Boljun - the key to
ancient Istria
Boljun - der Schlüssel des
antiken Istriens
The area of Boljun hides many
traces from all periods of Istria’s
history. Prehistoric and ancient
Boljun was situated at the very
site of today’s settlement. This is
a protruding ridge with the highest point at 254 metres above
sea level. It offers splendid and
unobstructed views of Učka and
Boljun field. In ancient times
Boljun was the first fortress in
Histria. The Roman road from
ancient Plomin passed below
Boljun. It truly was the key to
Istria for those who invaded
Istria arriving from Učka. If the
fortress wasn’t seized, all attempts to conquer Istria from
this direction were in vain.
Das Gebiet um Boljun hält zahlreiche Spuren aus allen Zeiten der alten istrischen
Geschichte verborgen. Das vorhistorische
und antike Boljun befand sich an der
gleichen Stelle, wie auch die heutige Ortschaft. Es handelt sich um einen hervorragenden Bergkamm in einer Höhe von 254
m ü.M., von deren Hügeln sich ein weiter
und klarer Blick auf die Gebirgslandschaft
des Učka und Boljunsko Polje ausbreitet.
In der Antike war Boljun die erste Festung
in Histrien. Unterhalb von Boljun führte die
römische Straße, die im antiken Plomin
begann. Dies war tatsächlich der Schlüssel
Istriens für die Völker, die vorhatten, vom
Berg Učka aus Istrien zu erobern. Solange
die Festung stand hielt war jede weitere
Anstrengung zur Eroberung aus dieser
Richtung vergebens.

Bread and games
Gladiator fights and fights using military and fighting skills and tools were well-known and common
forms of entertainment for those living in Ancient
Rome. They developed alongside religion so the
first gladiator’s fights that were held in Rome in
264 a.C. were a part of the patrician funeral ritual:
During their father’s funeral, Marcus and Decimus
Brutus organized fights between three pairs of
slaves as a sacrifice to the Gods.
The original name ‘gladiator’ comes from gladius
- which is a short Roman’s sword, although we
differentiate between a few basic types of gladiator by their equipment, arms and way of fighting.
Mirmillones, Samnites, Gals and Thraces wore iron
or bronze helmets, armour, a shield and a sword
or a short dagger. Retiarii fought by throwing nets
and with tridents, but no shield and helmet. Secutores had only a gladius and a oblong shield on
their foot while Saggitarii had bows and arrows.
Bestiarii fought with beasts while Essedari fought
in war-chariots pulled by horses.
Gladiators pompously entered the scene of the
contest, greeting distinguished persons with the
salutation: “Ave, Cesar, morituri te salutant…” (“Hail,
Caesar, those who are about to die salute you...“).
Worn out during the fight, they could either wheedle out a pardon or were sentenced to death if

Gladiatorenkämpfe, also Kämpfe unter Anwendung
von militärischen und kämpferischen Fertigkeiten und
Werkzeugen, waren eine bekannte Volksbelustigung
im alten Rom. Sie entwickelten sich parallel zur Religion, und so waren auch die ersten in Rom im Jahr
264 v.Chr. abgehaltenen Gladiatorenspiele, eigentlich
ein Teil eines adligen Beerdigungsrituals: Marcus und
Decimus Brutus organisierten während der Beerdigung
des Vaters als Opfergabe für die Götter, Kämpfe dreier
Sklavenpaare.
Der ursprüngliche Begriff Gladiator stammt von gladius - einem kurzen römischen Stoßschwert, obwohl
nach Ausrüstung, Bewaffnung und Kampfart mehrere
Hauptgattungen von Gladiatoren zu unterscheiden
sind. Murmillos, Samniten, Gallier und Thraex trugen
einen eisernen oder bronzenen Helm, Harnisch, Schild
und Schwert oder kurzen Dolch. Die Retiarii kämpften
mit Hilfe von Wurfnetzen und einem Dreizack, ohne
Schutzpanzer und Helm. Die Secutoren waren lediglich
mit einem Dolch und einem Schild am linken Bein ausgerüstet, die Sagittarii mit Pfeil und Bogen. Die Bestiarii
kämpften mit Raubtieren, und die Essedarii auf von
Pferden gezogenen Streitwagen.
Der feierliche Einmarsch der Gladiatoren auf den
Kampfplatz erfolgte durch einen Tunnel, und danach
begrüßten sie die Prominenten mit dem Gruß: “Viva
Caesar, die Todgeweihten grüßen dich…”. Die durch

Vižula - unexpected
archaeological
discoveries
In the unexplored part of the residential Roman villa built in the period from the 1st to 6th century,
at Vižula peninsula near Medulin,
an exquisitely preserved wellness centre has been discovered.
The recreational-thermal complex,
where the cult of body and soul was
observed with unusual and exceptionally beautiful floor mosaic, is the
largest in this part of Europe. In addition to their beauty, the villa and
wellness area also stand out by the
technologically perfect heating and
cooling system.
In the villa, under the layer of quick
lime and mortar, unusual remains of
Istrian primordial cattle have been
found, which is believed to be 1300
years old, most probably used during mystic rituals.

Vižula
Im unerforschten Teil einer exklusiven
römischen Wohnvilla, die in der Zeit
zwischen dem 1. und 6. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde, fand man auf der Halbinsel
Vižula bei Medulin eine perfekt erhalten
gebliebene antike Wellness-Einrichtung.
Dieser Erholungs- und Thermalkomplex
in dem der Kult der Seele und des Körpers gepflegt wurde, ist, mit seinen ungewöhnlichen Bodenmosaiken von einmaliger Schönheit, der größte in diesem
Teil Europas.
In der Villa wurden unterhalb einer
festen Kalk- und Putzschicht auch ungewöhnliche Spuren eines 1.300 Jahre
alten istrischen Urrinds gefunden, das
vermutlich mystischen rituellen Zeremoniellen diente.

