselves whether online retailers would steal the customers from their bricks-and-mortar colleagues. Now it is a question of the absolutely incredible possibilities offered by the virtual world – and how we can make our own shops even more individual, more customer-friendly and therefore more successful. Branch managers often don’t have a driving licence and trainees rehearse plays. The dm chain of health and beauty stores is unusual in many respects. in this interview Thomas Köck, the Managing Director for Austria, speaks of employees as a company’s most important asset. das unternehmen ist für die menschen da und nicht andersherum. wie wird die dm-strategie vom unternehmen und seinen mitarbeitern gelebt? Incentives gibt es bei dm nicht. the company is there for people and not the other way round. how is the dm strategy lived by the company and its employees? We see the customer as a partner. dm aims to refine the consumer needs of its customers, to offer its employees the opportunity to develop and to operate as a community within its environment in an exemplary manner. Our philosophy does not consist of instructions for use which I can read through quickly, but I have to study it in depth. It is my task, together with colleagues, employees and managers, to pose the question repeatedly as to what these core statements mean for us. Because our principles and goals are listed in a little book entitled ‘dm-Leitbild’ (dm mission statement). Here what is important is that we should internalise the ‘we’ idea. Whether it is a member of the management or a member of staff – we meet our opposite numbers as equals. Because a company can only focus on its customers if at the same time it also focuses on its employees. dm gives its staff the opportunity of learning from each other, of meeting each other as individuals so that each of them can recognise the individuality of the other. This fundamental approach forms the basis for a relationship with each other that is founded on trust. additional factors are a lively meeting culture, regular feedback conversations as regards both interpersonal relationships and specialist knowledge, a wide range of training and further education opportunities, a target and planning process which provides orientation, a comprehensible promotion system and also a clear and transparent salary system. at dm we do not have incentives. 10 cross-channel Mensch dm! Das ermöglicht ihm, mit dem Filialteam im Dialog zu stehen. for years your company has demonstrated the close links between good staff and success. how do you communicate the dm philosophy? The staff discover the meaning themselves – after all, everybody wants to contribute to a cause in a meaningful way. The dm philosophy can only be experienced in our dealings with each other and in our relationship with our customers and other business partners. Of course we also offer seminars about the dm mission statement, but here it is a question of the reflection of our own values against the background of our philosophy. The deciding factor is whether and how these values can be experienced directly in an everyday situation. In our dealings with each other we place value on conversations about relationships and potential. On the basis of the current situation we reach agreements regarding development and support measures. In this way each of us can work better at using his or her abilities and developing our full potential. as Baron von Stein observed, “Trust improves people; eternally dictating to them prevents their maturing.” We invest in our staff and trust them to do things, so that they are willing to assume responsibility. The optimisation process is structured in this way: in virtually all companies we have a matrix structure. That means that each managing director has a regional responsibility in addition to his specialist function. That enables him to enter into a dialogue with the team in the branches. can the dm principle be applied to everyone? how do you select your staff? To fill vacant positions we run workshops in which the applicants mostly find out themselves where their strengths lie. But the decisive factor is that we accompany all staff on their career path in such a way that they feel comfortable and discover their potential. That is why we offer our apprentices theatre workshops in which they can explore human perception. What is remarkable is that 75 percent of them remain with the company after “Trust improves people; eternally dictating to them prevents their maturing.” In dialogue with the teams at the branches – the matrix structure makes it possible. “Here I am a person” – the dm slogan could not be more appropriate. I see good shopfitting and a careful product selection as a basic requirement for the retail sector. Of course we react to trends like cross-channel retailing. and naturally technology already plays an important role and will continue to do so in future. It would be negligent not to believe that. One important question, however, will be how successful we are in developing a sixth sense for these special customer requirements. and then it will be a question of taking steps in such a way that they are feasible from an economic point of view. another subject is the webshop, which has been online since the end of last year. Here at dm in austria we are pioneers. We shall develop the additional components in stages. The interconnection with offers from other partners, whether they are retailers or operators of shopping malls, will become interesting. Trust and convenience are important success factors in the retail