Germany has hosted three Olympic Games. In 1936, Germany hosted both the Winter Games in GarmischPartenkirchen and the Summer Games in Berlin. In 1972, Germany hosted the Summer Olympics in Munich. Germany was due to host the 1916 Summer Olympics as well as the 1940 Winter Olympics, but both these games had to be cancelled due to World Wars. After these wars, Germans were banned from participating in the 1920, 1924 and 1948 Olympics. Berlin Heidelberg Munich GarmischPartenkirchen Germany was divided into two countries from 1945 to 1990. In 1980 West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany) boycotted the Moscow Olympics in protest at the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In 1984 East Germany (the German Democratic Republic), along with other countries in the Soviet block, boycotted the Summer Games in Los Angeles. Including the Winter Games of 2010, German athletes have won a total of 1618 medals: 528 gold, 542 silver and 548 bronze. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the German team came fifth in the medal league table with 16 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals. Germany at the Paralympics Germany (then the Federal Republic of Germany) participated in the first international Paralympic Games, which were held in 1960 in Rome and in all the Paralympic Games since then. They sent a small delegation of only nine athletes to the 1960 Games. Athletes from the East German Democratic Republic only competed once at the Paralympics in 1984. Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, German athletes have competed together again. Germany hosted the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg. German athletes have been very successful at the Paralympic Games. They have won a total of 1591 medals. This is more than any other country except the United States.