Sv. Lovreč
Town loggias began to appear
in the late medieval period, with the
strengthening of urban culture. This
was the meeting place of townspeople, place where decisions were reached by the town authorities. They
were used for all forms of public life.
If loggias were located outside the
walls beside the entrance towers
or gate, they offered shelter to passengers when the town gate was
closed.
Beleveder (Novigrad), this
is the only loggia in Istria that is situated by the sea. It probably rests on
an older part of the defensive walls
(ruins of a tower). Presumably constructed in the 16th century, the Loggia was renewed in the years 1860
and 1930. Originally it had a hipped
roof. To the West of the Loggia, the
vaulted passage Porta a marina leads
to the sea.
Poreč
Die Stadtlogen gibt es in diesen kleinen Städtchen erst seit Ende
des Mittelalters, als die urbane Kultur
stärker wurde. Sie waren Orte, wo
sich die Bürger versammeln und Stadtväter die wichtigen Entscheidungen
treffen konnten: In allen Formen des
öffentlichen Lebens spielen sie eine
große Rolle. Falls sie sich außerhalb
der Stadtmauern befanden, dienten
sie Reisenden als Zufluchtsort, wenn
das Stadttor geschlossen war.
Belvedere, die einzige Loggia in
ganz Istrien, die am Meeresufer liegt.
Sie ruht wahrscheinlich auf der älteren Struktur der Verteidigungsmauern
(den Trümmern eines Turms). Es wird
angenommen, dass die Loggia im 16.
Jh. gebaut wurde, und in den Jahren
1860 und 1930 wurde sie erneuert.
Ursprünglich hatte sie ein Walmdach.
Westlich neben der Loggia befindet
sich der gewölbte Durchgang Porta a
marina, der zum Meer herab führt.
Poreč bishop Gaspar Negri
Gaspar Negri was a well-known Istrian figure from
the 18th century. He was born in Venice in 1697
as a member of a Venetian noble family and in
1742 he became the bishop of Poreč. Bishop Gaspar Negri indebted Poreč in many ways. He undertook comprehensive reconstruction work on the
Basilica of Euphrasius and its inventory, and also
opened a seminary. He was especially engaged in
the construction of the new altar of SS. Maurus and
Eleuterio in the Basilica. Bishop Negri possessed a
rich collection of archaeological items and library
with manuscripts that he collected. He is buried in
the right nave of the Basilica of Euphrasius.
Tar
Today’s toponym Tar derives from the Latin Turris
which means tower and refers to the steady military and strategic function of the village. During
the Middle Ages this village was named Turrim
and developed socially and economically in close
connection with two nearby urban and Episcopal
centres, Poreč and Novigrad. In the early Middle
Ages, Tar was the feudal property of the bishops
of Poreč while from the10th to the 12th century it
belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael
(Sv. Mihovil) Underground.
Porečer Bischof Gaspar Negri
ist eine namhafte istrische Persönlichkeit des 18.
Jahrhunderts. Im Jahr 1697 in Venedig geboren,
als Angehöriger einer venezianischen Adelsfamilie, wurde er im Jahr 1742 zum Bischof von Poreč.
Seine Verdienste in Poreč waren verschiedenartig.
Er unternahm umfassende Arbeiten zur Renovierung der Euphrasius-Basilika und deren Inventar
und eröffnete ein Pfandhaus und Pristerseminar. Er
war besonders engagiert bei der Errichtung eines
neuen Altars des hl. Mauro und Eleuterius in der
Euphrasius-Basilika. Der Bischof Negri besaß eine
reiche Sammlung archäologischer Gegenstände
und ein Büchlein angefüllt mit Handschriften, die
er selber gesammelt hatte. Er wurde in der Euphrasius-Basilika, im rechten Kirchenschiff beigesetzt.
Tar Der heutige Ortsname Tar stammt vom lateinischen Begriff Turris, und bedeutet Turm, was
auf die Existenz einer militärstrategischen Funktion
dieser Ortschaft hinweist. In der Zeit des Mittelalters wurde die Ortschaft Turrim genannt, die gesellschaftlich und wirtschaftlich in enger Verbindung
mit der Entwicklung der beiden nahegelegenen
urbanen Bischofszentren Poreč und Novigrad heranwuchs. In der Zeit des frühen Mittelalters war
Tar ein Feudalbesitz des Porečer Bistums, und zwischen dem 10. und 12. Jahrhundert gehörte es der
Benediktinerabtei „Hl. Michaelis unter der Erde“.

How did the

First ornithological park in Istria
In Palud cove, 8 kilometres southwest of Rovinj,
is the only ornithological park in Istria. Palud is
a natural depression in close vicinity to the sea,
which because of the inflow of water from the
surrounding hills and plateaus, as well as springs
on the northern side has turned into a swamp. In
1906 when there was an Austro-Hungarian military
base in Barbariga, a 200-meter-long canal was dug
from the swamp to the sea. By connecting the sea
and swamp Palud gained its new inhabitants such
as grey mullet and eel, fish that are found in areas where seawater mixes with freshwater. Older
people of the Rovinj area recall seeing even other
species of fish in the swamp that came in search of
food. The great variety and number of resident and
migratory bird species is surely the most important
feature of this unique swamp.

Erster Vogelpark in Istrien
In der Talsenke Palud, 8 Kilometer südwestlich von
Rovinj, befindet sich der bis jetzt einzige Vogelpark
in Istrien. Palud ist eine natürliche Landsenke in
unmittelbarer Nähe des Meeres, die sich, wegen
des Wasserzuflusses von den sie umgebenden Hügeln und dem höher gelegenen Plateau und aus
der Quelle auf der Nordseite, in ein Sumpfgebiet
verwandelte. Im Jahr 1906, als die Armee der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie in Barbariga ihren
Stützpunkt hatte, wurde vom Sumpfgebiet bis zum
Meer ein Kanal in einer Länge 200 Meter gegraben.
Durch die Verbindung des Sumpfgebiets mit dem
Meer bekam Palud neue Bewohner. Kennzeichnend
für dieses Sumpfgebiet ist der Vogelreichtum, sowohl den Arten als auch der Anzahl der Vögel nach,
die hier ständig oder vorübergehend ihre Wohnstätte haben.

