We must not forget our loved ones in our prayers. Catholic Education Conference Dear Parents and Community Members, Sacramental Celebrations One of the greatest joys of the year is being present at sacramental celebrations as I always feel a great sense of hope and joy when I see young children making a life commitment to follow Jesus. Last Wednesday and Thursday night many students in our parish received the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Archbishop Philip Wilson explained that the children were receiving the same Holy Spirit that St Mary of the Cross MacKillop received at her Confirmation when she was 12 years old and that God loves them. On Sunday, many of the students received their First Communion and they became fully initiated into the Catholic Church. I extend my warmest congratulations to our sacramental students: Angelo Okeny, Juliet Okeny, Hau Ngo, Hieu Ngo, Thuy-Hang Ngo, An Thien Le, Mi Ha, Michael Ta, Moses Karbiah, Quyen Tran & Aileen Bourne. Federal Election - Saturday September 7 The Australian Electoral Commission will be hiring our hall for the upcoming Federal Election. This may be the beginning of more voting days in our hall and we expect around 1300 local community members each time. We are allowed to conduct fundraising on the day and some current ideas are a sausage sizzle, spring rolls & selling drinks. The parish may be having a cake stall to also join in their own fundraising. On the day we are hoping to have as many staff and parents helping on a roster for a while. If you can spare an hour or two on the day helping to cook and serve please speak to staff. We would love your help with cooking & serving food & drinks. Please let one of our staff know if you are available. Advertising Brochure. Over the coming weeks houses in the local area will be receiving a brochure advertising St Patrick’s School. Our aim is to have the opportunity to show our great school to others in the community. The number of classes for 2014 with be finalised in the coming months and we would like to encourage as many families as possible to consider enrolling before the final number of classes is decided. Student Progress Meeting A letter inviting parents/carers to our second ‘Student Progress Meetings’ has been sent out this week and I encourage as many parents as possible to request an opportunity to discuss your child’s learning. Teachers may request a meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress. Mr Minh-Hua Tran CD Did you know that Mr Minh-Hua Tran has just released a CD? He is a talented musician and he has just released a CD of hymns in Vietnamese. Congratulations and well done Mr Tran! UNIFORM STANDARDS I finish by highlighting the importance of all families to support the uniform requirement set by the School Board. We thank all the families who ensure that their children are wearing their uniform. I am particularly highlighting that students should not be wearing sandshoes with their school uniform. I have included a photo to support families in regards to wearing the correct uniform. May God Bless You All Frank Congedi Catholic Schools Cross Country Carnival - Thursday 8th August 2013 Last Thursday our school took 23 excited students to participate in the Catholic Schools Cross Country Carnival held in the city. Each student had to run a 2.2km track that was very physically challenging. Students attended 3 training sessions per week for 4 weeks leading up to the carnival to improve their fitness. Not one student missed a training and all took being a part of the team very seriously. We are very proud to say that all students finished the race with success and they were all very happy with the position they finished in. They represented our school with pride and their behaviour on the day was exceptional. Each race had at least 200 participants. We had 3 students finish in the top 20 of their age group, 5 students finish in the top 50 of their age group and all other students finishing inside the top 100. That is truly an amazing effort. Mrs Will Mr Congedi and I recently attended the Catholic Education Conference. Fr Denis Edwards, a leading theologian, and Dr Paul Clarke, captivated us with their deep knowledge of the needs of the environment. They explained the devastating effects that increased industrial waste, genetic food production, growing populations; increased consumption etc. have had on the planet. All people are called to learn ways of sustainable living so that we can begin to mend the damage that has been done. Catholic Education SA is committed to developing the students’ skills, knowledge and understanding of the power they have to make a difference. Living sustainably is a focus of the Australian Curriculum and caring for the world God has given us is a priority at St Patrick’s School. Ms Savy and the SRC have been working hard to spread the message of sustainability, particularly with a focus on waste management. Mr Bucco and the year 7s have been building a frog pond and in the near future we will have vegetable and herb gardens in our school. We welcome any suggestions and support our parent/carer community can give us on sustainable actions so that we can work together to educate our children of the importance of living sustainably and protecting God’s gift of creation. I encourage you to take the opportunity to explore different things you can all do to help the environment. Anne-Marie Platten Religious Education Coordinator Maths Puzzle Years R- 3 Solution SCHOOL PHOTO DAY Monday 22nd September In the next few weeks we will be sending home envelopes for school photos. Please return these envelopes to the front office regardless of if you wish to purchase photos or not. Please remember that it is important that you enclose the correct money as no change can be given. Ever thought about becoming Catholic? Are your children asking you questions about God, Jesus, and the Church which is making you ask questions about your own faith, the meaning of life and the purpose of religion? Want to learn more about the Catholic faith? Do you wish to prepare to be baptised as a member of the Catholic Church or be received into the Catholic Church if you are already baptised in another Christian community? Have you been baptised as a Catholic but never been confirmed? The parish will begin a programme of enquiry with an information meeting on Thursday 17th October 2013 which will assist people interested in the Catholic Church. Venue of the meeting to be advised. What shape is the top of a loaf of bread? The answer is a RECTANGLE. Please contact Fr Maurice, Deacon Long Hai, Sister Thu or the Parish Office if you are interested. 8346 0944 or email [email protected]
