" Vaccination Dilemma?"
Many long term breeders have long had reservations regarding over vaccination of
their dogs and we personally have never had our dogs boosted annually as we were of
the opinion that it could do more harm than good. Having seen one of our pups go into
anaphylactic shock immediately after having it's second initial vaccination made us
very sceptical. This pup survived but it made us aware of the reaction some dogs have
when their immune system is under attack. As lay people we did not have the expertise
to properly address our concerns but we believe this article below puts a clinicians
perspective on the subject.

Vaccination "NEWSFLASH"
I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of
changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Some of this information will present an ethical
& economic challenge to vets, and there will be sceptics.
Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to
appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects.
Politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic well being should not be a factor in medical decision.
"NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY"
"Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6
months of age, it produces an immunity which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvo,
feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine
neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and
there is little or no effect.
The titer is not “boosted” nor is more memory cells induced." Not only are annual boosters for parvo
and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immunemediated haemolytic anaemia.
"There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV
vaccines." Puppies
receive antibodies through their mother’s milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks.
Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the
vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the
timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than
stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks
apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year
4 mo) will provide lifetime immunity.
CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOGS
Distemper & Parvo
"According to Dr. Schultz, AVMA, 8-15-95, when a vaccinations series given at 2, 3 & 4 months and again
at 1 year with a MLV, puppies and kitten program memory cells that survive for life providing lifelong
immunity."
Dr. Carmichael at Cornell and Dr. Schultz have studies showing immunity against
challenge at 2-10 years for canine distemper & 4 years for parvovirus. Studies for
longer duration are pending. "There are no new strains of parvovirus as one mfg.
would like to suggest. Parvovirus vaccination provides cross immunity for all types."
Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
is one of the agents known to be a cause of kennel cough. Only vaccines withCAV-2
should be used as CAV-1 vaccines carry the risk of "hepatitis blue-eye" reactions &
kidneydamage.
Bordetella Para influenza:
Commonly called "Kennel cough" Recommended only for those dogs boarded,
groomed, taken to dog shows, or for any reason housed where exposed to a lot of
dogs. The intranasal vaccine provides more complete and more rapid onset of
immunity with less chance of reaction.
Immunity requires 72 hours and does not protect from every cause of kennel cough.
Immunity is of short duration (4 to 6 months).
"VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED"
Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune system and result
in lesser immunity for each individual disease as well as increasing the risk of a reaction.
Canine Corona Virus is only a disease of puppies. It is rare, self limiting (dogs get well in 3
days without treatment). Cornell &Texas A&M have only diagnosed one case each in the last 7
years. Corona virus does not cause disease in adult dogs.
Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs . Most of the clinical
cases of lepto reported in dogs in the US are caused by serovaars (or types) grippotyphosa
and bratsilvia. The vaccines contain different serovaars eanicola and ictohemorrhagica. Cross
protection is not provided and protection is short lived. Lepto vaccine is immuno-supressive
to puppies less than 16 weeks.
"NEW DEVELOPMENTS"
Giardia is the most common intestinal parasite of humans in North America, 30% or more of
all dogs & cats are infected with giardia. It has now been demonstrated that humans can
transmit giardia to dogs & cats & vice versa.
Heartworm preventative must be given year round in Houston .
"VACCINES BADLY NEEDED"
New vaccines in development include: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and cat scratch fever
vaccine for cats and Ehrlichia [one of the other tick diseases, much worse than Lymes] for
dogs.
"THE VIEW FROM THE TRENCHES; BUSINESS ASPECTS"
Most vets recommend annual boosters and most kennel operators require them. For
years the pricing structure of vets has misled clients into thinking that the inherent
value of an annual office visit was in the "shots" they failed to emphasize the
importance of a physical exam for early detection of
treatable diseases. It is my hope that you will continue to require rabies & Kennel
cough and emphasize the importance of a recent vet exam. I also hope you will accept
the new protocols and honour these pets as currently vaccinated. Those in the
boarding business who will honour the new vaccine protocols can gain new
customers who were turned away from vet owned boarding facilities reluctant to
change.
"CONCLUSION"
Dogs & cats no longer need to be vaccinated against distemper, parvo, & feline
leukemia every year. Once the initial series of puppy or kitten vaccinations and first
annual vaccinations are completed, immunity from MLV vaccines persists for life. It
has been shown that cats over 1 year of age are immune to Feline Leukemia whether
they have been vaccinated or not. Imagine the money you will save, not to mention
fewer risks from side effects. PCR rabies vaccine, because it is not adjuvanted, will
mean less risk of mediated hemolytic anemia and allergic reactions are reduced by
less frequent use of vaccines as well as by avoiding unnecessary vaccines such as K9 Corona virus and chlamydia for cats, as well as ineffective vaccines such as
Leptospirosis and FIP. Intranasal vaccine for Rhiotracheitis and Calici virus, two upper
respiratory viruses of cats provide more complete protection than injectable vaccines
with less risk of serious reactions.
The AAHA and all 27 veterinary schools of North America are our biggest
endorsement for these new protocols.