Long ago in Istria people and giants lived together and the strongest of them was Ban Dragonja
who was as tall as a mountain. People asked him
to use his strength to irrigate the parched areas
as at that time, in most of northern Istria there
were thick lakes and swamps. There were neither streams nor springs anywhere else. Dragonja complied with their requests and ploughed
furrows from the lake to the sea. The first furrow
made a whole river that he named after himself,
Dragonja. The next day he ploughed the second
furrow and made a new, more beautiful river
which he named after his wife, Mirna. While
ploughing the third furrow that he planned to
name after his daughter, Draga, he arrived at the
walls of Pazin’s castle in the heart of Istria where
the spouse of Pazin’s captain started to mock
him and tell him that his ploughs were shallow
and his furrow tortuous.
He felt offended, shouldered a plough and drove
the oxen back. Through the unfinished furrow
gushed water which started to flood Pazin’s
ravine. Pazin’s inhabitants then started begging
Dragonja to rescue them. He kicked the ground
under the cliff on which the castle was built and
with a terrible roaring, sound it started to sink. A
huge basin opened up and instead of a third river
a tortuous Pazinčica arose. Today, its water still
disappears without trace underneath the castle,
in a basin known as Pazinska jama.
In vergangenen Zeiten lebten in Istrien zusammen mit den Menschen auch Riesen. Der
stärkste unter ihnen war der Ban Dragonja, der
so groß wie ein Gebirge war. Er wurde von den
Menschen gebeten zu helfen, die wasserarmen
Gebiete mit seinen Kräften zu bewässern, denn
zu jenen Zeiten erstreckten sich zum größten Teil
im Norden von Istrien trübe Seen und Sumpfgebiete, und an anderen Stellen gab es weder
Bäche noch Wasserquellen. Um ihnen diesen
Wunsch zu erfüllen, pflügte Dragonja Furchen
vom See bis zum Meer. Durch die erste Furche
entstand ein ganzer Fluss, den der nach sich
selber benannte, Dragonja. Am nächsten Tag
pflügte er eine zweite Furche, wodurch ein neuer und noch schönerer Fluss entstand, den er
Mirna, nach seiner Frau, benannte. Als er beim
Pflügen der dritten Furche, die er Draga, nach
seiner Tochter nennen wollte, bis unterhalb der
Mauern des Paziner Kastells kam, im Herzen von
Istrien, fing die Frau des Paziner Kapitäns zu sticheln an, er würde die Furche zu flach und nicht
gerade genug pflügen.
Er fühlte sich daraufhin beleidigt, nahm den Pflug
auf die Schultern und trieb die Ochsen zurück,
wobei aus der unvollendeten Furche Wasser heraussprudelte und den Paziner Talkessel zu überschwemmen drohte. Die Leute von Pazin flehten
Dragonja an, sie zu retten. Daraufhin stieß er seinen Fuß in die Erde, unmittelbar unterhalb der
Klippen, über denen sich das Kastell erhob, und
mit einem fürchterlichen Lärm begann die Erde
abzusacken. Es öffnete sich eine riesige Höhle,
und anstelle des dritten Flusses, beginnt sich das
Bächlein Pazinčica zu schlängeln, dessen Wasser
bis zum heutigen Tage spurlos unter dem Kastell
verschwindet, in ein Schluckloch, das die Paziner
Höhle darstellt.

Feštini, Žminj
In the very heart of Istria, near the village Feštini,
close to Žminj, the cave Kingdom of Feštini surely
stands out by its natural beauties. Upon entering
the cave, first you hear the harmonious sound of
drops that from times immemorial have been creating magnificent underground jewellery reflected
in the reservoir lakes below.
To make it accessible to visitors there are safe paths in the interior of the cave, which is about 80
metres deep. The cave abounds in wonderful dripstone forms, among which it is easy to recognize
“the magician’s hat”, “Tower of Babylon” and huge
“bat wings” strangely covered with grapevine that
gets its water from the bottom of the cave.
By visiting this “kingdom” apart from the beauty
that lies hidden below, you can also enjoy the idyllic
scenery together with facilities such as children’s
park, mini farm, bar and souvenir shop.

Feštinsko kraljevstvo (Feštini)
Im Herzen von Istrien, nahe des Dorfes Feštini,
unweit von Žminj, zeichnet sich durch ihre natürliche Schönheit die Höhle „Feštinsko kraljevstvo“
(Königreich von Feštini) aus. Beim Betreten dieser
Höhle hört man zuerst die harmonischen Töne von
Wassertropfen, die seit Menschengedenken einen
herrlichen unterirdischen Schmuck schaffen, unter
dem sich ein Teich aus Tropfwasser spiegelt.
Damit sie für Besucher zugänglich ist, wurden im
Innern der Höhle etwa 80 Meter tiefe, sichere Wege
angelegt. Die Höhle ist auch reich an wunderschönen Tropfsteinformen, unter denen Sie leicht einen
‚Zauberhut‘, den ‚Turm von Baylon‘ und riesige
‚Fledermausflügel‘ wiedererkennen werden, die
seltsam anmutend von einem Wurzelzweig einer
Weinrebe verdeckt werden, die sich ihr Wasser aus
dem Boden der Höhle holt.
Beim Besuch dieses ‚Königreichs‘, können Sie
neben den Schönheiten der Unterwelt auch die
idyllische Landschaft bestaunen, mit zusätzlichen
Angeboten wie dem Kinderpark, einer Minifarm und
Bar sowie einem Souvenirladen.

Walking trail Labin-Rabac
is part of the protected landscape Labin-Rabac-Prklog and is a real gem worth seeing. The trail is relatively short, yet exceptionally beautiful, immersed in
the lush sub-Mediterranean vegetation. A special
attraction and beauty of this trail is constant crisscrossing with a wonderful (unnamed) stream that
flows from Labin’s plateau, on its way forming a
number of waterfalls and small lakes. After immersing into the luxuriant vegetation, only the sound of
water reveals the presence of this hidden secret - a
beautiful stream with clear and cold water, with a
dozen of small wooden bridges crossing it.
The trail has 15 characteristic points where you
should surely stop, and two rest areas with stone
tables and benches. The loveliest time is May when
cyclamen in bloom cover the ground with a lively
pink colour and fill the air with the sweet smell of
spring. In addition to cyclamen, which are a protected species, this area has several characteristic
autochthonous sub-Mediterranean species, mainly
in the upper part of the trail, whereas in the lower
part, close to the coast, there are elements of eumediterranean vegetation.