sector, right across all channels. as regards the product range, we shall basically stick to our core competences and not pay too much attention to ideas of diversification, in other words we won’t run after every short-lived trend. dm will continue to develop its product range systematically around the themes of health and beauty. haben sie die befürchtung, dass der mitarbeiter zu kurz kommt, wenn dm zu technisch wird? Not in the slightest. It actually complements the service, the incidental development of a need. When a customer visits dm – whether online or the bricks-andmortar shop, then in future he will want to experience our quality of service and encounter even more strongly. It is the people who make the decisive difference, the ones who think about it and who embody this skill. I am quite certain that there will still be dm stores in 2020; however, the product range will be adapted to the customers’ requirements at the location in question, and technology and the online range will be present to supplement this. was würden sie einem lehrling antworten, der sagt: herr köck, selbst ich kaufe nur noch online ein. benötigen sie im Jahr 2020 überhaupt noch personal? In fact the laudatory speech praising Peter and marianne Stöcker, the owners, stated that a store fit for a world city had been created in Eferding, one of the district capitals of Upper austria. The Stöckers were delighted: “The prize shows us that you can achieve anything if you believe in it hard enough.” as managing Director, Stöcker wanted a building that would make a statement from the outside. The inside needed to be flexible enough to provide plenty of space for ideas. The catch phrases which the architects F2 bore in mind when planning the building were “timeless” and “modern”. UmDaSCH Shopfitting also fol- Room dividers for individual zones which can be re-arranged stylistically again and again. lowed them when implementing the shopfitting in accordance with the instructions from Gruschwitz, the architecture design office. The two-storey building is arranged around an atrium with a fountain. The floors are offset from each other. The challenge was to design the areas in an open style while at the same time dividing them into smaller sections. The solution lay in framed room dividers, which create individual zones. They are designed in oak look and function like shop windows within the store. The inside of the room divider, as well as the carpets and lampshades, are designed using different materials. “They are interchangeable so that the fashion house can respond to new collections with a changing colour and material concept,” explains Christian Pranzl, the Project manager at UmDaSCH Shopfitting. With its high degree of flexibility, the shopfitting system Carré used by the company suits the concept ideally. The grid function of the shelving system gives a precise sense of direction and conveys a clear product image throughout the store. antique furniture and artworks, including an old sales desk in the Denim Loft area, break up the shopfitting. Peter Stöcker rescued this eye-catching item from the stocks of a shop in Eferding which closed down over 30 years ago. In the case of the prestigious Josef Umdasch Prize, which was awarded for the first time by the shopfitting division of the Umdasch Concern, there was a change too. To be precise: how the generation of Digital Natives sees the retail world of tomorrow. In a total of 18 projects, students from six German and austrian universities examined the question: “What will the shops of the future look like in a digital consumer world?” The CEO of the Umdasch Group, andreas J. Ludwig, pointed out in his introduction that research had always been an important topic in the concern’s work. and innovation provided the link between the two divisions within the concern: the Doka Group, which focuses on formwork technology, and the Umdasch Shopfitting Group, which is concerned with shopfitting. Three categories, “Fashion & Style”, “Food & Care” and “Home & Entertainment” then provided the direction for the content of the projects submitted. Independently of that, the jury also awarded a special prize for the most innovative project. Peter Prisching, head of Design at Umdasch, accompanied the students in the development phase before a jury of international experts in architecture, marketing and technology adjudicated the results. although the entries were submitted anonymously, the winners – with the exception of the Innovation Prize, which was awarded to the Design academy Berlin – all came from the Campus Kuchl as a part of the University of applied Sciences Salzburg. erstmals wurde der Josef-umdaschforschungspreis von umdasch shopfitting, der ladenbausparte des umdasch-konzerns, verliehen. For 60 years Sportalm Kitzbühel has been combining local patriotism with an instinct for international trends. The success of the family-run business is maintained by the close-knit relationships between the Ehrlichs, whose skilled manipulation of the various fashion styles results in inimitable collections. Nonetheless the brand also operates far beyond the borders of austria, with stores, sales points and outlets in 21 countries. The mood in the Vienna store is understated, almost cool. Visitors entering the shop at Brandstätte 8 – 10 are immediately reminded of the cold season of the year. The grid-like façade arouses associations with snow and winter. The net-like steel load-bearing construction was covered with a three-dimensional casing of Corian. Glass panels and the corporate logo are integrated into the resulting lozenge