Best Tips to Stop Dog Barking !
Remember, barking is natural! It's an important means of communication for dogs. But
sometimes problems can develop. As the pack leader, it's your job to step in and control
excessive barking. Here are my 5 tips to help you stop nuisance barking for good.
1. Correct dog problem behavior and follow through.
Tell your dog to stop barking using a look, a sound, or a physical correction. But don't stop
there. Your dog may pause and then go right back to what he was doing. His body relaxed, but
his brain was still on alert. Be patient. Wait until your dog completely submits before you go
back to what you were doing.
2. Stay calm when trying to stop dog barking.
Constant barking can be irritating, but you won't be able to correct the dog behavior problem if
you are frustrated. Animals don't follow unbalanced leaders. In fact, your dog will mirror your
energy. If you're frustrated, he will be, too! And barking is a great release for that frustrated
energy. Take a moment to curb your own internal barking first.
3. Stake your claim to stop the barking.
Is your dog barking over and over again at the same object, person, situation, or place? Then
you need to step up and claim that stimulus as your own. Use your body, your mind, and your
calm-assertive energy to create an invisible wall that your dog is not allowed to cross. Do it with
100% dedication and focus, and the results may surprise you.
4. Stop the barking by challenging your dog mentally and
physically.
Excessive barking is often the result of pent-up energy. If this is the case, the solution is
simple: release that energy in more productive ways. Does your dog receive a daily walk? Can
you make the walk more challenging with a bicycle, a backpack, or by walking on an incline?
Can you provide more mental challenges, such as herding, agility training, or simple obedience
games? There are many, many ways to increase the challenges in your dog's life. Find one
that you enjoy that your dog can participate in safely.
5. Get professional help to stop dog barking.
When you brought this dog into your life, you made a commitment to provide the care he
needs. Prevent dog barking, and other dog behavior problems by calling in a canine
professional to help him cope with a behavior issue.

Benchmarks
Man's best friend may provide more than just faithful companionship: A new study led
by a Michigan State University researcher shows people who owned and walked
their dogs were 34 percent more likely to meet federal benchmarks on physical
activity.
The results, said epidemiologist Mathew Reeves, show that promoting dog ownership and dog
walking could help many Americans -- of which fewer than half meet recommended levels of
leisure-time physical activity -- become healthier.
"Walking is the most accessible form of physical activity available to people," Reeves said.
"What we wanted to know was if dog owners who walked their dogs were getting more physical
activity or if the dog-walking was simply a substitute for other forms of activity."
The study appears in the current issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health.
Using data from the Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, an annual health survey
conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Michigan Department of
Community Health, Reeves and his team found that not only did owning and walking a dog
impact the amount of walking a person does but also that dog walkers were more active overall.
The study showed people who walked their dogs generally walked about an hour longer per
week than people who owned dogs but did not walk them.
"Obviously you would expect dog walkers to walk more, but we found people who walked their
dog also had higher overall levels of both moderate and vigorous physical activities," he said.
"There appears to be a strong link between owning and walking a dog and achieving higher
levels of physical activity, even after accounting for the actual dog walking."
The study analyzed the amount of leisure-time physical activity a person gets; examples include
sports participation, exercise conditioning and recreational activities such as walking, dancing
and gardening. Public health benchmarks call for at least 150 minutes of such activity a week.
"There is no magic bullet in getting people to reach those benchmarks," Reeves said. "But
owning and walking a dog has a measurable impact."
He also pointed out the social and human/animal bond aspects of owning a dog that has been
shown to have a positive impact on quality of life. And since only about two-thirds of dog owners
reported regularly walking their dogs, Reeves said dog ownership represents a opportunity to
increase participation in walking and overall physical activity.
"The findings suggest public health campaigns that promote the responsible ownership of a dog
along with the promotion of dog walking may represent a logical opportunity to increase physical
activity," he said.
Other findings in the study revealed: Middle-age people have the least amount of time to walk
their dogs; younger and older people get the most physical activity benefit; dogs 1 year old or
younger were more likely to be walked than older dogs; and larger breed dogs (those more than
45 pounds) were walked for a longer duration than smaller dogs.
Contributing authors to the research include Ann Rafferty, Corinne Miller and Sarah Lyon-Callo,
all with the Michigan Department of Community Health.

This is a poem about a young Rottweiler bitch in Scotland who was abused by puppy farmers
just to generate money. In the year 2000 we heard of the plight of a young bitch who had 3
litters in 19 months and was going to be bred from again in her next season. My wife and I
tried to prevent this happening and told people about her plight and asked Rottie owners not
to cover this bitch. We asked a Rottie owner who had 2 sons from our Champion Dog not to
use anything with Jacraila on this bitch but the lure of money was too great and they covered
her. She had 4 litters and 39 pups in 28 Months
The person who covered the bitch has been rewarded by being elected to the committee of our
one and only Breed Club. The promise of success to those pulling the strings was more
important than any code of Ethics and the fate of this bitch was ignored. It has long been my
opinion that some breed clubs exist only for the progress of certain committee members and
the welfare of our breed is secondary to their success.
I regret nothing in trying to help this bitch and I wonder how many breed clubs in the World
would condone such an action (what is your opinion????) By E.Nicol.

A dog named Pui is being credited for
saving the life of a newborn girl, after
the animal carried a plastic bag with
the baby inside from a Dumpster
back to its home in Thailand, the
Bangkok Post reported.
The male dog, a Thai Bangkaew,
carried the white plastic bag by its
mouth from a roadside trash site in
tambon Sala Loi in Tha Rua district to
his owner's house and then barked
loudly to get attention, according to
the newspaper.
The owner's 12-year-old niece
reportedly opened the bag and found
the baby inside.
The newborn, who doctors say was
born prematurely, weighed only 4
pounds. She was transferred to a
nearby hospital, where she is being
cared
for,
according
to
the
newspaper. Authorities are searching
for her mother.