Der Wanderweg Labin-Rabac ist ein Teil der
geschützten Landschaft Labin-Rabac-Prklog und
eine echte bewundernswürdige Perle. Der Weg
ist verhältnismäßig kurz aber außergewöhnlich
schön, eingebettet in einer dichten für das kältere
und feuchtere Mittelmeerklima charakteristischen
submediterranen Vegetation. Das, was diesem
Wanderweg einen besonderen Reiz verleiht, ist sein
mehrmaliges Zusammentreffen mit einem anziehenden (namenlosen) Bächlein, das vom Labiner
Plateau herunterfließt und auf seinem Weg mehrere
Wasserfälle und Teiche bildet. Erst das Rauschen
des Wassers, das sich aus der dichten Vegetation
bemerkbar macht, deutet auf die Begegnung mit
dem herrlichen Bächlein hin, in dem ein klares, kaltes und reines Wasser fließt, und das an etwa zehn
Stellen mit kleinen Holzbrückchen überbrückt wird.
Der Wanderweg hat 15 charakteristische Punkte, an
denen man unbedingt stehen bleiben sollte, sowie
zwei Rastplätze mit Steintischen und Bänken für
eine Ruhepause. Am schönsten ist es im Mai, wenn
Alpenveilchen den Boden mit ihren lebhaften lila
und rosa Farben bedecken, und die Luft mit einem

Because of the great number of harmony singing groups interested in participating in the Festival, once again this year there will be two festival nights: evening of women’s harmony singing
groups on Friday, and on Saturday - the evening
of men’s harmony singing groups. Only groups
from Istria can take part in this festival. Each
harmony-singing group sings two songs, and the
jury decides who the best groups are. A special
award is also given for the song with elements
of Istrian-Primorje melodic expression.

Auch in diesem Jahr gibt es, wegen der großen Zahl der
interessierten Sängergruppen („Klapa“), die am Festival
teilnehmen möchten, zwei Abende des Volksgesangs:
der Abend der Frauenchöre findet am Freitag - der
Abend der Männerchöre am Samstag statt. Das Recht
zur Teilnahme am Wettbewerb haben nur Sängergruppen und Liederchöre aus Istrien. Jede Gruppe trägt
zwei Stücke vor, und über die besten entscheidet ein
fachbezogenes Preisgericht. Ein besonderer Preis geht
auch an die Interpreten eines Stücks mit Elementen
einer istrischen-nordadriatischen Melodie.

The little medieval town of Roč is a very lively
cultural centre, one of its central events being
the Meeting of trieština players (small diatonic
accordions). In addition to the attractive and
energetic performance of accordion players
there are also singers and players of other
traditional musical instruments included in the
programme. This event also attracts accordion
players from Italy, Slovenia and Austria. To create a festive and friendly atmosphere, there is
tasting of wine, brandy, honey and pastries.

die ‚unter dem Regenbogen‘ auf istrischen Volksinstrumenten spielen - dem „Bajs“, der „Trieština“, dem „Mih“,

Das kleine mittelalterliche Städtchen Roč ist ein außergewöhnlich aktiver kultureller Mittelpunkt, und eine der
wichtigsten Veranstaltungen ist das Treffen der Musiker
auf den kleinen diatonischen Harmonikas, den Trieština.
Der attraktive und energische Auftritt der Harmonikaspieler wird inhaltlich auch durch Zusatzauftritte von Sängern
und Musikern anderer traditioneller Instrumente bereichert, wobei die Bedeutung dieser Darbietung auch durch
die Ankunft von Harmonikaspielern aus Italien, Slowenien
und Österreich unterstrichen wird, mit ähnlicher musikalischer Ausdrucksweise. Das gesamte Ereignis wird zum
Aufheizen der Atmosphäre mit Weinproben heimischer
Weine, Schnäpsen, Honig und Kuchen begleitet.

“I’m off to the Gandusio”, is a common expression in Rovinj when going to the theatre. But, few people
know that it is in fact the name of
one of the greatest Italian theatre
and film comedians of Novecento,
the character of numerous brilliant
caricatures in the daily papers of
his time, born in Rovinj in 1873.
Gandusiana includes a series of
concerts that you will listen to and
watch not only at the Gandusio.
The concept of Gandusiana develops around music that reconsiders
the boundaries of its own genre
and consequently the sense of
origin and existence. This explains
the choice of musicians who over
and over again set their creative
axis outside the definition of musical style and influence, without
creative limitations, yet always remaining in intimate contact with
oneself.
“Gren u Gandusio”, sagt man in Rovinj wenn man ins Theater geht. Nur
wenige wissen, dass dies gleichzeitig auch der Name eines der größten Theater- und Filmkomiker des
italienischen novecento ist, die
Gestalt zahlreicher brillanter Karikaturen der täglichen Presse seiner
Zeit und geboren eben in Rovinj im
Jahre 1873.
Das Konzept der Gandusiana entsteht um den Begriff der Musik,
welche die Grenzen des eigenen
Genres und damit auch den Sinn
ihres Entstehens und Bestehens
erfragt. Daher die Auswahl der
Musiker, welche ihre kreative Achse
von Neuem und ständig außerhalb
der Definition eines musikalischen
Stils und Einflusses stellen, ohne
kreative Begrenzungen, aber immer in intimer Berührung mit sich
selber - eine Qualität die uns ohne
Rücksicht auf individuellen musikalischen Geschmack und Vorlieben
mitnimmt.

To prevent it from being completely forgotten,
traditional Istrian music is once again presented
at the workshop of violin players or other traditional instruments - bajs (double bass), clarinet and
trieština (diatonic button accordion). Regardless of
the musician’s skill and knowledge, this workshop
is open for all comers. Participant will present all
their accomplishments during the 3rd meeting
called Z vijulin sopu muškardini.

In Istrian musical tradition the term organić refers
to a musical instrument that is commonly known
as harmonica. With its simple appearance and relatively modest music potential it has been a favourite Istrian instrument since the mid-19th century.
Gračišće, one of some thirty town-jewels of central
Istria has become the cradle of the newly awoken
love for organić. The first gathering of musicians
was held in 1996 when 23 players from entire Istria
took part. Every year on the third Sunday in May
there is an increasing number of organić devotees
arriving in Gračišće for this unique event.

Um die traditionelle istrische Musik nicht in Vergessenheit geraten zu lassen, hat sie ihren Platz in einem Workshop für Violinespieler und anderer traditioneller Instrumente gefunden - Bajs, Klarinette oder
Trieština. Ungeachtet dessen, ob jemand auf diesen
Instrumenten spielen kann oder nicht, die Türe dieses Workshop steht für alle Interessierte offen. Das
erworbene Wissen wird den Besuchern während
des 3. Treffens von „Z vijulin sopu muškardini“ vorgestellt.
Spielen wir auf
der Mundharmonika
Unter dem Begriff „organić“, versteht man in der
istrischen Musiktradition ein Instrument, dessen
übliche Bezeichnung Mundharmonika ist. Dieses
einfach gestaltete Instrument mit einem relativ bescheidenen musikalischen Potential, war in Istrien
bereits Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beliebt. Gračišće,
eines von etwa dreißig Städtchen, die als Kleinod
von Zentralistrien bezeichnet werden können, wurde
zur Wiege einer neuerwachten Liebe zur Mundharmonika. Das erste Treffen der Mundharmonikaspieler fand im Jahr 1996 statt, als 23 Mundharmonikaspieler aus ganz Istrien vertreten waren.