pattern. With the wishes of the customer constantly in focus: Ulli Ehrlich, chief designer at Sportalm. It was only logical that UMDASCH Shopfitting should be commissioned to carry out a store-check. The construction means that visitors initially take the shop in only in sections. This effect increases the curiosity about the interior. The customer’s imagination is aroused intentionally. associations with winter holidays or snow-covered landscapes are not only desired, but deliberately accepted. Walls with areas as white as snow form an exciting contrast to the dark makassar ebony. Over the course of time Sportalm Kitzbühel has exchanged the props based on rural life for city elements – after all, in addition to the sportswear, the shop also sells winter, leisure and traditional fashions and increasingly also avant-garde designs. accordingly, the Viennese architect Johannes Baar-Baarenfels designed the prototype of an urban fashion temple. While Corian was used for the façade, inside the mineral material Staron has been used to produce all the shelving and room dividers. One advantage of the material is the fact that it is easy to work, thereby resulting in a seamless, homogenous surface. LED lighting is used in a varied manner; invisible rails for clothes hangers are built into the underside of the shelves. accordingly, the products seem to hover in space. The entire concept conveys a feeling of space and generous dimensions. The team surrounding the owners of Sportalm – Father Wilhelm Ehrlich and his daughter Ulli – is very attentive to the needs of the customers. In line with this approach, UmDaSCH Shopfitting was charged with carrying out a professional store-check including “mystery Shopping”. “No matter how well something has been planned or thought out, there is always a risk that we could develop tunnel vision and fail to spot something important,” comments chief designer Ulli Ehrlich candidly. The visit of the experts from Umdasch was therefore opportune. “We wanted to know what impression we make on the numerous tourists, who are very important at this location. People in austria know us and have a particular image in their mind’s eye. But how do visitors from abroad see our store? What sort of impression do we make on them?” When asked whether they would deal with any aspects of the planning differently, Ehrlich replied: “We would do things exactly the same again, but would perhaps choose flooring that is less sensitive. But that is what it’s all about: taking off our rose-coloured spectacles and hearing what impression we make on customers.” “no matter how well something has been planned or thought out, there is always a risk that we could develop tunnel vision and fail to spot something important.” Nonetheless, changes are always in the pipeline, whether it is a matter of seating areas, room fragrance, background music, decoration or visual language – there is nothing that is exempt from constant examination. In general, the concept makes a good impression. at the World architecture Festival, Sportalm was among the Top Ten worldwide and was thus rightfully commended with an award. I’ve never seen anything like it. Past the headgears, behind the hoodies, alongside the skinnies, where you turn left towards the changing cabins, a group of young people is standing, slightly elevated, as if they were on a stage. Or rather: they are swaying backwards and forwards, bending to the right and left, scuttling forwards and backwards. With their arms they describe circles – sometimes large and sometimes small. No – not in the air. They stroke the wall, bore through it with their fingertips, draw and scribble secret codes on coloured shapes. The hands glide across the four-metre by two-metre area made up of no fewer than 14 full-HD displays, as if the wall and their fingers were joined together magnetically. Only occasionally does one of the youngsters break away and leave the group in order to select an item of clothing from the shelves; then he holds it in front of the screens before the choreography starts up again. Die „erweiterte Reali- If you ask people why they do their shopping online, they will often answer: “it’s cheap”; “it saves time”; “it’s easy”. But what about fun? The pleasure of purchasing? an extensive study by PricewaterhouseCoopers aG dating from 2012 supports the belief that purchasing over the internet mostly takes place because it is efficient. Nonetheless – or perhaps for that very reason – an increasing number of online retailers are now trying to win the favour of the consumers via a playful access to the product. If previously static pictures dominated the virtual product presentation, today there are interactive product-user interfaces in accordance with the magic formula “augmented reality”. Ein Perspektivenwechsel – weg vom E-Commerce, hin zum mobilen, dem so genannten m-Commerce – bietet jedoch den viel versprechenden ansatz, traditionelles Einkaufserlebnis mit elektronischer Effizienz zu vereinen. is a technology which aims to help the consumer experience the product via a virtual copy. “Fun and games” like these represent a declaration of war against classic retailing, compared with which the virtual world has not only positioned itself as a model of efficiency, but has now also become a real substitute as regards shopping experience as well. Efficiency and experience will no longer be mutually self-exclusive. For this reason students at TU Dortmund University have devised an experimental research design, in order to discover more about the effect of playful elements at the product-user