Old crafts:
Weaving bottles and baskets
Old crafts are becoming folklore riches thanks to
devotees of artistic and creative expression of ancient everyday objects. Weaving bottles, so-called
kjanti, was once needed to prevent bottles from
being broken when carried into the fields.
Weaved bottles were very practical for carrying
since they had a handle. They were most often
used during the work in fields. Baskets used for
carrying potatoes, eggs and apples were also woven. Such baskets were used for everything that
had to be picked, collected or transported. Baskets
were once woven in the form of a 40-liter dosser,
flat on one side and rounded on the other and as
such were carried by donkeys. Beke, which was
used for weaving, is a special kind of willow that
grows only in Istria.

Alte Handwerkerberufe:
Flechten von Flaschen und Körben
Das Umflechten von Flaschen war früher erforderlich, damit die Flasche, wenn sie aufs Feld mitgenommen wurde, nicht zerbrach. Umflochtene Flaschen waren sehr praktisch zum Tragen, denn sie
hatten Griffe. Am Nützlichsten waren Sie bei der
Arbeit auf dem Feld. Auch Körbe für die Kartoffelernte, zum Tragen von Eiern, Äpfeln usw. wurden
geflochten. Sie wurden zu allem verwendet, was
gepflückt oder getragen wurde. Früher wurden Körbe auch in Form von Tragen bzw. Bütten in einer
Größe von 40 Liter geflochten, die auf der einen
Seite flach und auf der anderen Seite bauchig waren und als solche auf dem Rücken eines Esels
befestigt wurden. Die Rauten, mit denen geflochten
wird, wachsen auf einer nur in Istrien verbreiteten
Weidengattung, ähnlich der Korbweide.
Blacksmith and wagon Das Schmiede - und Wagmaker’s trade
nerhandwerk
Some hundred years ago blacksmiths were recognized as artisans. Blacksmith workshops were
equipped with all the needed
blacksmith and wagon maker’s
tools, bellows, anvil, and other such
equipment. A skilled wagon maker
was able to make a quality wagon
that was drawn by a horse, ox or
donkey. In order to make such a
wagon he also had to know the
secrets of the blacksmith’s trade.
Wagon makers made new wagons,
but also repaired old ones or made
certain parts. The blacksmith workshop with complete blacksmith and
wagon maker’s inventory is one of
the five ethnographic workshop
displays belonging to the Regional
Museum of Buzeština.
Schmiede waren vor etwa hundert Jahren sehr geschätzte Handwerker. Eine
Schmiede war mit allen erforderlichen
Schmiede- und Wagenbauer-Werkzeugen, einem Balg, Amboss und anderem Zubehör ausgestattet. Ein guter
Schmied musste erstklassige Gepanne
zum Vorspannen von Pferden, Rindern
oder Eselb bauen können, und um dies
zu können, musste er auch die Geheimnisse der Schiedekunst kennen. Wagenbauer bzw. Wagner erstellten neue Wagen, haben aber auch alte Fuhrwerke
repariert oder nur einzelne Teile von
Fuhrwerken hergestellt. Eine vollkommen erhalten gebliebene Schmiede mit
dem kompletten Schiede- und WagnerInventar ist eine der fünf Werstätten
die zum Heimatmuseum des Gebiets
Buzets gehören.

Easter or locally known as Vazan
is an important religious feast celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
It is customary to wear something
new on that day. Since Easter is a
holiday celebrating a new beginning
and rebirth, which coincides with
the beginning of spring, so people
are symbolically revived through
new clothing. On Easter people
bring food to church to be blessed
during the early morning mass. Traditionally, children couldn’t wait for
Easter to come since on that day
they would eat pinca, Easter bread
or cake, play with dyed Easter eggs
and get a few coins, the luckiest
ones would even get a new piece
of clothing. For Easter lunch lamb
goulash was prepared, those who
couldn’t afford lamb were satisfied
with fuži (type of pasta), kapuz (sauerkraut) and chicken.
Ostern oder das Osterfest ist der Tag,
an dem die Auferstehung Christi gefeiert wird. Es ist Brauch, zu Ostern neue
Kleidung anzulegen. Da Ostern das Fest
des Neuanfangs und der Erneuerung
ist, und da der Frühling im Anzug ist,
möchte sich auch der Mensch durch
neue Kleidung symbolisch erneuern.
An Ostern findet früh morgens der
Gottesdienst statt, zu dem Speisen gebracht werden, die gesegnet werden
sollen. Kinder haben immer ungeduldig auf Ostern gewartet, weil es dann
den Rosinenkuchen gab, also ein Osterbrot oder Osterkuchen, sie spielten
mit Eiern und erhielten auch zuweilen
ein Geldstück, und die Glücklicheren
bekamen auch so manches neue Kleidungsstück. Zur Ostermahlzeit gab es
Lammgulasch, doch derjenige, der sich
kein Lammfleisch leisten konnte, war
auch mit den Nudeln Fuži, Kohl und
Hühnchen zufrieden.

People in Istria have always stone for their
works of art, as well as everyday objects slates for the construction of dry stone field

crowns of wells.
And what about the iron? Apart from being used for making farming tools, it was
imaginatively used for decorative details on
doorways, fireplaces and wells which in addition to the year of construction very often
indicated the owner’s name.
In Savičenta there are some fifteen wells,
one of which dates from 1808 and is situated in one of the most beautiful squares in
Istria. The column of the main well served
as a support for tin drainpipes that carried
the water from the roofs of nearby houses
to a tank.
Der Mensch in Istrien verwendete schon immer für alle
seine Kunstwerke und täglichen Gebrauchsgegenstände
den Stein - den Schieferstein zum Bau der Steinhütte, der
Wände und Dächer, und der harte, in Blöcke geschnittene
Stein, aus dem er Steingefäße für Öl meiselte, Verzierungen an den Häusern oder ‘Hälse’ für die Zisterne.
Und Eisen? Dies verwendete er außer zur Herstellung von
landwirtschaflichen Werkzeugen auch für die phantasiereiche Verzierung von Hauseingängen, an Feuerstellen und
Zisternen, auf denen neben dem Herstellungsjahr auch oft
der Name des Eigentümers eingemeiselt war.
In Savičenta gibt es an die fünfzehn Zisternen, und eine im
Jahr 1808 erbaute, wurde auf einem der schönsten Marktplätze in Istrien aufgestellt. Die Säule an der Hauptzisterne
diente als Träger von Regentraufen, die das Regenwasser von den Dächern der umliegenden Häuser bis zum
Wasserspeicher leiteten. Die Bewohner von Svetvinčenat
sind stolz auf ihre Zisternen, die neben den praktischen
Gründen auch ein wichtiges Element zur Gestaltung der
Mittelpunkte von Stadt- und Dorfplätzen sind.

events organized in Istria during the year is certainly Istrian asparagus days. Asparagus, the hidden

offer of the Peninsula.
Unter die zahlreichen kulturellen, sportlichen und
gastronomischen Ereignissen, an denen es in Istrien im Laufe des Jahres nicht fehlt, fallen als bedeutende Veranstaltung auch die Istrischen Spargeltage. Dieser zwischen dem Spargelkraut versteckte,
gesunde Stengel, lädt zur angenehmen Geselligkeit
während des Pfückens, aber auch zum Probieren
dieser Spezialität ein, die sicherlich das reiche Gastroangebot dieser Halbinsel komplettiert.
Miraculous dandelions
The dandelion is one of the most widespread
medicinal plants in Istria. It’s well-known yellow
composite flowers grow individually on tall, hollow
stalks without any leaves. It blooms from spring to
autumn, and the medicinal components in various
parts of the plant change depending on season.
Dandelion leaves are collected for tea in summer,
while roots are best in spring. In early spring before
blooming, dandelion greens are collected and used
as a delicious salad rich in vitamin C.

Das Wundermittel Löwenzahn
Der Löwenzahn ist eines der weitverbreitetsten
Heilpflanzen in Istrien. Sie blühen vom Frühjahr bis
zum Herbst, und die Heilstoffe in den einzelnen
Pflanzenteilen ändern sich mit der Jahreszeit. Blätter für Tees werden im Sommer gepflückt und die
Wurzel im Frühjahr. Der Löwenzahn wird zu Beginn des Frühlings, vor der Blüte gepflückt und als
schmackhafter Vitamin C-reicher Salat zubereitet.

What is Istrian cuisine?
Is it composed of dishes that were
eaten by Istrian field labourers in the
distant past? Or those once served
in patrician houses?
Or is it the food that is today served
on Istrian tables? The wealth of this
cuisine is not at all negligable. Istria’s
turbulent past has certainly left a
trace on its cuisine. Various traditions
are interwoven in the local cuisine,
which is based on nature (aromatic
spices, wild growing plants, vegetables, seafood...).
However, all dishes that were brought
to these areas bear a characteristic
stamp. The preparation of food has
always been characterized by exceptional imagination, since- with few
ingredients a great amount of love,
effort and above all culinary imagination must be put in to make the dish
even more appealing.
Was ist die
istrische Küche?
Sind das Speisen, die in alten Zeiten
istrische Bauern aßen? Oder wurden
sie einst in Patrizierhäusern zubereitet? Oder sind das doch Speisen, die
man heute in den istrischen Eßzimmern findet? Der Reichtum dieser
Küche ist nicht gering. Die bewegte
istrische Vergangenheit hat Spuren
in der Kochkunst hinterlassen. Verschiedene Traditionen finden sich in
der Küche des Volkes wieder, deren
Grundlage die Natur ist (aromatische
Gewürze, wilde Gewächse, Gemüse,
Meeresfrüchte...).
Die Zubereitung der Speisen war
schon immer durch außergewöhnliche Phantasie bestimmt, weil man
mit wenigen Ingredienzen, sehr viel
Liebe, Mühe und vor allem Kochphantasie einbringen muß, um das Essen
noch anziehender zu machen.

When among Italian, Slovene or
Croatian olive growers you happen to mention the Bible of olive
oil, few are those who don’t immediately think of the Guida agli
Extravergini or the Guidebook to
extra-virgin olive oil which for the
8th year in a row is published by
the International Slow Food Association.
For years the Association’s eminent experts have been analyzing,
tasting and then evaluating Italian,
Slovene and Croatian oils which
are then included in the 15,000
copies of this prestigious guidebook.
At the moment of evaluating, olive growers have to meet the high
standards of olive growing and
processing, as well as storing the
final product, which are all prerequisites for top quality extra-virgin
olive oil.

Istrian wine revival
Neuanfang des istrischen Weins
Already in 1884 cooperatives were founded all
over Istria, which among other things engaged in
processing grapes. Modern cellars so-called Cantine sociali greatly contributed to the quality of Istria’s vinification. Such cellars were located in Buje,
Brtonigla, Motovun, Novigrad, Poreč, Rovinj and
Umag and winemakers brought all their grapes to
be processed there. For the first time Istrian wines
were given official recognition at the Great world
wine exhibition in Torino in 1902, where they were
proclaimed among the best in the world, right after
leading wine countries of that time - Spain and
France. This referred to red wines, especially Teran
which was at that time the predominant variety in
Istria. Istrian Malvasia, was publicly presented for
the first time at the Jubilee economic exhibition in
Zagreb in 1891. In Istria wine exhibitions, organized
as events where wine is evaluated and awarded,
have a very long tradition. “Public experiment of
Istrian wines, that would be the first of its kind in
the region” was organized on November 27 and
28, 1901 by the “Gospodarsko družtvo” in Pazin.
Bereits im Jahr 1884 werden in ganz Istrien Genossenschaften gegründet, deren Aufgabe unter anderem die Traubenverarbeitung war. Einen großen
Beitrag, insbesondere bei der qualitativen Weinerzeugung in Istrien, leisteten die modernen Keller, die
sogen. „Cantine sociali“ in Buje, Brtonigla, Motovun,
Novigrad, Poreč, Rovinj und Umag, zu denen die
Weinbauern den gesamten Ertrag zur Weiterverabeitung brachten. Die erste größere Anerkennung erhalten istrische Weine auf der Großen Internationalen Weinausstellung 1902 in Torino, wo sie unter den
besten Weinen der Welt rangierten, unmittelbar nach
den damaligen Weingrößen Spanien und Frankreich.
Es handelte sich dabei um Rotweine, in erster Linie
um den Teran, der damals im Weinbausortiment Istriens überwiegte. In Istrien haben auch die Weinpräsentationen, als Veranstaltungen, auf denen Weine
begutachtet und preisgekrönt werden, eine lange
Tradition. Die „Öffentliche Probe istrischer Weine,
die die erste dieser Art in dieser Gegend wird“, wurde am 27. und 28. November 1901 von der Paziner
„Gesellschaft für Wirtschaft“ organisiert.