interface. The conclusion was that adding these dynamics to the online product presentation through the integration of augmented reality has a positive effect on the actual intention to purchase – for shoppers of both sexes. But it also became clear that e-commerce will never be able to reproduce a real shopping experience down to the last detail. However, a change of perspective – away from e-commerce and towards mobile, so-called m-commerce – offers a promising approach to uniting the traditional shopping experience with electronic efficiency. Der Grund liegt auf der Hand: Beim m-Commerce können klassische Funktionen wie etwa das Bezahlen integriert werden, womit sich auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Kaufabschlusses erhöht. ps a glimpse at asia shows the possibilities: in 2011 Tesco presented its Digital Wall in an underground station in Korea, thereby opening the door to consumerism using mobile terminals. and yet: the Digital Wall is already history; it has been replaced by Yihaodian, which is opening 1,000 virtual stores in China. You can stroll along the virtual aisles of a supermarket via app; you can put products into your shopping basket and – after passing the check-out – have them conveniently delivered to your home. The growth of Yihaodian shows clearly that it seems to offer a customer-friendly mixture of traditional and electronic shopping. Here, too, the significance of m-commerce will not only increase; it could even overtake e-commerce in importance. The reason is obvious: classic functions such as payment can be integrated into m-commerce, thereby increasing the likelihood of a purchase. ps stefanie paluch forscht und lehrt an der tu dortmund im bereich dienstleistungs- und technologie-management. A haptic product experience blends with the possibilities of digital product information and online functionality. Doch was heißt das? From the Point of Sale to the Point of Confidence Spontaneously I find myself remembering an anecdote about america’s most important architect. It is said that Frank Lloyd Wright always had the rear-view mirror removed from his cars straightaway. He was not interested in the past; he felt irresistibly drawn towards the future. although those sashaying teenagers have probably never studied modern american architectural history, nonetheless the message of their performance in the RaG store in mariahilfer Straße in Vienna would seem to be perfectly clear: they have put the past behind them, and before them lies the future. In the form of the so-called Shopping Wall. at the end of last year it was tested in the branch of the Vienna-based streetwear label; and it was thought up and produced by the international shopfitting company UmDaSCH Shopfitting. They in turn secured the services of ars Electronica Solutions for the concept, design and programming – and brought Samsung austria on board as technology partner. and of course the austrian trend-setter for Urban Streetwear, RaG Handelsgesellschaft, which began in 1984 with second-hand fashions from the 1950s and 1960s; which has been successfully operating an online shop since 2011; and which now also presents and sells its range in a top shopping location in Vienna. I hope those youngsters will have finished soon. I want to test the Shopping Wall too. The fact that we no longer buy crystal balls in gloomy shops with crumpled banknotes, but sit at the kitchen table while ordering things online and then have them delivered shortly afterwards, does not necessarily mean that gazing into the crystal ball really does provide insight into the future. Everyone – the futurologists, trend scouts, retail experts and market analysts, like the consumers themselves – are in agreement that the retail sector will change more profoundly in the next ten to fifteen years than ever before. But what does that mean? Will there soon be no more shops? are we condemned to loneliness as we sit in front of our smartphones and tablets and other electronic toys, so that we can buy everything online, from an apple to a zip fastener? Will our fridges and wardrobes one day fill themselves without our help? and will “the shop-window tour” soon become an endangered concept? The prognoses are not as unequivocal as all that. Even in Frank Lloyd Wright’s day it was rather short-sighted to ignore the past and to believe that by doing so you were well on the way into the future. Numerous experts believe that in the year 2022 we shall no longer use cash to pay for things. But that does not 52 cross-channel handel gewandelt der EuroShop zu sehen. Gemäß Untersuchungen des deutschen Trendforschungsinstituts „2b aHEaD ThinkTank“ sowie einer repräsentativen Studie des Online-Bezahl- mean that the good old window-shopping tour, the searching through the shelves and the filling of a shopping basket, will only happen in the virtual world. “Online retailing,” believes, for example, Wolfgang adlwarth from the Society for Consumer Research in Nuremberg, “will not completely replace the bricks-and-mortar shops; it will complement them.” Cross-selling or multi-channel are the watchwords which describe this phenomenon. UmDaSCH Shopfitting believes that too. People have already started to develop a product that links the haptic and therefore emotional purchasing experience with online retailing opportunities. after the premiere in the RaG store the Shopping Wall can also be seen at the Umdasch stand at the EuroShop. “Through the new digital shop format, which brings the online world into the shop, customer loyalty and emotionalisation are strengthened, in order to make the