St. Georg-Tag
By organizing a wine display and ploughing activity,
the people of Sovinjak celebrate the feast day of
their patron saint - St. George. The whole day programme begins with ploughing, with the intention
of arranging uncultivated areas in the River Mirna
valley. This event is especially interesting because
of the active participation of the younger generation, which definitely helps preserve the tradition
and love towards the fertile Istrian land.
Mit einer Wein-Schau und Pflügeaktion begehen die
Einwohner von Sovinjak den Tag ihres Schutzheiligen St. Georg. Das ganztägige Programm beginnt
mit dem Pflügen, bei dem die noch nicht bearbeiteten Ackerflächen im Flusstal der Mirna umgegraben
werden. Das Schöne dieser Aktion ist auch die aktive Teilnahme der jüngeren Bevölkerungsgruppen,
denn dadurch wird die Tradition und der Liebe zur
fruchtbaren istrischen Erde aufrechterhalten.

The widespread reputation of the leading exhibition
of the wine and other autochthonous agrarian Istrian products such as grappa, olive oil, cheese and
prosciutto, confirms the gastronomic importance of
these products. The exhibition opens on the 29th
of April and lasts for four days fulfilled with various
events because Vinistra is not just the local products exhibition, but an event implying professional
wine tastings, presentations and topic meetings as
well. The main purpose of the exhibition is the wine
quality testing while other different off-programs
make Vinistra even more interesting.
Über die Bedeutung von Wein und anderer autochthoner istrischer landwirtschaftlicher Produkte, wie
Branntwein, Olivenöl, Honig, Käse und Schinken,
gibt die größte Ausstellung dieser Erzeugnisse Auskunft, die - Vinistra. Die Ausstellung wird am 29. April eröffnet, und vier Tage sind voller Trubel, weil die
Vinistra nicht nur eine Ausstellung einheimischer
Erzeugnisse, vor allem von Wein ist, sondern es finden auch Verkostungen, Präsentationen, themenbezogene Treffen statt. Die Ausstellung basiert auf
der Bewertung der Weinqualität, doch zahlreiche
‘Off-Inhalte’ machen die Vinistra so interessant.

keinesfalls versäumen, die bereits seit Jahren zur Weiterentwicklung der Weinwirtschaft und des Weinbaus beiträgt, und eine der ältesten Veranstaltungen dieses Typs

von hoher Güte, was zum größten Teil der Erfahrung der
Weinbauern und der Verknüpfung von traditioneller und
moderner Art der Weinerzeugung und des Rebenanbaus

History of Wine:
Malvasia
It seems that the popularity of this
type of wine began with its arrival
in Venice from the Peloponnese
port of Monemvassia in the middle
of the 13th century. The ancient
Venetian archives show that, at
the assembly of Cardinals held in
the Doge’s palace on the occasion
of the election of the Doge, squires
soaked biscuits in the sweet Malvasia. The wine soon spread widely
over the whole area governed
by the Venetians and later on to
most of Europe. The extent to
which Malvasia was appreciated
is shown by the fact that at many
court-banquets Malvasia was the
most popular wine. It should be
mentioned that at that time Malvasia was a sweet wine and as
the dishes of the day were mostly
also sweet, Malvasia tended to fit
in very well.

Die Popularität dieses Weins begann
eigentlich mit seiner Ankunft aus dem
peloponnesischen Hafen Monemvassia in Venedig, Mitte des 13. Jh. In
alten venezianischen Archiven kann
demnach nachgelesen werden, dass
auf der im Dogenpalast abgehaltenen
Versammlung der Kardinäle, die Patrizier anlässlich der Wahl eines Dogen,
Kekse in süßem Malvasia tauchten. Diese Weinsorte breitete sich schnell auf
das gesamte Gebiet unter venezianischer Verwaltung aus, und später auch
größtenteil auf ganz Europa. Wie sehr
der Wein Malvasia geschätzt wurde,
beweist die Tatsache, dass bei vielen
Festessen im Hof, gerade Malvasia als
beliebtester Wein aufgetischt wurde. Es
muss erwähnt werden, dass Malvasia
damals ein süßer Wein war, doch da bei
den damaligen Speisen der süße „Stich“
vorherrschte, war dieser Wein eine ideale Ergänzung zu vielen Speisen.

Day walking eco-campaign starts
from the plateau of the old resort in Učka and goes across the
Ćićarija slopes, with short breaks

also an overnight stay with dinner

Brgudac. The walking routes are
undemanding and in an easygoing atmosphere surrounded by
relaxing nature, any fatigue will
be quickly forgotten.
Vom Učka aus, dem istrischen Reservat
einer unberührten Natur, bietet sich ein
atemberaubendes Panorama über die gesamte Halbinsel, die Kvarner-Bucht und
die Inseln, und bei klarem Wetter reicht

Der Tag des Planeten Erde ist eine ideale
Motivation zur Entdeckung der Naturschönheiten des nördlichen Teils von Istrien, und dies sollte man selbstverständlich
am besten zu Fuß unternehmen! Die dreitägige Öko-Wanderung beginnt vom Plateau des alten Parkplatzes auf dem Učka
aus, führt über die Hügel von Ćićarija, mit
kurzen Ruhepausen und Geselligkeiten. Es
ist auch eine Übernachtung in Brgudac
mit Abendessen und Unterhaltung für alle
Teilnehmer organisiert. Die Wanderrouten
sind nicht anspruchsvoll, und in einer legeren Atmosphäre und entspannenden

Paintball tournament
The competition format is 3man - each team
consists of three players that have to obey the
rules of the game and restricted grounds. The
tournaments start in the morning hours and last
all day, and while you enjoy the offered food and
drinks, you will hear about the results from the
tournament host. You can celebrate the good
results with the winners and all participants at
the party after the announcement of results. Paintball grounds in Pomer are open all year round
for all those in search of fun and adrenalin.
Football Tournaments
In the opinion of many, football is the most important leisure-time activity in the world. There is
no season during which football players cannot
run out on to the pitch to demonstrate their football skills. So, dear admirers of this sport, prepare yourself for Fan Days, and the teams and
amateur fan clubs for the 11 to 19 age group to
participate in the international football tournaments held during March, May and June in Poreč,
Novigrad and Umag.