Point of Sale into a Point of Confidence,” is the message in the corporate headquarters in amstetten. For me this means: I am at the point of no return. So up onto the stage! Who gets the chance to test the purchasing behaviour of the future in the present – and directly on their own body? I imagine I don’t give such a smooth performance as the young people all around me. So what. Two nice people on the light-grey flickering displays, on which stylised trees and bright yellow patches of colour can be seen, are holding cardboard placards telling me to select an item of clothing. So I do so and then obediently hold it up in front of the Shopping Wall as instructed. at that same moment the blue sweater I am holding appears on the screen. I would not have been able to find the alternative colours which I am then shown on the shelf. The Wall explains to me that some of them are currently not in stock in the shop. But since the digital presentation is based on the product range of the RaG webshop I need only run my finger over it to put the green sweater into the digital shopping basket. at the same 53 tritt der kunde an die wand, schaltet sie in den aktiven modus – die Interaktion beginnt. It sounds plausible. Online shopping may be convenient, but it is not really much fun looking at things, choosing them and trying them on in the internet. Do you still just buy things or do you experience them – that is the question. Purchasing is only one of several reasons for entering a shop. In this respect the researchers were in agreement for once: “Consumers want a personal product experience with inspiration, involvement and honesty,” says for example Norbert Wittmann from the Nymphenburg market Research Group in munich. Hanni Rützler agrees. “Discriminating customers are no longer satisfied with a supermarket that looks like a nineteenthcentury pantry,” says the nutrition expert*. and Wittmann adds: “Today’s shopper knows a great deal more and has much higher expectations.” These are increased by the numerous food scandals; customers today question the products on offer much more frequently. Benjamin Brüser (l.) and Sebastian Diehl show with their startup Emmas Enkel that corner shops and the age of the internet are not mutually exclusive. The Swiss Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute (GDI) goes one step further. Today there is still a need for information, but tomorrow according to the GDI the level of knowledge will become a distinguishing feature – and knowledge about food will become a status symbol in society. So the food retail sector is facing enormous challenges. They begin with the desire to be able to find one’s way around the supermarket quickly and easily. “Product presentation and a journey through worlds of the senses should encourage shoppers to slow down,” says Peter Prisching, the Head of Shop Consult Food & Care at UmDaSCH Shopfitting. The familiarity of the products and product ranges gives customers a feeling of security. Healthy and sustainable foodstuffs, an environmentally-friendly building and a resourcesaving operation are called for, in order to convey a responsible attitude. “The Constant Consumer doesn’t want to go shopping. he wants a suitable cooking or eating solution.” “To unite all these factors is a herculean task for the food sector, which for many years was said to think rationally and act conservatively,” observes Prisching. “The consumer” and “the format” are old hat. Food concepts must cover the needs of the customer in each particular situation and in each case. and these needs are manifold. at the centre of the development of designs for markets of the future lie experience guidance and comfort. “It begins with the architecture of the building and continues in the interior architecture. The floor plan must follow the convenience principle and the production cycle must be designed in a transparent manner. Furthermore, the interplay between the sale of food and gastronomy must be taken into account,” Prisching is convinced. emmas eNkel: aus alt mach Neu emmas eNkel: New from old Nostalgie und tradition kombinieren emmas enkel mit zeitgemäßer technologie. das konzept der firmengründer benjamin brüser und sebastian diehl beruht auf einer symbiose von online- und offline-shopping. In addition to innovative building architecture and an attractive store design it is equally a matter of classic advertising and indoor communication, of sales staff and sustainability, based on credibility and regionalism – and of course the huge topic of digitalisation: modern technology to provide help and to facilitate day-to-day shopping. For Ralf Jung, Head of the Innovative Retail Laboratory in Saarbrücken, the shopping apps which are already offered by many supermarket chains represent just the beginning. For Jung, the route to integral cross-channel retailing begins long before the technological applications; it begins, in fact, with the question as to what customers are interested in and how Das bedeute Emotionalität auf allen Ebenen des Verkaufs. Creating needs rather than fulfilling them – this solution applies more than ever to food retailers. The examples below make clear that run-of-the-mill models will no longer win over new customers. The new ways of playing are far too attractive to leave them to one’s competitors – from digital signage and interactive navigation systems within the store to virtual online shops. Despite the variety, what is also clear is that technology can only be a means to an end. The experts of the German 1000 hands aG are testing with their indoor-retail navigation app what is currently the only application which functions in real time: in two Kaiser’s Tengelmann stores in Berlin customers can produce their shopping list in comfort at home on their smartphones, and then when they are in the supermarket they can connect up with the store via WLaN – and receive immediately a suggestion for their best route between the shelves. “if you want to explain your country to a guest, take him to a supermarket. Ralf Jung believes that systems like these will soon be ready for marketing: “In ten years we shall have moved on from isolated solutions, and will be able to offer shoppers integral solutions, from the moment they enter to supermarket until they pay for the goods.” The intelligent shopping trolley, known as the “Smart Cart”, will automatically scan the products as soon as they are placed in the trolley. The smartphone will serve as a combined pen for writing things down and a shopping list, notes Jung with an eye to the near future. and sketches the scenario for tomorrow: “Tablets which are mounted on the shopping trolley or the shelves will lure customers with personalised offers. “Traditional points of sale and online shopping fuse to create one big, diverse shopping landscape.” Depending on the time of day or the season, they can focus on different products. at the cash desk you can check out using an NFC-compatible smartphone and without the annoying need for unloading and reloading the shopping trolley. By then contactless payment will have replaced our EC and credit cards.” What some experts see with regard to ultra-modern in-store animation and communication, others see as online shopping with home delivery. Nur 21 Prozent der deutschen Konsumenten können sich demnach vorstellen, Produkte des täglichen Bedarfs im Internet zu kaufen. bp stations – together with drive-in opportunities – will take over the function of collecting stations for the food retail sector. With their round-the-clock opening times they fit in with the convenience requirements of the population. Futurologist Norbert Wittmann advises that new food concepts should be introduced at the point of sale. “Don’t start with the delivery, but start with the collection.” against a background of increasing digitalisation, the human factor is an inestimable advantage. Because qualified and friendly staff will ensure a customer loyalty which no online company can match. Wittman sees the concentration on strengths and specialities, rarities and regionalism as further advantages. There are apparently no limits to inventiveness in the sphere of emotionality and efficiency, convenience and digital elements. Wittmann is convinced that “the chance for bricks-and-mortar retailing to survive lies in the return to the old mercantile virtues, in reinventing the core business in the real world and in linking it with the possibilities of the online world, which promises autonomy and speed.” according to a current investigation by the business consultants KPmG, classic online shopping currently still plays only a minor role in the retail sector. My last word: the polarity in the retail sector will increase still more in future. on the one hand people look for convenience – fast, convenient, plannable –, and on the other the consumer is willing to be persuaded by emotions and experiences. I find the retail sector so fascinating because it reflects the variety of human life with its products and services, and thus serves as a mirror for society and our values. at the moment I find that the most visionary retail concepts are the niche concepts which are developing, for example in Berlin, Rotterdam and New York. The real revolution in retailing is being brought about by individualists, by newcomers and small businesses which have not experienced the strait-jacket of the retail sector. They bring local colour into their shops and strengthen the romantic effect in retailing – the counterpart to technology and digitalisation. when I think of the future of our sector, I see – like a traffic light – red for the pure administrators and bureaucrats, green for the bold and creative members and yellow for the rest. online-shopping will soon be superfluous as a term, because online shopping will simply become normal. the bricks-and-mortar retail sector in ten years will in my view be influenced by three important factors: smart technologies will change the jobs market and purchasing behaviour; demography will transform the demands made of mobility; and the accents of the debt crisis and the increasing instability will alter completely the financial foundations of the Western world. “The age of Less”* will remain a topic. “Retail always has to do with mind, heart and intelligence.” For convenience shopping down the road I prefer to go to... I am really a slow shopper. For professional reasons, first of all I like to get the feeling for a shop, to take in the mood – and then enjoy the shopping experience. The first five seconds are decisive as to whether a shop attracts me or whether it drives me back out onto the street again. If there is something I don’t need as a customer, then it is: staff who are in a bad mood, music in the lifts and sales areas which smell horrid. In my private life I like to treat myself to good food, because my wife and I are both passionate cooks. and I also find really good luggage important. I find it okay if a leather bag costs a bit more than average. I, david bosshart, would describe myself as a hybrid consumer who sees things with a professional and a private eye when walking through a shop. * David Bosshart: The Age of less.