Verkündung des Siegers feiern. Der Paintball-Platz
in Pomer ist während des gesamten Jahres für alle
geöffnet, die sowohl Vergnügen als auch Adrenalin
brauchen..
Fussballturniere
Viele halten den Fußball für die wichtigste Nebensache der Welt. Es gibt keine Jahreszeit in der Fußballer
nicht auf dem Feld laufen und ihr Geschick unter Beweis stellen können. Deshalb, liebe Fußballfreunde,
bereitet Euch darauf vor, die Amateurspieler in der
Klasse von 11 bis 19 Jahren aus fast ganz Europa,
bei den im März, Mai und Juni in Poreč, Novigrad und
Umag stattfindenden internationalen Fußballturnieren

As early as the beginning of the 20th century Brijuni had one of the largest golf courses in Europe.
In 1922, the Austrian industrialist Karl Kupelwieser,
owner of Brijuni at that time, had a golf course built,
which at the beginning of the 1930s was additionally reconstructed. It was then an 18 hole golf course,
5,742 meters long. Owing to leading American and
English architects it was continuously improved so
that golf could be played only an hour or two after
heavy rain. This was the site where members of
the European and world aristocracy participated
in numerous tournaments, since at that time the
Brijuni Islands were one of the leading fashionable
resorts in this part of Europe.
The fascinating scenery, as well as the fact that you
can play golf on the very coast under the crowns of
centuries-old Mediterranean trees makes the game
truly exceptional.

Tar golf course is open every day. The course is 200
m long, with 10 driving ranges, putting and chipping
greens, and 6 holes - four PAR 3 and two PAR 4

Bereits zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts befand sich auf
Brioni einer der größten Golfplätze Europas. Den alten
Golfplatz hat im Jahr 1922 der damalige Eigentümer
der Brioni, der österreichische Industrielle Karl Kupelwieser erbauen lassen, und zu Beginn der 30er Jahre,
wurde er zusätzlich verschönert. Damals war es ein
18-Loch-Platz mit einer Länge von 5.742 Metern. Dank
amerikanischer und englischer Spitzen-Architekten
wurde der Platz ständig verbessert, und bereits ein bis
zwei Stunden nach einer Regenschauer konnte schon
wieder Golf gespielt werden. Hier haben bei zahlreichen Turnieren Vertreter der Aristokratie aus Europa
und der ganzen Welt Golf gespielt, weil Brioni zu jener
Zeit einer der bekanntesten mondänen Treffpunkte in
diesem Teil Europas war. Die abwechslungsreiche natürliche Umgebung, sowie die Möglichkeit, direkt am
Meeresstrand, unter den Baumkronen hundertjähriger
mediterraner Bäume zu spielen, macht diesen Sport
besonders interessant.

by the magic fairy wood, which includes an oak-tree hundreds of years
old, known as Nono. Eia is in an area
of untouched nature between Bale
and Krmede, and has numerous ecological projects and unusual buildings
such as a house made of straw, an
earthen kitchen and an Indian sauna,
as well as the very special Butterfly
Garden. The Garden is in the form of
a big flower bed with many different
types of plants and flowers, designed
to attract insects and butterflies with
their appearance and provide them
with nectar. If you want to help this

When travelling through Istria, one
of the most beautiful sights that you
can see are walls overgrown with
plants. Stone village houses, stone
baladuri, stone staircases, cracks
in traditional dry stone walls scattered like pieces of mosaic in the
countryside, churches and ancient
walls - all are covered with strong
plants. Walls of different sizes with
such wild growing plants sometimes
truly resemble hanging gardens.

Blaz cove, situated in Raša Bay
below Rakalj, is a place where
the sound of sea waves passionately mixes with the murmur
of cold and crystal-clear spring
water. Blaz reveals an entire
collection of abandoned water
mills located right by the sea, a
sight rarely seen in these areas.
Passing through lush, jungle-like
vegetation in early spring, you
will surely be impressed by the
sound and force of water coming from different directions.
This very mystical quality crea-
centre of Rovinj’s archipelago,
first as a peninsula, then after an
earthquake, as an island. Tradition has it that the first inhabitants
of Rovinj arrived on the island of
Rubinum from Cissa. Already at
the end of the 19th century detailed research was carried out,
and south of Sv. Ivan na Pučini
island divers discovered remains
of walls and streets. Fishermen
say that even today during bad
weather their fishing nets get
tangled up in these underwater
reefs and rocks.

soll sich die Atlantis im Zentrum
des Rovinjer Archipels befunden

Ivan im offenen Meer auf dem
Meeresgrund Überreste von Mauern und Straßen. Fischer behaupten auch heute noch, dass
ihnen bei Unwetter in diesem
Gebiet die Netze an Felsen und
Riffen hängen bleiben.

are traditional folk festivals that
start in May and last all summer.
Preparations for that one night,
when the waterfront is filled with

night full of songs and sweet
smell of Istrian culinary delicacies - fish and seafood, olives and
olive oil, wine and brandy…
‘Heute Abend, das ist unser Fest,
heute Abend wird Wein getrunken’, das sind die Worte eines
populären kroatischen Liedes,
das sicherlich auch in diesem
Sommer an den Kais der istrischen Städtchen zu hören sein
wird, beim sich im Adriatischen
Meer widerspiegelnden Mondlicht. Fischerfeste sind traditionelle Volksfeste, mit denen
bereits im Monat Mai begonnen
wird, und die den ganzen Som-

is covered in the town vicinity,
some 10 km long for recreationists and 15 km for experienced
trekkers. The trail is not difficult
and the walk lasts 4-5 hours.

birth of Toše Dabac, Novigrad’s Lapidarium presents the works of this
great Croatian photographer, who
during his lifetime often visited Istria,
creating his so-called “Istrian cycle”.
This exhibition gives an artistic view
of the beauty of Istrian towns, landscape, folklore and its people seen
through the camera of Toše Dabac.

possession of of ‘Kvarner’s pearl’ during the international summer carnival.
The very mottled costumes will be
presented in a loud procession and
the masked people will readily pose
in front of the cameras wielded by
the massive audience. And what else
is there to say, it is just another good
reason to visit Rabac where you will
enjoy the carnival madness underneath and together with the masks.
